Ausmelt has developed and commercialised high temperature reactor technology that has been applied to waste processing in the form of a catalytic waste converter (CWC). Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile converter containing an oxidised molten siliceous slag. Metals and other valuable products can be extracted from wastes for recycle into the community. Non-valuable components such as toxic organochlorinated compounds are destroyed and prevented from reforming. The slag produced is inert and can be safely used in building and concreting. The CWC can be applied to practically all types of wastes and examples from Ni-Cd batteries to toxic wastes are discussed. Additional benefits can be derived from large-scale operations if the surplus heat generated is exploited to produce steam and electricity.

Image-based remote sensing of rock fragmentation in mining and quarry applications essentially treats each rock in the image as a data object in order to determine the rock size distribution. An obvious challenge after rock delineation in a 2D image is the scale of the delineated objects. Conventionally, either objects of known size are placed in the scene or parallel laser pointer are used, both making some assumptions, to calculate scaling factors. These assumptions are applied to the whole scene rather than sensing individual rock attributes.

This paper discusses methods used in the estimation of natural gas reserves and the general conditions under which the various methods are applicable. The factors used in estimating natural gas reserves are reviewed. Errors which have been found to occur frequently are listed. Introduction The estimation of natural gas reserves has become of paramount interest because of the increasing importance of gas in the nation's economy. Gas is a most desirable fuel, a fact substantiated by the continued rise in the market demand. In addition, new uses for gas are being developed by the chemical, plastic, and associated industries, and plants are being built to make gasoline from natural gas. These are a few of the factors contributing to the importance of the nation's natural gas reserves. With the increased importance of gas there is an increase in the need for reliable estimates of the magnitude and availability of natural gas reserves. These estimates are being used currently: (I) to determine which fields contain sufficient available reserves to justify the construction of pipe-line outlets to serve particular markets; (2) to design pipe lines necessary to serve those fields adequately;] (3) to determine the location of industrial and chemical plants; (4) to finance the development of gas properties, and the construction of gas pipe lines; (5) to determine fair and adequate depletion allowances and depreciation rates; (6) to justify applications for gas pipe lines before various regulatory bodies; (7) to determine the number of wells required to exploit the reserves most economically; (8) to aid in establishing values for the purchase or sale of gas properties, and for purposes of inheritance taxes; (9) to determine equities under unitized operations; (10) to provide a basis for calculating the economics of gas-cycling operations. History or Estimation of Natural Gas Reserves The natural gas industry in the United States had its beginning during 1826 when natural gas was used for lighting the city of Fredonia, N. Y. The first natural gas pipe line was a 25-mi]le wooden line constructed from hollowed logs, connecting West Bloomfield and Rochester, N. Y. There is no record of an attempt to estimate the gas reserve at West Bloomfield but an attempt was made to determine the capacity of the well by measuring the time required to 611 a large balloon. One of the earlier publications concerning estimation of natural gas reserves is the "Manual for the Oil and Gas Industry," published by the Treasury Department, United States Internal Revenue, in i9i9. The Robinson project is based on the porphyry copper and gold deposits in the Robinson Mining District, near Ely in Eastern Nevada. The district was mined from the late nineteenth century to 1978 by Kennecott Copper Corporation and its predecessors. Operations ceased when falling copper prices in the late 1970's made their outdated mill and smelter complex at McGill uneconomical. In October 1991, Magma Copper Company (Magma) acquired the many claims that cover the known porphyry copper deposits in the district These occupy a disturbed area about nine miles long and three miles wide between the towns of Ely and Ruth. Magma proposes to build a copper / gold mine and concentrator and expand the existing gold leaching facilities. Several pits, previously mined by Kennecott Copper Corporation, will be enlarged; the use of larger, more modem equipment will result in higher productivity and lower operating costs in general. ICF Kaiser Engineers, of Oakland, California, were awarded the con-tract for detailed design of the process facilities, which was essentially complete by the end of 1993. The project at present is awaiting completion of the environmental permitting process; state air and water permits are in hand, and the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) current schedule indicates that the final obstacles to construction will be cleared by early fall of this year.

As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines program seeking improvements to the Bayer process, a typical Jamaican bauxite was heated at temperatures up to 500° C in hydrogen, and its leachability under Bayer process conditions was measured and properties of its leached residue were observed. The objectives were to find ways to decrease the amount of organic carbon in bauxite or in leach liquor derived from it without impairing its leachability, and to improve the leached residue's filterability. Techniques employed included heating bauxite under pressure in an autoclave with hydrogen, and in flowing hydrogen at ambient pressure in a tube furnace. Leaching tests were done with a 600-mL stirred reactor. In some of the leaching tests, ferrous sulfate (FeS04) was introduced before leaching to produce a partially magnetic product. Results showed that exposure to hydrogen at temperatures from 160° to 360° C progressively diminished the bauxite's content of organic carbon and decreased the ratio of organic carbon to aluminum in leach liquor, an improvement that would allow a process using hydrogen-treated bauxite to be operated at a smaller recycle ratio, thereby consuming less energy and allowing greater throughput for a plant of given capacity. The bauxite's leachability was not impaired by high-temperature pretreatments, except at temperatures higher than 280° C. Pretreatments in hydrogen produced black, partially reduced bauxite which upon leaching gave a residue that was attracted to a magnetic field and was amenable to separation from green liquor by a magnetic filtration method.

This study has appraised available deeper soil loosening equipment in the 1-4 ft. depth range, in the U.S. and abroad which has potential for Illinois prime farm-land reclamation. The appraisal was based on written and/or oral contacts with equipment manufacturers, reclamation experts, and visiting with selected equipment manufacturers. The results indicate that several manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory deeper soil loosening equipment which may have potential for application in Illinois. The pertinent information concerning each equipment with potential is presented in this report.

A coal shuttle car equipped with a pulsed laser optical ranging system to provide guidance for an automatic steering system was tested in production coal mining. Test results are presented for the two mines where testing took place, and some operator's reactions are included. Automatic steering control keeps the car cantered in an entry, and automatic turns are made at intersections as signaled by the operator. All other controls-tram, conveyor, brake, etc, remain manual and require operator control. Complete override of steering while in the automatic mode is retained by the operator, who may grab the steering wheel at any time and turn in opposition to the automatic signal by applying about 10 foot-pounds of torque.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes and evaluates a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based end-use data system for minerals that is designed to link the demand for minerals to economic activity in commercial uses. The new data system is two-dimensional. The first dimension of technical product classes (TPC's) measures the consumption of minerals in major primary intermediate products. The second dimension measures the consumption of these TPC's in SIC end-use sectors in sufficient detail to identify the major determinants of demand for each TPC. Intercomodity comparisons are achieved at the level of SIC two-digit major groups. The methodology was developed so that all available sources of information from Government and industry can be utilized at minimum cost. This information will be supplemented with additional data to be obtained by modifying existing Bureau of Mines canvasses so as to elicit additional quantitative responses from mineral producers. The new data system is expected to improve significantly the ability to forecast demand for minerals, and provide an information base that would, for the first time ever, permit resolution of such questions as trends in substitution among materials and the intensity-of-use of materials in end-use sectors. For the 42 TPC?s identified in the report, data are available for the new system from current sources or, except for three TPC?s that require new canvasses, can be obtained by modification of existing Bureau canvasses.

This paper describes the procedure for analysis of toxic fumes from the detonation of high explosives using the Large Chamber at the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC). This test is specified in 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 15.20 (g) as a requirement for the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA) approval of an explosive as permissible for use in underground coal mines. The Large Chamber replaced the Bichel gauge and CrawshawJones (C-J) apparatus in the 1989 revision of these regulations. To determine the safety of an explosive in terms of toxic gas production, the Large Chamber Test attempts to simulate mine conditions and miners' exposure to toxic gases from explosives.

THE separation of hematite by hysteretic repulsion was first brought to the attention of the public in 1922, by W. M. Mordey1. Three years later another paper2 was published and after another four years a third paper3 appeared in the South African publications. Certain data were lacking in these papers. In order to continue the work intelligently a knowledge of the shapes of the hysteresis curves for certain minerals was very necessary. This information was not available until the present year4. It was known that reduction of certain ores rendered them amenable to this process of separation but definite data in the form of curves showing exactly the effect of such treatment were lacking. Prob-ably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines 5-7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made 7 and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type.

THE expression "unit process " comes up with increasing frequency in discussions among metallurgists and mineral engineers, especially among those concerned with training the next generation. The unit process approach characterizes a significant advance along the road from metallurgy as an empirical art to metallurgy as a branch of engineering. The purposes of this paper are to define and list the unit processes in specific terms, to indicate the scientific and engineering principles basic to all the unit processes, and finally to show how these ideas have been applied to a reorganization of instruction in chemical metallurgy. UNIT OPERATIONS AND UNIT PROCESSES Metals are extracted from ores and other raw materials by stepwise procedures. In general, each metallic element is extracted by a different procedure. For many of the metals there is a choice of several flowsheets. However, the procedures all have steps in common. In fact, the many different flowsheets are all made up of a relatively small number of steps which are combined in different groups and sequences. For example, crushing, screening, roasting, sintering, melting, and gaseous reduction are steps which each appear in the flowsheets for extracting the majority of the metals. The individual steps or flowsheet units can be designated as unit operations or unit processes. These terms are well established in the field of chemical engineering, as the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' definition of chemical engineering shows: " Chemical engineering is that branch of engineering concerned with the development and application of manufacturing processes in which chemical or certain physical changes of materials are involved. These processes may usually be resolved into a coordinated series of unit physical operations and unit chemical processes. The work of the chemical engineer is concerned primarily with the design, construction, and operation of equipment and plants in which these unit operations and processes are applied. Chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the underlying sciences of chemical engineering, and economics its guide in practice."1a In this definition, the distinction between unit operations and unit processes is that the unit operations are physical while the unit processes are chemical. Table I gives a list of the principal unit operations and unit processes of chemical engineering, taken from Shreve. lb Table 2 lists the principal unit operations and unit processes used for metal extraction. The division between unit operations and unit processes is similar to the chemical engineers' distinction and also corresponds approximately to the division of labor between mineral dressing and chemical metallurgy which has been customary in the past. Furthermore, it will be noted that in the proposed classification the unit processes primarily involve chemical reactions and/or changes in state of aggregation; the unit operations, primarily do not involve either bulk

The Mineral Resources Institute of The University of Alabama conducted research on the removal of sulfur from coal using a combination of gravity concentration and flotation methods. The research utilized the gravity and centrifugal force capabilities of the Humphreys spiral to remove part of the pyritic sulfur and ash. Flotation of the Humphreys spiral coal concentrate removed additional sulfur and ash to yield products that conform to Federal air quality standards for sulfur oxide emissions. The clean coal products recovered by the combined process contained 7.7 to 8.0 percent ash, 0.12 to 0.16 percent pyritic sulfur, and 0.78 to 0.96 percent total sulfur. Pyritic sulfur rejection by the process was about 95 percent. In addition to obtaining good recoveries of high quality coal the tests demonstrated that the pyrite in the wastes could be isolated as enriched flotation products by the combined gravity - flotation apporach. Pyrite concentrates analyzing 25 to 33 percent sulfur were recovered. Potential benefits of the pyrite flotation step are recovery of a product of possible market value and the elimination of the pyrite from the waste ash which could be a potential acid water problem when impounded.

This paper presents a case history of design, prediction, probe and production pile driving monitoring, loading test, and installation of piles for a 22-story condominium tower in southwest Florida, U.S.A. ASC was commissioned to provide value engineering services in the proper selection of an economical and satisfactory foundation system. For the site-specific subsoil conditions, various types of foundations were considered and following an evaluation of high structural loads, site-specific constraints, and the production timeframe mandated by the project owner, a prestressed concrete pile-supported system was selected as an economical and effective foundation approach. The building foundations were designed for a compression capacity of 575 kN (65 tons) for the tower and 220 kN (25 tons) for the parking structure. The axial pile capacity and lengths were predicted using SPT91 software. The validation of these capacities was derived from driving 21 probe piles and performing static loading tests on selected probe piles (2 in compression and 1 in tension). The predicted pile capacities were evaluated with results from static loading tests on selected probe piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of an overall quality control program to install a total of over 920 prestressed concrete piles to lengths ranging from 11.5 to 16.5 m (37 to 54 ft) below existing ground elevation as part of the foundation support system.

PT Freeport IndonesiaÆs Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine is the new underground block caving mine within the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) which started production in mid-2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining method and will be the fourth underground mine opened within the EESS deposit. A review of the DOZ extraction bolting design was conducted in November 2000. The aim of this review was to re-evaluate the effectiveness of the current design in relation to bolt length and spacing and to challenge some questions about the technical background of the design. For instance, the influence of the rock condition on the design. To review this bolting design, several books and papers are reviewed and several experienced people have been contacted to give their opinion. The methodology used for this review is:reviewing the technical background of current design; collecting ideas and alternatives; collecting data from books and personal communication and conducting analysis; and conclusion and proposed design.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated temperature increases on the heads of resin-grouted bolts as indicators of the integrity of the anchoring of the bolt. Expected increases were calculated by the finite difference method; the calculations were checked by bolthead temperature measurements, both in the laboratory and in the field. The accuracy of the calculations varies with the validity of assumptions necessary to the process. Measurements in the laboratory produced a temperature rise of about 4.00 F on the head of a 4-foot bolt when installed with a full column of resin. This increase remained for about 30 minutes. Similar increases were noted on bolts installed at the White Pine mine, White Pine, Mich., but bolthead temperature increases in the mine lasted only about 10 to 15 minutes. When partial columns (reduced amounts) were used, the temperature increases were smaller.

The Territory of Afars and Issas is to receive its independence from France on June 27, 1977. The Territory's economic income was based on entrepôt trade through the port of Djibouti and trans-shipment of goods on the Chemin de Fer Franco-Ethiopian (CFE) railroad. The Territorial budget was scheduled to in- crease from $32.6 million3 in 1976 to $36 million in 1977, despite severe shortfalls in 1976 stemming from inflation and a persistent balance-of-trade deficit. Subsidies from France continued to sustain the economy, and the French pledged to provide approximately $140 million in aid annually after independence. In 1976, financial agreements were concluded with a number of Arab oil-producing countries, including Saudi Arabia which granted $10 million toward development projects. The new Republic of Djibouti is scheduled to become the 49th member State of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and the 21st member of the Arab League, and to receive aid from their financial institutions. "Assessing the stability of a slope cut in rock is basically a problem of engineering geology - geology, because it involves a sound understanding of the important aspects of geology, such as geological structure, ground water, weathering and other natural phenomena, which all relate to or exist in a geological environment, and engineering, in that quantitative evaluations and calculations are necessary, these being based on mechanics and relating to the strength of the geological materials and the forces causing instability of the slopes. The engineering geologist must make every attempt to. provide, in a quantitative way, information on those geological factors which are necessary for making calculations of the probable stability of the slope. These include numerical assessments of quantities relating to the characteristics of structural discontinuities, rock types, topography, hydrogeology, tectonic history and other environmental factors. Based on the development and extension of these general principles, both preliminary and final slope stability studies of some open pits in South Africa, Swaziland and Zambia have been conducted. Some of the basic concepts and techniques developed to carry these studies out are described."

For many years, researchers around the world have been investigating coal pillar stability. Many have focused on trying to optimize the size of the pillars by examining stable and failed pillars in underground coal mines. For mines that are already in operation or companies that are opening a new mine adjacent to an existing mine where the pillar dimensions and stability can easily be determined, this is the preferred technique. However, when a new mine is planned for an area where there has been relatively little mining, then samples of the coal need to be drilled and tested for strength. Because of the fractured nature of coal, this lab testing is often problematic and may often yield poor results because of the limited size and number of samples that can be obtained from the core. To remedy this problem, research was conducted in the labs at SIUC to determine if improvements could be made when optimizing the size of pillars for underground coal mining in Illinois. Through a greater understanding of the relationship between dimensions and strengths of coal samples tested in the lab, it was hoped the in situ strength of coal pillars could be determined with greater accuracy. This could allow the extraction ratio to be increased and more of the coal resources in Illinois recovered without impacting the safety of the mine workers. Many different agencies around the world have published recommended minimum numbers of samples for strength determination based on the size of the coal samples. For two inch cubes, uniaxial testing of at least seven samples is recommended and this minimum number decreases to four when testing four inch cubes. However, the laboratory testing of coal from two seams thus far has suggested this number should be almost doubled to accurately determine the coal strength. Testing also showed there is a pronounced decrease in the variation in the strength of the samples tested as the dimensions of the sample were increased. From the testing results thus far, it is recommended that a sample size versus strength curve be constructed for every coal seam for Illinois. Creating such a curve will better determine both the minimum number of samples and minimum sample dimensions for that seam or region of a particular scam. A second set of tests were conducted in the laboratory to determine the increase in strength with reduction in height for samples with the same width and length. In Illinois, typical pillar dimensions are 40 to 80 feet (12.2 to 24.4 m) wide and long, with coal thickness varying from about 4 to 9 feet (1.22 to 2.74 m). This provides width/height ratios ranging from 4.5 to 17.5. Coal samples having width/height ratios ranging from 0.5 to 13 have been tested thus far. As with most pillar design formulae, the strength of the Murphysboro coal versus width/height ratio was linear and closely matched shape factors published by other researchers. The laboratory testing thus far has identified three factors that affect the strength of laboratory samples, the number of discontinuities, the angles of critical discontinuities, and the shape of the samples. The factor that probably had the most pronounced effect on the strength of the coal samples was the angle of critical discontinuities. This testing has confirmed that there is still a gap that needs to be bridged between the strength obtained from laboratory testing and the in situ coal strength predicted.
