The transport of slurry within the ball mill depends on the peripheral velocity and porosity of the ball charge. Residence time distribution and mill hold up are of-ten used as indicators of the mode of transport. In this work, the transport problem is tackled via direct simulation of the three dimensional motion of the ball charge. In doing so, the following quantities are calculated: (i) ball size distribution as a function of the distance from the feed end of the mill (ii) mean peripheral and longitudinal velocity and longitudinal velocity of balls of different sizes, and (iii) the spatial distribution of porosity within the ball charge. Hence, the problem of transport is handled as a motion of part of the slurry with the ball charge and part as hydrodynamic flow through the porous structure.

The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation sys tem is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served: 1) Face Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. "Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was built from Two Harbors to the Vermilion range at Tower, a distance of 67.6 miles, in 1884, and extended to Ely, twenty-one miles east of Tower, in 1888. It was built into Duluth in 1886, and branches were extended from its main line to the Mesabi mines in 1892 and 1893. The original grades on this road are very steep, going north, and in the thirteen miles from Two Harbors to Highland there is a rise of 1,150 feet. A new line between these points has been built with an increase of three miles in distance and with maximum grades of 1 per cent. Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway. The Duluth, Mis¬sabe & Northern Railway was constructed from Stony Brook to Mountain Iron, a distance of 48.62 miles, in 1892. The Biwabik branch from Iron Junction to Biwabik, a distance of 15.54 miles, was constructed in 1892. The Superior branch from Wolf to Hibbing, a distance of 16.06 miles, was co11structed in 1893. The Alborn branch from Coleraine Junction to Coleraine, a distance of 53 miles, was constructed in 1906. The total main line mileage is 242 miles, of which 82 miles from Duluth to Hibbing is double tracked"

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of marine vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in each of these categories are not devoted wholly to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move agricultural products as well as crude minerals and mineral fertilizers, as ore/bulk/oil carriers also do. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to moving nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral and nonmineral cargoes. They include general cargo carriers, full containerships, partial containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels, such as sue, draft, crew requirements, and type of propulsion system, as well as fuel costs, have an undeniable influence on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and quality and types of material moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy. Unfortunately, comprehensive data in this regard are not available.

Tables 16 through 19 continue the series of providing the world merchant fleet distribution by type of vessel and the ranking of the major fleets by country of registry. Table 20 this year provides a summary of the world's liquid gas carrier fleet. These vessels are included in the totals given for the world's tanker fleet, but gives a breakdown demonstrating the growth of the importance of natural gas in the world's energy commodity consumption. Panama and Suez Canals Tables 21 and 22 provide the latest available information on the transit of mineral commodities through the Panama Canal, by number of vessels, direction, and the commodities transported. Although the number of vessels transiting the Panama Canal dropped slightly (0.5%) between 1989 and 1990, the total amount of cargo moved rose by 3.6% and the amount of mineral commodities moved rose by 7.2%.

The increase of nearly 1.5 % in the number of vessels between 1990 and 1991 compared with a 2.7% growth in gross tonnage and a nearly 2.3 % increase in deadweight tonnage points to an increase in the average size of vessels. Of the four categories of vessels reported, all showed increases in number and in deadweight tonnage between 1990 and 1991 except for "other," and on the gross tonnage basis, all groups registered increases. Although physical characteristics of vessels such as size, draft, crew requirements, type of propulsion system, ratio of gross tonnage to cargo tonnage, and fuel costs have undeniable influences on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and types of materials moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy, and thus have a bearing on the minerals sector of that aggregate. Virtually all industries use sulphur in some form. About half of the world's production is used in the production of fertilizers. Sulphur is produced in one form or another in over sixty countries in the world. The major producing countries, in order of importance, are: U.S.A., Canada, U.S.S.R., Poland, Japan, France, Mexico, and Spain. Canada is the largest exporter of sulphur presently supplying about 30% of the world elemental sulphur export trade. It has held this position since 1968. World sulphur resources are virtually unlimited. Future world competition will come from Iraq and other Middle East countries as well as Central and South America.

The export markets are of great importance to western Canadian sulfur producers, taking 70% of total products sold. For these marketers, Canadians have always supplied solid sulfur, first in a crushed, bulk form, and for the past several years in a slate form. Both form have proved inadequate for safety and environmental reasons, and new forms and processes have been developed by interested suppliers. The Canadian industry has evaluated these processes and ha made a determination of a desired Product specfication that will greatly enhance the acceptability of future Products from safety, environmental, and customer points of view. The new processed methods and resulting product characteristics are reviewed.

IN our never ending search for new and better ways of underground mining, we find that transportation has had its share of new ideas in the past few years. The old and still effective method of track haulage has had some competition from rubber tired cars and belt conveyors, each of which has its own safety hazards which demand close scrutiny in any safety study. The use of shuttle cars, in particular, has introduced clearance hazards caused by the absence of the more or less positive guides formed by the rails of a track sys¬tem; likewise the requirement of greater clearance tends to increase roof hazards which we all know to be great enough with the best of methods. However, the subject of transportation hazards is too broad to be covered entirely in one paper, so I will confine myself to track methods which carry the preponderance of underground tonnage. I am quite sure that to this group it is an evident fact that haulage accidents are of major importance. However, to stress the point, it may be well to look at a few figures. "I AM very happy to have this opportunity of speaking to the Montreal Branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.I have selected as the subject of my remarks transportation in that area which is at present our only source of uranium -Northwest Canada. Considering the widespread interest in atomic energy, the end-product of uranium, it may be wondered why I have not chosen to speak of a more spectacular aspect of the development. I hope it will be evident from what I have to say that transportation plays a very dominant role in our effort to maintain a continuing supply from Eldorado's producing property at Port Radium on Great Bear lake and from its coming producer at Beaver lodge Lake in Northwest Saskatchewan. Moreover, transportation has such a bearing on the entire mineral development of the Northwest that it cannot help but be of concern to an organization of this kind. Finally, the transportation problem, of which I shall try to tell you something, is quite unique and the story of its solution or partial solution is, I believe, an interesting one.Transportation experience on this continent indicates that the cheapest method of moving freight is still by water -with •rail, highway, and air transportation following, and in that order •of economic significance. Excluding rail transportation, since the area has as yet no railway lines, this order also applies in the Northwest. I shall direct my remarks to the two kinds of transportation which serve our uranium producers -water and air."

An accepted statement of fact is that, next to agriculture, transportation is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States have greatly contributed to our nation's growth and prosperity. The objective here is to make the reader aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents, and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, and covered wagons. There is much more. Corning Inc. Corning Glass Works is a worldwide organization with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It supplies more than 60,000 different products a year to some 47,000 customer firms and millions of individual consumers. Corning operates 32 of its own plants worldwide and is also an investor with a 50-50 or minority position in 24 affiliated companies in 11 countries. Corning competes in four broad business categories: • specialty glass and ceramics; • consumer housewares; • laboratory sciences; and • telecommunications Binding these four sectors together is the glue of technology. Coming's research laboratory, established in 1908, was one of the first in American industry. That early commitment to research has never wavered. Today, Corning spends annually on research and devel¬opment, as a percentage of sales, at double the average rate for all manufacturing industry in the US. Some 1500 scientists, engineers, and support personnel are now employed at the company's research and development centers in the US, Japan, and France. Petalite background A family of materials melted conventionally as a glass, then converted by special processing to a ceramic was invented in 1957. One of the basic minerals in this glass ceramic product is petalite. Petalite is a monoclinic mineral with a framework silicate structure and a low iron content, about 0.06% Fe2O3. Petalite is found in very few places throughout the world and no commercial petalite deposit has been found in the United States. Sizable deposits occur in Zimbabwe, Southwest Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. Coming's purchasing and geology departments located a source of petalite with proven reserves in what was then known as Rhodesia. The supplier was Bikita Minerals. The relationship with Bikita was one in which Bikita supplied bulk ore that Corning processed into a finished material at its US facility. This bulk ore method of shipment resulted in high losses through contamination and processing. It also caused tank upsets at the Corning plant because of iron contamination picked up through the numerous handlings of this product in bulk. The relationship with Bikita continued until 1965 when the white political leadership of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. This led to the imposition of international sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 1980 and the relationship with Bikita was reestablished in 1983.

The transport of large boulders in a furrow from a mining area to a nearby pond was considered. The furrow is filled with a mixture of water and soil particles flowing down to the pond at high velocity. Due to operating constraints, the slope of the furrow is reduced progressively. A relationship is derived, relating the slope of the furrow and the composition of the fluid to the maximum size and shape of the transported boulders. The characteristics of the boulders carried all the way down to the pond may then be determined.

Introduction The importance of coal in our economy is well established, but it may not .be so generally realized how important a part it plays in our daily life. Select a product - any product - and, if it is made in America, bituminous coal has touched it first. Everywhere we will find coal, derivatives of coal, or functions made possible by coal. Apart from the well known major uses of coal for domestic purposes, coking, utilities, railways, and manufacture of steel and cement, there are over 200,000 products derived from coal, from lipstick colours to nylon products and perfumes. An item of interest is the recent action of the Canadian Government in voting $90,000 for development of coal deposits in Yukon Territory to make coal available to the settlers in that area. The value of this move, in case of some emergency, is very evident. Coal in its several stages of formation as peat, lignite, sub-bituminous, bituminous, semi-bituminous, semi-anthracite, and anthracite, has been used for centuries. Coal, as such, was not very well known to the ancients. First reference to "magic stone', or coal, was in 371 BC by Theophrastus, a pupil of Aristotle. This substance was said to burn like wood coal or charcoal and was used by the smiths. The first record we have in modern times was in 852 AD, when sea coal was gathered by the cowled monks of Durham, in Britain, and even at that time a major problem was transportation. Our first record of coal in this continent was near Richmond, Virginia, in 1700. Commercial mining was not under way, however, until 1750. The anthracite fields (presumably in Pennsylvania) were opened in 1793. Even so, there was no extensive mining until about the year 1820. The famous Pocahontas coalfields were opened in 1883. The earliest record of coal mining in Canada is about 1746.
