Atlas Iron Limited’s (Atlas) Abydos Mine has developed its Scarborough open pit proximal to a rock shelter that has been assessed as a significant Aboriginal heritage site by the Traditional Owners of the land. The rock shelter, named Yurlu Kankala, is located to the north-west of the pit with a stand-off distance of 35 m. Within Atlas’ Native Title Agreement with the Traditional Owners, and approvals from the Western Australian Department of Aboriginal Affairs, commitments have been made to conduct mining in a way that avoids or at least minimises disturbance and damage to the rock shelter. This complies with the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA) and respects the heritage and culture of the Traditional Owners.CITATION:Bow, B G and Jiang, J J, 2018. "In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.Bubble column performances were significantly affected by unpredictable technical difficulties met to maintain continuous feeding in the bubble column and by a significant settling of the heavy solid particles. Nonetheless, theoretical kinetic data, extrapolated from results in batch conditions, could be compared to those obtained in continuous tests, in bubble column and in mechanically agitated reactors. These kinetic data were used to evaluate the influence of reactor design and configuration choice on bioleaching performances."

The results of the cyanide-operations, given in detail in the following paper, show the progress that is being made at the Minas del Tajo. The old pan-amalgamation process, in operation up to and including 1905, while paying a profit on high-grade ores, was no longer able to treat profitably the ores in sight at that time; hence an alteration in the process was imperative. This paper does not deal with the typical start-up issues of equipment, production capacity or work force. This is a description of the challenges faced and the changes made by the project team to bring to fruition the reconstruction of Port Inland. Many honored traditions and norms had to be overturned to find the winning combination that provided the productivity, flexibility and cost necessary to survive in today's competitive minerals environment. This paper covers the innovation in terms of machinery, operations, and management philosophy that permitted the renovation and reopening of Port Inland as a commercial limestone producer in the spring of 1992. Port Inland, constructed by Inland Steel in 1930, operated as a captive source of metallurgical grade limestone for the steel industry until its closure in 1989. Located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the north edge of Lake Michigan, the operations consist of a deep water port facility with crushing, screening and stockpile storage for 500,000 tons of finished product at the port. Ninety-nine percent of the stone is shipped via lake boat to ports within the Great Lakes. The operation is unique in that both metallurgical Dolomite and Limestone are produced on site. In 1930, Port Inland was at the fore front of technological advancement. It was the first major mining operation to use roller bearings and other equipment innovations. Over the 60 years of operation, Inland Steel placed emphasis on steel making technology and iron ore mining at the detriment of the limestone operation. By the early 80's, Port Inland was no longer a leading competitor. Inland Steel, unable or unwilling to spend the capital to modernize, closed the facility in the fall of 1989.

Outbursts, the sudden and violent out- pouring of material into mine openings, is a ground control problem increasingly encountered in the United States as deeper seams are developed. Outbursts, caused by several mechanisms, are the result of the loading of ground support systems be- yond their designed capacity to failure, manifested in a violent release of stored energy. There are several types of outbursts typical to deep underground coal mines. - Outbursts of the coal face due to the presence of pressure abutments in close proximity to the face. These outbursts are usually accompanied by liberation of large amounts of methane. - Instantaneous convergence of the ribs and floor due to overloading and failure of ribs which lengthens the beam of floor strata sometimes resulting in a chain reaction failure of the mine floor. - violent failure of the confined core of a pillar due to rapid loading beyond the yield point of the pillar.

No method of roof control yet devised has proven to be universally acceptable for the wide range of strata conditions experienced in U. S. coal mines. However, a relatively new innovation, the roof truss, has proven itself capable of preventing roof failures which both conventional and resin bolting could not. Presently, the economics of roof trusses are not favorable when compared to bolting due primarily to drilling and installation procedures, but this is expected to change with improved truss and equipment designs. To realize the full potential of this new method of roof control, design criteria are needed which can optimize the effect of the truss for varying strata conditions. A review of the literature reveals that some work has been conducted on the roof truss. Cambrell and Haynes1 (1970) showed that the roof truss is superior to angled roofbolts installed through a header. Sheorey, Verma, and Singh2 (1973) used statics to prove that the optimum angle of inclination should be greater than 45°. However, to date, no systematic attempt has been made to establish design criteria. In this paper, the problem was approached in three ways. First, model studies were performed to determine general trends of truss support as a function of a number of variables. This provided a better understanding of the support mechanism involved. Secondly, beam theory was employed to calculate the actual support capacity of a truss, realizing the many simplifications, assumptions, and shortcomings of this approach to such a complicated problem. Last, field testing will be utilized to test the hypotheses previously developed and provide hard data to further synthesize roof truss design criteria. Field testing has recently commenced and should be complete before mid 1977.

The processes by which particles and bubbles interact capture many of the central concepts of colloid science and hydrodynamics. This area of research embraces hydrodynamics, interfacial(including capillary) forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry. In this review, we discuss collision, attachment and stability efficiencies. We deal with the identification of a flotation ?domain?, the deformation of a bubble surface upon interaction with a solid surface, the kinetics of three phase contact line expansion and the determination of attachment efficiencies through to the direct measurement of bubble-particle interaction forces. We have recently carried out a test of collision theory where the latter embraces both inertial and centrifugal forces. The real challenge is now to quantitatively describe the behaviour of real systems and to incorporate a reliable description of the behaviour of particles in flotation froths. The approach described is very robust when applied to flotation, both from qualitative and quantitative points of view, providing an intellectual foundation for understanding this complex process in separation science and technology.

The sudden death of Dr. Drown, on Nov. 17, 1904, brought to multitudes the pang of personal loss. Of all those who, as students at Lafayette College, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Lehigh University, were brought under his influence, not one can have forgotten him, and all will now acknowledge, with an unfading gratitude, what they owe in professional equipment to his wise, clear, skillful guidance, and in character to his sympathetic, stimulating personality. Outside of this wide circle, the experts of both hemispheres will lament the departure of one who, in his department of scientific investigation, both knew what work was needed, arid how to do it so that it needed not to be done again. The older members of the Amierican Institute of Mining Engineers will remember with gratitude the part he took, as Secretary from 1873 to 1884, in promoting the interest of that organization, and in shaping the plan and policy which it has followed with such noteworthy success. And, in addition to all these (though partly included among them), there are a host of friends, who can scarcely think of the public loss by reason of their own. Thomas Messenger Drown was born March 19,1842, at Philadelphia, Pa. His parents were natives of New England; and he was the youngest of their three sons. Regional and orientation geochemical stream sediment surveys were carried out by the Quebec Department of Energy and Resources in southwestern Quebec, over a part of the Mont Laurier Terrane of the Grenville Province. The area contains some small stratiform zinc deposits. The response of Zn mineralization to geochemical surveys is weak; the known mineralization is not dermed by anomalous samples and consistent patterns. This study uses a technique that increases the geochemical signature of Zn mineralization in filtering out geochemical background components related to lithologies and surficial conditions. The background variations were modelled using principal component analysis, and the filtering technique consists of the partial reconstruction of the data matrix from results of principal component analysis. The filtering procedure considerably enhances the Zn anomalies located in the catchment basins of Zn deposits, and defines some new anomalies in proximity to the marbles of the Mont-Laurier Terrane, the principal metallotect of Zn mineralization.

This paper addresses considerations for the use of artificial support of pit walls in surface mines, a new project of the Bureau of Mines. Results to date indicate that a polymer-coated cable with embedded grit could provide good anchorage for stabilizing benches and highwalls, and an electronic method of recording discontinuities in the field is being reviewed and developed for application to mining. The objectives of the work in progress are to define the engineering parameters and evaluate the concepts for artificial supports in order to provide safe working environments when pit slopes are steepened to increase ore recovery and reduce overburden handling.

A short course, held during the SME Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ in February, focused on software for surface and underground mine modeling. The objectives of the short course were to review techniques for surface and underground mine planning. Mine planning software vendors were invited to demonstrate how their software runs, given a standard data set. Six vendors of mining-specific software participated in the workshop. They were Exploration Computer Services (MINEX 3D), GEMCOM Services, Inc. (PC-MINE), KJRA Systems (VULCAN), Mine Development Associates (SURPAC), Micromine and MINEsoft (TECHBASE). Data set A data set was created to challenge the capabilities of each vendor's software. The criteria used for the data set selection were: • a minimum of 300 drill holes; • the data must include topography, drill hole survey, assay and formation contacts; • the deposit was multimetallic; and • there was the potential to be mined by surface and underground methods. The data set used was an actual, complex copper ore body with a small amount of gold. The ore body was close enough to the surface to be mined by surface techniques. Part of it, though, was also amenable to underground mining. To further complicate the problem, a river ran across the area of the ore body. This presented mine planners with the problem of either moving the river or mining around or below it. The ore body had not been mined, so no data was available for the tons and grade actually produced. Data for the mine planning problem was distributed to each vendor about two months before the short course. They had the opportunity to load the data into their systems, build an ore body model and perform preliminary work. During the first day of the workshop, the vendors received problems concerning the ore body. They went to work on their machines, attempting to show short course participants how their software could help solve the problem.

On the face of it this is an easily answered question. Modern technology and life as we know it today would be impossible without industrial minerals and the responsible utilisation of mineral resources is essential for the economic wellbeing of the nation. The quarrying industry supplies a high percentage of the industrial minerals used in New Zealand and our role therefore, is to ensure a constant supply of high quality roading and concrete aggregates so that society and the community as a whole can develop. We must do this in a manner which causes the least possible disruption to members of the community, which efficiently utilises all the valuable resources, which causes as little pollution as possible and last but by no means least, creates realistic profit for the operator. It is only by achieving a reasonable profit that we are able to continue in business and therefore play our part in the development of the country. Unfortunately, quarries have a poor image and are not generally popular, as on the whole, they are noisy, dirty and dusty and attract large trucks which create traffic problems. Judging by the amount of restrictive legislation with which we have to comply today, not even government or the local authorities want quarries which presents the industry with some serious problems, some of which will be outlined in this paper.

It has previously been reported that metal loadings of up to 6.8 m. eq/g. of dry coal can be obtained by contacting brown coal or lignite with ammoniacal solutions of ammine forming metals. Application of equilibrium expressions to further experimental results indicates that the extraction is by ion exchange, that the exchange is divalent-univalent for Zn, Cd and Ni, but is mainly univalent-univalent for Cu, and that to obtain reasonably uniform values for the equilibrium constants correction formulae must be applied to compensate for multiple functionality of the coal and its pH dependence in ion exchange. The results are shown to be consistent with the hypothesis that metal ammine complex cations are exchanged for protons derived from carboxyl and/or phenolic hydroxyl groups in the coal.

The techniques described employ a computerized analysis and a new method of data presentation called composite graphing. The underlying theory, its practical application to the data, and the experimental equipment and procedure are described.

The purpose of this report is to clarify the interpretation of some phases of previous progress reports5/ on the use or omission of stemming that have been brought to the attention of the authors by readers. As the stemming problem was approached from an entirely disinterested viewpoint and the data were presented impartially, results of investigations published in previous reports5/ were obtained under a definite set of conditions and procedure, and they may of may not be duplicated under different conditions and procedure in actual mining practice. Final conclusions regarding the use or omission of stemming in blasting have not been reached pending completion of all aspects of this investigation.

The feasibility study of Escondida Norte (ENorte), recommended a slope angle design for the Final Pit. But, according to the experience obtained with the slope adjacent to the West wall of ENorte, in which Compañia Minera Zaldívar (CMZ) gained in its phase 4, a slope of similar geotechnical characteristics will be exposed in the West Wall of Phase 1 (Premine) and of the Final Pit, with an interramp angle 53º and with very good stability results. In this regard, Minera Escondida Ltd. (MEL) performed a study of the slope angles for the phases mentioned and according to this delivered the results of this evaluation, the recommendations and/or the necessary conclusions in the design to ensure that the slopes are stable enough and may enable safe operational management of them.

Most systematic studies carried out on passive treatment systems incorporating the use of limestone drains, under aerobic or anaerobic conditions, essentially deal with the treatment of effluents from mines in the USA. A limestone drain typically comprises a trench filled with crushed limestone rocks surrounded by impervious materials. In the case of anoxic drains, the trench is generally isolated under a geomembrane liner covered with soil. Contaminated mine effluents flow by gravity towards these limestone drains where the passive treatment consists in bringing the carbonates into solution, thus increasing the pH and alkalinity. Factors to be considered in the design are: chemistry of the contaminated mining effluent ([metals, [Al], [sulfates], dissolved oxygen, acidity, pH), desired residence time, nature of the rock, grain size, density, void ratio and mass of the limestone rock used, alkalinity, life span and hydraulic behaviour of the drain. Certain secondary effects (saturation by sulfates, co-precipitation, adsorption) may either be beneficial (lowering the sulphate and metal load) or harmful (armoring the limestone rock and clogging of the drain). This paper gives a brief status report on the available knowledge on the use of limestone drains for passive treatment of mining effluents heavily loaded with metals. Examples given include the old Lorraine mine (Ni-Cu), Témiscamingue, where limestone and dolomite rock drains were installed in 1998 when a cover with capillary barrier effects was placed over the tailings site.

This new generation of digital instruments have embedded microcontrollers that provide highly accurate and reliable measurement of geotechnical behaviour in real world units that can be immediately interpreted. Digital measurements can be transmitted across existing mine-wide wireless communication networks, interfaced directly with infra-red enabled PDA?s or PC?s, and parsed to memory by low-cost data-loggers.
