Since its beginning, the occupation of coal mining has been considered hazardous. It is true that there are hazards inherent in mining, but it is believed that most of them, at least, can be guarded against. Moreover, many man-made hazards can be eliminated by officials and workers adopting safer practices. Notwithstanding the hazards in coal mining, the fatal accident rate in the United States has improved. During the, period from 1911, to 1941, inclusive, the fatal accident rate varied from 5.35 to 2.22 per million tons of coal. With many handicaps during the war period, 1942-45, such as the lack of experienced manpower. and the, employment of untrained men, the increased average age of workers, and the shortage of equipment and supplies, the industry s ill further reduced its accident rate, so that it ranged from 2.30 to 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. During 1944, 684,000,000 tons of coal was produced with a rate of 1.91, and during 1945, 631,000,000 tons was produced with a rate of 1.724/ deaths per millon tons of coal. The accident rate for 1945 was the lowest for the industry since records have been compiled.

THE wire saw is a tool not less than 60 years old, probably nearer 100 years old. It was developed in Europe and is reputed to have originated in Belgium. Frombold is said to be the original patentee. [ ] Wire sawing equipment, as indicated in Fig. I, is very simple. It consists of a three-strand wire cable, usually 3/16 or 1/4 in. in diameter, or a single flat ribbon of medium hard, tough, alloy steel twisted into a helix of those diameters, made to form an endless belt of any length up to several thousand feet. The wire is guided into the cut by sheaves mounted in slides on steel columns situated close to either end of the cut. The feed motion usually is controlled either by gravity or by hand-operated feed screws. The steel columns or "standards" range from 15 to 30 ft. in length. At the top is a swiveled arm supporting a sheave similar to the traveling sheave below. Immediately under the swivel-mounted sheave is a guy plate or collar with shackles attaching four chain or wire-rope guys with suitable tightening devices, or with two guys and two jack legs for supporting the standard vertically or at any desired angle. The usual drive is by a 10-hp. motor through a gear reducer, on which are mounted two grooved sheaves, one of which is keyed and the other free running on the shaft. Principles of ecologically friendly geo-technologies construction are formulated on the basis of the works of the leading scientists in the field of rational processing of mineral resources of the Russian Academy of Sciences. One of these concepts is a new direction in rotational disintegration of mineral and technogenic raw material with the purpose of effective subsequent enrichment. A large amount of practical experience has been accumulated in the industry on selective destruction by application of vibrational method on initial material with consideration of its physical-mechanical properties and mineral structure. This method is successfully realised in a conic inertial pulverisation devices constructed by Mekhanobr Institute (St.-Petersburg). A new construction of conical-inertial pulverisation with a modification of disintegration force has been developed recently at Mekhanobr Institute. It allows, in some cases, to increase selectivity of subdivision and to avoid over-disintegration. Advantages of “wet” subdivision methods in conic inertial disintegration devices are proved. The efficiency of such subdivision can be increased due to rational use of the phenomenon of a dislocation-dynamic diffusion. Its advantage is proved by the effect on disintegrated material by frequency-modulated variable electrical fields of low power. It was shown in industrial conditions, that the productivity of the spherical mill can be increased by 10 %, and that it also prevents ecologically harmful surface active substances (SAS) in milling zone and it reduces the dust content in the air. The techniques of tentative estimation of efficiency of various proceedings technogenic materials and their classification are created. The scientific fundaments of rational, ecologically friendly technology of processing and regeneration of various kinds of technogenic raw material are developed. A number of effective technologies on processing of wastes is developed and inculcated in concentration factories and metallurgical factories.

INTRODUCTION The Newtown Creek Pollution Control Project (P.W. 53) is a major system of facilities designed to collect wastewater from large areas of the Boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, then channel it to a treatment plant where the wastewater is processed and discharged. The North Branch interceptor collects wastewater along the east side of Manhattan and transports it downstream to a Junction Chamber at Avenue "D" near East 13th Street. The South Branch interceptor similarly collects wastewater from the southern part of Manhattan Island on both east and west sides of Manhattan and transports it to the same Junction Chamber from where both flows are delivered to the adjacent Manhattan Pumping Station which pumps the wastewater under the East River to a treatment plant in Brooklyn. This system is shown in Figure 1. Construction of the Manhattan Pumping Station began in the Summer of 1966 and was delayed by a number of mishaps. In the vicinity of the North and South Interceptors, approximately 3,060 cubic meters (4,000 cubic yards) of soil flowed into the excavation: 765 cubic meters (1,000 cubic yards) at the North Branch Interceptor, and approximately 2,300 cubic meters (3,000 cubic yards) at the South Interceptor. These movements were accompanied by surface subsidence, collapse, or both. On June 4, 1973, while pumping station construction was underway, approximately five to seven cubic yards of sand entered the junction chamber through a temporary bulkhead valve in the North Branch Interceptor.

Blasting in Norwegian mines is often carried out by contractors who tend to look for the cheapest solution, without concern about fragment quality. The requirementsfor a contractor are usually only related to the maximum size of boulders and the quantity per month. Even when the owners of the mine are responsible for blasting, very little effort is made to optimise the blasting process. This paper presents test methods which were used and results from small-scale and full-scale blasting tests. In the small-scale tests, cubes 500 x 500 x 500 mm of four different rock types were blasted in a chamber, using two types of dynamite explosive. The velocity of detonation (VOD) for the dynamite explosives was 3000 m/s and 6000 m/s respectively. Three cubes of each rock type were blasted with each type of explosive, and a total of six cubes of each rock type was used. The entire muckpile (approximately 350 kg) was- sieved and weighed after each blast and fragments between 8-16 mm were tested for impact values and flakiness. The results of these tests clearly showed improvement in fragmentation the closer the acoustic impedance ratio of the explosive (VOD x density) over the rock (Cp density) was equal to one. The results also showed that the quality of the fragments (in terms of impact values) tends to be better when the cubes are blasted with the high velocity dynamite.

"Heat transfer and friction in hot flat rolling have traditionally been characterised by an average heat transfer coefficient (h) and an average friction coefficient (p.). However, the presence of oxide scales and asperities at the interface question the use of such averages. The apparent irregularity and lack of pattern of interactions at the interface has prompted this present investigation to move away from averaged h and 11 values, and to study their local evolution based on probabilistic rules. The approach is based on the probability of finding the workpiece surface in a specific configuration at a particular instance of time in the roll gap. These rules are based on observations of surface phenomena such as scale behaviour during hot rolling. The model is implemented using user-subroutines integrated with the commercially available finite element program ABAQUS™. The results show the strong dependence of h and u on the local scale interactions. In particular, the effect of scale thickness, material behaviour and processing conditions on the evolution of hand 11 are discussed. Finally, the development of a Cellular Automata based Finite Element (CAFE) model is proposed to model the combined interfacial phenomenon of friction and heat transfer at the tool-work piece interface.IntroductionIntricate interactions between process variables in hot rolling of steels make it a challenge to the modelling community. For a given material and geometry combination, reducing interfacial power losses can increase the efficiency of the rolling process. The roll-strip interface, therefore, forms the critical zone and is currently the domain of intense investigation, especially to characterize interfacial frictionl • 2 and heat transfer3 • 4 . These interfacial phenomena are inter-related and cannot be studied in isolation. However, very few mathematical models4 • 5 combine an analysis of friction and heat transfer and deformation of the strip-roll interface taking into account the role of asperities and oxide scales."

"The purpose of this project was to design the Electrical Service Platform (ESP) for the Cape Wind Offshore Wind Farm. The ESP structure comprises two primary parts: the topside platform housing the electrical equipment and the two jacket substructures providing foundation support to the platform. The topside is supported only by the two inner legs of each jacket. The site water depth is relatively shallow and the seabed comprised of loose sediment subject to severe local scour up to 18 feet. The piles are designed for local scour, storm conditions, vessel impact, ice loads and pile installation fatigue. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspect of this project.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONBackgroundThe Cape Wind project will be located in Nantucket Sound between Cape Cod on the Massachusetts mainland (northeastern coast of the USA) and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket (Fig. 1). The project is to be sited on Horseshoe Shoal, about equal distances from the mainland and the two islands. The project will produce 75% of the electricity used on Cape Cod and the Islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket with zero pollution emissions and resulting in the reduced operations, fuel consumption and pollution emissions from the fossil fuel power plants in the region. The wind farm, if constructed per plan, is expected to be America’s first offshore wind farm.The wind farm will consist of an array of 130 Siemens 3.6-megawatt offshore wind turbines with a combined production capacity of 468-megawatts. The offshore wind turbine towers will be bolted onto the transition pieces supported by monopile foundations driven into seabed. The power from the 130 wind turbine generators will be delivered to the Electrical Service Platform (ESP) by an array of up to 14 seabed conductors."

A consumable-electrode arc-melting furnace was constructed at the Bureau of Mines Physical Metallurgy Laboratory, College Park, Md., for the production of uncontaminated titanium and titanium-alloy ingots. The furnace was designed to allow for evacuating to very low pressures and back filling with helium and argon mixtures for melting at or near atmospheric pressure. Vacuum melting at a few millimeters pressure was also used with a mixture of helium and argon gas sweeping the crucible. For research purposes a 25- to 30-pound ingot, 4 inches in diameter by 15 inches in length, was selected to provide, enough 1/2-inch plate for extensive tensile and impact testing of standard size specimens. Enough plate was also provided for testing by other Government laboratories. The homogeneity of several alloy ingots was determined, and excellent results were obtained. By using a large electrode-to-ingot-area ratio and high currents or power inputs to the arc furnace rather uniform ingots were routinely prepared.

An in-seam seismic (ISS) - based void detection technique was developed and tested for three general mine conditions: anthracite, bituminous and trona. The detection range tested varied from 80 to 100 m for trona mines and from 33 to 66 m for bituminous mines. High quality and broad band signals were obtained from these tests and were used to delineate the voids. The paper provides a brief discussion on the technical features of this void detection technique, the testing conditions and results, and a general assessment of the technique.

"One of the most important phases in Canada's relatively rapid development of its metal mining and refining industries was launched in 1928 when the directors of Noranda Mines Limited decided to establish an electrolytic copper refinery ""somewhere in Eastern Canada”. Noranda's president, J.Y. Murdoch, had already evolved the company's ""mine to market"" policy and was determined to prove the economic feasibility of refining Noranda copper in Canada. The time appeared to be ripe as buoyant business conditions continued into 1929. In addition, proven ore reserves at the Horne Mine in northwest Quebec had virtually tripled and the price of copper had reached a healthy 15 cents per pound. Letters Patent incorporating the company bearing the date February 6, 1929 had been granted by the Secretary of State in accordance with an application that specified a capital structure of $2 million divided into 20 000 shares with a value of $100 each. Noranda assumed 70% of the original investment in the proposed refinery, while the Nicholas Copper Company of New York (which later became Phelps Dodge Corporation) and British Metal Corporation Ltd. of London, England, each were responsible for 15%. Nicholas Copper Company agreed to supply the design and to supervise the construction of the refinery and British Metal Corporation would act as sales agent and market the refinery's products."

Cardox, which consists essentially of a steel tube containing carbon dioxide compressed to the liquid state, is a trade name designating a device used principally in coal mines to break down coal. The use of Cardox to break down coal was developed in the Middle Western coal fields around 1927 or 1928. At first, a large, heavy tube was used, requiring many parts. Through experimentation and technologic improvement, the weight of the tube has been brought down from 88 lb. to 20 lb. and the new, light tube makes use of larger volumes of CO2 at lower pressures than formerly was thought possible. This blasting method is extensively used today in coal mines and probably one tenth of the bituminous coal produced in the United States is prepared with Cardox. Construction and Application As used in the coal mine, Cardox looks like a piece of steel pipe 2 to 3 in. in diameter and 3 to 5 ft. long. When it is necessary to fire a shot, the tube is wired with two leg wires that are long enough so that when the tube is pushed the desired distance into the hole the wires will protrude 5 to 6 in. It has been found that No. 18 insulated copper annunciator wire is the best material for leg wires. A two-conductor rubber-covered shot-firing cable of sufficient length is then attached to the leg wires. A 2 to 6-volt current is applied, either by means of shot-firing batteries or the standard type of shot-firing generator. Upon the application of the current, the charge in the cartridge is set off. Because the breaking action upon the coal is supplied by the relatively slow physical expansion of the carbon dioxide gas rather than by the rapid chemical formation of gases as in more familiar explosives, the result is a slow heaving action, somewhat similar to that produced by black powder, rather than a shap detonating effect. Permissible powder does its work at roughly ten times the pressures in use with Cardox. The escaped gas from a Cardox shot apparently works along the planes of weakness in the coal face, such as the coal cleats, the edges of the cut, and along the top of the seam, breaking off the coal toward the free faces and heaving the mass of coal outward. Cardox tubes are manufactured in various sizes to take care of variable conditions of seam size, undercut depth, cleatage, coal hardness, and so forth. The tubes range in diameter from 2 to 3 in. (Table I) and the normal CO2 charge is from 24 to 96 oz. For any one tube size, several sizes of shear disks are available, thus excellent control of the type of shooting desired is possible. In general, local experience and experimentation dictate the size of tube chosen for any particular job. For high coal, and deeper or wider cuts, a larger size is chosen to start with, and the opposite is true for low coal, softer coal, or small cuts. The Miami orebody occurs in an altered Pinal schist. It is popularly known as one of the '(porphyry " deposits but, as at Inspiration and Ray, the ore is an altered mincralized Pinal schist. The orebody mined is the zone of secondary enrichment. Speaking in general terms, the area of the orebody at Miami may be considered as 1000 ft. long and 800 ft. wide. The vertical thickness varies from 200 to 400 ft., so that it is an extremely irregular mass. The study of the ground movement and resulting subsidence at Miami is complicated by the fact that the formation is not homogeneous throughout the mining area, the orebody terminating on its eastern extremity at a fault plane adjoining the Gila conglomerate. This conglomerate is a recent sedimentary deposit somewhat analogous to glacial drift and consists of boulders of granite, schist, and other material cemented with clay, and at times is quite hard. The fault dips eastward at an angle of 45". The original method of mining was top slicing, the slices being 10 ft. thick. At first, there was a good deal of experimenting with mining methods. Some undercut rooms were tried, and the stopes were filled with broken ore with the idea of removing intervening pillars by top slicing. The adoption of the top-slicing method in itself involved considerable experimenting, including some experiments with a long-wall system. The method finally adopted involved the operation of top slicing areas 250 ft. square, each with a central supply raise and ore-gathering raises, each block being worked as a unit. Mining operations in the Captain orebody, which connects with the boundary of the Inspiration property, were started by the room-and-pillar system, the rooms extending across the orebody, with widths of 10 to 15 ft., with 15- to 10-ft. pillars between. The intent was to operate the rooms as shrinkage stopes, permitting the pillars to crush when the ore was drawn from the rooms. It was found that the shrinkage stoping was unnecessary, so a system of block caving was adopted. This system was so successful in the Captain orebody that, about three years ago, the method of mining in the orebody was changed from top slicing to block caving, the method now in use. Native asphalt was produced by five companies in two States, Texas and Utah. Bituminous limestone, used primarily as a paving material for street and road repair, was produced by White Uvalde Mines and by Azrock Industries Inc., Uvalde County, TX. Gilsonite, a solidified hydrocarbon, found only in Utah and Colorado, was mined by American Gilsonite Co., a division of Chevron Resources Co. (a subsidiary of Standard Oil Co. of California), by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp., and by Hydrocarbon Mining Co. (a subsidiary of Oberon Oil Inc., a Utah corporation) from properties in Uintah County, UT.

The 1.8 mi (2.9 km) Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Light Rail Transit Tunnels and Station project is comprised of the underground segments of the 11.8 mi(18.8 km) Hiawatha Light Rail Transit route in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The 21 ft 2 in(6.5 m) diameter twin tunnels were mined 65 ft beneath one of the busiest airports in the United States using an earth pressure balanced tunnel-boring machine. This paper will provide a project overview, review the major equipment selected, tunnel segment casting, and describe excavation and lining operations for the tunnels and station.
