The main iron ore deposits of Western Australia fall into three very different geological classes, which are, in order of importance: hematite enrichment ore, pisolitic limonite ore, and sedimentary ore. These are presently (1973) being mined in the approximate proportions 20 : 2 : 1, while the equivalent proportions for reserves are, very approximately, 200 : 70 : 1. Two minor categories which mar- ginally qualify as ore are detrital material variously referred to as scree ore or canga, and potentially beneficiable iron formation. These two latter types are dealt with very briefly, and the three main categories are dis- cussed in order of economic significance. Hematite enrichment ore results from the selective replacement of a pre-existing host rock by hematite. Almost without exception, this host is cherty banded iron formation (BIF); but certain exceptions have great genetic inter- est. Ore bodies of this kind occur both in the Archaean BIFs of the Pilbara and Yilgarn Blocks and in the Proterozoic BIFs of'the Hamersley Basin. It follows from their virtual restriction to a single kind of sedimentary host that there is strong stratigraphic control over the shape of ore bodies: these may be almost flat, of dyke-like form, or of complex configuration, according to the pre-enrichment structure of the host bed. En cuanto a los combustibles empleados, no se ha encontrado la adaptabilidad de un quemador que pueda operar simultáneamente con combustibles sólidos, líquidos o gaseosos, aunque es posible adaptarlo al uso de varios tipos de combustibles: carbón bitúminoso, lignito, antracita, así como también petróleo y gas natural. Los calderos usados dividen el horno del caldero en dos secciones, una alta y otra baja. Entre las características de la operación tenemos la resistencia, fuerza auxiliar, molienda del carbón. Finalmente, en el proceso de eliminación del sistema de horno ciclónico, se utilizan los tanques para ceniza fundida dado que operan a presión a fin de no detener el caldero cuando se extrae la ceniza fundida.

This report presents guidelines on methods of dust control in conventional coal mining operations. The normal mining cycle and equipment used in a room and pillar conventional section are described. Main ventilation, section ventilation and face ventilation are discussed in detail. Proper installation of line brattice, maintenance of proper air flows at the face and split ventilation are stressed. The effects of maintaining the end of the line brattice near the face are described. The advantages and disadvantages of blowing and exhausting face ventilation are presented. The use of water sprays on cutter bars and loading machines is described. The design of a nonclogging water spray system developed under a Bureau of Mines contract is presented. Other methods of reducing dust exposure are discussed and include alternative procedures for shot firing and administrative controls.

INTRODUCTION FOR a number of years Russia, India and Brazil have outranked .all other countries as producers of manganese ores. During the 5 years immediately preceding the European war, the average annual production of Russia was 844,000, of India 694,000 and of Brazil 200,000 long tons. Since the outbreak of the war there has been a considerable falling off in the Russian and Indian production, particularly in the former, whereas the production of Brazilian ores has been greatly increased, amounting in 1914 to over 250,000 tons and in 1915 to nearly 350,000, with conditions favorable for a still larger production in 1916. Manganese is one of the few industrially important metals that are not produced in the United States in quantity commensurate with our needs, so that we have been compelled to import annually about 300,000 tons, having a value of over $2,000,000, and these ores have been obtained from the three countries mentioned above. Their rank as contributors to our imports of manganese ores was India, Russia, Brazil; and in 1913, Brazil contributed only one-fifth. During the past 2 years Brazil has furnished rapidly increasing quantities to this country, and, with the falling off of imports from India and Russia, has become our principal foreign source. In 1914, Brazil furnished two-fifths of the imports and more than India or Russia, and in 1915 over nine-tenths. The manganese ores of Brazil are consequently of more than usual interest to us at this time.

El presente texto señala las diversas metodologías adoptadas para la evaluación del impacto visual de la industria extractiva en Asturias (Norte de España) mediante el empleo de las herramientas SIG. Para ello, se evaluaron individualmente el impacto visual de tres canteras de diferente tamaño y morfología, de forma que se obtuvieron las longitudes y superficies aparentemente visibles desde cualquier punto. Así también se analizó la competencia de utilizar el campo visual ocupado por la cantera, el cual se ha calculado a partir del ángulo sólido. Finalmente, se muestran los resultados de las 98 explotaciones a cielo abierto ubicadas en la región y que son adquiridos a partir del modelo digital de elevaciones de resolución 5 m y de los contornos de las zonas explotadas.

The U. S., with only about 6 pct of the world's population, uses from one to two thirds of the world's annual supplies of most metals and minerals. The U. S. strategic materials stockpiling program is designed to enhance our national security position: as stated in the preamble of the Stock Piling Act, to decrease and prevent wherever possible a dangerous and costly dependence upon foreign nations for supplies of strategic and critical materials in times of national emergency.

The geology of pearl River estuary belongs in strong weathered rock quaternary geological systen, so the conditions are complication. Since 80's we built the first deepwater wharf of Shenzhen chiwan port which has 3 berths of 10000 dwt, We have built 3 berths for vessels of 40000 dwt both in Shekou Port and Chiwan port. The berths for carriers of 10000 dwt in Yantian Port of Dapeng Bay are constructing now. In the five years, We built more than 20 deepwater berths of 5000 dwt to 40000 dwt. This paper will introduce how to solve the difficulties of the complex geological conditions and how to use the new fashion construction. We will reduce the period of engineering construction and get good quality and make a good beginning of rapid development of port construction in ShenZhen Special Economic Zone.

Powder and spherical pellets of MoO2 were oxidised under controlled conditions in the temperature range 674-791 K at oxygen partial pressures of 8.1-30.4 kPa. Weight increase during the reaction was determined by thermogravimetric analysis. It was concluded that the reaction is 0.6th order with respect to oxygen concentation and that the activation energy is 148 kJ/mole. In experiments conducted with powder, fast transfer of reaction heat to the gas phase created isothermal conditions, but the temperature of pellets rose by a maximum of 54 K at 674 K and 105 K at 791 K. The rise in temperature caused structural changes such as sintering and crack formation, which had a considerable effect on the reaction rate. The findings should be taken into account in the design of equipment and choice of operating conditions for roasting MoS2

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. Ground water and associated pore pressure represent elements which can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Ground water flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data was available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

The present study examines the use of two vs. one stage of hydrocyclones in a pilot scale ball mill circuit. The approach used for doing this is based on computer simulation with mathematical models that explicitly account for the grinding mill/classification system interaction. Parameters for the ball mill model are obtained using a short-lived radioactive tracer method in open circuit tests of the study mill. The hydrocyclone model, based on the size selectivity concept, is developed and validated in standalone testing of the study hydrocyclones. Simulation procedures are validated through actual tests of the closed circuit grinding configurations of interest. Results of the evaluation indicate that two stages of hydrocyclones in the study circuit would improve classification, increase productivity and lead to more closely sized circuit products when compared to the conventional one stage hydrocyclone circuit. A computer simulation approach for comparing these circuit configurations in larger scale grinding circuits is also suggested.

Rockbursts continue to be a scourge in the mining industry, being responsible for accidents and damage to mining excavations. Although the problem has been present for more than a century, and although much research has been carried out, a solution is still elusive. Determination of, firstly, the demand on the support system imposed in the rockburst and, secondly, the capacity of the support system, cannot be carried out with any confidence, and therefore rockburst support cannot be designed using a conventional design approach. In contrast with the conventional approach, observations of rockburst damage in a mine have revealed a possible alternative approach to rockburst support ? sacrificial support. It was observed, in rockburst events, that a support system consisting of concrete panels restrained by grouted cables was destroyed, and the concrete panels were ejected. However, the rock behind the panels remained apparently undamaged and in place. This behaviour reignited the concept of sacrificial support, conceived more than 20 years ago, and which is described in this paper. The remedial solution implemented on the mine, involving cables wrapped over the panels and retained by grouting into boreholes, has been subjected to rockburst loading and has confirmed the validity of the sacrificial support concept. The concept of sacrificial support may be controversial, but is deliberately presented here with the aim of generating discussions and contributions, and with the ultimate aim of improving safety and reducing rockburst damage in mines. Much attention in controlling blast vibrations has been centred on the probability of causing damage to structures in the area adjacent to where blasting is carried out. In most cases these structures are residential properties and the effect of the vibrations on the occupiers has not been studied to any great extent. This paper looks at the sources of disturbance caused by blasting and their psychological effect. A comparison of ground vibration levels for compliance is examined within the framework of structural and human response.

The use of potential control in the flotation of ores has been applied in a variety of operations and presents an opportunity for improvement of selectivity and recovery of valuable minerals. Although it is possible to vary the redox potential (Eh) using chemical additives such as sodium hypochlorite or hydrogen peroxide this is more commonly done by varying the pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. The present study involves an investigation into the effect of varying dissolved oxygen concentration, ionic strength (IS) and pH on the flotation response with the aim of application to a South African lead-zinc ore. In all cases the Eh is measured as a function of the different DO, IS and pH values. The main objective was to achieve selective flotation of galena from sphalerite. The first part of the work was micro-flotation tests conducted on single minerals with galena used as the basis for effect of the factors studied on redox potential and ultimately recovery. The DO was varied by alternating between the use of air and nitrogen as the gas source to the micro-flotation cell. PH was varied between pH 9.2 and pH 11.8 using sodium hydroxide. In the first part of this study a factorial design approach was used to determine the interactive effects of the variables tested, viz. DO, ionic strength and pH, on the Eh and on the recovery. Redox potential was measured using a combination electrode made up of platinum wire and Ag/AgCl reference combination. Recoveries indicated that pH had the most significant effect on recovery and Eh. The influence of redox potential on recovery was found to be of relevance to the condition of high dissolved oxygen concentration and less so at low dissolved oxygen concentrations. It was also noted that that the combined interaction between ionic strength and dissolved oxygen concentration had a positive effect on recoveries, however this was not so with Eh. The chemistry of the ions in solution was observed to play a dominant role on the recovery due to changes in solubility arising to pH modification. The longer term objective of this work is to determine the optimal Eh conditions for the separation of galena from sphalerite.

Now that such a method of evaluating metallurgical efficiency has been developed and proven practical, it Would seem logical to introduce the next, and more final, factor of Economic Efficiency. I choose to define this term as the percentage ratio of net return from milling to the theoretical maximum net return. The actual operating cost subtracted from the actual mill return represents the net actual amount received for the material treated. Experienced operators of most plants Would ordinarily have enough data on hand to estimate a theoretical milling cost per ton, based on labor, power, supplies and maintenance When operating at maximum tonnage With minimum trouble and under ideal ore conditions. When this theoretical estimated cost is subtracted from the theoretical maximum ore return (calculated by Pallanch's method) the resulting figure is the maximum theoretical net amount the mill operator could hope to realize in processing the ore. The percentage ratio of these sums, of actual to theoretical, is the economic efficiency of the operations. This economic efficiency, if determined on the basis of a fixed market price for metal and similarly fixed base rates for labor, power and supplies, Will reflect the effect of changes in milling practice, labor efficiency and equipment condition. When computations made on the basis of actual current rates for labor, power and supplies are compared With similar actual figures for past periods they will show forcefully how energetic our hunt must be to develop man saving controls, more effective metallurgy, and better equipment to maintain profitable operations. Such computations also offer a simple means of determining how much more labor, supplies and power can be put into the mill operation to obtain an increase in metallurgical recovery at a profit.

Total pressure oxidation (TPOX) is widely outreached leaching practice for base metals from sulfide minerals, wherein high temperature (T ∼ 200 °C) and oxygen pressure (pO2 ∼ 25 bar) are required. These aggressive conditions intensify the oxygen mass transfer, and therefore facilitate metal dissolution. However, challenging-cum-negative aspects of such practice are energy and material intensive requirements and high oxygen demand. Thus, the present study explores the novel emulsified medium for enhancement of oxygen mass transfer, which assists faster metal dissolution at significantly lower temperature and pressure condition. It is possible to achieve quantitative dissolution (>95%) of Cu, Ni and Co from mixed sulfide minerals at T ∼ 95 °C and pO2 ∼ 2 bar using an emulsion of 2.5% (v/v) n-Hexadecane in dilute sulfuric acid. In addition, n-Hexadecane was found to be inert, stable and immiscible in a pressurized leaching system, thus can be easily separated and recycled in subsequent leaching stages. Thus, this study offers an energy efficient route for low temperature-pressure leaching of sulfides.

A fluorometric method using morin in an alkaline-buffered chelating solution has been developed by the Bureau of Mines for determining beryllium in ores and mill products. Apparatus for measuring fluorescence intensities of the beryllium-morin reaction is described. Preparation of the sample for analysis consists essentially of digestion with sulfuric, nitric, and hydrofluoric acids, fusion of the residue with sodium carbonate and sodium borate, Solution of the melt with sulfuric acid, and proper dilution. Chemical separation of other ions is usually unnecessary. The method rave reliable beryllium determinations on samples in the 0.01- to 0.37-percent BeO range. The method is particularly applicable to low-grade beryllium ores; however, semiquantitative beryllium determinations have been made on beryl containing 12.0 percent BeO.
