In 1953, Dr. N. H. Fisher of the Bureau of Mineral Resources, acting on behalf of the Society of Economic Geologists, which is considering the sponsoring of a uniform system of nomenclature for ore reserves, enquired from the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy whether it had ever considered this subject and particularly whether it had ever set up any standard definitions or specifications with regard to ore reserves.As this had not been done, but was thought to be desirable, the Council of the Institute appointed a Committee consisting of H. H. Dunkin, Associate, Professor of Mining Engineering, University of Melbourne (Convenor), E. A. Rudd, Professor of Economic Geology, University of Adelaide, I. N. Campbell, Chief Geologist of Western Mining Corporation; and the writer to consider and report on this supject.In December 1953, the Committee submitted its first report to the council and this report (reproduced here as an Appendix) was widely circulated among member companies, and engineers, with an invitation to comment on the proposal. A large number of, replies was received and studied.After studying the replies the Committee issued a second report in part as follows:-From these replies we have learned that the suggestions made in the first teport of the Committee are unacceptable to most of those interested, on one or all, of the following grounds;-(a) number of categories,(b) definition of categories;(c) nomenclature.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of the cementation of cadmium, lead, and silver from dilute aqueous solutions. This work is an extension of studies carried out on the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems for which the reaction rate was found to be completely solution phase mass transfer controlled.When the amount of material deposited was greater than 0·2 to 0·4 mg/cm2 there was an apparent enhancement in rate which is attributed to the formation of a roughened deposit. This same phenomenon was observed in the Cu-Zn and Cu-Fe systems. Again, the rate of reaction of each system investigated was found to be solution-phase mass transfer controlled.

THAT the path of brittle fracture in temper brit-tle steel differs from the path in unembrittled steel has been known for some years1 More recently it has been recognized that alloy steels, at least, display two forms of temper brittleness1 which may be called upper-nose and lower-nose. No experimental evidence has been published, however, to show that the two forms can be distinguished by simple inspection of brittle fractures. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the fractured surface of a V-notch Charpy specimen of SAE 3140 steel in which temper brittleness developed during heat treatment in the lower-nose temperature range.' The steel was austenitized 1 hr at 900°, tempered 1 hr at 675", and embrittled 48 hr at 500°C, with water-quenching after each treatment. The temperature of transition from ductile to brittle fracture in the Charpy test was + 2°C (criterion of transition: 100 pet fibrous). The hardness was Re 25; the austenite grain size ASTM 8. This specimen was broken at 150°C in the standard Charpy test and absorbed 6.6 ft-lb; its fracture was rated 0 pet fibrous. Fig. 1 shows that the fracture appeared rough to the naked eye. At the side of the specimen away from the notch (the side which was in compression during the test), the surface as a whole deviated sharply from a plane. DURING an investigation in which the solubility relations of the phases in Muntz metal (60 per cent. copper, 40 per cent. zinc) were under study, certain phenomena that had no immediate connection with the main problem were observed, which were thought sufficiently interesting to study further. Because of lack of time, only a preliminary survey was made of two of these; namely, the cleavage structure developed under certain conditions in a 60:40 brass and abnormal grain growth in this alloy. CLEAVAGE STRUCTURE IN HEAT-TREATED MUNTZ METAL Carpenter noted many years ago that cold-working a brass of the Muntz metal type, which had been quenched previously from within the beta field, results in a partial breakdown of the supersaturated beta solution and the precipitation of the solute (the alpha solution) in the cleavage planes of the beta grains. This manner of rejection of a solute from a metastable solid solution is not peculiar to this particular alloy, for among others, it occurs in the cold-working of certain austenitic steels; for example, the austenitic nickel steels. In these ferrous alloys, cold deformation produces a partial decomposition of the austenite, with the formation of martensitic "needles" and zigzags in the austenitic poly-hedra. It is interesting to note that while the two solid solutions-austenite and quenched Muntz metal- are metastable and in their mode of decomposition behave quite alike when deformed in the cold, the metastability of each results from a different cause; viz., that of the austenite from the fact that it is a supercooled solution (its solvent, gamma iron, at ordinary temperatures is below its normal stable range) whereas the metastability of the quenched Muntz metal is the result of supersaturation.

For the past four years, the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky has conducted a validation study of the CFD Fluent code, by comparing its results against mining-related benchmark experimental data provided by NIOSH?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. This particular study is dedicated to the effect of machine-mounted dust scrubbers on the performance of face ventilation systems using extended-cut mining with a blowing curtain.

I. Introduction The free market cash price of aluminium in the third quarter of 1985 is approximately $1000/tonne, well below the short as well as the long run marginal costs of production. The current disparity between marginal costs and price, as well as the pattern of prices since their high level in 1980, has led many economists to question whether prices are governed by the 'fundamentals'. Prices, some would argue, are the result of speculation; and speculation is irrational, little influenced by the fundamentals of the industry. The object of this paper is first to examine the relation between the fundamentals and price. A number of simple models are formulated and some empirical evidence is given to show that prices are not very different from costs. There are good reasons why costs and prices have fallen since 1980. Second, the connection is drawn between the fundamentals and speculation. To do this the concept of 'rational expectations' is defined and applied to a model of the aluminium industry. Then speculation is introduced into the model and the characteristics of the solution are examined. The object is to discover the new factors that determine prices and the basic change in the nature of the solution that is caused by speculation. 2. Prices and the Simple Supply-Demand Model Consider a simple model of the aluminium industry. Demand, D, is determined by economic activity, A, given exogenously, and inversely by the price, P. Supply, Q, is determined by the inverse of the rnarginal cost curve, and so varies inversely with exogenous factor costs, C, and directly with price. Price is determined by the equality of supply and demand. Given the equilibrium level of demand, price in this model is equal to the rnarginal cost of producing the required level of demand, P = MC (Dl. Algebraically, [ ] How well does this simple model explain the change in prices during the last five years? Table I shows the LME cash price and the estimated marginal cost of producing consumption during the second quarters of 1980 through 1985. The figures in the table show that price and the marginal cost of supplying demand both fell between 1980 and 1982, rose in 1983 and by 1985 had fallen again. Only in 1984 is the direction of change different. And during the 1980 to 1985 period, marginal costs fell by approximately $560/tonne while the LME cash price fell by $678/tonne. There is a correspondence between the fundamentals of cost and price over most of the individual years and the period as a whole.

In April 1932, the Bureau of Mines published Information Circular 6595, entitled "Data in Reference to Installation of Cables in Shafts and Boreholes", in which were described methods followed in various sections of the United States when electrical circuits are taken into mines by means of cables suspended in shafts and boreholes. In view of the present tendency to extend high-tension cables along entries and passageways from the bottom of the shaft, borehole, or other point of entrance to coal mines rather than over the surface, it is deemed that the various methods of installing such cables deserve careful consideration, particularly in mines in which gas and coal dust contribute to explosion hazards. This is especially true of localities where there is an inclination to restrict the extension of 2,300- and 4,000-volt circuits into the mines. Probably it is feared that accidental contact with the cables of such circuits may result in more serious shock than with lower voltages; also, it is possible that new circuits are regarded merely as explosion hazards additional to those already existing, regardless of the manner in which the new circuits may be installed. It is the firm belief of some engineers that the circuits can be installed so that they will not be damaged by wrecks or roof falls, thereby eliminating the hazard of explosion from this source while at the same time making the chance of accidental contact remote if not impossible. Moreover, some believe that fire hazards from direct-current systems can be reduced by keeping motor-generator sets close to load centers. Thus, although the alternating-current circuits would be lengthened, the size and extent of direct-current circuits would be kept to a minimum.

The Smokescope is an instrument recently developed for determining the density of smoke by shade comparison. The instrument is designed so that the smoke is seen adjacent to two shades of gray corresponding to Nos. 2 and 3 on the Ringelmann chart. Data on smoke density are important in the smoke-abatement field. The method that is specified and accepted as standard for smoke-density determination by the majority of city smoke regulations involves comparing the smoke shade with the four shades on the Ringelmann chart as published by the Bureau of Mines.2/ This investigation was made to determine the accuracy and convenience of the Smokescope. It was conducted as a part of the Bureau I s air-pollution work, which includes the study of techniques that will promote smoke abatement. The accuracy of the Smokescope was arbitrarily defined as the difference between the Smokescope determinations and the determinations by the accepted, standard method and was expressed as Smokescope correction. Although the corrections obtained were strictly correct only for the two observers and the Smokescope of the investigation, they indicate what might be expected from any observer who uses a Smokescope with reference shades that duplicate those of the test instrument. The report is devoted largely to the data on Smokescope correction, which were taken from a single stack under controlled smoke conditions. Field work, which was done at various locations with different stacks, is mentioned briefly in connection with the comparison of the convenience of the two methods. The data for estimating Smokescope correction were taken for the three variables that were expected to affect the results, namely, the density of the smoke, the amount of light, and the color of the sky behind the smoke.

To aid industry and Government in planning water developments the Bureau of Mines in 1963 canvassed mineral producers to determine water use in 1962. Water use by the mineral industry comprises only 2 percent of the water withdrawn by industry as a whole. The major water-using mineral industries are natural gas processing, phosphate rock, sand and gravel, and iron ore. Analysis indicated the following conclusions: 1. Total water use and new water intake is dependent on the quantity of material processed and the process water requirements of the particular industry or commodity. 2. Recirculation is dependent on the processing requirements of a particular commodity, the manner in which the water is used, cooling and condensing requirements in certain large industries, the quality of new water intake, and the need to treat new and discharged water. 3. Consumed water is dependent on the quantity of water recirculated, the temperature and humidity in the area, and the proportion of water used for cooling and condensing. 4. A threefold increase in water use by the mineral industry by 1985 is forecast.

Current AG and SAG mill circuits have continued the trend to larger, fewer mills. These large mills place a significant additional load on the discharge systems and it has become imperative that the designs of these mill discharge systems are evaluated carefully to ensure maximum efficiency and have the capacity to be able to handle the increased mill discharge volumes. The current generation of multiphysics modeling tools allow a detailed analysis of AG and SAG mill discharge performance. The combination of Discrete Element Method modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics allows the designer to model in detail all aspects of a mill discharge performance. This includes a detailed description of the build-up of solids and slurry in a mill discharge, the recycle of material back into the mill through the grates, the relative wear rates and the occurrence of overloading at the pinch points. These tools allow intelligent decisions to be made regarding the type of discharge arrangement, pan lifter geometry, and discharge cone design, so as to ensure that the discharge is capable of handling the duties required for a specific installation. This paper details the current state of the art in these modeling tools, and provides an overview of some recent applications.

A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. Few studies have specifically measured and documented the large-scale loading behavior and durability of ventilation stoppings to mining induced movements, particularly from longwalls. Ventilation stoppings are more commonly the concern of ventilation engineers, and ventilation stopping response to ground movement has only been documented in an incidental manner. This paper presents the investigations of underground measurements that have been conducted to determine the loading response of stoppings constructed from lightweight aggregate concrete masonry units (CMU). These investigations have produced some interesting results that may prove beneficial, not only for developing and assessing alternative stopping construction techniques, but also for designing and selecting standard construction methods for use in varying mining conditions. For instance, the interface friction that results from wedging a CMU stopping during construction plays a substantial role in its ability to resist both lateral and vertical loads. Although they are not intended for ground support, the study showed that block stoppings can resist vertical loads of at least 2,700 to 3,000 kN. Asymmetric loading of a stopping may result in localized failure of blocks within a stopping, which, depending on the severity, can be a precursor of impending stopping failure. In addition to measurement results and implications, the paper will also present details of field measurement methods used to assess stopping response. Stopping stiffness and material strength characteristics will also be presented.

"The cost efficiency and high reliability of semi-mobile or combined in-pit crushing-conveying (IPCC) and truck systems, compared to conventional truck-shovel systems alone, make them more attractive for use in modern mining operations. Semi-mobile systems, which are the most common systems in open-pit mining, combine the advantages of both systems such that fewer trucks are required, operating costs are lowered, and the operation is environmentally sound. One major aspect of utilizing this system is determining the location of the in-pit crusher and the timing of relocations. Facility location models are rarely used in the mining sector, but these models may be used for solving the in-pit crusher location problem. To this end, the main parameters affecting the IPCC location in open pit mines are reviewed and examples given of how they are applied to a dynamic location-relocation problem. Subsequently, the model is implemented for Sungun copper mine in Iran and the number and the exact time of relocations of the IPCC units determined. IntroductionNowadays, compared to the last century, metal prices are more volatile, average and cut-off grades have decreased, and stripping ratios increased. From a mining engineering point of view, many ore deposits with simple access and low capital and operating costs have been exhausted. The remaining deposits are located at depth, with no easy access, which requires high initial capital costs (Osanloo, 2012). Mining at great depths and high tonnages is possible only through open pit mining. Today, more than 80% of open pit mines in the world use a shovel-truck system for loading-hauling operations (Osanloo, 2010).With increasing depth, haulage distances increase and the number of loads per truck decreases. As a result, fuel, tyre, and depreciation costs per ton increase. Owing to these factors, open pit mining at great depth (300 to 1000 m) using shovel-truck systems faces some technical and economic problems. In-pit crushing-conveying (IPCC) systems have been known in the mining industry for many decades. The idea was introduced in 1956 in Germany. Today, the cost efficiency and high reliability of IPCC make it more appealing than conventional shovel-truck operation, especially in longer life projects with lengthy transportation distances and high production rates (Koehler, 2003). Since 1956, different aspects of this system have been reviewed by many researchers. Barua and Lanergan (1985) developed a computer program that compares the tonnage aspects of various conveyor layouts. They believed that to maximize the economic benefit of lower haulage costs associated with in-pit conveying, one must first minimize the cost of the flatter slope, which is expressed in terms of additional stripping or tied-up ore. Dos Santos and Stanisic (1987) evaluated the design of a high-angle conveyor at the Majdanpek copper mine. Then, Sturgul (1987) applied GPSS (general purpose simulation system) to find the best location of an in-pit crusher."

The thermal decomposition of zircon concentrates in a non-transferred arc thermal plasma flow reactor was investigated. The plasma torch was operated using argon-helium and argon-nitrogen mixtures as plasma gases. The effect of power, feed rate and zircon particle size was studied. Products were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and chemical analytical techniques. The average size of the product was in the submicron range. Free energy minimization plots were used to predict the behavior of the system under different operating conditions. A kinetic model to describe the different stages of the thermal decomposition process is proposed. The results of this investigation showed a significant segregation process where the zirconia-rich product is collected in the reactor while the silica-rich product is collected in the filter. TEM analysis indicated that silica vapor is condensed on the surface of the zirconia particles.

"Due to the use of outdated mining technology or room and pillar mining process in small coal mines, the coal recovery ratio is only 10% - 25%. In many regions of China: the damage area caused by the small coal mines amounted to nearly one hundred square kilometers. Therefore, special mining techniques must be taken to reclaim the wasted resource in disturbed coal areas. This paper focuses on the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and abandoned gateroad (AG) distribution in in the abandoned area of Cui Jiazhai Coal Mine in northwestern China. On the basis of three-dimensional geological model, FLAC- 3D numerical simulation was employed. The abutment pressure distribution was simulated when the panel face passed through the disturbed areas. The proper angle of the inclined face was analyzed when the panel face passed through the abandoned gateroads. The results show that the head end of the face should be 13-20m ahead of the tail end. The pillars on both sides of abandoned gateroads had not been damaged at the same time, and no large-area stress concentration occurred above the main roof. Therefore, the coal reserves of disturbed areas can be successfully recovered by using underground longwall mining. INTRODUCTIONDuring the 70-90's, there were a lot of small coal mines in China. Due to their disordered mining, most of the small coal mines left a great many abandoned gateroads (defined as AG in this paper) and a large area of damage coal seam. In these type of coalfields, there exist many mining risk issues, including nonuniform stress in the overburden, flooding and hazardous gases accumulated in the gob. So how to lay out a longwall panel and successfully mining under this type of abandoned small mines is a big issue nowadays in China.As mentioned above, longwall panel is being performed in the damaged coal seams in order to increase recovery of coal reserves (Wang, 2009). However, the abandoned geteroads intersect to each other all around the area. So a series of production issues arose while the panel face is passing through these AG. Gang and Gong (2015) analyzed the roof stability and abutment pressure distribution during the face was passing those AG that were parallel and inclined to the faceline. Xie, et al. (2015) proposed the ground control mechanism by passing the AG in top-coal caving longwall mining. He recommended to stop the face advance until the roof is over, using high strength bolts and cable bolts, and grouting consolidation. This paper studies the different mining methods by analyzing the longwall panel layout and AG distribution in damage coal seams. Theoretical analysis and field observation were conducted to determine the overburden movement when the face was advancing under the AG. The pillar between face and parallel AG changes from elastic to plastic and eventually to the residual supporting status. All these three status was combined with the roof structure to establish the theoretical model to calculate the shield support capacity. Numerical modeling was employed to simulate the pillar stability and determine the abutment pressure distribution as the face inclined to the AG during longwall mining."

N Longhole Open Stope at The Zinc Corporation Mine was developed in an area with large and continuous tension cracks. These cracks resulted fran widespread block subsidence into previously mined areas. The practical problems encountered and their solutions are discussed together with an outline of a new method of stope wall support using large diameter dowels installed sub-parallel to the stope wall.

Security and safety due to environmental impact as well as the radiological consequences during the uranium mining operations, tailings management, uranium processing, disposal of waste in conventional landfill sites are matters of great importance. The Uranium National Company (CNU) from Romania is responsible for all aspects belonging to the management of the entire Romanian uranium industry- the uranium ore extraction, transport and processing of uranium ore, concentrates processing, as well as disposal of sterile ore and waste. The paper will presents specific safety problems related to the identification and evaluation of potential environmental risks, as well as possible radiological consequences associated with the disposal of sterile and the uranium processing waste resulting from processing of the uranium ore. Computer codes will be used, such as IAEA INTERTRAN II and RADTRAN 5. It is also to be noted that this paper considers the main results of the scientific research carried out by the main author as CSI (Chief Scientific Investigator) for Romanian Research Contract on NORM concluded with IAEA Vienna.

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute briefly, and by no means in the way of an exhaustive description, to the interesting developments recently made on the east bank of the Hudson River, in the mining of spathic iron ores. The mines to which I refer are those of the Hudson River Spathic Iron Ore Company, situated at Oakhill on Hudson, Columbia County, N. Y., five or six miles from the city of Hudson, and opposite the town of Catskill. The ore occurs in beds, constituting apparently members of the stratified series of rocks on that side of the river, coursing nearly north and south, parallel with the river, and dipping east. The principal outcrops are presented in a range of low hills, about one mile from the river, along the crest, on the western face of which the stratum of spathic ore is more or less exposed. The length of the line in this range, along which, at various openings the ore has been discovered in profitable quantity, is about two miles. To the northward, the hills are somewhat higher, and the stratification may possibly be disturbed, though the rapid examination of the locality which I made in November last did not, include any determination of this
