The Sloan Ranch kimberlite complex is located approximately 130 km north-northwest of Denver in the Precambrian core of the northern Colorado Front Range (Figure 1). A Devonian age for the complex is suggested by the fossil assemblages in limestone xenoliths (Chronic and others, 1969), and by paleomagnetism of the kimberlite (E. E. Larson, personal communication, 1986). The presence of diamond was first reported in rocks from the Sloan diatreme by McCallum and Mabarak (1976). Prior to this time, the distinctive- appearing host rock of the Sloan diamonds had been quarried for use as terrazzo stone; examples may be seen in the floors of the airports in Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyoming. The Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company obtained a lease on the Sloan property in 1980. During the next four years Superior built and fine-tuned a highly efficient diamond recovery facility, explored and tested the Sloan deposit, and used Sloan as a site for testing numerous exploration techniques for future use in a continuing exploration program in the Colorado-Wyoming kimberlite province. The Sloan property was ultimately determined to be sub- economic, but the lessons learned there have been very helpful in subsequent exploration efforts.

The interpretation of coal seismic data requires a certain precision and accuracy to make the results more reliable. The signature of the seismic wavelet provides a host of valuable geologic information. Subtle features and anomalies, not easily observed in conventional black and white seismic sections, are enhanced through color attribute displays in terms of frequency, amplitude and phase. Coal seam anomalies like sandstone washouts produce a distinct pattern in frequency and amplitude displays due to the change in the net acoustic impedance contrast. Faults produce frequency and amplitude variations due to interference within the Fresnel zone that straddles the fault. The magnitude of displacement is estimated by studying the effects of faults on reflection amplitudes and frequency from computer-generated models.

This report will differ slightly from the traditional scientific and technical discussions given at this type of conference. It will focus on the personal experiences and choices that I undertook when deciding on my graduate position and location after completing university studies. Throughout the duration of my course I had experience in both fly-in, fly-out operations in the Pilbara and residential operations in the West Australian Goldfields. These experiences, though limited, allowed me to explore the two different methods and their pros and cons, and consequently to make my choice for graduate employment. Throughout the duration of my degree I believed it was important to gain a basic understanding of the two methods, focusing on lifestyle and personal interactions. The decision that a residential site suited my personality and lifestyle then allowed me to refine my job applications to a more specific list of mine sites and companies, resulting in a residential position with BHP Billiton at their Iron Ore operations in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

MORE than 20 years have passed since the publication of Lindgren and Ransome's report on the Cripple Creek District,1 which was made when the district was much more active and prosperous than in recent years. They concluded that the output of the district, which had reached its maximum of about $18,200,000 in 1900, would gradually decline, and their conclusion has been confirmed by records of subsequent production. Between 1905 and 1915 annual declines were partly compensated by encouraging increases, especially in 1908, 1914, and 1915; but a rapid continuous decline followed, due largely to the war and its after effects, until in 1922 the value of output was only slightly more than $4,000,000. It rose to nearly $5,000,000 in 1924, but declined again in 1925 and in 1926, when it was about $4,400,000, and represented ores mainly from deep levels in the Cresson and Portland mines. The profitable operations of these two mines were the principal factors leading to a study of ore at deep levels in the district by the U. S. Geological Survey in coopera-tion with the Colorado Metal Mining Fund. The principal reasons for Lindgren and Ransome's conclusion were three: (1) the greater cost and difficulty of deep exploration; (2) the decrease in the number of veins with increasing depth, and (3) the probability that the telluride ore, believed to have formed at comparatively low temperature, would not persist indefinitely -in depth. Operations since they made these statements have verified the first two, but call for some modification of the third. Rich telluride, ore is being mined at a profit in the Portland mine 3000 ft. below the present surface, or 5000 ft. below the original surface of the Cripple Creek volcano, as interpreted by Lindgren and Ransome. The question arises, therefore, as to the number and extent of such deep deposits, and the answer, so far as it can now be given, must be based mainly on structural data, supplemented by data on the processes of ore deposition. The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. Introduction Engineering Health and Safety is concerned with the understanding of the complex interplay between the risk of injury with technological ,environmental, individual, organisational and legal factors. With this understanding, the design and decision making processes can be balanced with the other objectives of industry and employment to arrive at solutions which place appropriate controls on technology and other aspects of human activities to prevent disease and injury to personnel in the coal mining industry and the design of safe production machinery and ancillary equipment. Advances in the detection and diagnosis of causes of diseases and the need for engineering health and safety in the coal mining industry has increased the need for appropriate education and training. Hazards arise in many forms; exposure to toxic chemicals, escape of radio - active materials, explosion of pressure vessels, contact with moving machinery, exposure to dust, environmental dangers such as excessive noise, high temperatures and manual handling etc. As technology advances, these dangers become more complex and less clearly defined and less easily perceived. Consequently, the ways of controlling the dangers also become more complex and wide ranging. The need to educate and train people in coal mining applications of engineering health and safety has been enhanced over the last five years and courses should be established to fulfil the need for competent people to deal with the problems which modern coal mining technology creates together with the legislation that governs engineering health and safety and to carry out research and development work in the coal mining industry. Industrial Involvement The engineering health and safety experts must be prepared to take a more active part in monitoring conditions that exist in the mining industry, and not design from information obtained from the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic expertise and off-the-shelf components from other industries. Surveying and control of the operating environment must be essentially the concern of the engineering health and safety experts and, whilst it is not possible to create a perfect environment for each machine, every effort must be made to minimise failures and hence plan for designs which will maximise

The calculation of the liberation spectrum in the product from continuous milling operations is a problem of considerable importance, and it is difficult to solve because the population balance equation must be integrated in two-dimensional space. Complete solutions require a very detailed knowledge of the complex interactions between the fracture patterns and the mineralogical ore texture when brittle particles are subject to impact fracture. Most of the liberation models that have been developed to date apply only to batch comminution processes and under these conditions the liberation problem can be studied in isolation. When the comminution is continuous and forms a unit operation in a flowsheet that includes classification and separation operations, the situation is very different, and then the liberation of the minerals must be described when single particles of known mineralogical composition are fractured. Important industrial examples are conventional milling circuits closed by hydrocyclone and regrind mills in flotation plants. This paper presents an efficient computational algorithm for the calculation of the liberation spectrum produced by continuous milling operations. The algorithm relies heavily on the detailed internal structure of the Andrews-Mika diagram. The modifications that are required to make this diagram apply to practical ore minerals, and the internal structure of this diagram can be established using single-particle fracture on mono-size, mono-grade material but suitable liberation models are essential to interpret the data in terms of the cross transfer coefficients required for the population balance procedure. Models proposed by Leroux (1992) and King (1990) are compared to experimental data.

Analyses of light oils produced from the fluidized carbonization of coal at 485°, 550°, 600°, and 660° C are presented. Tar vapors from 485 C fluidized carbonization were thermally treated at 600°, 700°, and .800° C, and the analyses of light oils produced by this treatment are also presented. Procedures were developed for analysis of coal carbonization light oil by gas chromatography to permit a more definitive analysis than can be obtained by the conventional distillation procedure. An increase in low-boiling olefins, benzene, and toluene, a decrease in low-boiling paraffins, and little change in the remainder of the aromatics was observed with increased temperature of carbonization.

The physical phenomena which influence gas flow in the bosh and hearth of a blast furnace are discussed including the hold-up of slag as a mechanism which can result in a flooding condition. An equation is defined which describes the limitation to wind volume arising from the flooding condition. Implications of the various factors influencing bosh and hearth gas flow on furnace operation are discussed. Coke quality is shown to be the most important factor in the aerodynamics of these zones and coke requirements are defined for the Port Kembla No. 5 BF which has an inner volume of 2670 m3.

PREVIOUS studies of the shock loading of randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregates have firmly established that, after rather short load duration, hydrostatic compression closely approximates the shocked state.' However, McQueen deduced from pressure measurements with good time resolution that, during shock loading, metals begin to undergo a stress relaxation at the yield stress. He suggested that the relaxation is due to plastic deformation accompanying the change from a one-dimensional compression to a three-dimensional, hydrostatic, compression.' Stress relaxation may occur faster as stress is increased above the yield stress, but the existence of unidirectionally compressed states for finite times suggests that the concept of a unidirectionally distorted lattice should furnish considerable insight into the mechanical behavior of materials subjected to shock loading. Here, a crystallographic analysis is presented for the hypothetical situation where atom motion may be considered as unidirectional which, as indicated above, is a useful extension of the macroscopic concept of shock loading to the microscopic domain. Only motion caused by the com-pressive forces is treated; i.e., lattice vibrations upon which this motion is superimposed, as discussed by Fitzgerald, are ignored.3 The purpose of the analysis to be presented is to develop a description for single crystals of the lattice rotations that occur for idealized uniaxial strain deformation. The usefulness of such an analysis in realistic deformation is to give a method of specification of those properties of an initially distorted lattice which would affect the subsequent deformation. Non-axial complications that arise experimentally, such as off-axis rarefaction waves, must be treated in proper context. Consider the material element shown in Fig. 1 and let the compression be uniform at all regions of the element. Then, any interior point of the element is displaced in proportion to its distance from the base of the element. Accordingly, if the top of a unit element is displaced by an amount, (-K), with respect to the base, a point P(X, Y) will be displaced by (-KY). Crystal planes are, therefore, rotated by the compression. Analysis of this rotation may be accomplished from the geometry shown in Fig. 1 where the line OP is the edge of the plane {hkl} and N is its normal. In the Frick District of U, So Steel Corporation, we have had more than 37 years of experience in the use of multiple-fan ventilation systems, in our coal mines. In our Colonial field, with a long belt installation, we have mined 85 million tons of coal with the use of the multiple fan system of ventilation. In our Palmer field, with the use of the same arrangement, we have mined 90 million tons of coal--a total of 175 million tons without one accident attributable to improper mine ventilation. The same system, fundamentally, has been installed in our expanding Robena operations and at its present stage of development we are using eight fans to ventilate this area. To date we have mined 55 million tons of coal with very encouraging results and again without any accidents attributable to ventilation.

Au/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation and tested for the room temperature photocatalytic reforming of methanol in aqueous solution. These catalysts proved to be more active, on a molar basis, than Pd/TiO2. The dependence on loading of gold was different from that of palladium, showing a double maximum in yield at 0.1 and 2 wt. % with low rate below 0.01% and above 10%. A model is proposed for the reaction involving band gap excitation of titania electrons which are used to oxidise the methanol via adsorbed CO. With palladium, photoreforming of CO and water can be achieved, but this is much less effective on gold, presumably due to the much weaker bonding of CO on Au.

Most ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely. This conclusion is based on complete solidification patterns of big-end-up and big-end-down ingots developed from dumped and split ingots. New mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon adequate width of vertical core. A LTHOUGH it has long been recognized that the A internal soundness of ingots is principally been recognizedthatthedependent on the process of solidification, knowledge of this process is still only fragmentary. The mechanisms causing the several types of segregation in ingots, which mechanisms are necessarily related to the solidification process, are not well understood. In absence of a better conception of the solidification process, it seems hardly surprising that mold design varies widely. Guiding principles for mold design are needed. At stake in the improvement of ingot quality are not only improved properties of steel but also appreciably higher yields of sound steel, which would considerably decrease manufacturing costs. In the present study, following a general description of the several types of segregation in ingots, Fig. 1, complete solidification patterns of a big-endup and a big-end-down ingot, including the zones of accelerated solidification, have been reconstructed. In both ingots, a core of vertical solidification extends from the base cone to the hot-top junction. Based on the finding that ingots complete solidification vertically rather than transversely, as has been previously assumed, new mechanisms for segregation in ingots are proposed. Internal soundness in ingots is found to depend upon the width of the vertical core, which in turn depends principally upon the width to height (w/h) ratio of the ingot. Solidification patterns of ingots are of three general types: 1—those in which vertical solidification does not reach the top, 2—those in which vertical solidification just reaches the top of the ingot, and 3—those in which vertical solidification reaches the top some time before transverse solidification would reach the middle of the ingot, so that a vertical core of definite width at the top of the ingot is developed. Axial defects vary characteristically with the solidification pattern. Examples of ingots of each type are presented. Dumped ingot data reported by Nelson' have been used in developing families of curves of transverse and vertical solidification, and in deriving the effect of the w/h ratio upon the solidification pattern. Photographs of many ingots split at Homestead and at Duquesne Works, United States Steel CO., as well as those published by the British Iron and Steel Institute,' have been studied and analyzed. In the interest of brevity, only typical ingots of each type or classification from the above sources have been reproduced. Segregation in Ingots Segregation in ingots falls into three principal classifications: 1—lamellar segregation, as revealed in sulphur prints (Figs. 2 and 3); 2—zone segregation, or broad variations in composition; and 3— interdendritic, or microsegregation. The last class, of minor importance, is not considered here. "Coal fines produced during processing are difficult to dewater and result in a lower quality product and consequent lower value. A South African coal mine experiences severe difficulties with belt filter dewatering operations due to the presence of fines reporting from the thickener underflows. Plant 2 currently handles super-fine particles of size -34 µm and has low belt filter efficiency: excessive moisture retention lowers the product quality and strains downstream processing. It was necessary to determine an alternative method for dewatering these fines. Blending of fine material with coarser material was proposed as a solution. The effect of coal particle size and layering during ultrafines belt filter dewatering was evaluated using various blends of the fine Plant 2 material with coarser Plant 1 material. The best layering arrangement of the two materials and its optimum blend required to achieve reduced filter cake moisture content was determined in practise using a vacuum filter to simulate belt filtration. A blend of the two materials gave improved dewatering efficiency for the belt filters compared with that of the Plant 2 material alone. The best layering configuration was with Plant 2 material at the bottom and Plant 1 material on top. The optimum blend for industrial applications comprised 48% fines from Plant 2. IntroductionFines are produced during the processing of coal. It is estimated that 2 to 3% of run-ofmine coal reports to the ultrafine portion (-100 µm) (le Roux, 2005). The particle size of coal is inversely proportional to the amount of water adsorption, so smaller particles adsorb more moisture. Moisture removal requires either mechanical processes or thermal drying: mechanical processes are less expensive, but the fines still have high moisture retention. Discarding of fines leads to economic losses, so it is essential that they be dewatered so that they can then be sold as a product: fines need to be treated for both resource management and conservation reasons (Kenney, 1994). Removal of free surface moisture from ultrafine coal particles using a belt filter therefore remains a process that needs to be continuously improved. Ultrafine coal originating from a thickener underflow is known to be difficult to dewater owing to factors such as filter cloth blockage and moisture retention due to clogging. Mixing of finer and coarser materials has been proposed to deliver better dewatering efficiency and improved the quality of the recycled water (Kenney, 1994)."

The technical literature on the general subject of crushing contains many references to the work of investigators on the laws governing, and the factors entering into, the economical production of fine materials. In fine grinding, whether for the purpose of producing fine material, or for the unlocking of minerals in an ore, close control of the screen sizes of primary-crusher products is of secondary consideration and accordingly has received very little attention. The growth and development of the nonmetallic industries, however, have drawn more attention to primary crushing. Many of these industries are interested in the production of relatively coarse products that meet certain definite size specifications, a condition entirely different from that existing in the field of ore dressing. Under such conditions, a knowledge of the factors governing the selection Paid operation of primary-crushing equipment is essential to the economical production of a satisfactory material.

The Mercur Mine's autoclave is an alkaline pressure oxidation system, operating at 220°(428°F) and 3061 kPa (444 psig) (total). Up to 725 metric tons (800 st) of ore, grading 2.02 g per mt (0.059 oz/st) Au and containing 1 to 2% sulfide sulfur, are treated daily in this circuit. A mineralogical and chemical investigation was initiated to locate the cause of lower than anticipated gold recoveries. Greater than 70 wt. % of reduced sulfur is oxidized; therefore, the autoclave is operating at specification. The low recoveries were attributed to increased concentrations of organic carbon in refractory ore. Activated carbon concentration in the attached CIL circuit was increased from 15 to 40 g per 1, leach temperature held below 21°C (70°F), and carbon flow changed to counterflow. These measures resulted in gold recovery improving from 75 to 82%.

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

I have no beitation in saying, that if the students have been previously instructed in the theoretical part of thrir studies, by lectitras and practice during the winter, the plan would be an admirable one. Frorn the work you have done at our mines this spring, I feel sure that you would be perfectly competent to curry out your plan, and 1 shall gladly aid you in uny wny I can. A volunteer class of thirteen students was formed, and the first summer school was held at Drifton, in July and August of that year (1877). The following extract, from an editorial notice in the iden of the organization of the school and the work required of the stiudens. "The students, on reporting to Professor Munroe, were divided into sqoade of two or three men each, and on Monday, July 2d, were aesigned to the qre of skilled miners, selected for the purpose by the mine boss, for instruction in gangway work. Half of the students worked in the morning and the other half in the atternoon, one squad at a time with each miner, The times of going and coming to and from work were so arranged that each student spent four to four and a half hours in the mine each day.
