Since early-2001, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has successfully operated an ultra fine grinding (UFG) circuit to supplement its roaster capacity for the treatment of the refractory gold flotation concentrate. A second UFG mill was installed in 2002 taking the total UFG capacity to over 20 tph while grinding to 11 to 12 microns and achieving over 90 per cent gold recovery. A development program in 2002/3 involving plant trials, pilot plants and laboratory testwork resulted in process improvements and a better understanding of the milling and gold leach processes that assisted in narrowing the gap between UFG and roasting. This paper details the operation of the ultra fine grinding process at KCGM as a non oxidative treatment for the extraction of gold from a refractory ores.

Electrowinning of lead from aqueous solution of PbCl2 and electrowinning of manganese dioxide from aqueous solution of MnCl2 are two research focuses in hydrometallurgy. This paper investigated a new process of simultaneous electrowinning of lead and manganese dioxide in chloride medium. The simultaneous electrowinning process in chloride solution not only can prevent chloride from liberating at anodes but also obtain two electrolysis products and decrease electric energy consumption. Diaphragm cell is used in the simultaneous electrowinning process to form separate anode and cathode compartment. The effects of temperature, HCl concentration in anolyte, NaCl concentration in catholyte and electrolysis time on current efficiency and cell voltage are studied. The results indicate that current efficiency of anode and cathode for 5 hours is 99% and 96% respectively, average cell voltage is 1. 701V, the weight ratio of lead and manganese dioxide produced at electrodes is 2. 39:1 under the optimum conditions. As anode products, manganese dioxide is ??MnO2, content of which in the products is more than 92%.

The Quioma Mine is located along the axis of the Cordillera Oriental, 130 km southeast of Cochabamba, South Central Bolivia. Silver, lead, zinc, antimony, and gold have been intermittently produced from veins in the Quioma area since Colonial times. Mineralization occurs within steeply dipping fissure veins transecting moderately folded Lower Ordovician sediments. Tectonic activity is early to mid-Tertiary and the vein system parallels the fold axis of a major northwest-southeast striking, doubly plunging anticline. Vein sets occur within a 2 km wide band over a strike distance of 13 km along the northeast limb of the anticline. Economic mineralization occupies syntectonic pre-mineral fault zones developed in more competent stratigraphis units of Lower Ordovician clastic sediments. Veins average 55 cm in width, although mineralized structures up to 3 m wide with a known strike length of several hundred meters have been mined. Mineralization consists of siderite, argentifferous galena, sphalerite, and quartz, with minor amounts of chalcopyrite, barite, and bournonite. Pyrite is rare except at the Boston vein where it occurs with stibnite that contains trace amounts of gold. A marked characteristic of veins in the district is evidence of repeated stages of movement during mineralization. Intrusive rocks are rare in the Quioma area. Narrow porphyritic dikes of Andesitic composition averaging 1 m in thickness have been observed. These dikes occasionally show a close spatial relationship to the veins and are often kaolinized and carbonitized. Vein and dike contacts are sharp and alteration does not appear to extend into the wall rock. Mineral zoning is suggested by antimony mineralization observed in peripheral areas of the anticline.

The historical background of on-strand cooling is given, together with a resume of recent practical developments. Laboratory test procedures are then considered in detail, for both productivity and quality parameters, with particular reference to the design of the Ravenscraig No 3 machine (Scotland). A heat transfer model is presented for a porous sinter with propagating cracks. The influence of cooling/sintering area ratio, sinter strength, granulometry, return fines, coke consumption and FeO levels are examined in relation to economics. A detailed comparison of capital and running costs for two different strands, designed for identical duties, but with off or on-strand cooling, is then given.

"The IREDES1 Special Interest Group (SIG) for drill rigs has been active since its launch during MineExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. SIG for drill rigs is responsible for the development of an IREDES drill rig profile, including the exchange of production planning, performance, and quality reporting data between various kinds of drill rigs and the databases used by the operating mine. During 2001, a first draft of the drill rigs profile was jointly prepared by drill rig suppliers, mining companies, and third-party suppliers and reviewed during several SIG meetings. The profile for prototyping projects was released in mid-2002; the first official IREDES release was based on feedback received from these projects.In 2002, LKAB and Atlas Copco decided to carry out an IREDES prototyping project using the Simba L6C production drill rig. The goal was to verify the drill rig profile and identify potential problems prior to the official release. This was done by implementing the IREDES prototype version into LKAB’s production planning and Simba rig control systems. The Simba rig control system was designed to handle drill plan and logging information coming from the mine planning system. In parallel to this, the mine production system was adapted for drill plan export and logging data import in IREDES format.This paper presents the most recent results of the IREDES prototyping project. Results from late 2002 show that the basic architecture of the drill rig profile works and that a common language for data exchange, IREDES, will be a central requirement for future mine automation.As a result of the IREDES prototyping project, the IREDES standard was approved at the IREDES board meeting held at the 2003 CIM Annual Conference and Exhibition. Soon thereafter, IREDES compliant products, including drill rigs and mine production planning systems, were put on the market."

During 1986, the Government continued with efforts to ease the country's almost total reliance on coffee exports for trade revenues by allocating 45% of the Government's budget to commerce and industrial projects. The collapse in coffee prices in 1985 continued to exacerbate the country's growing trade deficit, weakened currency, and dwindling reserves of foreign exchange in 1986. Amoco Burundi Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Amoco International Oil Co., continued with plans to drill at least two exploration wells in Lake Tanganyika in 1987. Both offshore and onshore drilling exploration was planned by Amoco Burundi. Any oil or gas finds were expected to have substantial impact on the Burundian economy, as a major portion of the country's trade deficit was directly attributable to petroleum and gas imports.

The cost of keeping platinum ware in repair becomes such an important item in laboratories where much fusion-work is done, that a method of saving in this direction may not prove unacceptable to at least some of the members of the Institute. Some two years since I had the misfortune to puncture an almost new Bishop crucible. As an experiment I endeavored to patch it, and with such success that it is still in constant use. This may be accomplished in the following manner : The crucible and patch, which should be of stout foil, are rubbed bright with silica, or rotten-stone; a light platinum wire, welded to a corner of the patch, and the whole treated for several hours with hot concentrated hydrochloric acid; after which they are thoroughly washed with distilled water and dried. The head of an ordinary iron rivet, 4 inches by $ inches, is rounded off by hammering to somewhat the shape of the crucible. This is sunk 2 inches in a block of hard wood, and firmly wedged in place. This serves for an anvil. The hammer is an ordinary cast-iron toy, 11/2 inches long, and # inches in face, mounted on a 4 inch iron rod, 10 inches long. In mining, the process of comminution starts at the pit and ends at the classifiers. The first machine that breaks or comminutes ore is the primary crusher. There are many types of crushers, but the one most commonly used in large tonnage plants is the gyratory so discussion is restricted to this type of machine. See Figure 1. The primary crusher is the most important piece of comminution machinery in the plant because every ton of ore processed by the concentrator must pass through it, as shown in Figure 2. Most plants can operate if a secondary crusher or a mill is shut down, but if the primary crusher stops, the whole concentrator goes down. It is, therefore, important that the machine be able to produce sufficient ore to keep the concentrator running without hesitation. The plant designer first considers the required daily capacity and an estimate of the size of the ore from the pit. To this he adds an availability factor to compensate for delays due to shovels, trucks and rou- [ ] tine maintenance at the crushing station. This factor is based on experience and can be on the order of 75% (1). With these figures, he determines the hourly capacity required of the primary crushing station to keep the concentrator supplied. See Table I.

Motion capture involves recording the position and global orientation of joint sensors of a real object, in most cases a real person performing some human activities. This information is usually recorded at uniformly spaced instances of time, or as it is often called frame-by-frame. Then the recorded motion data sets are processed and mapped into a skeleton hierarchy of a virtual, computer simulated human figure to control the motion of the virtual human in the computer simulation. In the first part of the paper we review several new techniques developed to facilitate the manipulation, noise reduction, storage and reuse of captured data, which have a potential to reduce the overall cost of motion simulation and improve its realism. In the second part of the paper we consider the real life problem of reducing a worker?s risk from being hit by underground mining machinery in a confined space. We formulate a set of requirements to motion editing for this particular task and analyze the limitation of existing techniques

In primary copper smelters, the received copper concentrate and other materials contain a certain amount of moisture, ranging from six to 14 per cent. Moisture in wet concentrate has a negative effect on the performance of the smelting furnaces when it is fed directly to the furnaces, namely increasing the energy consumption and the off-gas flow. There are several drying technologies available for drying copper concentrate, varying from direct heated rotary dryers and flash dryers to indirect heated steam dryers. Application of steam dryers has changed the drying process for copper smelters. Produced from a waste heat boiler, steam as heating medium enables plant-wide heat utilisation. Fossil fuel used from outside sources to remove water is no longer required and the combustion chamber is not required. In addition special attention has been paid to overcome the known problems of pollution emissions, excessive wear, clogging and frequent maintenance. The Kumera steam dryer is featured with many advantages based on principal improvements in reducing tube element wear and increasing drying efficiency. Thus, it has been considered as the first choice for those smelters where steam is available.

The possibility of oil and gas production in Alabama his been little considered as yet. Gas and some oil have been found in northwestern Alabama, near Birmingham, in the Pennsylvanian beds, but the oil and gas possibilities in the Cretaceous beds are not generally appreciated. The recent activity of oil companies in that State has attracted much attention, and in this paper the main structural and the general strati-graphic features are described. Four favorable areas are outlined. These contain folds of major interest. There are other favorable areas which have not been mapped-l Commercial pools discovered in this area would have the advantage of being near tidewater. Mobile, Ala., on the Gulf of Mexico, would be the logical site for refineries and shipping facilities. A pipe line could readily be laid to that city from the Hatchitigbee and the Jackson areas. The logical outlet for the Geneva and the Gordon areas would be Panama City, Ha., on the Gulf of Mexico. Topography The whole of the area under consideration lies in the Gulf coastal plain and slopes gently to the southwest and west. The elevations vary from 200 to 400 ft. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

THE possibility of separating the various constituents of mixed ores or metalliferous products by differentially producing their soluble sulfates has not received the consideration that it deserves. The production of the soluble sulfate may be accomplished by baking the ore with sulfuric acid or by treating it with gases containing oxides of sulfur. This paper is primarily concerned with the first method. The procedure used was to mix the material with a solution containing a definite weight of sulfuric acid, baking the mixture at various tempera-tures and then leaching out the soluble sulfate with water. The amount of acid used was calculated to produce certain desired soluble sulfates. The temperature of baking depended on the decomposition points of the sulfates involved. The object was to prevent the formation of or to decompose certain sulfates while leaving a maximum quantity of another sulfate in a water-soluble form. This procedure has two possible advantages over the ordinary method of leaching with an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. First, a more selective leach may be obtained, and second, the higher temperatures and stronger acid concentrations involved will permit a better recovery of materials that are difficultly soluble in relatively dilute aqueous sulfuric acid solutions. The method of sulfuric acid baking followed by water leaching is not new, as it has been applied in the treatment of various metalliferous materials such as the recovery of cadmium from flue dust1, the re-treat-ment of zinc leach residues2 and the working up of electrolytic slimes3.

In a longwall section that consisted of 7 longwall panels, there were two high pressure gas transmission pipelines across the panels burying from 3 to 10 ft. below the surface. One pipeline was 20 in. in diameter while the other was 24 in. in diameter. In order to investigate the stress conditions sustained by the pipelines during underground longwall mining, strain gages were mounted on the pipelines above panel #3, #4, and #5. Survey monuments were also installed along but near the pipelines. This paper presents a subsidence prediction method and the preliminary results of the pipelines' stress conditions as affected by underground longwall mining.

Blasting at a granite quarry in eastern Maryland produces elevated air blast readings that can fall into the cautionary zone for the state of Maryland environmental regulations on a semi-regular basis. When designing blast patterns in this quarry, challenging geology creates rough and uneven blast faces that can be difficult to capture with 2D laser profiling fully. Utilizing several methods known to manage high air blast results like pattern adjustments, decking, and timing changes have not achieved consistent outcomes. Accurately capturing and modeling this geology is the key to controlling high air blast. 3D modeling and profiling by drone is the solution to understanding accurate face profiles and real minimum burdens. Using 18 months of blasting data and air blast results to establish a baseline, the comparisons between blasts designed with 2D profiling and blasts designed with drone 3D profiling show improvement in air blast levels. Additionally, shots with completed drilling were drone profiled to understand precise amounts of burden for each borehole. This 'audit' of a blast allows for custom loading of explosives, accommodating the amount of burden present on the blast face. 3Dprofiling is not a new tool in the blasting industry, but a drone alleviates some of the restrictions ground systems face. Controlling and managing air blast, as it pertains to face burdens, requires an understanding of those burdens from all angles. A drone provides that distinct level of insight. The results of this study indicate that drone profiling is managing the customer's air blast readings, allowing the customer to maintain their license to operate within the community.

A SURVEY of the technical literature concerned with oil well drilling methods and particularly with rate of penetration by various cutting media on different types of rock provides a mass of conflicting data. This is especially true with respect to, (1) the relative efficiency of diamond, rotary and percussion drilling operations; (2) the costs of the various types of drilling; and (3) the hardness factor of various types of rock and cutting media. The latter is the particular phase of the subject discussed here. The cause of the confusion may be attributed partially to a lack of 'basic knowledge concerning the physical properties of the cutting media and of individual types of rock. It is also due in part to a general lack of uniform standards in the industry for evaluating the hardness versus drillability of rocks while possible errors in interpretation by the authors of the various papers pertaining to the subject may be an additional cause of misunderstanding. The hardness of a mineral is defined by Dana' as "the resistance which a smooth surface offers to abrasion." Webster' states that hardness is "the cohesion of the particles on the surface of a body (as a mineral) as determined by its capacity to scratch another or be itself scratched." Rock hardness, although not usually defined in publications describing rocks, is assumed to be the same as the minerals which compose the rock or the resistance of the rock to abrasion. Drillability of a rock may be defined arbitrarily as the rate at which rock is penetrated by a definite type of drilling tool with the assistance of a specific type of cutting surface or medium and under speci- fied conditions as to speed of rotation and applications of pressure. Eventually the term penetrability may have to be employed to include any method of making boreholes in rocks, since methods other than those using conventional cutting surfaces are already in operation. A case in point is the jet piercing methoda which employs an oxy-acetylene flame as a means of penetration. The word hardness as used by the drilling fraternity has a variety of meanings which depend upon the type of drilling method employed. For example, in diamond drilling, hardness is interpretated as resistance to abrasion. In percussion drilling the term implies resistance to impact or indentation, while in rotary drilling, hardness is considered anal-agous to compressive strength. The three types of hardness—abrasion, impact and compression—are conflicting variables for different types of rock. Nevertheless, the term hardness is applied indiscriminately by the industry for the resistance of rock to penetration by any type of drilling technique. PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic loca- tion or seam characteristics, modern raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality, and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Under- ground preparation involves choosing those portions of the seam which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving ( 1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios, and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1 ) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available, and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another, the (1) petrography of the coal in the seam does not remain uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change, and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution, and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content, and petrography are of considerable interest, and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking, and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal.

The utilisation of fossil fuels, including coal (of which Australia is a large producer and exporter) is a significant contributor to the emission of greenhouse gases. Methane gas, formed during the coalification process, is present in coal seams to varying levels depending on the rank and depth of the deposit. This gas usually escapes to the atmosphere during mining operations without prior conversion to C02 or utilisation as fuel. The quantity of methane released can represent from less than one percent to more than five percent of the carbon content of the coal mined. Per unit of carbon, methane has a greenhouse impact many times that of C02. The emission of uncombusted methane to the atmosphere can therefore represent a greenhouse impact of similar porportions to that of the CO2 formed by combusting the mined coal. However, greenhouse emissions from coal can be minimised by collecting the coal seam methane and converting it to water vapour and the less damaging form, CO2. If such conversion is carried out while performing useful work, the methane can further reduce greenhouse emissions by displacing other fossil fuels. Technology has been developed to allow coal seam methane gas to be economically collected in a pure form, uncontaminated with air. This pure methane can be used to supplement natural gas supplies, to generate power or for the production of chemicals or substitute transport fuels. By collecting and utilising coal seam methane, the greenhouse impact from the mining and use of coal can be minimised, with significant reductions possible in the case of gassy deposits.

The purpose of this paper is to describe two systems designed to provide estimations in stratigraphic orebodies for the purposes of detailed mine planning. The first is a completely geostatistical approach and the second is a combined geostatistical/deterministic approach. The essential features of both systems are the estimation of stratigraphic ore boundaries and the subsequent use of those boundaries to provide stratigraphic (or zonal) control for block and point grade estimation (kriging). Both systems are illustrated by application to a section of, the Hilton orebodies, Queensland, Australia.

This paper presents data and theorem to calculate the risk of experiencing undesirable lightning related events while blasting or while engaged in other lightning sensitive activities. The paper provides an overview of lightning hazards in blasting operations and a brief history of lightning related blasting accidents. Lightning continues to be the primary cause of premature initiations of explosives in mining; on average, over two such incidents are reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) each year. The energy contained in lightning discharges and how this energy sets off explosives in mining is presented. Three categories of lightning warning methods: public media, lightning detectors, and atmospheric electrostatic field measurement are discussed. The remainder of the paper presents recently acquired data on the spatial characteristics of lightning development. This data is used to estimate the risk assumed by blasters under certain conditions. Risk estimations are made for electric and nonelectric blasting if persons are evacuated when cloud-to-ground (c-g) lightning approaches within a certain distance. For example, about 0.6% of all c-g lightning strikes have no other c-g lightning strikes within 25 miles in the previous 30 minutes. The paper shows that a typical blaster using nonelectric initiation in a high lightning density area with a 100% accurate lightning detector set to alarm at 25 miles would have a lightning caused unplanned detonation every 14,000 years.
