It is perhaps a little difficult for Americans fully to appreciate the slow progress in the search for oil in Australia. Conditions are so different from those in the United States that methods must also differ considerably. Australia possesses an area almost exactly equal to that of the United States, but has a population of less than 7,000,000, and this population is concentrated almost entirely around the eastern and southern coasts of the continent. There are, therefore, vast "empty spaces" entirely unpopulated or exceedingly sparsely populated. The emptiness is due not to any lack of energy or initiative on the part of Australians but to the arid and waterless character of much of the country's interior. Throughout the greater part of the area that is comparable with the Mississippi drainage area of the United States, there is not a single flowing stream, and over most of it the rainfall is less than 7 in. a year. This hinders exploration and geological survey, and also isolates from potential markets many of the regions that otherwise might be considered worth prospecting. Also, Australia consists of six independent and sovereign states. With the establishment in 1901 of the Commonwealth of Australia, the states retained complete control of lands and mineral rights. Each state has its own petroleum legislation, and the absence of a central controlling authority has tended to confusion and to the introduction of many complications in oil prospecting. There are three major "territories," administered by the Federal Government; namely, the Northern Territory, enclosed between the northern parts of Queensland and Western Australia, within Australia itself, and the Territories of Papua and New Guinea in the island of New Guinea. Land and mineral legislation in these territories is not uniform. Furthermore, during the late twenties there occurred an orgy of company flotation and indiscriminate drilling, wQch resulted in the discovery of some definite indications of oil in three of the states and two of the territories, but which failed to develop any producing oil field in the common acceptation of the term. BOTH physical and economic factors are concerned in determining the optimum rate of depletion of a mineral deposit. The physical limitations are, in a large measure fixed by nature. Economic influences on the other hand, are man-made and subject to wide changes. Analyses of the interrelations of these two groups of factors are of major importance in selecting the optimum rate of production of petroleum and mining properties and in their valuation. Physical Influences PRIMARY limitations on the rate of mining are the rate of shaft sinking and underground development, the rate of hoisting, and the rate of sloping. These rates are largely determined by the physical features of a property. Technical methods which may be employed, and consequently the length of time required, are governed by the dimensions of the deposit, its attitude, depth, regularity, the unit value and character of the ore, the nature of the wall rocks, and similar factors.

THE subject of the flow of air through a mine under the influence of natural ventilation has proved an elusive one. To my knowledge only cut and try algebraic solutions have been used where multiple paths are involved. The object of this paper is to present a method for the graphi-cal determination of the flow induced by the natural ventilation pressure (N.V.P.) alone or in combination with a fan. The N.V.P., measured in pounds per square foot, induced by two columns of air between two horizontal planes at different elevations, is equal to the difference in weight of the two columns, assuming each to have a cross-sectional area of 1 sq. ft. Pressure in pounds per square foot is converted into inches of water by dividing by 5.19. Methods of calculating the N.V.P. have been discussed in the litera-ture. In this paper, for simplification of exposition, the change in pres-sure due to the weight of superimposed air will be assumed directly proportional to the length of the column. The actual methods of cal-culating the N.V.P. do not affect the solutions to be presented. It must be realized that the precision to be obtained from the small-scale, inked diagrams presented is not as great as would be obtained from large-scale, penciled curves that would he used in practice. The accuracy of the curves does not warrant reading "volumes" closer than the nearest thousand cubic feet per minute.

The equilibrium constants developed by Souders, Selheimer and Brown1' have been very useful tools in predicting vapor-liquid equilibria during the past five years. Their equilibrium constants were computed by assuming ideal solutions and recognizing the deviations of vapors from ideal gas laws. The same fundamental concepts were used by Lewis and co-workers8 for predicting vaporization phenomena by means of fugacities. The equilibrium constant is defined by equation 1: y\x =K [1] in which K = equilibrium constant, y = mol fraction of a constituent in the vapor phase, x = mol fraction of the constituent in the equilibrium liquid phase. The equilibrium constants are a function of temperature and pressure and might be considered as replacing the ratio of the vapor pressure to the total pressure of Raoult's law. They may be used to compute the vapor or saturation pressure of a liquid or the dew point of a vapor for any pressure or temperature from the analysis of the mixture much as Raoult's law is used. Likewise, the quantity of a mixture that will vaporize at any equilibrium temperature and pressure and the composition of the vapor and liquid may be calculated. The purpose of this paper is to review the available equilibrium data of interest in petroleum production, to discuss the auxiliary physical properties of the hydrocarbons, and to present typical uses of the equilibrium constants. The particular applications chosen are the computation of the results of stage separation of crude oil and natural gas, the calcula: tion of a pressure-volume curve of a crude oil-natural gas mixture, and information gleaned from a consideration of reservoir equilibria.

IN a recent study1 of the deformation of metastable beta copper-zinc and beta copper-tin crystals, it was established that the parallel markings that appear on the surface of these crystals after slight deformation represent lattice transformations. Stereographic analysis showed that in beta copper-tin, the poles of these markings deviated one or two degrees from poles of the form 1133). In beta copper-zinc the plane delineated by the markings corresponded to no one crystallographic plane of the matrix lattice; the marking poles deviated from 5° to 11° from poles of the form {110}, and were displaced only a few degrees from (110) zones. Inasmuch as the new transition lattices produced as the result of the deformation are different for each alloy, it was thought at first that the habits of the markings might be the result of a cooperation between matrix lattice and transformed lattice. (Both matrix lattices are body-centered cubic.) Such a cooperative effect is thought to obtain in the formation of Widmanstätten figures, for it is well known that the matrix lattice alone does not determine the habit assumed by a segregate phase. On the other hand, it is not inconceivable that the dissimilarity in marking habit might be due to differences in deformation characteristics of beta brass and beta bronze. Barrett and co-workers2 have shown that slip-line habits in pure iron are markedly different from those in high-silicon ferrite; and although it has been repeatedly demonstrated that plates of a segregate phase do not necessarily form on the slip planes of the matrix lattice, deformation characteristics may be more intimately allied with plate formation when a transformation is made to occur as a result of plastic deformation. However, there is the fact that the orientation of markings in metastable beta copper-zinc is the same whether the markings be produced by quenching, deformation, or liquid-air cooling; likewise, quenching and deformation markings in metastable beta copper-tin are oriented in the same way with respect to the beta matrix. The trend initiated in January 1936, of stabilized gasoline prices, increased demand and extraordinary drilling activity, continued in California during the year 1937. Crude prices were maintained during the year at the highest level since September 1930. Wildcat activity with resultant new discoveries and development of proven acreage were greater than in any year since 1928. Many fields in California in former years have been produced at full capacity, with consequent loss of reservoir energy, but at the present time continued activity is maintained to develop adequate reserves, so that production in these fields can be taken at a rate to correspond with good operating practice. Naturally, this good operating practice will be influenced to some degree by gas outlets and, in certain instances perhaps, by oil outlets. In any event, these last two controlling features will result in favorable rather than detrimental operation. In fields producing from great depths, ultimate production will be practically limited to the flowing and compressor life of the well, since there is as yet no economical method for pumping wells below depths of approximately 7000 ft. Experience has shown, however, that such pumping difficulties will be overcome and that production secured by pumping will add some to reserves established on the flowing life of the wells. California continued to operate under voluntary curtailment, but with unlimited transfers of allowable between various fields. Even though there was at all times considerable production above the Umpire's established quota, a constantly increasing demand reduced storage during the year. This increasing demand was due mainly to the rapid rise in Pacific foreign shipments from May to September. It is questionable, however, whether this favorable condition will be maintained over a prolonged period. (See Fig. 1.) Knowledge of the phase relations of the fluids that exist in the porous spaces of rocks constituting natural petroleum reservoirs and of the behavior of these fluids under various field conditions of operation is essential to the conservation of petroleum and natural gas and to their efficient recovery. The problem of determining whether these fluids are in the liquid or gaseous state and of recognizing the transitions that may take place as the material in the reservoir is subjected to different conditions of pressure and temperature confronts many producers today, especially in certain fields. Common salt is mentioned in the most ancient writings as an important article of diet. It is fairly certain that it was used by men and animals long before the dawn of civilization. Its presence in natural springs has often been the determining factor in colonization; wars have been fought for possession of salt deposits; trade routes have been established expressly for the purpose of traffic in salt. Naturally this led men into adventures and discoveries that altered history and advanced civilization. In the early days the uses for salt were few and the methods of manufacture were crude and the purity low when compared to salt of the present day. Then the salt came largely from springs, shallow wells or the ocean, while today deep wells must be drilled to the natural brines or beds of rock salt and spacious shafts sunk so that the ancient deposits may be made to yield their supply of stored mineral. Mining and Purification The quantity of available salt seems inexhaustible. It occurs in practically every country of the globe. About 20 million tons is produced and consumed annually in the world. Of this amount about 7 million tons is produced in the United States; 13/4 million tons of rock salt, 2 1/4 million tons as evaporated salt and 31/2 million tons in brine used in the chemical industry. Mined rock salt is used in its natural state without purification. It is classified for the trade by crushing and screening. The average purity of rock salt mined in the United States is about 98.3 per cent pure sodium chloride1. The usual impurities are gypsiferous shale, anhydrite and silica, with traces of potassium, magnesium and calcium compounds. Refined or evaporated salt is made by crystallizing the salt from brine in open pans or vacuum pans. A comparatively small amount of salt is made from ocean water or the brines of inland lakes or seas, sometimes by solar evaporation. By far the larger amount of brine is obtained by drill-

A STUDY of the effects of temperature on the gel strength of drilling muds is a natural outgrowth of the present era of deep drilling. The control of the gel solids' is now considered important because it affects the wall-building qualities; the suspension of weighting material; the removal and release of sand, cuttings, and gas; and the control of cav-ing formations. With regard to the effect of temperature on gel strengths Herrick2 states: "Temperature variation within ordinary limits does not have much effect on yield points." Lewis, Squires and Thompson3 investi-gated one clay and found no marked change with temperature in either yield point or mobility. Reed4 found that potassium bentonite showed a great increase of gelation with increase in temperature and qualitatively there occurred a marked increase in viscosity upon heating. The apparatus used in these experiments consisted of a Stormer viscosimeter, Marsh funnel viscosimeter, rectangular and cylindrical shearometers, Mudwate hydrometer, and other minor laboratory equip-ment. The various methods of measuring viscosity and gel strength have been extensively described by Evans and Reid.5

In mining coal, the Nation's principal mineral fuel, loss of life has been much lower recently than in earlier years when coal mining contributed so heavily to the industrial-accident death toll in the United States. Particularly notable has been the relatively small number of deaths during the past few years compared with the number that occurred 20 or 30 years ago. Reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines, covering all commercially operated mines that were active during all or any part of the calendar year 1935, showed that accidents during that year had resulted in the loss of 1,242 lives. This death toll, although regrettable, represents a material improvement over the industry's experience during most years prior to 1935, and especially over the industry's worst year, 1907, when 3,242 men were killed. Fewer lives were lost in 1933, when 1,064 men were killed at work, than during any year for which complete figures are available.

This is one of a series of paper's being published by the Bureau of Mines on placer mining; it is written as a supplement to Information Circular 6788, "Placer Mining in the Western United States, Part III", by E. D. Gardner and C. H. Johnson which was published in February 1935. Since Information Circular 6788 was written (1933), considerable advance has been made in the technique of mining placer gravels with power shovels and draglines. Although new washing plants continue to be built in accordance with untried designs the trend of new installations is toward proved equipment. A substantial number of plants are now being operated successfully (1937).

THE treatment of emulsified crude oils has been a problem for years in the petroleum industry. Until comparatively recently various methods of settling with and without chemicals have been used with indifferent success. Since wells have been acidized, emulsified crudes have been produced, which acid considerably to the need for improved methods of treatment. The presence of large quantities of salts in the oils from acid-ized wells has presented several new problems to the industry. The use of hydrochloric acid in well treatments has caused the formation of sodium, magnesium, and calcium chlorides by interaction with the dolomitic limestones. These salts dissolve readily in the water normally present in the oil, and they are therefore incorporated in the emulsified oil. The crystalline salts have also been found in the oil, prevented from settling by protective films such as asphalt, resins and petrolatum. In, some instances, free hydrochloric acid has been found. The salts may be present in crude oil in amounts ranging from a few pounds to over 1000 lb. per 1000 bbl. of oil. The transportation of these crude oils through pipe lines has led to erosive and corrosive effects, which are a tremendous cost to the petroleum industry. During 1937, more than 1,200,000,000 bbl. of crude oil was transported through pipe lines. Of this quantity approximately 10,000,000 bbl. was water, and considerably more than 50,000,000 lb. was salts. If the crude oils were treated at the producing wells to remove the salts and water, an appreciable saving would be possible. The treatment would not be difficult, since it has been found that these oils are more easily treated at the time they are produced than after the aging and more stable emulsification that occur before they reach the refinery. Since great costs are involved in the use of these salty crudes at the refinery, treated oils essentially free of salts would naturally command a premium.

This report follows the same general scheme as did its predecessors; it begins with a dissertation on some phase of ore-testing, continues with results of investigations of ore-treatment methods and of metallurgically important analytical processes, and concludes with an exposition of tests made by established methods on typical ores selected as representative of certain mining districts. One of the first things that is done after an ore has been received is to look at it under the microscope. Microscopic examination serves as an important complement to chemical analysis in interpreting the percentage composition in terms of minerals. If it has been found difficult to treat an ore, the reasons for this action and indicated methods to overcome the difficulties may be ascertained by testing with a microscope. For example, failures in selective flotation have been traced to intimate mineral association and changes in mineral surfaces through incipient oxidation. The importance of surface stains or tarnishes and the presence of adhering slime particles have been found to be responsible for the difficulty experienced in the treatment of certain gold ores.

Patent records show that the attempt to improve the burning of fuel by mixture or pretreatment with chemicals dates back to the early years of the last century. By 1845 English and French patents had included the specific beneficiations of elimination or reduction of smoke, soot and clinker; reduction of the ashes; elimination of sulphur fumes; increase of the rate of burning; increase of the time a given charge of fuel would last; and, in most patents, a saving of fuel. The earlier patents specified additions up to 80 lb. or more per ton of fuel, but after 1860 the quantity was seldom more than 4 lb. There is no record of the extent to which these patents were commercialized, but after 1874 many American patents were assigned to companies specializing in treatment of coal, so it is probable that the products were marketed on a considerable scale at least as early as that date. From 1900 on, many proprietary products were marketed under the general name of "fuel savers," the principal sales being in small packages for the use of householders; savings of from 10 to 40 per cent of the coal were promised. Starting with 1927, the use of proprietary or other mixtures of chemicals was extended to power plants and to treatment of coals at the mines, the claims of saving of fuel being subordinated to those of general improvement and, in particular, to reduction of clinker-ing. Such expectations are attractive and a number of companies experimented with or adopted the practice. There were reports of improved operation, but, apparently, few were confident enough that these improvements were due to the salts to publish the results of tests or their records of operation. There are no data on the yearly tonnage of coal treated but indirect reports suggest that it has been relatively large. Since its establishment in 1910, the U. S. Bureau of Mines has continually received inquiries about these products. At the request of other governmental departments it made tests in 1910, 1916 and 1930, using certain proprietary products applied according to the instructions of the vendors; these tests were made with eastern coals in domestic and
