"The control of the slag properties has become very essential in improving the separation between the slag and the matte in the copper slag cleaning process. The goal of the present work is to characterize the copper converting slag through chemical analysis (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy detection (EDS) and thermal analysis (DSC). The majority of the identified elements were Fe, Cu, Si and 0. The XRD has presented compounds such as Fe2Si04, Si02, CuFe204, Fe304, and Cu. The main existence of copper element was the metallic copper due to the entrainment loss. Slight amounts of copper were existed as the CuFe204 in the slag. The density, viscosity, electric conductivity and the thermodynamic property of the molten copper converting slag were also investigated in the study.IntroductionCopper slag, which is produced during pyrometallurgical production of copper from ores, contains materials like iron, alumina, calcium oxide, silica etc. For every tonne of metal production about 2.2 ton of slag is generated [l]. The slags of copper converting process contain about 5% of copper and about 20% magnetite. The copper are present in the slags either as physically entrapped or in chemically dissolved [2-3]. The traditional slag cleaning method is electric furnace process including two steps, intensive slag reduction and quiet sedimentation. Although the process is suitable for the various copper slags, it is also with the higher energy consumption [ 4-7]. The slag characterization studies are the fundamental step in the definition of an appropriate recycling process for saving the energy consumption."

Gas Hydrates (Methane Hydrates) are solid, ice ? like substances composed of water and natural gas. They occur naturally in areas of the world where methane and water can combine at appropriate conditions of temperature and pressure and are found in the ocean bottom sediments and in some permafrost areas. Besides temperature and pressure, factors like bathymetry, sediment thickness, sedimentation rates, and total organic carbon content (TOC) also control gas hydrate formation in the sea. The stability of gas hydrates depends on the critical high pressure ? low temperature combination (0-17 bars, 0-25ºC), which in turn dependent on the mix of gases from which the mineral is formed. As the critical parameters can be altered by deposition, erosion or slumping of sediments, formation or melting of ice cover, rise and fall of sea level and sudden temperature changes induced by tectonic activities, current flows or volcanisms, the gas hydrates tend to be very unstable. It is becoming increasingly evident that naturally occurring gas hydrates are significant component of the shallow geosphere and are of societal concern in at least three major ways: as an energy resource, a geologic hazard and a major contributor for climatic changes.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting re-search to determine the influence of mining machine mounted water sprays on airflows and methane concentrations at the face when blowing ventilation systems are used. Tests were conducted in a full-scale ventilation gallery. Airflow speeds and directions were measured at several locations near the face with ultrasonic anemometers. Methane was released from the face and concentrations were measured in the entry at locations above the mining machine using fixed point methanometers. Changes in airflow speed, direction, and methane concentrations were correlated with water spray operations. The test results using different spray arrangements and water pressures showed that operation of the machine-mounted sprayers can improve face ventilation effectiveness by increasing the velocity of airflow moving toward and away from the face. The improved ventilation resulted in reduced methane levels near the face.

Iron ore beneficiation plants are facing economic pressures to treat more challenging ore types, improve efficiency and improve product quality. Better control and stability of the plant process in the face of increasing feed ore variability has been a goal for many of the operations facing these challenges.Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within an iron ore beneficiation plant. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials. Today, PGNAA technology is applied for elemental analysis within the iron ore industry on both bulk materials and slurries.Traditional composite sampling throughout the wet iron ore beneficiation process provides a delayed measurement of average properties but does not capture the true variability of the process in real-time. As such this is a limiting factor towards stabilisation and optimisation of the process. A PGNAA analyser provides real-time slurry elemental analysis of feed, concentrate and tails streams within the processing plant. The analytical data from the analyser can be exploited with a control strategy to correct and stabilise the plant on a much shorter time scale, delivering significant economic benefits and greater operational flexibility. The economic benefits include more stable product quality and a reduction in composite sampling and laboratory costs.Some example results will be presented from the Vale Vargem Grande iron ore beneficiation plants, which are utilising a six stream multiplexed Thermo Scientific PGNAA Slurry Analyser.CITATION:Noble, G, Stabile, A, Portes, E and Roberto, J, 2017. The iron orebodies of the Pilbara region are formed by supergene enrichment of banded iron formation and rarely do such processes produce orebodies with uniform grade distrib- utions. The orebodies being mined or developed have to be worked to grade/quality constraints imposed by contractual agreement rather than natural characteristics. Hence it is imperative to use a non-biased ore reserve calculation method. The geostatistical study of a typical iron orebody is presented. Emphasised are the geological characteristics of the orebody manifested as a variable grade distribution of iron and impurities; the determination of variogram model; subsequent uses of the model for computation of ore reserves and kriged lock estimates; computation of dispersion variance and conditional simulation of orebody.

The Sixtieth Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute convening at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, was declared in session at 10:10 a.m. by Past President Mike Zakotnik, Jr., General Superintendent, The Kemmerer Coal Company, Frontier, Wyoming. Mike introduced Claude P. Heiner, President, Minerals and Development Corporation, Salt Lake City, Utah; and President of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. President's Address Members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Min- ing Institute, guests, visitors and friends: I feel this is a distinct honor to talk to you on the occasion of this 60th regular meeting of the Institute. I once assumed this would be the Institute's 60th birthday, but later found that the first meeting was held in the State Capitol at Denver on November 12, 1912, at which time a comparatively small group of operators duly organized the Institute; a Mr. Weitzel of Colorado Fuel & Iron Company was then elected president and our late and dearly remembered Fred W. Whiteside, whose wife Gussie now carries Fred's work forward, was elected secretary. From Fred's records, early meetings were held semi-annually at rather irregular intervals, so that this 60th meeting is approximately the 52nd birthday of the organization and I am number 44 to serve as president. This latter development, I am sure, was conjured up last year by certain members at Glenwood Springs when I was absent. Anyway, I am honored and trust 'that these sessions will be both interesting and instructive in helping us on our way in the coal business.

Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

"To accommodate urbanization, cities are developing more underground space as a means to house public transportation systems and other entities. Underground developments often require construction of deep excavations in an environment dense with infrastructure. The success of such a project is related to the amount of impact imposed on adjacent structures and economic activity; impact should be limited to insignificant amounts in order to mitigate damage and disruption. Thus, large-scale urban construction projects require extensive monitoring of ground movements and installed support performance to facilitate informed decisions for adjustment of construction activities and support design when necessary.In downtown San Francisco, a unique large-scale excavation in saturated soft soils was constructed for the Transbay Transit Center (TTC). Construction of the excavation began in April 2012 and was completed almost two years later in February 2014. To monitor ground and structure response to construction, the project team used an extensive instrumentation network that included automatic inclinometers, piezometers, strain gages and total stations paired with survey markers. Innovative imaging techniques developed a record of construction in order to relate measured deformations to construction activity.Transbay Transit CenterThe Transbay Transit Center (TTC) is being constructed as a modern day transportation hub in downtown San Francisco to replace the former Transbay Terminal. The project is located in the South of Market area, less than half a mile from the San Francisco Bay. The final center will connect eight counties in the Bay Area through 11 different transportation systems, some of which will be housed in the TTC including Caltrain, Golden Gate Transit and California High Speed Rail. The aboveground structure will consist of two levels for retail and a third level with a bus terminal beneath a rooftop garden. There will be two subgrade levels to serve as a lower concourse and the train platforms. This structure required construction of a deep excavation closely surrounded by buildings and roads in an area thriving with economic activity."

The sizing of crushers depends on the expected crushing forces. However, the crushing forces develop differently with every individual rock while it is compressed by the working surfaces of the crusher. For sizing, this compression process has to be characterized by the maximum crushing force. The maximum crushing force depends on the strength, shape and size of the rock, the amount and velocity of the imposed displacement of the working surfaces of the crusher on the rock and the conditions of the contact surfaces. From experience it is known that the strength of the material and, therefore, the crushing forces depend on the size of the specimen. This dependence is the so called size effect. The determination is based on compression tests. The force development is recorded during the compression of the specimen and for every individual test the maximum force is determined. The occurring maximum crushing forces of several rocks with the same diameter comminuted under the same conditions can be assessed by a mean value and a variance. The relationship between the mean values of the cross section related maximum crushing forces FAmax and the corresponding sizes d of the specimens can then be described by mathematical functions. They are derived from different approaches (phenomenological, statistical and statistical-physical methods). The phenomenological methods are subjective and yield functions depending on the assumptions of a person, whereas the statistical and statistical-physical methods are based on an evaluated function and the optimization of the parameters.

"INTRODUCTION To increase the supply of ore needed to produce steel the Bureau of Mines has explored 187 mineral deposits containing chromium, iron, manganese, cobalt, nickel, fluorspar, tungsten, vanadium, or coal during the fiscal years. 1940-44, the deposits thus explored were selected from several thousand that were first examined to appraise their possibilities. The objective of the exploration was to determine the tonnage and grade of ores upon which mining, operations might be based, and the metallurgical processing that was most suitable for their utilization.Most of these deposits were sub-marginal by pre-war standards; hence there had been no incentive for their exploration, yet many such deposits were known to exist that probably contained ore sufficient in grade and amount to be utilized as war reserves.Some of the Bureau's exploration projects have disclosed substantial or even very large amounts of ore, much of which is fairly high in grade. In a few of them bodies of high-grade ore have been found, though in others the tonnage has proved to be too small or too low-grade for utilization."

Some years ago, when I was seeking an illusive fortune and gaining a precarious existence in the primeval forests of Brazil, there penetrated, even to my headquarters in that far-off land, the story of a new-found mining district, where mountain peaks were ribbed with silver, and valleys teemed with virgin gold. Such were the stories that caused hundreds of men to seek their fortune in Sierra Mojada, and to return heaping curses, loud and deep, upon the vivid imaginations that had evolved the glittering fiction. Nevertheless, the rumors had some foundation of truth. The ribs of silver exist, if not the placers of gold; and a flourishing town, of some three thousand people, with two leading mining companies and several smaller ones, in operation, represents what was permanent in the excitement of 1879. Geographical Situation. The town of Sierra Mojada is situated in the State of Coahuila, Republic of Mexico, in latitude 27' 24' N., and longitude 26' 40' W. of Washington, 4' 36' W. of the City of Mexico, and 103' 43' TV. of Greenwich. It lies about 70 miles, in an air-line, N. E. of Escalon station, on the Mexican Central Railroad; but by the present wagon-road, which makes a long detour to turn the mountain range, the distance to the station is about 105 miles. The nearest towns are Huajuquilla, in the State of Chihuahua, about 125 miles due west, and Cuatro Cienegas, in the State of Coahuila, 112 miles to the eastward. Between these points and the town of Sierra Mojada, and to the north of this town, the country is an immense desert, entirely uncultivated, almost uninhabited, and very little known. This

The treatment of anode slimes at Outokumpu Pori Copper Refinery comprises the following process stages: copper leaching by air oxidation, nickel removal by digesting slimes in concentrated sulphuric acid at 200 °C, and dissolving of the formed nickel sulphate into water, roasting of the slimes in controlled gas atmosphere at 600 °C for selenium removal, smelting of slimes in a Doré furnace, electrolytic refining of silver, sulphuric acid and aqua regia leaching of slimes from the silver cells followed by the reduction of gold and platinum metals. The paper discusses operational experiences and recent developments of the process.

A study was made of frictional ignitions in the underground coal mining industry from 1980 to 1992. The population of frictional ignitions was correlated to a variety of potential contributing factors including the mined coalbed, geographic location, mine production, methane gas emissions, and the type of mining equipment in use. The number of frictional ignitions reported in 1991 and 1992 surpassed the annual totals in all previous years included in the study. Most frictional ignitions occur during cutting operations at a coal face by a continuous miner. The average coal production of mines experiencing frictional ignitions is greater than the average of all underground coal mines throughout the survey period. Methane drainage may have produced a drop in the ratio of gas emissions to coal production (E/P) in mines experiencing frictional ignitions.

The reactions of alumina and alumina monohydrate with wet hydrogen fluoride gas were studied by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine the feasibility of producing commercial-grade aluminum fluoride from offgases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspars. The test results showed than an aluminum fluoride reactor operating at maximum efficiency could retain 96 percent of the fluorine contained in off-gases generated by pyrohydrolysis of siliceous fluorspar. The requirements are a reactor temperature of 200° C. and a reactor entrance gas containing 5 mole-percent hydrogen fluoride. Partial pressure equilibrium constants were determined for the reaction of alumina monohydrate and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 200° to 350° C. and for the reaction of alumina and wet hydrogen fluoride gas from 350° to 700° C. Both reactions are reversible, and they proceed in directions that are dependent upon the temperature and the relative HF:H2O concentration. Logarithms of the equilibrium constants were used to plot the reaction isobars; these can be used to calculate the theoretical maximum efficiency of a reactor processing wet hydrogen fluoride gas between 200° and 700° C. The theoretical maximum efficiency decreases with increasing temperature.

A thermo-chemical model of the copper P-S converter and a viscosity model for the converter slag have been developed to predict the behavior of magnetite in the converter slag, amounts of slag and matte, compositions of slag and matte, volume of the bath, bath temperature, slag blow endpoint determination, SEMTECH OPC signals, and the viscosity of converter slags. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions, and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment, and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. The effect of oxygen potential, SiO2/Fe in slag, detection of slag blow endpoint, and temperature on Fe3O4 content in converter slag, slag viscosity, liquidus temperature of converter slag and skimming operation has been modeled and discussed as well. Some applications of the industrial operations have been presented.

Stripping is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee† representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is due. Early History and Statistics The earliest mining operation on a commercial scale in the anthracite region was a stripping operation. This was the famous Quarry mine at Summit Hill, where this method was used only because no other method of mining a deposit of the nature found there seemed feasible to the early operators. A description of this stripping from a report published in 1821 is as follows: "The coal mine at present worked by the company lies on the top of a mountain, and appears to extend over some hundred acres of land covered by about 12 ft,. of loose black dirt resembling moist gunpowder, which can be removed by cattle with scrapers, and thrown into the valley below so as never to impede the work. The thickness of the coal is not known, but a shaft has been sunk in it 35 ft. without penetrating through. More than an acre of mine has been uncovered and presents a huge rock of coal, which is easily quarried without blasting."

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties. Grouting of recharge areas may facilitate minimizing the production of acid mine drainage if recharge pathways can be identified.
