For more than 80 years the Bessemer process has depended upon the ability, skill, and judgment of the blower, although as early as the I860's it was recognized that the process would benefit by some type of instrumental contro1.l IIowever, instruments with sufficient recording speeds did not exist, so the end-point determination was always dependent upon the blower's eye. This placed an obstacle in the way of precise experimental work, because of the absence of the necessary records and reference points as reported by Work.2 The use of the photocell provided the instantaneous record of the blow that made this experimental work possible and provided more scientific control for the process as discussed by Graham,3 A brief description of the progress of the blow will illustrate the recording function of the instrument. The silicon in the iron is being oxidized during the first minutes of the blow, as pointed out by Henning4 in a table showing the order of metalloid elimination. The product of this oxidation is a solid that remains in the converter, so there is virtually no flame during this part of the blow. This low flame luminosity is illustrated by the flame recording shown in Fig. I, where the silicon blow is plainly marked. The dull flame of the silicon blow gradually gives way to the brilliant carbon flame as the increasing quantities of carbon monoxide formed inside the converter burn to dioxide upon contact with the atmosphere above the vessel. When the carbon reaches some low value under 0.20 per cent, there is insufficient menoxide formed to maintain the dioxide flame, so its intensity drops. Throughout the flame drop carbon continues to burn, until at some value around 0.05 per cent an arrest occurs in the recorded drop. This point has been designated as the end point. The period of time from this end point until the vessel is turned upon its side and blowing has stopped has been called the afterblow. This afterblow is used as a measure of the degree of metal oxidation, and uniformity demands that it be controlled within narrow limits. Iron and blowing conditions are likely to change several times during a turn, necessitating corresponding changes in end-point control. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these changes, the factors that make them necessary, and their bearing upon the quality of steel. Carbon-FeO Relationship In the Bessemer process oxidation relationships are precise. Fig. 2 shows a graph of the carbon-FeO relationship. The familiar "bomb-test" method, described by Mccutcheon and Rautio,5 was used for obtaining these and all other dissolved FeO values herein reported, all tests being taken from the converter before deoxidation unless otherwise noted. All tests of 0.10 per. cent carbon and above were obtained from metal blown for duplexing. McGinley and Woodworth6 reported iron oxide values for blown metal, but their tests were obtained by a . different method than were those

INTRODUCTION The high speed rail link between Madrid and Asturias, in the North of Spain, has encountered in the Cantabrian range the biggest challenge of the whole line, a very deep tunnel, 25 km long through a foreseen difficult geology. This tunnel was divided in the following four lots for construction: ¦Lot 1: Pola de Gordón- Folledo. L=10,7 km ¦Lot 2: Folledo-Viadangos. L=4,166 m ¦Lot 3: Viadangos- Los Pontones. East tube. L=10,4 km ¦Lot 4: Viadangos- Los Pontones. West tube. L=10,4 km. Dragados S.A. leading a JV was contracted to design and built the Lot 2 on the captioned Pajares High Speed Railway Tunnel. The Lot 2, comprising the middle third section of the 25 km long tunnel has an additional challenge: the construction of one access from the surface to allow it own construction. Feasibility reports and preliminary design do not foresee the use of TBM due to the risk of squeezing ground at the deepest area of the tunnel. On the other hand, conventional NATM excavation of the twin tunnels and ancillary works, including access shafts were against the expected construction schedule by the client, due to the poor ground foresee at the early stage.

The orebodies of Gibraltar Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) are located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, central British Columbia. The area in and around Gibraltar Mines has a moderate topographic relief with elevations between 3500 and 4100 ft. The property is 95% covered by overburden which varies in depth from a few feet to 230 ft. Early History and Geology The present Gibraltar Mines property before amalgamation consisted of the Pollyanna property (Duval-Canex) and the Gibraltar property (original Gibraltar Mines) as well as some Coast Silver and McLeese Lake Copper claims.

The fall of small pieces of rock between roof bolts causes over 80 pct of the ground fall injuries in underground coal mines. Roof screen, if installed on the bolting cycle, can significantly reduce the number of these injuries. As the surface of the roof fails, the screen will have to retain the broken rock without failing or excessive deformation. Welded wire screen is the most common type of screen material used for roof surface control in underground coal mines. The load-deformation characteristics and the load capacity of welded wire screen were evaluated in the laboratory in a specially built test frame. In the frame, the square screen sections were held in place by bolts and bearing plates at the four corners while a center load was applied to the screen. The parameters evaluated included the wire gauge and configuration, the bearing plate loads and bolt spacing. The wire gauge of the tested screen was 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10. Maximum screen capacities for both load and displacement were developed for each of the wire gauge sizes along with the screen stiffness. This information can be used for screen selection and for the evaluation and determination of screen performance. The Tapping Camera Prototype (TCP) is an instrument being developed to record and analyse video of the molten metal stream entering a tapping crucible as it is tapped from an aluminium reduction cell. The development aims to provide potroom floor operators with continuous real time vision of the tapping process and provide an alert in the event of excessive bath contamination in the extracted metal stream. Longer term the system may provide sufficient data to enable control of the tapping process. The TCP mounts a wireless camera and periscope to view the molten metal stream via a peephole in the tapping crucible. Real time video is recorded to either digital video tape or computer disk for subsequent video analysis to quantify the bath material drawn into the tapping crucible with the molten aluminium. The images transmitted by the camera are available on a handheld LCD video screen. This work is an initiative of the CSIRO?s Light Metals Flagship.

Structured liner materials are available for double lined and final cover systems and are revolutionizing the way ponds, pads and final closures are constructed. This paper will discuss the structured or embossed geomembrane concept and manufacturing process. Additionally, the paper will present comparative testing illustrating the major advantages of using this type of product in these types of applications. Both technical and economic advantages are illustrated. The cost savings include lower installation costs, less material used, and third party inspection times not to mention better performance. These new systems will be presented.

In this paper, a number of novel hypotheses that provide a fresh perspective on the characterization of strata movements associated with longwall mining are developed by analyzing subsidence measurements with an influence- function-based computer program. With this influence-function technique, easily obtained surface displacements can be used to determine some of the complicated, expensive, and difficult to measure movements of the immediate roof strata in a longwall panel. The primary hypothesis developed by this analysis proposes the existence of an area of partial roof caving near the edge of a panel called the "edge effect." A second hypothesis, interrelated with the first, promotes the importance of the effect of gate-entry closure on the observed strata movements. Both the primary edge effect hypothesis and the secondary hypothesis concerning gate-entry closure are justified and quantified in an extensive analysis of surface subsidence that uses supporting information from related theories, design criteria and insitu measurements. Next, the edge effect and the gate closure hypotheses are extended further and used to provide an explanation of the complex subsidence interaction of adjacent longwall panels in what is termed a "redisturbed" effect. Finally, in the conclusions of this paper, the importance of accurately understanding these longwall strata movements for proper subsidence prediction or gate design is stressed.

Fifty years ago, the belief that "fillers" were added to paints for the sole purpose of diluting and cheapening the pigment may have been justified; but paint technology has made tremendous progress since that time, and today both the manufacturer and the consumer know that the judicious use of fillers may add desirable properties to a paint that cannot be introduced in any other way. A growing respect for these accessory materials has led to the use of the more euphemistic term "extender." The names "extender" and "filler" are to a considerable degree synonymous. The newer term, "extender," is adopted in this paper, though it is actually no more descriptive than the older name. Stewart's3/ definition of extender is: "A cheap pigment, usually of an inert type, used to extend or increase the bulk of a paint, thus reducing its unit cost. Extenders are also used to adjust the consistency of a paint and to let down colored pigments of great tinting strength. The use of an extender in a paint does not necessarily mean the resultant product will be inferior. In fact, extenders sometimes, improve -certain characteristics of a film." All extenders are not cheap, as, for example, wet-ground mica and diatomite. Research in the, use of extenders (also sometimes called "inerts") has been one of the host active branches of study in the paint field; and many thousands of dollars have been spent in establishing the physical and chemical characteristics required of various natural mineral extenders for numerous paint formulas

I have availed myself of the opportunity to prepare, and to give this talk because, as incumbent Chairman, I am directed by the Bylaws of the Council of Education to make an Annual Report of the Council activities which have transpired during the past year. In addition, and inasmuch as I have this captive audience, I am taking the liberty to express also some beliefs I hold about various other elements of Mineral Industry education. First, my report is that constructive progress has been achieved in the Council of Education during 1960-61. These advancements have been particularly notable through projects carried on by the Committee on Meetings and Programs, by the Student Chapters Committee, by the Accrediting Affairs Committee and by the Committee for Securing Better Representation of Mineral Industry Colleges. I believe each of these groups will report concerning details of their respective programs at the Business Meeting of the Council. On the other hand, not as much has been done in some areas of work as I had hoped would be the case when I took office as Chairman last February. Let me make clear that these delinquencies, for the most part, have resulted through my ineptness in handling of affairs; they are not caused by the failure to perform various assignments which I have given to council members.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on the changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by controlling contaminant ion effects and discusses selected innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role in iron control. One change to control contaminant ions is size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy species). Plant examples illustrate the successes, and indicate that there are several options available. The general innovations consider the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics from images. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations adapt geostatistics to model variations in ore flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorously apply the statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows that significant improvements to reduce the iron content of concentrates can be achieved by applying these basic principles.

"Organic smoothing additives are used to produce dense, thick, high-quality cathodes in copper electrowinning. Glue had been used traditionally and is still used in operations that do not employ solvent extraction to produce the electrowinning electrolyte. With the advent of solvent extraction–electrowinning, guar started to be used and remained in use for many years as it does not affect the phase disengagement in solvent extraction. Recently, however, guar has been replaced by less-expensive saccharide- and polyacrylamide-based additives. This paper is the first of a series of four papers that examine saccharides and polyacrylamides as new additives for copper electrowinning. A review of previous research related to copper electrowinning additives is presented here, along with a selected review of additives in other copper electrodeposition systems.IntroductionThe recovery of copper from solution by electrowinning was first practiced in the early 1900s, but it was the combination of solvent extraction with electrowinning (SX-EW) in March 1968 at the Ranchers Bluebird Mine (Kordosky, 1992) that changed the landscape for the electrowinning process. Most copper electrowinning capacity is now associated with solvent extraction, though some copper is still won directly from leach solutions (Robinson et al., 2013). The ability to produce high-purity copper cathodes from SX-EW has taken the continued improvement of SX-EW technology over the past more than 40 years.One of the technologies that has seen improvement is that of the organic smoothing agents used during the electrodeposition of copper in the tankhouse. These organic additives are added to the acidic copper sulfate electrolyte during electrowinning to improve the smoothness, brightness and density of the copper cathodes. The organic additives that are presently in use are different from those used in 1999 (Jenkins et al., 1999). Over the past decade, many tankhouses have replaced the use of guar-based organic additives with those derived from other saccharides. Until now, there has been no comprehensive publication in the open literature on the behavior of these additives during copper electrowinning."

THE life of refractory linings in rotary cement kilns can be shortened by uneven or inadequate support of the kiln and its shell and by variations in the conditions of operation. Alteration of these factors may, according to their nature, bring about mechanical deterioration of the lining or promote chemical attack. Chemical attack has been described elsewhere.1-4 The distortion of cement kilns has been discussed in a general manner by Rochow,6 ho indicates the amount of distortion which may occur in an unlined shell, and by Rosenblad: who states that the deformations of the shell are greatest above the trunnions. The present article indicates the extent of the distortion of a kiln to an oval shape in certain selected positions and the deviation from a straight line of the kiln along its length between two supports. The cement kiln is a long, hollow, rotating cylinder consisting of steel plates which may be either welded or riveted together. This shell is supported on tires, frequently 60 ft apart, which roll on trunnions. The large mass of the kiln causes distortion of its cross-section; it becomes slightly oval, i.e., diameters lengthen as they become horizontal and shorten as they become vertical. There is also a tendency for the shell to bow between supporting tires; this bowing may be upwards or downwards depending on the position of the weight forces and the supports. The extent of the deviations from the ideal kiln shape was investigated. Observations described in this paper were made on the shell of the clinkering zone between the first and second tires of two of the kilns at the Geelong works of Australian Portland Cement Pty. Ltd. The kilns were both 400 ft long and 10 ft diam with a welded enlarged burning zone 11 ft 6 in. diam. The shell was fabricated from mild steel and in this section its thickness was 1 in. It was lined with 41/2 in. of chemically bonded magnesite-chrome bricks which were jointed with mild steel plates. The kilns operate on a 4 pct slope and the speed may be varied between 0.75 and 1.68 rpm. The wet process is used; kilns are coal fired and are fitted with integral coolers. Temperatures within the kiln are difficult to determine with any accuracy because of the absence of black body conditions, but surface temperatures are probably in the range 1420° to 1470°C. Average shell .temperatures at the two positions at which the deformation studies were made were 370°C and 355"C respectively. Methods: In determining the ellipticity it was necessary to measure the lengths of the vertical and horizontal diameters while the kiln was in operation; data obtained from a stationary kiln would not have the same practical significance. For this purpose the four points V, W, X, and Y at the ends of two mutually perpendicular diameters were marked on one kiln. The point X is shown in Fig. 1. For the measurement of the length of the vertical diameter a vertical column, to which a horizontally aligned telescope was attached, was placed 10 ft from the kiln. Operators depend upon the success of backfilling programs to ensure that mine activities run continuously (Archibald et al, 1993) where backfilling is an integral part of the mining cycle. In order to ensure that the backfill is prepared and delivered to the stope possessing the required engineering properties, as designed, and that the backfilling process is safe, mine operators at all stages of the backfilling system must be adequately trained for their tasks and be aware of how their work affects other backfilling stages, both up- and down-stream of their station. Mine operator training is primarily based on learning on-the-job from experienced supervisors or training personnel. Classroom training and the availability of reference manuals are less common. While in use by many industries for some time now, computer-based training (CBT) is becoming more readily accepted by the mining industry for a wide variety of training. It is not intended to replace on-the-job training, but to augment it. CBT offers many advantages to enhance operator learning by utilizing multimedia presentations, interactions and on-line testing to teach complex concepts and relationships. Discussions with many operations revealed that there is an industry need for a backfill guide for frontline operator training and as a reference manual for operators and mine engineers. Sponsored by the mining industry and the CIM, "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" has been developed by the Departments of Mining Engineering at Queen's University and McGill University to fulfil this need. "Mine Backfill, An Operator's Guide" is an interactive multimedia package that incorporates high quality colour images, animations, sound, and video with text to review the main backfill methods employed in Canada, including hydraulic/slurry, paste and rock fill. The Guide is divided into training and reference primer sections. When in training mode, the operator is guided through a presentation of common mining and backfill practices and technologies so that he/she may become more familiar with different aspects of backfill processes. To ensure that key concepts have been learned during training, the operator will be tested after each section using a series of multiple choice and true/false questions. When in reference mode, alternatively, the operator may browse through the information in a more detailed and independent fashion through a series of interactive menus. The Guide focuses on the following main topics: resources, surface preparation, distribution, stope activities, health and safety, and quality control. Special features included in the Operator's Guide are a Buyer's Guide, a Trouble Shooting Guide, and an interactive glossary of backfill and mining terms. Concepts in interactive and computer-based learning are also reviewed in this paper.

The Amazon region offers a large potential for gold extraction but its peculiar characteristics such as heavy rains, lacking of roads and general infra-structure, nature of the ore deposits, etc.. do require special care in plant design. REMETÁLICA has developed a know-how is designing leaching plants which have been demonstrated to be profitable under those tropical weather conditions. The solutions adopted are related to general process route, leach liquor distribution and flow pattern, conditioning of solids and effluent treatment. These plants, now operating in South America countries, demonstrate the success for the technology developed. A tipical plant with 800 t/day ore processing capacity, may require an investment of US$ 1.200.000,00, arid have? a pay back period of a few months, depending on ore grade.

"Abstract -Yidun Island Arc in Sanjiang Region is one of the important Kuroko-type volcano­ genic massive sulfide deposits (VMS) districts in southwestern China. Tectonically, the region is situated in the eastern portion of the Tethys orogenic belt, and is a late Triassic extensional island-arc. The island-arc underwent earlier arc construction, intra-arc rifting, later arc construction and back­ arc spreading during its evolution and formed a complete trench-arc-basin system, i.e., the Ganzi­ Litang suture zone, forearc basin, outer arc, intra-arc rifting zone, inner arc and back-arc basin from east to west across the island-arc.Kuroko-type VMS deposits and occurrences discovered so far are limited to within the intra-arc rifting zone of the Yidun Island Arc and tend to occur in groups or clusters distributed in separate fault­ bound basins; e.g., Zengke, Gacun and Xiangcheng basins, in which submarine volcanic rocks, especially bimodal volcanic suites, were extensively developed. The VMS deposits formed in the waning stages of volcanic eruption in the late Triassic and are hosted in the uppermost section of acidic volcanic rocks (rhyolitic-dacitic) within a bimodal suite. The orebodies are associated with these host rocks: rhyolitic-dacitic pyroclastic rocks and exhalites and chemical sedimentary rocks.Ali VMS deposits in Sanjiang are of the Zn-Pb-Cu type. The architecture of the deposits is two­fold, consisting of concordant lenses and layers of massive sulfides and an underlying discordant stockwork. Ali deposits show metal zoning. The hydrothermal alteration related to mineralization is strong and asyrnmetrical, and is found dominantly within the stockwork zone and host rocks surrounding the ores. There are two alteration patterns: (1) chloritization - sericitization - silicification from outer sides to core of the alteration pipe; and (2) silicification + sericitization - silicification + carbonate from the lower to upper part of the alteration pipe_The mineralization temperatures of ore-forming fluids vary in the range 200°C to 335°C. Thermal evolution of the fluids displays temperature profiles that first increase and then decrease with progression of mineralization processes. The majority of black-ore minerais (Groups I and II) formed during intensifying stages of hydrothermal activity, and the majority of serni-yellow-ore minerals (Group III) formed during a thermal maximum . There followed the formation of fine-grained black-ore minerals (Group IV), which interacted with barite layers during decreasing temperature phases.Oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies show that the sources of ore-forming fluids for the Kuroko­ type VMS deposits are two-fold: seawater and magmatic hydrothermal solutions, represented by the Kuroko deposits in Japan and Kuroko-type VMS deposits in Sanjiang, respectively. In the latter case the hydrothermal solutions reacted with host rocks and mixed with cold seawater percolating downward, and circulated through volcanic rocks resulting in development of alteration zones and formation of ore minerals in Kuroko-type VMS deposits."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the principles of support-rock interaction, based on structural matrix methods which permit mathematical formulation of the problem and computer solution. The principles are given under two main sections: the first discusses the idealization of the tunnel support structural system for matrix analysis; the latter discusses the analysis procedures necessary for carrying out the solution. A general frame matrix computer program and a medium-size computer should be sufficient for carrying out the procedures involved. The example problem consists of a circular tunnel support which is subjected to a uniformly distributed vertical load, Three wall thickness-radius ratios are studied in combination with four support-rock modulus ratios. This problem illustrates the main procedures of the support-rock interaction analysis involved, and examination of the results reveals the influence of the relative rigidities of the support and the rock.

The productive capacity of natural gasoline and cycling plants in the United States or. January 1, 1954, was 926 thousand barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines biennial survey. This represented an increase of 114 thousand barrels per day during the 2-year period since the last survey. In the previous 2-year period, capacity had increased 164 thousand barrels per day. The total number of plants increased from 521 on January 1, 1952, to 535 on January 1, 1954. The number of operating plants increased from 506 to 521. The major increases in capacity took place in Texas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico, with the absorption-type plant continuing to account for most of the new construction. In 1954, however, 6 plants reported using a refrigeration process whereas only 1 plant reported this in 1952. The number of operating compression-type plants continued to decline and combination plants showed a decline this year because a number of these plants were reclassified as absorption-type.

THE Lake Shore mine has been developed by two vertical shafts, with level intervals at 200 feet to the 2200 level and at 125 feet below this horizon. A main cross-cut joins the two shafts on all levels to the bottom of No. 3 shaft, and opening into these cross-cuts are the ore passes and sand passes, which are completed from surface To the 4450 level. In the west part of the mine, additional connections have been made between No. 1 and No. 2 veins, through which the major part of the ore from No. 2 vein west is routed to drifts in No. 1 vein. With the lesser amount of stoping on No. 1 vein, this arrangement permits better haulage to be maintained. The ore passes are driven at 50 degrees from the ends of short cross-cuts off the main ones and are broken through to the levels above at the mouths of the short cross-cuts, to allow for dumping on each level. The passes are controlled at each level by ball-and-chain gates and deliver to crushers and thence to loading pockets, shown in Figure 1. That system is quite flexible in that it is possible to by-pass the crushers at any station and load from either shaft at a number of different pockets. The sand passes are driven from the main cross-cuts at the same inclination as, and parallel to, the ore passes. Each is equipped with a chute and dump hole, so that waste or sand fill may be loaded or dumped at each level. A transfer door, hinged on the bottom, is installed opposite the chute for by-passing fill from one level to the next, and in the closed position protects the opening at the top of the pass. The dump hole situated beside the transfer door is protected by a grizzly with 10-inch spaces. Waste rock may be withdrawn from the system through No. 3 shaft loading pocket at the 2950 level to a waste bin on surface. Levels are developed by drifts in No. 1 and No. 2 veins for their entire lengths.
