The enthusiasm with which individuals have participated in mineral exploration in the development of this country testifies to the fact that there was once a very real probability of making a worthwhile discovery. Over the years, the discovery and subsequent exploitation of the accessible ore deposits have made the finding of new deposits progressively more difficult. Present day mineral exploration has evolved from the lone prospector with the grubstaker behind him to a very costly and complex business, involving large sums of money and a staff of experts in the fields of exploration technology. Exploration today must be carried out on a large scale to be profitable. With the involvement of large amounts of capital, there has been a good deal of interest in methods of optimization of the allocation of the resources of a firm 'engaged in mineral exploration. As a step toward this, mathematical models have been formulated which are designed to quantify those variables of mineral exploration in such a manner that they can be integrated with all phases of the firms operations so as to optimize its profit objective or more simply, to make exploration more efficient and effective.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. INTRODUCTION IN June, 1911, the writer spent a few days in studying the economic geology of the vicinity of Park City. During this rather hurried visit a number of specimens of ore were collected, which have since been examined. The results of these investigations show that bournonite (PbCuSbS3) is present in the ores in greater or less quantity. This fact has never before been reported, as far as can be learned. The failure to recognize this mineral is due to its similarity to tetrahedrite, with which it has probably been confused during a long period of years. Jamesonite (Pb2Sb2S5) has been reported from the region in a rather doubtful manner, but the writer has seen it in notable amounts from several mines, and can offer the first analysis of this mineral from the district. Calamine (H2Zn2SiO6) was found at one mine and has never been recognized and reported from the district.

I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTIONS APPEARANCE, AND RELATIONS MINING in Butte has seldom encountered covellite in commercial quantities. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,1 it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. EAKLE, Berkeley, Cal.-At the old Morning Star mine in Alpine County, where large masses of enargite were found some years ago, I looked particularly for evidences of replacement of pyrite by the enargite. While I have not made a particular study of any of the specimens, I judge that the pyrite and enargite were precipitated together. They were both primarily in those rocks. Of course, by using Mr. Graton's method of determination we might possibly find a situation somewhat different, but I should say that the enargite is not replacing the pyrite, but was simply precipitated at the same time. The bodies occurred there within 50 ft. of the surface, so it is probably not a case of secondary enrichment. H. W. TOLMAN, Stanford University, Cal.-You can find practically all the evidences we have discovered in the microscopic study of ores. You can find all stages in the process of replacement of earlier minerals, especially bornite, by chalcocite, from a stage, in which the process has but just started with only occasional fragments of chalcocite set in bornite, to a stage where remnants of bornite are set in chalcocite. The replacement may take place along the cleavage lines or along the crystallographic directions of the earlier mineral, or it may take place irregularly. In one type of replacement you may find in one spot a few cross-cutting veins, and in another spot the latter may be so enlarged that there remain only a few individual specks of the replaced mineral.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

Gold in the stibnite veins of Costerfield, Victoria, was described in 1922 1, prior to any mineragraphic examination, as (a) free yellow gold (b) free rusty gold and (c) combined gold. The free yellow gold occurs in quartz and will amalgamate with mercury. The free gold of dull, rusty or copper-red colour occurs in massive stibnite and has been stated to resist amalgamation with mercury. The dull colour is only skin deep and the colour is bright when the rusty gold is scratched. The appearance of the rusty gold is spongy or cellular and it generally occurs near small cavities in the stibnite. The suggestion that the cellular character indicated the removal of a certain amount of stibnite leaving a residue of se.condary gold cannot be sustained.It now appears probable that the rusty gold is formed by the primary dissociation of a gold antimonide and is distinct in origin from the normal yellow gold which is deposited with quartz or stibnite from auriferous mineral solutions.The combined gold referred to in the earlier paper was the gold contained in the stibnite as revealed by assay. Such gold was at first thought to be either dissolved in the stibnite or else present as free interstitial particles too minute for observation in transmitted light in thin sections.Subsequent examination of numerous polished,surfaces disclosed the small particles of gold occurring in the grain boundaries in aggregates of fine grained stibnite 2. The assumption that all the gold in the stibnite, as revealed by assay, occurred in this way is now known to be incorrect, because limited amounts of a gold antimonide have been found in the veins.

Ore samples from the South, Central and North ore-bodies of the King Cassilis Mine, near Omeo, Victoria, were broken and transported to Melbourne for experimental metallurgical treatment. A microscopical examination of individual unoxidised specimens, selected from these samples, was undertaken in order to thro'w as much light as possible on the occurrence of the gold which forms the valuable economic mineral in the ore.The following descriptions are the outcome' of this examination and show that very minute particles of free gold are mechanically associated with the sulphides. While the gold may be separated from the transparent gangue minerals by the flotation of the sulphides, the, actual size of the particles indicates that it is impossible to separate all the gold from the sulphides by grinding the ore to pass through a screen of 200 mesh in which the average width of the holes is 0.063 mm. The smelting of the Broken Hill lead concentrates at the Broken Hill Asso,ciated Smelters produced, among other products, approximately 4,900 ounces of gold and 8,800,000 ounces of silver during the year ending June 30th, 1938. The following table shows the actual amounts of gold per ton of lead concentrate produced during this period at the important mines. The total gold in the period is calculated from the number of tons of lead concentrates produced, and by comparison with the production' of silver, shows thatthere is no constant relation between the amounts of gold and silver.The fact that no gold is seen during milling, even when gravity concentrating tables are employed, signifies that the gold does not occur as occasional coarse particles.Further, as the values increase considerably in the flotation slime, it can be inferred that the gold occurs as minute inclusions in one or more of the minerals in the lead concentrates.The four most abundant minerals in the lead concentrate are galena, zinc blende, chalcopyrite, and...

FOR many years there have been occasional reports of the discovery of gold from a belt of the coast country of Texas which is underlain by deposits belonging to the lower Eocene. For the most part they have been treated as newspaper reports and no examination or record of them has been made. Among such, it may be mentioned that in 1896 there was a flurry over reported gold-discoveries -west of Luling and elsewhere in this belt, and in 1903 some prospect-shafts were sunk on the Gonzales branch of the Galveston, Houston & San Antonio railway, 3 miles below Harwood. During 1912, further discoveries have again brought the matter to our attention, and it may be of interest to record the facts as we have found them. Some years ago specimens were sent me, which were said to have been taken from certain beds on Gazley creek, and concentrated by washing in it rocker. In them were several particles of gold sufficiently large to be visible to the eye. Under the microscope they showed to be, with few, exceptions, sharp cornered, and not rounded as is usual with placer-gold. They were not filings, however, but their sharpness seemed rather to be due to a recent freeing from their matrix. One or two grains were rusty, and one copper-hued, but the most of them were tolerably bright. On examining the material of the samples small grains or fragments were found, of a yellowish brown color, which seemed to be of a finely-granular structure-possibly a sandstone. In these fragments I found particles of gold, one of them being large enough to be visible without a lens. Gazley creek empties into the Colorado river just north of Smithville, and for a few miles north of that place its banks show, beneath the deposits of more recent materials, the sands and clays of the Lignitic division of the Eocene, with lignite, shells of iron, etc.

"Abstract - Gold-bearing quartz reefs commonly show extremely erratic and unpredictable grade variation, although gross geological continuity may be good. This type of variation is often described as being nuggety or having a high nugget effect and can be measured quantitatively using the semivariogram. Understanding of geological features such as reef texture and structure will provide improved models for the interpretation of assay data, drill core descriptions, etc. In this paper, a case study from the quartz-hosted gold occurrences in the Gwynfynydd mine, United Kingdom, is described. The work provides a starting point for models of lateral variation and demonstrates the types of structural and textural features that may be sought to give clues to the prediction of gold distribution in similar deposits. Gold deposition at Gwynfynydd is primarily associated with the reef footwall. The host veins form a discrete group of structures that may have been emplaced early in the sequence of quartz veins forming the reef. This potentially exposes them to a maximum number of dissection events during repeat dilations of the lode. Gold was deposited in the local porosity at extreme concentrations, equivalent to kg/t grades, when the host fissure had become filled with a porous framework of crystalline quartz and sulfides. Distribution of porosity varied laterally along the vein as the result of the formation of clump-like growths of minerals from the vein walls. The growth style is relevant to the distribution of gold although it may not be relevant to the occurrence of gold in a particular vein. The preservation of pores with some connectivity late in the vein fill sequence may be important in permitting continued but slow fluid flows. This facilitates effective fluid reaction with wall rock-derived methane, thus changing the relative rates of gold and quartz deposition in favor of gold. The textural studies explain the first-order control of nugget distribution at Gwynfynydd but do not allow for prediction and optimization of the resource estimation process. This is principally because of the very low geological continuity and poor predictability of the high-grade pockets. Nonetheless, the work does provide a clear geological explanation for the erratic nature of the gold. It indicates textures and structures that can be used to determine geological continuity of the goldbearing elements within the gross reef envelope."

"THE YEAR 1959 appeared to be a good one in which to attempt a summary of progress in the location and study of sulphide deposits in Canada because a temporary surplus of metals caused prices to fall and many geologists who had been working like beavers were suddenly not so hard pressed. So it was •decided to arrange a Symposium. The response to the call for contributions was excellent and the result is the interesting collection of papers that follow.Activity in the search for massive sulphide deposits has never been as intense as in Canada since 1954. That was the year when the airborne electro-magnetometer first became generally available on a contract basis. These instruments work best on massive sulphide bodies, as do most of the ground electrical survey devices, so much of the new information relates to these. It was decided, therefore, to focus attention in the preparation of symposium papers on such masses. This served also to keep the survey within reasonable limits."

SULPHIDE ore-bodies of more or less lenticular shape occurring in metamorphic crystalline schists, gneisses, and. slates, and conforming closely in strike and usually in dip to the inclosing rock, have been recognized and described along the, Atlantic seaboard from Quebec to Alabama. The ore-bodies do not entirely conform, in all cases, to the structure of the inclosing schists, but they sometimes cut across the foliation in dip, though conforming more closely with the direction of strike. In composition the principal sulphide mineral is usually pyrite or pyrrhotite; or both, accompanied by copper, frequently gold, and almost always some sphalerite and galenite. Other. metallic ores are, so far as these sulphide bodies have been investigated, less common; silver is not uncommon, and in some of the pyrrhotite masses nickel is present in quantity sufficient to be commercially valuable. Cobalt frequently accompanies .the nickel, usually in smaller amount, and the two vary much in relative proportion. Quartz and calcite are probably the most common of the, non-metallic minerals. A number of silicate minerals are frequent representatives in one place or another; garnet, amphibole, biotite, pyroxene, zoisite and others. The sulphide bodies of Virginia, comprising both pyrite and pyrrhotite, are among the most extensive along the Atlantic seaboard. Among the pyrite bodies may be mentioned the well-known and extensively worked mines of Louisa and Prince William, counties, located on' the main pyrite belt (A, Fig. 1) of the middle and northern, eastern Piedmont region in Virginia, and among the pyrrhotite bodies is the famous " Great Gossan Lead "(B, Fig. 1) of the Floyd-Carroll-Graysou coun-

THE occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:¬ I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. IV. They have been found in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. I. BOULDERS AND PEBBLES WHICH HAVE BEEN WASHED IN FROM THE SURFACE, OR FROM AN UPPER PORTION OF THE VEIN. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at onetime com¬municated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoët, in France. The characterisation of high-P iron ores by field emission gun electron probe microanalyser (FEGEPMA) was carried out to determine elemental associations in iron oxides sensus lato and, using this knowledge, to speculate on possible P incorporation mechanisms in goethite. Quantitative data was collected from two goethite-rich bulk ores and results showed that in both samples goethite was the main repository for phosphorus. The P-rich goethite also contained elevated levels of both aluminium and silicon.To understand the mechanism of P incorporation in goethite, high-P grains were located by coarse mapping of polished blocks with the FEG-EPMA. Analysis of element distribution maps collected on the P-rich grains showed that low-P regions within grains were typically associated with low-Al and high-Si, whereas high-P regions were associated with high-Al and low-Si. Based on follow-up quantitative analyses, a coupled substitution mechanism for phosphorus incorporation within goethite was proposed: 2Si4+ = 1P5+ + 1Al3+. Additional quantitative analyses on further examples indicated the mechanism was only valid for Si contents in goethite of <1 wt per cent.Preliminary transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies confirmed the presence of P, Al and Si in goethite.

I. INTRODUCTION. IN the summer of 1908, R. B. Cochran, Superintendent of the Compania Metalurgica Mexicana at Sierra Mojada, Mexico, presented to the Department of Geology and Mineralogy at Case School of Applied Science an interesting series of silver-, copper-, and lead-ores from the Veta Rica mine. These ores contained several interesting minerals which were associated in a somewhat peculiar manner, so that I was impelled to make a closer study of their occurrence. The investigation has brought out several new facts concerning the geology of the district and the geological occurrence of the ores, and therefore has seemed worthy of record. Two papers have been published previously about the region, one by Chism1 in 1887, and the other by Malcolmson2 in 1902. These articles, however, treat of the district more from the stand-point of the metallurgist and mining engineer, and not much attention is devoted to its mineralogy and economic geology. II. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF THE DISTRICT. The Sierra Mojada is situated in the extreme western part of the State of Coahuila, near the Chihuahua boundary. It is reached best via the Mexican Central railroad from El Paso, Tex., to Escalon, Chihuahua, a distance of 494 miles. From this point, a branch line, the Mexican Northern railroad, runs 78 miles in a NE. direction to the mines, which are its northern terminus. THE important investigations of Dr. G. F. Becker at Steamboat Springs, Nev., in 1885, aided by the analytical work of W. H. Melville, established the fact that sulphides were being deposited at the surface by hot ascending waters.1 Steamboat Springs is situated near the eastern base of the escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, six miles distant from the Comstock lode. In a region of former volcanic activity, hot springs with a temperature of about 80° C. break forth through a fissure in granodiorite, and at the base of a basaltic bluff the waters have deposited a large amount of siliceous and calcareous sinter, some of which is colored red by antimony sulphide. The sinter from one of the springs was analyzed by Mr. Melville,2 and his results, re-calculated to grams per kilogram, showed [ ] The relative quantities of antimonious and arsenious sulphides are not given in the above analysis, but I believe that the former greatly predominated. The water of one of the springs was also analyzed by Melville and the re-calculation of this analysis to salts that were possibly present is given in Table I.

This collection was supplemented by a number of small specimens, including the rare copper telluride, which were collected and preseryed from the Kalgurli mine by Mr. A. E. Paton, and also by a few miscellaneous specimens from the collection o{ Mr. S. F. C. Cook, of the Palace Hotel, Kalgoorlie.An extensive knowledge of the rare tellurium-bearing minerals was compiled during the last century from occurrences in Transylvania and Colorado. The recognition of different species has been based on chemical analyses and crystallographic measurements. In a few species there has been an absence of crystalline form, and these, together with the discoveries in this century of rickardite and "weissite" muthmannite and empressite, have depended chiefly on the chemical analysis for identification. On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.

On the other hand, the crystalline form of nagyagite and stiitzite has been described in detail, while their precise chemical formulae were doubtfully defined.The announcement of the occurrence of tellurides at Kalgoorlie by A G Holroyd in the Kalgoorlie Mine on 29 May 1896, followed by their discovery in comparative abundance, stimulated the further study of these minerals. In this locality there is a general absence of well-formed crystals, and the knowledge gained has been confined to the record and description of previously known, but exceedingly rare, species.No new species has been recorded, but the intimate association of various species resulted in early description of two supposedly new species, kalgoorlite and coolgardite. These have been discredited since the investigation by L J Spencer in 1903, based on a collection of specimens donated to the British Museum.Spencer's list of species at Kalgoorlie comprises calaverite, sylvanite (or krennnerite), petzite, coloradoite, 'and altaite, and does not include hessite, previously mentioned by Krusch. In 1912 melonite and a copper telluride were added by J A Thomson and the presence of hessite confirmed. In 1912 there also appeared a full and detailed account by E S Simpson on behalf of the WA Geological Survey, which embraced his earlier notes on the tellurides, and which represents the state of our knowledge of the Kalgoorlie minerals, practically as far as can be attained without the use of the reflecting microscope.The position has been stationary for about 18 years, and it was thought. that the best use to which the present collection of tellurides could be devoted was an attempt by mineragraphic methods to study the mineral relationships, not only of the tellurides among themselves, but also to gold and other associated minerals. The precise mineral content and relationships become a factor of added importance with the development of flotation methods of treatment at Kalgoorlie.Moreover, the study would supplement the description of the ore deposits of the Boulder Belt that has recently been published.

Gold recovered on the strikes at the Central Norseman mill, Norseman, Western Australia, has an approximate assay fineness of 850. Bullion recovered from the cyanide plant at the mine is of much lower value, and occasionally its assay fineness has been as low as 250. This indicates either that the fine gold particles in the ore consist of an alloy richer in silver than the coarse particles or else that a silver mineral, as well as the gold, is dissolved by the cyanide solutions.It had been observed at the mine that the amount of silver in the bullion appeared to increase when galena appeared to be more abundant in the stoped ore. Interest was, therefore, attached to the possible occurrence of a silver mineral associated with galena and, at the same time, soluble in cyanide.Four specimens of ore from different horizons in the mine were collected by the mine staff for examination as to whether any marked difference in the fineness of gold was apparent on a polished surface and for determination of the silver minerals. As the Norseman ore-body is a quartz reef containing a very small percentage of sulphide, the specimens were selected either because they cont;:lined free gold or because they were, relatively rich in sulphides. They were obtained from the following localities at the Phoenix shaft.1. Level 16, section 28.2. Level 16, section 31.3. Level 8, section 31.4. Level 14, section 38.Specimens Nos. 1 and 2 were thus obtained from different positions at the same mining horizon, while specimens Nos 2 and 3 were obtained from different levels in the same vertical section of the mine.All the specimens consist of quartz characterized by thin, discontinuous seams of sericite and the presence of a little ankerite. Gold and sulphides tend to be localized along these seams, but particles of gold and sulphides are also scattered throughout areas of white quartz. This scattered distribution of the sulphides in relatively wide areas of quartz has involved the preparation of two or more polished sections from each specimen.The outcome of the microscopical examination of these specimens has been to determine that there is no appreciable variation in the colour of the polished particles of gold and, therefore, no marked difference in the amount of silver alloyed with the coarse and fine particles. The presence of small quantities of the tellurides sylvanite, hessite and altaite has been revealed, and found to vary in abundance with the abundance of galena.
