United States federal and state regulatory authorities require underground mine operators to adopt adequate measures to minimize material damage to the surface caused by nine subsidence. This paper presents an approach to define and determine the extent of material damage due to subsidence from underground coal mining. The basic steps involved in the development of adequate criteria have been enumerated together with the approaches and methodologies used.

The Ladolam gold deposit on Lihir Island, in Papua New Guinea, is a large disseminated gold deposit hosted by hydrothermal breccias. The deposit occurs in the cupola zone of a 350,000 year old monzonite stock which is emplaced in the collapsed caldera of a shosho- nitic stratovolcano.

Mine drainage contains metals and sulfate, which may be toxic to aquatic life at certain concentrations and should be removed to acceptable levels before release of any drainage to the environment. One method for treating mine drainage is passive treatment, which is increasing in popularity due to lower construction and operating costs. This method is based on the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) respiring on sulfate while using fermentation products from decomposing complex organic materials. The product of this biological process is hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with metals in mine drainage and precipitates them as metal sulfides. However, in practice passive treatment systems are not always effective, reducing the reliability of this approach. In this study, a mixture of hay, cow manure and wood chips was tested in continuous flow experiments for efficacy at sustainable treatment of sulfate and selenium containing water from a mine tailings pond. Factors that contributed to a decline in performance included lowering of the pH due to acids leaching out of the organics, re-oxidation of sulfide back to sulfate and a reduction in dissolved organic compounds over time. In this paper methods are described to overcome these problems so that treatment is made more reliable.

INTRODUCTION Though the use of continuous mining machines consolidated the operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading in one machine that would theoretically provide uninterrupted production, it was soon realized that the face haulage and roof support operations remained as major impediments to continuous production. The ability to provide not only continuous cutting and loading, but also continuous haulage and roof support (see Fig. I), was the basis for the introduction of mechanized longwall systems in this country from Europe in 1951. The early systems employed friction props for roof support, but were to become obsolete shortly after introduction of the first hydraulically powered, self-advancing supports in 1960. Since then, use of the longwall technique has grown to the point where it is currently providing more than 5% of the annual output of underground coal mines in the United States. The shortwall system had its origin in Australia, but was first introduced into this country in 1962 following the development of powered roof supports. It, too, provides for continuous cutting, loading, and roof support (see Fig. 2), but has not experienced the widespread popularity of longwall due to its inherent inability to easily provide for continuous haulage. While there are in the neighborhood of 100 longwall systems currently in operation in this country, there are only a handful of short- wall operations providing production of slightly more than 907 184.7 t/a (1,000,000 stpy). Both of these systems provide uninterrupted roof support for face operations by means of hydraulically powered steel roof supports. In each case, the coal removal consists of open-end cuts made from the narrow end of a large rectangular pillar (panel) which has been blocked out by continuous miners developing entries around its perimeter. The aim of the present work is to present the gas chromatography (GC) as an alternative method of analysis in the thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate. Therefore, a furnace/GC on-line system was employed to study the kinetics of the reaction, measuring the CO2 produced in the decomposition. One of the advantages of the GC method is the possibility to perform an in-situ characterization and quantification of the gaseous products to obtain kinetic parameters, besides the method is simple and shows a good reproducibility. The decomposition of calcium carbonate was carried out in isothermal conditions at temperatures from 655 to 715°C with nitrogen as purge gas. Several gas velocities were used to determine the adequate flow that minimizes the effect of external mass diffusion as rate controlling step. It was made a preliminary analysis of the sample size influence on the reaction rate. The activation energy of the reaction was determined by Flynn method. The value obtained was in a good agreement with other authors. On the other hand, gravimetric measurements were employed for compare GC results.

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

"The fatigue behavior of two high-strength sheet steels used to produce car bodies, a dual-phase steel and a TWIP one, both with ultimate tensile strength close to 1 GPa, is investigated.Unnotched tensile specimens are fatigue tested at room temperature with constant load amplitude and zero load ratio, in order to determine their 1 million cycles fatigue limit, both in the asfabricated sheet condition and after the resistance spot welding of one small homologous sheet square onto the calibrated length of the tensile specimen. Moreover, pre-cracked compact tension specimens are tested with load ratio 0.1 to determine the Paris fatigue crack growth curve.The fatigue results are completed with crystallographic, microstructural, tensile, and fractographic examinations, and the influence of the microstructure and of the welding processes is discussed.IntroductionCar bodies are increasingly made with high-strength weldable steels, in order to reduce vehicles' weight (to save fuel and reduce air pollution) and to improve the vehicle occupant safety in case of car crash. The main mechanical requirements of these steels in service are fracture strength and energy absorption, relevant for crashes, as well as fatigue endurance, relevant for ordinary car usage. [1]Steel sheets for car-body applications are usually made by continuous casting, hot rolling, cold rolling, continuous annealing (or other continuous heat treatment), and protective coating (in some cases). The sheets are then cold formed (deep drawn) to produce car body parts. Finally, the car bodies are built by assembling several deep-drawn parts, often consisting of different steels, usually through the Resistance Spot Welding (RSW) process, whereby two or three overlapping sheets are welded by local Joule-effect heating [2].Dual-Phase (DP) steels are widely used, low alloy steels with a microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite, obtained from a final heat treatment which consists of heating at an intercritical temperature and then quenching. Thermodynamic modeling and experimental study on impurity capacities and their distribution between mattes or metal and slags in smelting, converting and refining of non-ferrous metals was discussed. A brief review on the recent developments in copper smelting and converting is presented. The analysis showed that, copper smelting capacity increased by a factor of 10 since 60's, smelting rate increased by a factor of more than 5 and process fuel equivalent decreased by a factor of 2. A thermodynamic model for prediction of impurities capacities in slags and their distribution in mattes and slags was developed. The impurities capacities (i.e. sulfur and arsenic) of slags were calculated a priori with no adjustable parameters using the Reddy-Blander model. The capacities predictions were made in a wide range of matte and slag compositions, Pso, and temperatures in conditions pertaining to copper and lead industrial slags. The calculated results for sulfide and arsenate capacities are in good agreement with the available experimental and industrial copper and lead industrial slags data. The sulfide and arsenate capacities in copper slags (fayalite, ferrite and olivine) and lead slags are reviewed. The application of RB model predicted ratios of 02 and S2 partial pressures in industrial copper smelting processes are discussed. Application of this model for the prediction of Sb, Bi and other impurity capacities and their distribution ratios in mattes or metal and slags, in industrial smelting and refining processes is discussed.

A spectrographic method for the determination of small amounts of gold and the platinum metals in ores has been developed. By means of this method, an assay of 0.001 ounce per ton on one assay ton samples is possible, and by seecrrographic adjustments the sensitivity may be increased to 0.0001 ounce per ton. All the prec10us metals may be determined from one spectrographic arcing with an accuracy of about 5 per cent average deviation from absolute values, and the complete analysis of an ore or similar product may be reported five or six hours after receipt of sample.

The Institute is represented on the boards of the John Fritz Medal, the Hoover Medal and the Washington Award, in connection with the three national societies of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering; and, also, in the case of the Washington Award, with the Western Society of Engineers. The Institute is represented with these four societies on the committee in charge of the Alfred Noble Prize.

This information circular is one of a series describing mining methods and costs, being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Sunbright mine of the Foote Mineral Co. at Sunbright, Va., is the southernmost underground limestone mine in the State. It is a comparatively recent operation, and a description of its rapid development to production stage may have particular interest for the limestone-mining industry. This paper discusses the design and calibration of a Faraday pail for measuring electric charge. The paper also shows that at least for two minerals, quartz and calcite, the phenomenon that Johnson termed "reversibility" can be explained in terms of the contact electrification between the minerals and the metal rotor of an electrostatic machine. Each year the free world produces about 13 million tons of mineral concentrates by electrical separation. However, despite the rather general acceptance of electrical concentration as an industrial process, research in this area has lagged far behind the efforts devoted to competitive processes such as froth flotation. The purpose of this paper is to describe the design and calibration of a Faraday ice pail for measuring charge density on mineral grains and to show some of its applications in the area of electrostatic and electrodynamic research. THE DESIGN AND CALIBRATION OF FARADAY PAILS FOR ABSOLUTE CHARGE MEASUREMENT The electric charge on mineral grains at a given time during an electrical concentration process is de- pendent on many factors and cannot, in general, be accurately calculated a priori. It is thus important to devise a method of measuring absolute charge. One method of measuring electric charge is to note the potential rise of an electrometer when charged particles drop into a Faraday pail. Two types of Faraday pail have been constructed and calibrated. The first type, Faraday Pail I (Fig. 1), is a vertical pail originally designed to measure the charge due to contact electrification between mineral grains and a metal rotor or due to conductive induction when mineral grains are passed over a rotating cylinder in the presence of an electric field. The second type, labeled Faraday Pail II (Fig. 2), is a horizontal pail designed to determine the charge distribution of mineral grains after they pass through the separating zone of the electrical concentrator shown in Fig. 4. The main advantage of the horizontal pail is its low head-room requirement and the long opening which enables the experimenter to sample the entire width of the stream of minerals being separated. The Faraday pails were calibrated in the following manner: A calibration head was constructed in the form of a hollow brass sphere that could be held in an insulated metal cylinder by vacuum (Fig. 1). The capacitance of the sphere was calculated by measuring the capacitance of the sphere and cylinder combined and that of the cylinder alone and subtracting the latter measurement from the former. The sphere was then charged to a known potential (V) and allowed to drop into the Faraday pail which was attached to a Keithley Model 610A electrometer. An original method is used to obtain stable nanoparticles of gold-based mono- and bimetallic systems supported on an acidic zeolite. This approach has been applied to PtHY (1wt% Pt) and to bimetallic Pt-AuHY containing 1% of platinum to which is added the amount of gold required to give Au/Pt molar ratios of 20,40,60 and 80%. Metal clusters of Au or Pt-AuHY are formed inside the supercages of the zeolite framework by the thermal reduction of cations by the ligands (en = H2N-CH2-CH2-NH2) under inert gas flow at a temperature depending on the metal. The use of acidic zeolites favours the dispersion of the metal and the thermal stability of the particles. This stability is explained by chemical anchoring of metal clusters by the Brønsted sites of the support. Several techniques have proved that for a molar ratio of 20% metal particles of Pt-AuHY are bimetallic. The segregation of Pt and Au starts for molar ratio =?40%. The catalysts tested on the methylcyclopentane hydroconversion reaction reveal that the addition of gold to platinum leads to an increase in the activity and an improvement in the selectivity for isomerization of the skeleton (cyclohexane and benzene) to the detriment of hydrogenolysis. Similar results were obtained for the dodecane isomerisation to isododecane. These catalysts were also tested in CO, propene and propane oxidation. The activity of fresh catalysts is rather low. It increases after their pretreatment in oxygen or hydrogen atmosphere. In propene oxidation in the reaction mixture O2 ? H2, beside total oxidation of propene to CO2, also propene hydrogenation was observed, particularly at low temperatures. The presence of Au enhances the hydrogenation properties: high selectivities (> 90%) to propane and high propane yields on PtAu HY are observed up to ~150oC, whereas for Pt HY catalyst the selectivity and yield to C3H8 decreases rapidly with the temperature beginning from ~100oC.

Peak laboratory strength data obtained from low permeability clay shales/rocks often display a bilinear or non-linear failure envelope. In many of these tests pore pressures are not measured because of issues associated with back-saturation prior to confined compressive loading. In such tests the effective state of stress at failure remains unknown and provides room for speculation. The non-linear shape of the failure envelope may have several reasons including the influence of capillary forces or the tendency of a saturated clay shale to dilate as the confining stress is changed. The former stems from sample preservation, preparation or core unloading effects and represents a partly saturated state (i.e., not representative for the in-situ state); the latter represents the response of a saturated material. This contribution discusses these issues based on a data set obtained from Opalinus Clay specimens, and concludes that without a careful back-saturation processes knowledge of the underpinning reasons for the non-linear failure envelope cannot be obtained.

STANDARD raises at Homestake are 150 ft long. Raises of more than 150 ft, driven with the use of a cage and hoist, are considered long raises- some have been driven more than 900 ft. Long raises have eliminated the need for access drifts on each level when transfer and ventilation raises are driven. These timbered cage raises, 7x9 ft in cross section, include a rock compartment and a combination cage, pipe, and manway compartment. To prevent excessive weight on the timbers, 10x10-in. bearing beams are cemented into hitches cut in the rock at 150-ft intervals. The beams also hold back timber movement caused by daily drawing of rock through the rock compartment.

Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

The geographical and geological situations of the two mineral sand deposits currently being mined by Western Titanium Limited and the mining methods in use are briefly described. Production scheduling involving the ability to vary the proportions of the major minerals produced, together with maintaining a constant feed grade to the wet concentrator has been assuming greater importance to the company in recent years as the relative value of these minerals, due mainly to technological advances and environmental considerations, is subject to significant and rapid change. Manual calculation, even using a programmable calculator, became a trade-off between man hours and data usage. Schedules were updated infrequently and only a fraction of the avail- able data was used. In July 1975 a Data General NOVA 2/10 minicomputer with a 24K word core and three cassette drives was purchased. A suite of programmes was developed using BASIC to assist in production scheduling and these were opera- tional early in 1976.
