I. INTRODUCTORY. THE plans for the investigation of fuels and structural materials now being conducted by the Technologic Branch of the United States Geological Survey were, before being decided upon by the Director of the Survey, submitted for consideration to the National Advisory Board, upon which there are nine representatives from the membership of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, viz.: Messrs. John Hays Hammond, Robert W. Hunt, B. F. Bush, and E. V. d'Invilliers (representing the Institute); Messrs. Julian Kennedy and C. S. Robinson (representing the Iron and Steel Institute); Dr. Charles B. Dudley (representing the American Society for Testing Materials); Mr. F. H. Newell (representing the U. S. Reclamation Service); and Dr. Richard Moldenke (representing the American Foundrymen's Association). It seems fitting, therefore, that a report of these investigations of the past three years should be submitted to the Institute for publication in its Transactions. The above, together with other representatives of the national engineering societies and allied organizations, were invited by President Roosevelt to serve, along with the Chiefs of the several Government Bureaus who have charge of public works and large. fuel purchases, on the National Advisory Board to give advice concerning these investigations. The appointment of this National Board grew out of a wish on the part of the President, the Secretary of the Interior, and the Director of the Geological Survey not only that the appropriations for these investigations be expended in a manner most beneficial to the several branches of the government

One normally does not find sudden and dramatic changes in the investment climate, barring the unexpected outbreak of-wars or revolutions. Asia has seen a fair amount of military action and revolt during the past year, not all of it unexpected There was the fighting in Laos, which resulted in the as yet unconcluded negotiations which will probably lead to the establishment of a neutralist regime. In April of 1961 another revolution occurred in South Korea, and the elected government was replaced by a military dictatorship.. Communist guerrilla activity in South Vietnam was stepped up, and uncertainty about the future of that area increased. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan became more strained, and while no fighting has broken out, diplomatic relations between the two countries were broken off. India was both the victim of further incursions of her territory by communist China and the perpetrator of the forcible seizure of territory from Portugal. Indonesia has been making preparations for an armed attack on the Dutch in New Guinea.

The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for 'tailoring' the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.

The desire for minimising impacts of mining activities on the environment, and in particular, water resources; is usually tempered by the costs and practicalities of implementing æbest practiceÆ measures. This paper briefly discusses the theoretical and practical options for water management for typical mines and quarries in a range of environments to assess if adverse impacts can be completely eliminated or at least be perceived as doing so. The regulatory requirements for water resources management are usually an essential part of mine planning and operations that can be a primary focus for all stakeholders. As such they can distract attention from implementing best practice in water management for the benefit of the environment and the community for altruistic reasons that have a long-term benefit for the mining industry as a whole. Cost-effective options for supply, demand and quality management of water that comply with basic regulatory requirements are readily available. Making a mine æinvisibleÆ in a practical sense, in terms of impacts on water resources would require eliminating potentially contaminated discharges, minimising demand, maximising reuse and recycling and putting back a healthy proportion of the clean water that is taken out of the natural environment for use in mine operations. This may sound simple enough and there are many well-known standard approaches that are usually applied. But which are the most effective, and who benefits? New approaches to water management are becoming more affordable and can benefit the bottom line as well as the environment, but can they make a mine ædisappearÆ? The perception of whether a mine is æinvisibleÆ in terms of its impacts on water resources is as important as the actions taken to try to achieve such an objective. The viewpoints and thresholds of perceptions of the different stakeholders are therefore relevant to how ævisibleÆ mining activities become.

The effects of nitrogen alloying on the corrosion properties of austenitic stainless steels were investigated by a combination of potentio-dynamic and surface analysis techniques. The results indicate that nitrogen undergoes the phenomenon of anodic segregation, affecting both general and localized corrosion resistance. Nitrogen alloying is found to be beneficial to general corrosion resistance in a de-aerated sulphuric acid solution, but to be detrimental in an aerated solution of sulphuric acid This phenomenon is explained in terms of an ammonium-ion polarization effect. Localized corrosion resistance is found to improve dramatically as a result of nitrogen alloying, the nitrogen improving the formation, maintenance, and stability of the passive film in environments that promote pitting various theories that have been proposed to account for these phenomena are discussed.

In the solvent extraction -electrowinning recovery of copper from oxide or sulfide ores there is a continuous transfer of iron and other impurities from the primary leach solution to the copper electrowinning electrolyte via chemical transfer or mechanical entrainment. Iron is the principal impurity that has to be controlled in the electrolyte by a "bleeding" of the electrowinning solution. This bleeding transfers copper and sulfuric acid back to the primary leach circuit along with the iron. Copper is recovered via the solvent extraction process and generally the sulfuric acid is used as a reagent in leaching. Unfortunately, cobalt, which is added to the electrowinning solution to modify the anodic process, is irreversibly lost through the bleeding operation. This cobalt loss represents a significant operating cost to SX-EW copper producers. DiphonixTM ion exchange resin contains diphosphonic acid and sulfonic acid functional groups on a polystyrene-divinyl benzene matrix. This resin has been found to strongly and selectively extract ferric ion from copper sulfate -sulfuric acid solutions containing cobalt. Thus, an ion exchange process using DiphonixTM resin for the control of iron has been developed to replace the conventional bleed stream process. The new process minimizes the loss of cobalt from the electrowinning circuit and strips the iron into a sulfate based solution suitable for leach solution makeup. In addition, this process can effect a lowering of the total iron concentration in the electrolyte circuit with an associated increase in current efficiency. In this paper, data on the loading and elution of iron are presented. Laboratory and pilot scale data will be discussed along with information on process design and comparative economics.

From the time of its emergence as an independent state until the late 1950's, the Republic of Ireland suffered from chronic unemployment, the lowest living standard in Northern Europe, and-most serious of all-an aggravated emigration problem which drained off most of its talented young people. In 1958, however, there was a drastic legislative reaction to these problems, and this in turn ignited the current mining boom in Ireland. Paving the Way to Prosperity In order to reverse the tide of emigration, the Irish government now realized, challenging domestic employment opportunities had to be increased and living standards had to be raised. It was also apparent that future industrial and economic growth in Ireland had to be based on producing goods for export. The home market could not sustain large-scale expansion, and consequently Ireland's chronic balance-of-payments deficit could best be minimized by producing export goods. These considerations, together with the limited amount of accumulated wealth in Ireland, combined to set the objectives of the country's First Program for Economic Expansion in 1958. The general objectives of this program were (1) to stimulate all segments of the economy, (2) to develop foreign trade and (3) to attract foreign capital.

DESPITE the confusion resulting from the depression and the beginnings of recovery, important progress in all branches of iron and steel metallurgy has been accomplished during the year 1933. Research work has been intensive and highly technical, with increasing attention paid to fundamentals. Plant application of research developments has been rapid. Highly specialized laboratory methods were used for the study of iron-ore concentration methods. More attention has been given by the blast-furnace operator to the sizing of ore and the elimination of fines from the charge by the use of sinter. Combustion in the open-hearth has been placed under better control and the insulation of open-hearth furnaces has spread rapidly, with resultant higher fuel efficiency and better control of the melting and refining operations. Control of iron oxide content in the slag and the determination of iron oxide and other inclusions in steel received great attention during the year.

The Arab community is formed by around twenty countries in Africa and Asia, linked basically by a common language-Arabic - and the same religion, the muslim. They jointly occupy around 12 million square kilometers with a total population of around 140 million people. Nevertheless, these nations differ widely in their geographic area and population. Thus, while Egypt has a territory of over a million square kilometers and a population of nearly 40 million people, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have, among the three of them, less than 30, 000 square kilometers and a million inhabitants. The per capita income also vary greatly, depending on whether they are oil producing countries or not. Generally speaking, it can be said that these countries economies have been based on oil or agriculture and that in these last years, they have been making serious efforts to increase their degree of industrialization and have greatly improved their infrastructure. This trend has resulted in the development of the iron and steel industry, which is still in a stage of primary development.

THE blast furnace is the base of the steel industry, since there is no commercially practical way of converting iron ore directly into steel. In three hundred years, the blast furnace has developed from a small unit using charcoal as fuel and producing about one ton of iron in twenty-four hours to a furnace making upwards of 1,500 tons a day. The principle of the blast furnace is briefly this: A descending column of stock, consisting of ore, fuel, and flux, is met by an ascending stream of gases, consisting in part of gases formed by the combustion of the fuel and in part of pre-heated air which is blown into the lower part of the furnace. The flux combines with the impurities in the ore and the ash in the fuel to form slag, which is drawn off as liquid.

The concept of a characteristic reaction gas temperature (CRGT) is introduced and the two reactors are compared and contrasted using some recent process developments with an aim to develop a platform for further synergistic innovations.

In 1979, John Peacey and William (Bill) Davenport published The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice billed as "An up to date and comprehensive treatment of blast furnaces from fundamental principles to modern operations" (back cover). As a 1979 graduate of McGill University’s Metallurgical Engineering program, I belonged to the last "beta" student group which completed the prescribed blast furnace course work before The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published. As my career developed, I become an international blast furnace consultant and have worked with blast furnace operators and raw material suppliers on 5 continents. The blast furnace is the dominate iron making process responsible for 70% of global steel production. Blast furnace engineers have implemented many improvements by manipulating the blast furnace process metallurgy using the principles presented by Peacey and Davenport to reduce coke consumption and increase oxygen usage and blast furnace productivity. This paper briefly summarizes some key principles presented by Peacey and Davenport (1979), describes process improvements made by blast furnace operators over the 35 years since The Iron Blast Furnace Theory and Practice was published and outlines important future developments in blast furnace technology.

The Pilbara region of Western Australia is well known for its abundant exports of hematite-goethite deposits, which have been mined and exported since the 1960s. Magnetite has also been mined in Australia throughout this period, although historically of much lower production volumes (WA Iron Ore profile, 2016). Magnetite offers a source supply of material >66 per cent iron grade product, which is used as premium feed (predominantly pellets) to blast furnaces or specialised steel mills.The Iron Bridge project area contains outcropping magnetite and hematite banded iron formation (BIF), which within the region was recognised as having potential to host economic mineralisation during the 1960s. Development within the project area, however, did not commence until Fortescue Metals Group acquired the tenements based on a 2004 agreement, formed a joint venture with interested groups and then initiated an assessment for magnetite (rather than hematite) mining potential. The combined deposits now have an identified large mineral resource inventory, with test work demonstrating they are able to produce a magnetite concentrate of greater than 66 per cent Fe over an extended mine life. This concentrate would be suitable for forming pellets or feed for direct reduced iron products.The deposits form a singular orebody, approximately 12 km in length by 1 km in width and extending to depths beyond 600 m. The four main deposits are geographically separate and have subtle mineralogical differences, thought driven by the degree of deformation and alteration within each area.Definition of the stratigraphy, structure and key mineralogy of the deposits has been carried out through several stages of exploration and project development. This has also included recent mining and processing of more than 1 Mt of feed material to an on-site processing facility. This demonstrated at a production scale that dry plus wet processing techniques can efficiently separate the magnetite from the gangue minerals to form a suitable (marketable) product.Geometallurgical classification of the host stratigraphy has been carried out from analysing the high volume of quantitative data available for this deposit. This has allowed definition of mappable units within the fresh BIF to be used as a driver in mine scheduling, delivering optimal feed to the processing plant.Construction of mine and processing facilities is expected to commence once all technical risks have been addressed, market conditions are deemed appropriate and approval is given by the joint venture partners.CITATION:Simpson, C, 2017. Introduction To the miner, as well as to the geologist, the eastern part of Cuba is a most interesting region. Here we find, in contrast to the moderate relief predominating elsewhere in the island, an imposing mountain range, the Sierra Maestra, extending east and west parallel to the coast, its precipitous front facing the blue Caribbean Sea.. In a geological sense this range is largely an unknown land, the only well-explored region being that in the vicinity of Santiago. The range also contains the most important mineral deposits of the island. They comprise, first, a series of iron deposits yielding a partly hematitized magnetite with low content of phosphorus; second, a remarkable copper-bearing vein at El Cobre; and third, various manganese deposits. Probably more deposits will be found, for the larger and western part of the range is as yet little explored and its slopes are covered by a thick tropical jungle. The following notes are based on a short visit by the senior author in January and February of 1914 to the mines at Daiquiri, El Cobre, and Mayari. For many courtesies and great assistance he is deeply obliged to Charles F. Rand, President of the Spanish-American Iron Co.; to George W. Pfeiffer, General Manager, and to the several members of his staff.

Discussion of the paper of WALDEMAR LINDGREN and CLYDE P. Ross, presented at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 106, October, 1915, pp. 2171 to 2190. WALDEMAR LINDGREN, Boston, Mass.-I happened to go down to Cuba rather unexpectedly in the winter of 1914, and spent a few very interesting days at Daiquiri and Mayari. To C. F. Rand and his associates I am greatly indebted for permission to visit the mines and for many courtesies received. A few months after that, I met Professor Kemp who informed me that he had just returned from a geological study of Daiquiri. We talked over what to do in a case like that. We both liked to publish our opinions, and so finally agreed to write two papers entirely separately, I not knowing any of Professor Kemp's conclusions,1 and vice versa. We were rather interested in seeing what would happen. Of course, as might be expected, we disagreed on some points; not, of course, that we ordinarily disagree, but simply because when two men work in the same field and with different ideas, probably they are apt to vary slightly in their conclusions. Some years ago A. C. Spencer went down there for the military interim government and published the results of his study. His view of the origin of the deposit differed from that of Professor Kemp and from mine. So here are three different results obtained by three different geologists. Such differences in opinion on obscure subjects sometimes tend to bring geology into disrepute. It is perhaps not surprising that different opinions have been expressed, for this occurrence of iron ore is one of the most difficult to explain that I have ever seen. MAX ROESLER, Great Neck, L. I.-I had the opportunity this summer of spending about two months down at the Juragua deposits, and studied them with the idea of writing a paper on them, which I hope will come out later. The interpretation of the occurrence at Ocania Mine is the thing which particularly struck me, in the last paper. At the Ocania Mine we may have these large blocks of limestone which have been utterly and entirely altered, to a remarkable extent.
