The Bureau of Mines Helium Field Operations has developed a simple and accurate method for calculating the viscosity of gas mixtures. Only the composition of the mixture and the molecular weights and viscosities of the pure components in the mixture are required. The momentum fraction of a mixture is calculated from the composition. The fluidity is calculated as a quadratic function of the momentum fractions. The efficiency factor for transfer of momentum in collisions between bodies of different masses is derived and used with one empirical constant. The viscosity is the reciprocal of the fluidity. Results of the method are compared with 752 reported viscosities for 40 dilute binary systems at temperatures from -78 to 276.9°C. Using this method the average absolute deviation is 1.29%, the root-mean-square deviation is 1.99%, and the average deviation is -0.84%.

In an address delivered at Atlantic City, N. T., Dec. 5, 1918, M. L. Requa, General Director, Oil Division of the United States Fuel Administration, said: We face a new era with all its uncertainties. We have arrived at the period of reconstruction and are face to face with the problems concerning which we have so often speculated during the past four years. In all this reconstruction work the United States must bear an important part. We are looked upon to lead the way, to blaze the trail and our actions will have a profound influence upon the rest of the world. If we are to succeed, even in part, we must not be ashamed to practise economy; we must not despise the clay of small things; the little savings; we must have the closest cooperation between Government and industry. Just as truly do we need civic awakening. All that we have ever fought for, the liberty of the world, is comprehended in the ballot; and yet how lightly we have held this great privilege! We need, if we are to reap in full the benefits of the past 18 mo., an awakened civic consciousness; a jealous guarding of government; a resolution that we will, each and all, perform to the full the duties imposed upon us by Democracy; that we will perform more completely the obligations resting upon us as citizens. During the war, industry, through sane cooperation and intelligent effort, has accomplished results possible of attainment in no other way. Government and industry have worked hand in hand and pointed the way o to future activities which, if realized, can but be most highly beneficial to all. If Government and industry are to fulfill their respective duties satisfactorily, it is obvious that there should be complete mutual confidence. Industry must not attempt to "put something over"-and Government must treat with industry upon the high plane that has characterized the public utterances of the President during the war. The techniques of particle-size measurement are of particular importance in the manufacture of portland cement. A range of sizes, from a close approximation to Fred C. Bond's "theoretical infinite" (represented by raw material in the quarry) to particles smaller than one micron is represented in the process. Moreover, similar size-reduction operations are performed on both natural and synthetic materials, the former relatively inactive in water and the latter quite reactive. This means that aqueous sedimentation systems for particle-size analysis are applicable only to some of the materials involved in the process. A brief review of the process should be useful to place the measurement techniques described here in perspective. (Fig.l) Raw materials are quarried, crushed and transported to storage at a maximum size usually of a few inches. Typical materials are limestone and clay or shale, with small amounts of other materials used to adjust the plant mix to the concentration of lime, silica, alumina and iron oxide required.

The rate of drilling operations in the West Texas district during 1940 was approximately equal to that of 1939. The total number of wells dillled in the area during the year was 1834, of which 1716 were completed as oil producers, 12 were gas wells and 106 were dry holes. The number of wildcat wells drilled during the year was comparatively small. The drilling of inside locations in proven areas and the drilling of wells for the purpose of extending the productive limits in producing fields constituted the bulk of development during 1940. Gaines County led all other counties in the district in the total number of oil-well completions. The oil production totaled 83,345,381 bbl., the highest figure for any year since proration was begun. The 1940 oil production exceeded the 1939 production by approximately four million barrels. Discoveries While comparatively few new oil-producing areas were discovered during 1940, it appears that the oil production found in simpson lime in the Abell field, pecos County, was an outstanding discovery for the year. This was the second Ordovician discovery in Pecos County. Taubert, McKee & Siemoneit located its discovery well, V. W. Crockett No. 1, set. 4 1/2 H. & T. C. R.R, co, survey in the Imperial area of northwestern Pecos County. The top of pay was encountered at 5270 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5357 ft. in simpson lime, on act. 17, I940. The initial production was 928 bbl. of 43" gravity sweet oil in 11 hr. 23 min., flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing with gas-oil ratio of 783 cu. ft. per barrel. Following the completion of the discovery well, large blocks of land were leased in the area, and several locations were made toward the close of the year. There is every indication that the Abell field will become a major producing field in the West Texas district. There was no pipe-line outlet for the field at the end of the year. Shipley-Silurian field, discovered by the Gulf Oil Corporation, appears to be another major addition to the oil reserves in 1940. The discovery well, Wristen Brothers No. 5, is in sec. 18, block 5, H. & T. C. R.R. Co. survey in Ward County. The well was drilled to a total depth of 9187 ft. and was plugged back to 7075 ft. The Silurian lime section was acidized with 3000 gal., from 6993 to 7075 ft., and on Dec. 5, 1940, the well was completed for initial production of 3040 bbl- of 32.2" gravity oil in 24 hr., flowing through tubing. Todd Deep field, Crockett County, was discovered by the Continental Oil Co. et al. The discovery well, J. S. Todd No. 2, set. 29, block WX1 G.C. & S.F. R.R. Co. survey, was completed on April 3, 1940. The top of pay was encountered at 5623 ft., and the well was bottomed at 5691 ft. for initial production of 1613 bbl. of 40.6' gravity oil flowing naturally through 2-in. tubing. The pay section was found in Strawn lime of Pennsylvanian age. There were six producing wells in the field at the end of the year. This appears to be another major discovery in 1940. Property sales and acquisition are prominent features of today's coal industry. Before selling or buying a site, a company must know the property's economic net worth. Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

The tube bundle system is an integral part of an underground coalmine’s gas monitoring system. The maintenance of these systems is vital to ensure the quality of the data produced. Integrity testing of the tube bundle lines is required monthly, as specified in Standards Australia AS/NZ 2290.3 (1990). The various forms of integrity testing are reviewed, including pressure testing and introduction of a known gas. This paper provides a recommended and standardised methodology for those techniques where none currently exists. A strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats (SWOT) analysis is performed. The parameters considered for the SWOT analysis include resourcing required by the mines, time for the testing to be performed, and quality of the results produced. The suitability of such integrity testing protocols to be used in a mine emergency situation is also evaluated.CITATION:Forrester, L, 2017. This paper deals with the Australian taxation laws, and in particular the income tax laws, as they apply to mineral exploration and development both in Australia and off-shore. The Australian tax laws are imposed principally at a Commonwealth level. The most important Commonwealth taxes are Income Tax, including Capital Gains Tax, Fringe Benefits Tax, Sales Tax, Customs Duty, Excise Duty and Bank Accounts Debits Tax. The States of Australia impose Stamp Duties and Financial Duties, Payroll Tax and Land Tax. The Australian Income Tax Law including Capital Gains Tax, is the most significant tax in the country. The principal features of the income tax law are as follows: tax is imposed on a taxable income being the assessable income less allowable deductions; a full imputation system of company tax applies; a foreign tax credit system applies to both companies and individuals; capital gains are taxed as income and subject to income tax rates but the gain is inflation adjusted. Australia has negotiated tax treaties with most of its trading partners based on the OECD model; and special tax concessions apply to the mining industry.

IN a recent paper by Servi and Grant,' it was illustrated that the slip band spacing and stress based on creep test data were related by the equation: d =1/ where d is the spacing in millimeters and v is the stress in psi, based on a more complete equation proposed by Orowan. It was shown further,' that for a. given grain size, the slip band spacing became larger with decreasing stress (and was independent of temperature), until such time that the slip band spacing becomes greater than about one-half the grain diam- eter. When this occurred, the mechanism of deformation in creep of 2s aluminum at high temperature changed from slip to grain boundary deformation (sliding). Additional metallographic evidence is now available which confirms this in a most interesting fashion.

The fact that coal is a complex organic material and heterogeneous in composition has made its study extremely difficult, particularly in regard to obtaining a fundamental concept of the processes involved in the formation of coke. It has been stated1 recently that coals are natural polymers and that in a complex reaction such as occurs during carbonization the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. Such being the case, it would be expected, therefore, that a series of coals subjected to exactly the same conditions of coking would produce results that should be related quantitatively to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. In the past, however, this fact was not generally recognized and consequently many empirical test methods were devised for testing coals. The interpretation of the results obtained depended upon comparing a set of data with other data on coals of known characteristics. The testing procedure had to be conducted in precisely the same manner each time and not the least requirement in making the interpretation was experience. The test methods varied from those utilizing a gram of coal to the plant-scale tests in which one or more ovens were charged with the test coal. The aim had been principally to find some simple, inexpensive means by which the coke-making and other properties of coal could be predicted. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of these endeavors, for anyone acquainted with the problems involved in the selection of coals for making coke is well aware of the time and expense involved in making a series of definitive tests. Several attempts have been made to derive formulas for such predictions. The relations of both ultimate and proximate analyses to coke physical properties and byproduct yields have been studied. Lowry and co-workers1 correlated statistically the U. S. Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association assay test results with coal analyses, using 90 coals and coal blends. Parry,² Spooner,3 and Gabinskii and Krym4 made similar correlations. Lowry concluded that there were definite relationships between the proximate analyses of the coals and the yields and properties of the products. Although this statistical study was made on test results from carbonizing coal in a cylindrical steel retort, the conclusions are important and provided one of the first steps in the simplification of this complex subject. Studies should be made of other references on this subject just cited. Studies of the coking process reported in the literature frequently were confined to a small number of coals, and very few have included coals from various ranks. It would seem logical, however, that a program for studying factors involved in the formation of coke should be based on a number of coals selected from each of the various classes or types of coking coal. Vein swarms in metamorphic terranes such as the Otago Schist Belt, New Zealand provide evidence of past hydrothermal flow systems leading to fault initiation and reactivation. A major episode of hydrofracturing and fluid redistribution occurred during early Cretaceous exhumation of the schist belt. As a result, presently exposed lower greenschist facies greyschists in NW Otago are pervaded by abundant quartz-filled hydraulic extension fractures with associated normal faults hosting quartz¦scheelite¦gold mineralisation. Once the effects of Cenozoic folding have been removed, a regional subhorizontal schist foliation contains an aligned array of subvertical hydrofractures striking NNW, striking parallel to a set of low-slip conjugate normal faults; the array extends over an area >1500 km2 and over a depth interval >5 km. The hydrofracture array comprises a mesh of interlinked extensional-shear and pure extension veins. These veins show mutually cross-cutting relations. An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The longtime rule-of-thumb for conveyors was that only one cleaner was needed to solve carryback problems and help keep belt replacement costs under control. That is now being rethought. Belt-cleaning systems manufacturers, designers, and users are shifting to the view that multiple cleaners, placed at key locations on the conveyor and properly maintained, are necessary to solve today's material build-up (carryback) problems. There are still not many statistics on conveyor belt cleaning. But some recent studies support this belief. One study contends that the plant maintenance engineer's biggest problem is keeping the conveyor system running efficiently. The study also said the conveyor itself is responsible for most plant shutdowns. An unscheduled conveyor shutdown can cost more than $100,000/hr and run into millions in lost production in a given year. Other studies pointed out that belt replacement is the greatest single cost of the conveyor system. These studies allude to an important fact: cleaner belts lead to reliability and longer belt life. They showed that a critical relationship exists between characteristics of material being moved and the design of all major conveyor components. In practically all situations this relationship is keyed to belt cleaners, which have long been considered "add-ons" or "accessories." At the Fifth International Coal Utilization Exhibition and Conference, the Sammis Station-Ohio Edison Co. said it installed four belt cleaners on each problem belt. The company found that under certain conditions, when the coal is wet and sticky, carryback can be so heavy that it will flow over two cleaners. Before installing the cleaners, it was necessary to schedule a cleanup crew of four men each day and rent a large vacuum truck for an eight-hour shift. In addition, the company dredged the harbor three times a year, to remove coal spillage. Once the cleaners became operational, however, cleanup costs were reduced to a few days labor every third month. Renting the vacuum truck crew was also eliminated, and harbor dredging became necessary only once each year. In addition, the Mechanical Handling Engineers' Association (MHEA) in London pointed out that standards for cleaners are sorely lacking in the industry. MHEA called for instituting such standards in the future. They also reaffirm using multiple belt cleaners for increased efficiency. MHEA pointed out that some conveyor belts can be cleaned by one device, provided that it is correctly installed and adequately maintained. But MHEA recommended that a system approach be adopted, since this has proved more effective in practice. There are two main reasons why one belt cleaner fails to solve most carryback problems. First, management often reasons that the design of the current cleaner has probably been around for years, so it "must be good." This logic leads to a continued investment in keeping the current model operating, which includes pouring substantial sums of money in "housekeeping" manpower hours because the cleaner does not clean. Second, most single-belt cleaners are specified too late in the design process (indeed, some after the system is operational). This complicates matters since cleaning efficiency is directly proportional to when they are specified: the later the specification, the less efficiency. Cleaning equipment should be taken into consideration before the conveyor's structure is designed and fabricated. Otherwise the space available to install adequate cleaning equipment at the head pulley may be inadequate. Instead of matching conveyor with proper cleaner (as would occur during the design of the conveyor itself), designing a cleaning system "after-the-fact" becomes a matter of matching cleaner to conveyor. This limits choices in cleaners and, therefore, overall cleaning effectiveness. This is why after-the-fact designs of single belt cleaners are costly and rarely successful. While it is always best to specify belt cleaners during early design stages, the multiple-cleaner systems approach makes the timing of cleaner installation less critical. Because of flexible mounting hardware, a well-designed system can lead to 99% efficiency in cleaning and put an end to carryback even after a system is operational. THE first discovery of lead and zinc ore on Calumet island was made in 1893 by John Lawn, who then staked a portion of the property now owned by Calumet Mines, Limited. His discovery was developed by James and Calvin Russell, who are said to have shipped a few tons of sorted ore, averaging 39 per cent zinc, 13 per cent lead, and 11 oz. silver per ton. In 1898, the property was being operated by the Grand Calumet Mining Company, who mined and shipped, for treatment in a Belgian smelter, 1,100 tons of ore averaging 32 per cent zinc, 9 per cent lead, and an unreported content of gold and silver. After some indecisive exploration by an American syndicate in 1907, the property lay idle until1910, when the Calumet Metals Company-later reorganized as the Calumet Zinc and Lead Company-re-commenced exploration. After sinking an 85-foot shaft-the McDonald shaft-and doing a few hundred feet of drifting and cross-cutting, this Company, in 1912, erected a 150-ton daily capacity gravity-concentration plant, in which some 800 tons of ore, mined from the McDonald shaft and Bowie pit, were milled. Owing to very disappointing mill recoveries, the property was shut clown and-after several years of idleness-in? 1916 the mill and mining plant were destroyed by fire and the Company went into bankruptcy. In 1918, an unknown operator shipped to an Omaha, Nebraska, smelter 22 tons of ore, probably sorted from the dumps of the Ste. Anne shaft and Galena pits, averaging 44 percent lead, and 0.26 oz. gold and 61 oz. silver per ton. The British Metals Corporation (Canada), Limited, in 1926, optioned the property. They unwatered the McDonald shaft and, after doing an additional 300 feet of cross-cutting and drifting on the 85-ft. level, estimated there were some 33,000 tons of ore between this level and the surface. Surface exploration, including trenching, on other showings on the property gave discouraging results and the option was dropped.

For mining and exploration, and indeed the entire mineral industry, the first century of AIME has ended with far more problems than it began. Paradoxically, most of these problems have arisen not because, the industry has been unsuccessful, but rather because it has succeeded too well. Whatever the public demand for minerals over the past 100 years, it has somehow been met-and met at a price well within the public's ability to pay for the products. But as AIME moves into its second century, the past successes of mining and exploration are beginning to levy a tax on the future. Prospectors have already found most of the rich and ready ores, and miners have dug them out. New mineral assets grow progressively harder to come by, and as they do, the need for them grows inversely more pressing. How and where and at what cost can adequate supplies be found? How and at what cost can they be mined from heretofore inaccessible recesses deep underground and under the seas-or from vast surface tonnages containing only minor values? And once they are found or won, how can these assets be husbanded for generations to come? How also can they be extracted without injury to the land, air and water on which we and our successors must depend? And what constructive use can be made of the incidental materials now treated merely as wastes-sometimes at great expense?

It has been generally concede by those who have learned to value the life and limbs of their employees, that safety is essential to efficiency and no company that has a high accident rate can be considered an efficient organization. Accidents have a destructive effect on the morale of any body of workers and cause disorganization and delays.The increasing danger to life and limb involved in the drilling for and the production of oil and gas, has become so great that it is clearly evident that everything possible must be done to keep it within the narrowest possible limits.There is a tendency toward carelessness, especially by men who are employed in hazardous occupations. This is brought about by the familiarity of the risk under which they are working and in no industry is this more forcibly exemplified than in the oil fields. Men have performed the same or similar duties for many years and have worked around similar hazards and unprotected machinery until many have can entire disregard for the dangers surrounding then. Very often familiarity with a hazard occasions a contempt for that hazard which only too often results disastrously."

Deep-hole blasting operations in opencast mines are always associated with some annoyance to the surrounding areas in terms of ground vibration, noise, flyrock, etc. These become more severe when underground mines run parallel to them. Blasting in opencast mines may pose danger to the underground mines in terms of roof/side failures, damage of water dams, isolation/ventilation stoppings and other underground installations. The paper discusses a case study in India on the impact of deep-hole blasting in Ramagundam Opencast Project ? III on the stability of various water dams of GDK-6B Incline coal mine operating in close proximity. The stability of underground water dams of GDK-6B Incline mine was endangered due to deep-hole blasting at OCP-III. There were 15 water dams in seam 3 and 16 dams in seam 4 of the underground mine. The physical strength tests using a Schmidt Hammer instrument were carried out in all the 15 water dams of No. 3 seam and 16 water dams of No. 4 seam. The test revealed that there is a decrease in compressive strength values of three dams of seam 3, namely 6A, 6B and 7. Theose three dams were also directly connected to the water source. Water seepage was also observed from the surfaces of the three dams. However, they were found to be stable in accordance with their design parameters and damage point of view while considering a threshold value of ground vibration as 25 mm/s. It was found that the value of tensile stress generated by a vibration of 25 mm/s was much lower (i.e. 0.171N/mm2) than the tensile strength of the two weakest concrete dams (1.85 N/mm2). Ten experimental blasts were conducted at different working benches of the opencast mine and the ground vibration data were recorded in roof and pillars near various underground water dams. The maximum value of vibration data recorded was 5.9 mm/s in roof near dam no. 1 in seam 3 with the dominant peak frequency of 22 Hz. No adverse effect on either of the dams was observed after that blast. During the period of study, no deterioration/adverse impact was found in any dam of the mine. Based on the results of the study and the analyses of the data, optimized blast design parameters and explosives weight per delay were suggested for the opencast mine to maintain the safety of the underground water dams. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical separation process that takes place in two phases; pulp and froth phase. It is widely recognised as a complex process, due to the range of interactions present within the system. Of critical importance is the role of the froth phase within the system. The pulp kinetics governs the maximum potential recovery within a flotation cell, while the froth phase governs the selectivity via the froth?s stability. Higher froth stability improves recovery at the expense of grade, and lower froth stability improves selectivity. It is well known that the two major factors affecting froth stability are attached particles and solution chemistry. This paper looks at a flotation bank at different froth depth and frother concentrations. The air recovery to the concentrate is determined at each condition and relates the effect of the operating conditions on froth stability and transport to the amount of solids that are recovered to the froth and concentrate by true flotation. The results presented show that, for a given process objective, which in this case was a consistent mass pull profile, depending on the operating conditions, solids recovery in the pulp is affected by the air rate required to maintain the target mass pull. To a smaller extent, the changes in the pulp composition affect down-stream pulp recovery. The variation in solids recovered into the froth drives the froth stability at the start of the flotation bank, while the frother drives the froth stability at the end of the bank.
