Recently, in the United States, questions of possible deleterious synergistic health effects of the gaseous and particulate components in the diesel exhaust and mineral and coal dust have been the impetus for extensive research by several agencies. At the present time, diesel engines are tested and approved for use in gassy and non-gassy underground metal and non-metal mines under Parts 31, 32, and 36 of Title30 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Diesel-powered equipment for use in underground coal mines, though not explicitly addressed in the law, is administered under Parts 32 and 36 of Title 30, with Part 36 being applied in the case of equipment working inby the last open crosscut or in the return airways. Operation of diesel equipment in underground mines has the potential for serious health and safety hazards from the gases, vapors, and particulates in the exhaust. Therefore, various countries have rules and regulations for the safe deployment of diesel equipment. The applicable laws and regulations from several countries who have long experience with diesel-powered equipment in their mines are reviewed. Four major areas have been addressed: (1) testing and approval procedures of diesel engines, (2) ambient mine air quality specifications, (3) frequency of sampling and location of samples, and (4) air quality specifications in splits where diesel-powered equipment are operated. The review indicates that most regulations generally consider four possible hazards: (1) toxic components in the engine exhaust, (2) ignition of flammable atmospheres by the engine or electrical equipment, (3) fire hazards presented by the engine fuel oil and by combustible material that might come in contact with the equipment, and (4) mechanical hazards. There is a remarkable similarity in the laws with regard to engine design, testing and approval procedures. However, the aspects with regard to mine air quality and quantity are quite variable-- from a general statement to very specific standards for many different diesel exhaust constituents. However, the laws with regard to synergistic effects of diesel exhaust components and other mine air contaminants are an exception.

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.8OC (O°F). Other applications of FCA include deicing: conveyor belts, idler, idler arms, and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. The literature of mine ventilation is very diverse in nature, widely interdisciplinary, and extremely international in scope. Important references are found in indexes, abstracts, government documents, technical reports, journals, conference and symposia proceedings, and monographs. In this decade computer searches of the literature have greatly aided researchers in finding needed items. There is, however, no convenient summary of recent English language literature in coal and non-coal mine ventilation. This paper attempts to fill that gap in the literature. Because of the worldwide provenance of the subject and the attendant publication deluge, this paper covers only current English language publications on ventilation. The writers have examined the field's English language abstracts, indexes, bibliographies, periodicals, technical reports, books, and symposia and conference, proceedings. The survey also considers the field's most important bibliographic data bases. It should be noted that addresses for many of the literature sources listed in the paper are given in the section on literature and data base information sources.

A technique is presented for simple characterization of the performance of flocculents in various mining applications. The method utilizes three key parameters obtained from raw settling data and combines them into a single athematical parameter called the desirability coefficient. The first two parameters are the timesrequired for the slurry-supernatant interface -to fall to two selected fractions of the starting height, and the third is the clarity of the supernatant liquid. The relative values of the three parameters may be assigned different weights in order to make them correspond with laboratory and field performance requirements of a particular industry. Provision is also made of an, internal comparison of test flocculant data with that of a control.

The purpose of this research contract was to develop and test a Saran latex modified portland cement concrete lagging to be used as a replacement for wood lagging. The scope of work performed was divided into four phases: Phase I - Engineering Criteria; Phase-! I1 - Design Study; Phase III - Fabrication of Lagging; and Phase IV - Prototype Demonstration Project. Each phase of work was completed and is described in detail in this report. The prototype latex modified concrete lagging developed in this program weighed 52 pounds. When tested in flexure, it supported center point loading of 4500 pounds and under 1/4 point loading it supported loadings of 7000 pounds. Deflections at maximum loading ranged from 1/2 to 1 inch. Maximum deflections exceed 2 inches. The lagging does not exhibit catastrophic failure. Two hundred and twenty of the LMC lagging were produced and shipped to the Bunker Hill Company in Kellogg, Idaho for installation in their mine at the 17 level. The lagging are performing satisfactory after 22 months exposure in the mine.

Cable reel systems for shuttle cars were investigated to determine whether an improved system could be identified. Interviews and mine visits were conducted to better define limitations and problems with present systems. Although simple and relatively inexpensive, present cable reel systems are not fully satisfactory. Several concepts for a different technical configuration were formulated and evaluated. An all ectric system using electronic control and external sensors was recommended for further development.

Abstract. The shaft was drilled on U.S. Government land in the Piceance Creek Basin and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. It was drilled to 723 meters (2 371') to provide access to rich deposits of oil shale, nahcolite and dawsonite for geotechnical test work and environmental mining research. Rotary drilling and dual string, reverse-air, jet-assist circulation methods were used. Drilling required 8 months. Site preparation, running and cementing the casing required another 4 months. A 2.44-meter (96-inch) ID steel welded casing, 5.1 cm (2 inches) thick was installed and 2 700 tonnes (63 000 sacks) of cement were slurried and pumped into the annulus.

The paper presents a general background to the subsidence research program being undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Development in New South Wales. The results of the studies undertaken over the last ten years are summarised. The differences between these results and those obtained by the National Coal Board are discussed. The results of a study carried out on the effect of total extraction beneath a freeway in the southern coalfields are discussed in some detail. The procedures developed for the construction of a 500 mm diameter natural gas pipeline crossing a number of collieries in the northern coalfields are also outlined. The future direction of the Department's subsidence research program is discussed.

The Green River formations in the Western U.S.A. contains vast amounts of petroleum reserves in oil shale deposits. Exploitation of this petroleum reserve calls for large scale mining of the oil shale. Applicable mining methods include conventional underground mining using roan and pillar, sub-level caving and block caving; underground insitu retorting of oil shale and open pit mining. Roam and pillar mining offers one of the most economic methods of underground mining of oil shale. A 2.4 x l09 litre per year (50,000 barrels per day) of crude oil production would require a daily oil shale production of 100,000 tomes per day from underground operations. For this large production, a highly mechanized room and pillar mining muld utilize large capacity diesel equipment such as 85 tonne trucks and 8m front end loaders. The total air requirements of an oil shale mining operations can. be as high as 28443/s. Ventilation planning for such a large scale underground mining operation presents a formidable task. The major objectives of providing ventilation air to underground workings are to dilute airborne .dust and diesel fumes to harmless levels, and to insure that the mine environment is compatible with the health and safety of mine personnel. Regulation of air velocities and air temperatures is a major factor in mine environmental control. Colorado State law requires that a minimum of 0.047m3/s of fresh air be supplied for each kW of diesel power operating underground. Additionally, 0.047m3/s of fresh air must be supplied for each underground employee, and a minimum air velocity of 0.15m/s must be maintained in all working places. It is desirable to exceed this minimum velocity in order to prevent stratification of ventilation air. Moreover, Colorado law also stipulates the maximum allowable concentration of noxious gases mine air, below: ? C02 - 0.5% by volume, 5,000 ppm. ? CO - 0.005% by volume, 50 ppm. ? Oxides of Nitrogen - 0.0025% by volume, 25ppm. ? Nitrogen Dioxide 0.005% by volume, 5 ppm. This paper examines ventilation requirements for the underground mine, with respect to air quality requirements and distribution of air in mine workings in light of the above regulations. Analyses were made for sane typical mining plans to determine airflow resistance or pressure drops and fan horsepower requirements. In addition, the possible occurrence of high concentrations of toxic gases, was examined. Expected temperature levels in mine workings were approximated.

Introduction Although previous studies1,2,3 have been made, no correlations for pressure drop have been proposed. This is probably because severe particle breakage occurred and pressure drops changed substantially with time. A quantitative statement of the relationship of pressure drop to the parameters of the system is desirable for lignite since, unlike higher rank coals, lignite slurries are thixotropic. The present investigation was undertaken to quantify the pipeline behavior and required continuous monitoring of pressure drop and size distribution.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

"The paper deals with the impact of fleet imbalance on a deterministic evaluation of shovel fleet productive capacity. It shows that if the fleet imbalance is overlooked, then estimated fleet productive capacity will be overrated.The paper shows that fleet imbalance inflates utilization, and care must be taken when using such statistics which are derived from reported field-equipment-hours. It shows that the utilization must be deflated by a factor called 'balancing efficiency"" in order to estimate shovel productive capacity correctly. The paper also shows how fleet imbalance can be controlled by managing idle time or downtime in an actual operation.The technique used for measuring the balancing efficiency factor is based on statistical analysis of equipment utilization."

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had sane reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one third of the lead losses in the final tails.

Native asphalt was produced in 1977 by six companies in four States. Leading States were Texas and Utah. Output declined 39% to 1,237,000 tons valued at $18,874,000. Bituminous limestone was produced by Whites Uvalde Mines and by Uvalde Rock Asphalt Co. in Uvalde County, Tex.; by Southern Stone Co. in Colbert. Ala.; and by Barton County Rock Asphalt Co. in Barton County, Mo. Gilsonite was produced by American Gilsanite Co. in Uinta County. Utah, and by Ziegler Chemical and Mineral Corp. in Weber County. Utah. The asphalt was used for streets and roads, and for other purposes.

To more rapidly and economically prepare solutions for chemical analysis, of a wide range of ores, slags, minerals, and metals. Approach A Simple pressure-dissolution system was devised using an inexpensive, heavy wall plastic bottle containing a sample in an acid medium. Using the technique, a complex silicate sample can be dissolved in less than 1 hour. How It Works A weighed portion of a sample, ground to minus 100-mesh, is placed into a polycarbonate or polysulfone plastic bottle. A mixture of hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and hydrofluoric acid then is added. The bottle threads are wrapped with a layer of Teflon tape to prevent leakage, and the bottle cap is screwed on tightly. The sealed bottle is placed in a balling water bath. In the hot water, the plastic bottle acts as a pressure vessel to contain the pressure generated inside it. This technique should only be used by trained experienced people who are familiar with the hazards of hot acids under pressure. After being cooled in cold water, the resulting solution is brought to the final volume by adding 1.5 weight-percent boric acid solution to the bottle. The cap is replaced, and the bottle and solution is reheated. Precipitated fluorides, as well as any residue, are dissolved by the fluoride-boric acid reaction. The resulting clear solution then is suitable for spectro-photometric examination or other analysis.

Past President, Robert E. Murray, President, Western Division and Subsidiary Companies, The North American Coal Corporation, called the meeting to order. He introduced President Loren V. Linville, District Sales Manager, Industrial Products Division, Uniroyal, Inc. A biographical sketch follows: Loren V. Linville was born on December 29, 1925 on the family farm near Wiley, Colorado to Scott W. and Hazel Linville. He has one sister, a teacher in the public schools and a brother who is an optometrist in Gustine, California. Loren grew up in Lamar, Colo. graduating from Lamar High School in 1944 and spent the folllowing 2 years as a radioman in the US Navy. He graduated from Denver University in 1950 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. On September 12, 1948 he married Norma. They have 3 children, Linelle, a teacher in New Mexico, Bruce an electronic technician in Colorado Springs and Kevin at home.
