IN a recent article,† it was shown that in the blast furnaces in Germany that are lined with carbon blocks no cooling plates are used, and that shower cooling is employed on the hearth and bosh sections. While one of the authors was in Germany he was told that one furnace was being operated without even the shower cooling on the bosh section, though the hearth section was shower-cooled. In discussion of this interesting situation with a number of blast-furnace operators in this country, it was made clearly and promptly evident that shower cooling was very unpopular, probably because of its messiness and its ineffectiveness. Both of the causes for the dislike of shower coolings are reasonable ones. Shower cooling can be and frequently is messy, but the present cooling of blast furnaces leaves much to be desired on that score. Shower cooling is ineffective as compared with plate cooling, so far as its usefulness in keeping the bricks cool enough not to melt or fall to pieces is concerned. However, the introduction of carbon linings changes the situation. No one is concerned with keeping a carbon lining cool, for no temperature in the blast furnace has any effect on carbon, which is just as stable at 3000°F. as it is at 70°F. The only concern is for the shell-to keep it cool enough for safety and comfort and for that shower cooling is sufficient. Of course, with only the shell to cool, instead of the shell plus all the refractory material, much less water would be required, and the necessity for constant attention to the flow would be lessened, as the hundreds of inlets and outlets would be eliminated. Probably half of the water used in cooling a blast furnace is used for cooling the shaft and tuyeres and the remainder for the bosh and hearth sections. However, in view of the dislike of shower cooling in the United States, and particularly because at least one German blast furnace is operated with no cooling of the bosh section, thought was given to the possibility that a carbon-lined blast furnace might be operated without any cooling of the entire carbon-lined portion. For that reason a series of experiments was performed to determine what might be the temperature of the shell of a blast furnace protected by a carbon lining and operated under varying conditions up to a maximum inside temperature of 3000°F. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. I and a photograph of the entire assembly in Fig. 2. Production in Colombia attained a new high during 1940 when it reached a total of 25,607,976 bbl. Of this amount, the Tropical Oil Co. produced 21;426,492 bbl., including 268,586 bbl. of petroleum condensate, and the Cololmbian Petroleum Co. produced 4,181,484 bbl. from its Barco property. The wildcatting program of different companies in the Magdalena Valley that was initiated during the previous year was continued but with results that were decidedly disappointing. Ten wells were drilled in the Magdalena Valley between the approximate latitudes of Puerto Wilches and Puerto Berrio and nine of these were dry; the tenth was a small producer of no commercial importance. The prospects of finding new fields in the Magdalena Valley thus received a serious setback, since some of the tests drilled were on well developed surface structures. The prospects of the Valley, however, have by no means been exhausted and drilling operations are being continued on other prospects. The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. A PROPER consideration of the subject of this paper should include economic aspects as well as the technical phases of the metallurgy, production, and properties of the product. The metallurgical phases of the processing and properties of the product will be considered only from practical aspects and within the scope of the writer's experience with tonnage production. The Bessemer process was invented 85 years ago and became important because it put steel manufacture upon a larger and less costly basis. In America the Bessemer production has declined for many years and has not maintained its proportionate place with the rapid advances of the open hearth. The achievements in the open-hearth field were attained by the greater number of technical people attracted to that branch of the industry. The antipathy of technical students for the older and less popular Bessemer field gradually weakened the forces defending it and retarded the development of new and better methods. In Europe the economic advantage of the basic Bessemer process has not been overlooked and the tonnage usually is greater than that of the open hearth. The acid process has been the subject of renewed attention in America during the past few years and those who are more familiar with it are striving to show that the method is too valuable to abandon. A considerable tonnage of Bessemer-blown metal, in both molten and ingot forms, used in connection with the open-hearth practice makes it an important auxiliary unit to the industry. This practice aids in modifying the price level of heavy remelting scrap in addition to speeding up the open-hearth operation. The use of Bessemer steel has continued not only because of periodic economic advantages but also because of certain inherent qualities of machinability, weldability and stiffness, which are valuable for many applications. The properties of stiffness and rather high reaction to cold-work require some modification in order to meet the demands of modern methods of processing, which involve cold-reduction and cold-forming. At least one factor contributing to the stiffness of this steel is the relatively high phosphorus content of the acid product. The phosphorus content of the Thomas or basic Bessemer steel of Europe is considerably lower than the normal acid product in America. The American industry has continued the use of the acid process chiefly for the reason that the available ores are more easily adapted to this process from both metallurgical and economic standpoints. In European practice the basic process is necessary with the highly phosphoric ores available and it is sustained to some degree by the sale of the rich phosphate slag as a by-product. The basic process was used in this country at several plants many years ago, but was abandoned for economic reasons. A part of the past history of these trials is given here because the author believes it has not been published and it has some bearing on the subject of this paper. Marchant, duly seconded, voted and carried, the reading of the minutes of the thirty-eighth regular meeting was dispensed with. On motion of Ronald C. Oliver, duly seconded, voted and carried, the President was authorized to appoint auditing, new members, resolutions and nominating committees, which appointments he then announced would be made at the afternoon session. An interesting talkie entitled "Coal Mine Explosions" was shown by Mr. William Forbes for the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

THE education of adolescents to perform the duties and assume the responsibilities of maturity has been a characteristic of human society since the dawn of history. In the beginning the members of the immediate family performed this function, and in modern life they still have an important part in it. Possibly religion was the first field in which education began to be functional; young people were sent for instruction to a teacher who had a broader and deeper knowledge of the subject than was possessed by the family. It does not seem necessary for our purpose to attempt to determine how, when, or where instruction in the practical arts first' began to become functional, and the brief outline which follows must suffice. The discovery and utilization of mineral substances to improve and maintain the conditions of human living is a practical art, which must have had an almost accidental origin and have been developed by empirical experiments. We do not know, nor would it be useful to try to fancy, how men first learned that they could make use .of mineral substances to their benefit, but how- ever that knowledge was initially gained it was certainly trans mitted through instruction in the family. At first such activities must have been merely a .minor part of the making of a-living, but in time those who excelled found it better to devote them-

THROUGHOUT the Colonial era, Philadelphia was easily , the leading city of North America, and it still held that position at the end of the period, with a population of about 25,000, though closely pressed by Boston, which had slightly over 20,000, and New York, which had nearly as many. It was the center of a region in which mineral industry was important. Thomas Rutter's bloomery, built in the Schuylkill valley in 1716, was quickly followed by many others, and during the Colonial period at least 20 blast furnaces, 45 forges, and iron- works of other types were built in eastern Pennsylvania, which easily led all the other colonies in iron manufacture. During the Revolutionary period others were erected as far west as Fort Loudon, in the Cumberland c alley.^ After 1800 the rapid development of the anthracite mining industry profoundly affected Philadelphia's, development, since transportation of the coal was then necessarily by water, and the streams of the anthracite . regions mostly flowed into either the Schuylkill or the Delaware Rivers. With an abundant near-by supply of coal and iron, with the seat of government, which had been there since 1774, and with a National Bank established there in 1791, one would have seemed safe in prophesying, at the beginning of the nineteenth century, that Philadelphia would permanently remain the leading city of the United States. Education in Philadelphia was at first wholly in the hands of the Quakers, who had established a "Public School" there in 1689, but in November 1739 George Whitefield, who had created a sensation in England by his preaching, though only 24 years old, passed through Philadelphia on his way to Georgia to found an orphan school there. I assure you that Mr. Krippner, the General Chairman, and his associates have an outstanding program in store for you, and trust it will be of much interest to the industry. I note by the program they have me slated for an opening address, but I am going to defer that, proceed with the remainder of the program, and endeavor to go on schedule and keep matters on schedule as outlined on our program. The first item on the program is the reading of the minutes of the thirty-eighth regular meeting by the Secretary. I might say that it has been customary in the past that we omit the reading of the minutes. If that is not agreeable, we will read them; otherwise, I would like for someone to make a motion that we dispense with the reading of the minutes, inasmuch as they are published in our annual report each year. IT has long been accepted that blast-furnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirable in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blast-furnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: I. Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the production of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. Limitations of the use of screen tests as an objective measure of coke quality. 8. Importance of uniformity in coke. The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defence for purposes other than the extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation's natural nonmetallic is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of the Bureau of Mines). Problems covering the use of minerals and fundamental problems as to their properties are studied at College Park.

Pill Florida hard-rock field extends from Suwanee and Columbia Counties in northwest Florida to south of Croom, Florida, in Hernando County this area is approximately 100 miles long and varies from 2 to 30 miles 1n width Florida hard-rock phosphate was discovered at Hale Springs, about one mile northwest of the town of Dunnellon Marion County, in the year 1888, by Albertus Voight who lived within a few hundred yards of the spring Soon after this discovery there was a great influx of land speculators and wildcat operators into the vicinity of Dunnellon A few years later phosphate was found in Alachua, Levy, Citrus and Hernando Counties, and a great number of small crude plants were built from Newberry, Alachua County, all the way to Croom, Hernando County Phosphate was found in many places as "outcrops " Looking for outcrops was the first method used by the early prospectors in searching for deposits Several years passed before any systematic method of prospecting was used EARLY MINING The early method of mining hard-rock phosphate was with picks and shovels, wheelbarrows, mules and wagons The pick-and-shovel method was used altogether until about 1900, when some of the larger operators began to use railroad-type steam shovels of from 1/2 to 1-yd capacity Picks and shovels, with negro labor loading the phosphate ore (called "matrix") into wooden side-dump skip-cars, was continued until about 1907 From the discovery of hard-rock phosphate until approximately 1905, overburden was removed with mules and scrapers At some places, the overburden was loaded into side-du nip skip-cars by negro laborers and the cars were then pulled up an incline with a steam hoisting engine The maximum depth of overburden that could be economically removed by hand labor mules and scrapers was approximately 15 feet About 1905 one of the companies erected a producer-gas powerhouse near Dunnellon and generated its own electricity and about the same time the larger companies began using hydraulic methods for the removal of overburden From the year 1888 through the year 1939, approximately 75 companies were operating at one time or another in the hard-rock territory, on approximately 500 locations The hard-rock deposits are more irregular and have higher mining costs than the pebble-rock deposits, therefore they have not been competitive in the domestic market, but because of the higher grade of the hard rock it is in demand for the export trade Discovery of phosphate outside of the United States has made it increasingly difficult in recent years for the hard-rock companies to survive, so today only three companies are operating These

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

[A system of analysis for sulfur groups in petroleum distillates has been developed as one phase of the Bureau-of Mines investigation of the more economic utilization of the so-called "black oils" of Wyoming. This problem is being studied by the Bureau of Mines under a cooperative agreement with the University of Wyoming at the Bureau's Petroleum Experiment Station , Laramie, Wyo. Wyoming black oils have high sulfur and asphalt content and usually yield only small percentages of straight-run gasoline. A more detailed description of the properties of black oils has been given in a previous publication (3)3/. The preparation and properties of asphalts from those oils have been described (1, 2), and the effect of thermal cracking and the use of ordinary methods of treating wore discussed in one Bureau publication (4), Although these studies gave considerable insight into the properties and characteristics of black- oils; it was thought t that a more fundamental attack would assist-materially in, the problem of sulfur removal.]

The art of electric smelting came with the turn of the present century and owes its existence to the introduction of alternating current, which found its first wide use in the establishment of the great power plants at Niagara Falls, N. Y. Prior to that time current was largely direct. The furnaces were electrolytic in nature and found their first metallurgical use in the production of aluminum, and this process still prevails. The normal production of pig iron up to that time was carried on in blast furnaces in which charcoal, coke and anthracite were used as the fuel. This new electric process called for sufficient carbonaceous material to reduce the oxides and impregnate the pig iron with sufficient carbon, but the remainder of the energy was to be supplied by electric power. The chemical reactions are essentially the same in electric smelting as obtains in the older blast furnace. All of these data are so well known in both methods as to need no discussion at this time, for they can be found in scientific : publications and books written during the first two decades of this century. Types of Furnaces The 40 years devoted to the practice of electric smelting may be divided into two . periods of 20 years each. The first was devoted to experimentation with furnace types and with many publications on theories and processes. The second half of this term was devoted to perfecting the types of furnaces and their active commercial operation. The arc furnace may be found in three types: (1) the direct-heating arc furnace with the positive electrode included in the bottom and the other electrode suspended above; (2) the independent arc furnace with its electrodes entirely above the charge, which of necessity depends upon heat reflected from the roof; (3) the direct-heating series arc furnace equipped with two or more electrodes suspended from the roof. Of these three types, only the last is used in electric smelting of iron ore at the present time. The elimination of the other types automatically removed many of the early designs, to the end that there are now only two general types in operation: (I) the " Electrometalls" or high-shaft furnace of Sweden, and (2) the low-shaft or pit-type furnace as offered by Tysland-Hole and Siemens-Halske. The "Electrometalls" furnace takes its name from the corporation formed by the engineers that had undertaken its perfection. After trying several designs they brought forward the furnace shown in Fig. I, which by the way is the highest development of this type of furnace as of today.l Note the trend in the lines, which have kept pace with modern blast-furnace design. IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds ;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established.23 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2 : I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resins may serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium. some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17, 32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. PREVIOUS determinations1,2,3 of the texture of magnesium and its alloys have shown only slight variations in the principal features of the structure. This investigation presents pole figures for magnesium and two of its alloys, in which differences of some magnitude will be shown. Schmid and Wassermann have considered the texture of magnesium in analogy with that of zinc-also a hexagonal lattice. Whereas the zinc texture is said to be derived primarily through basal slip and secondarily through {102}† twinning, the {102} twinning is considered impossible at the later stages of the rolling in magnesium because of its smaller axial ratio. This state of affairs appears reasonable for pure magnesium, but for alloy textures the situation is more complex. A double orientation similar to that found in zinc has been reported by J. D. Hanawalt,4 and the addition of small amounts of calcium to magnesium and its alloys to produce a double texture was noted by J. C. McDonald.5 The pole figures of this investigation, using an improved X-ray technique, show these various textures. The dependence of directional properties of rolled sheet on modifications of texture is well recognized. Correlation of physical properties with existing texture should be even more significant if quantitative valuations are attached to the various areas on the pole figures. Such a quantitative technique is developed herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Two alloys were used, besides high-purity magnesium. In each case, the metal was extruded to bars 32 in. thick and hot-rolled to a thickness of about 0.075 in. It had been established previously that such a reduction was more than sufficient to eliminate the extruded structure. The rolling proceeded in the same direction as that of the extrusion, without any cross rolling. The temperatures corresponded to normal commercial practice, averaging around 600°F. A unique method of preparing the sample was developed in this work. Instead of using a flat specimen, a stem of the metal was cut out of the rolled sheet in the desired direction (rolling direction) as shown in Fig. 2. From a sheet of 0.075 to 0.065-in. gauge, the stem was cut to a square cross section with a jeweler's saw, rounded with a file and polishing paper to a diameter of 0.060 in, and evenly etched in dilute hydrochloric acid to a diameter of 0.038 ± 0.001 in. In this way, a cylinder of the original sheet with its axis in the desired direction was produced. By using this type of specimen for the pin-point pictures, any variance in the absorption of the diffracted beam at the various angular settings of the specimen, was completely eliminated.*

IN discussing stope filling, or backfilling, at the Sullivan mine, at Kimberley, B.C., a brief description of the problem will first be presented. The Sullivan orebody is a replacement in quartzite, with the ore con-forming, for the most part, with the bedding. The dip of the vein, apart from local irregularities, averages about 15 degrees near the outcrop in the southwest section of the mine, and steepens to almost 40 degrees at the northeast end of the mine. The thickness varies from a few feet to over 200 feet at the widest sections. The mineable length along the strike has averaged about 4,000 feet between the 4,600 and 3,900 levels-the section under discussion in this paper. To date, 28,000,000 tons of ore have been mined by the room-and-pillar method. Prior to 1930, all ground opened up had been supported by ore pillars, left during mining operations. From that time, the recovery of the ore from these pillars has been given serious consideration. Backfilling, as being carried on today, is the result of this study and is being done for two reasons: (1) to allow extraction of the ore pillars, and (2) to minimize subsidence of the hanging-wall rock, except where forced caving is found desirable. PRELIMINARY DEVELOPMENTS LEADING TO BACKFILLING When the Sullivan orebody was first opened up, early in the century, there appeared to be low-grade sections of the vein sufficient in extent to serve as permanent support for the roof. However, as mining extended into sections of the vein that showed continuous ore over greater areas, wooden cribs, filled with waste and low-grade ore, were erected. In some stopes, these cribs were as large as 40 ft. by 100 ft. in plan and from 50 ft. to 60 ft. in height, but it was soon realized that this method of support was inadequate. As mining progressed, it was found necessary to leave ore pillars, which eventually became the sole system of support. At first, these pillars were left at irregular intervals, but later they were laid out at definite locations on the mine plans, and these locations were adhered to as closely as mining would permit.

The investigations of Wymanl have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunily to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydrogen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxygen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxidizing anneal, but beyond this the mechanism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subsequently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves be reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the subscale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as SiO2.Cu2O, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been concluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or individually under more or less predictable conditions. Effect OF Precipitated Cuprous Oxide and Dissolved Oxygen The literature provides no definite proof that oxygen in solid solution in copper can confer susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement; indeed, the research of Leiter2 seemed to indicate the opposite—that to produce the effect, cuprous oxide must be present in massive form and in a more or less continuous network along the grain boundaries. To test this point, pure copper has been annealed in hydrogen under conditions designed to ensure the presence in various samples of: (I) precipitated cuprous oxide, (2) dissolved oxygen only, and (3) no oxygen in any form. Very pure copper" said to contain no oxygen and no spectro-scopically detectable traces of any other element (that is, no individual detectable impurity in quantity greater than 0.0001 per cent) was used. Strips of this material cold.-rolled 75 per cent to 1/8 in. in thickness were subjected to the following treatments, the results of which are noted:
