With the occurrences of serious mill structural failures on both ball and primary mills, the mining industry has entered the era of detailed fabrication specifications. Such specifications, however, have been developed as individual entities, often by people not related to the mill design function. Therefore, there has been no effort to relate mill failure or safety to the existence or elimination of specific fabrication flaws; that is, no cause-effect failure relationships have been developed. The omission of this step produces a specification which can be termed uneconomical at best. The present paper attempts to fill this void, by reviewing methods for design consideration of flawed structures, and describing experimental tests used to tie such data to a meaningful quality assurance program in fabrication.

"Gibraltar Mines is located on the western slope of Granite Mountain, 230 air miles north of Vancouver, B.C. and 38 miles north of Williams Lake, B.C. There are four mineable zones within the copper-molybdenite deposit: Gibraltar East, Gibraltar West, Pollyanna and Granite Lake. Open-pit reserves are 358 million tons which average 0.37% Cu and 0.016% MoS2 at a 0.25% Cu cut-off. The Granite Mountain pluton is one of the several Jurassic-Cretaceous intrusions which outcrop along the east side of the Fraser River fault system between Williams Lake and Prince George, B.C. The original Granite Mountain quartz diorite has been metamorphosed by a cataclastic deformation which foliated the rock on a regional scale. Attendant to the development of the foliation, the rock was saussuritized such that the present mineralogy is compatible with that of the greenschist facies. The presence of garnet-bearing assemblages is explained by a restricted increase in water pressure. Pre-mineral intrusive phases within the saussuritized quartz diorite are: (1) leucocratic quartz diorite, (2) aplite and (3) quartz-feldspar porphyry. A late chloritized hornblende dacite dyke is post-mineral. Quartz-feldspar porphyry and leucocratic quartz diorite are locally present on the inner sides of the Gibraltar East, Pollyanna and Granite Lake pits. Their presence suggests a core around which occurs an elliptically shaped sulphide-bearing stockwork. The stockwork, which comprises four ages of vein development, is imposed on and partly controlled by the regional foliation of the samssuritized quartz diorite."

"Currently there is no economical and viable process for on-site metal extraction from Low Grade, Complex or Poly-metallic deposits, and even more, there is not any industrial process or technology able to deal with polymetallic or bulk concentrates containing Cu+Zn+Pb base metals and also precious metals. Traditionally, metals recovery from polymetallic sulfide deposits is performed by mining, selective flotation to separate Cu, Pb and Zn concentrates, and finally, smelting/refining of those concentrates to obtain the refined metals. In many cases, selective flotation of that kind of complex ores produces low metals recovery and low concentrate quality containing impurities such as Hg, As, Bi, etc., which results in high penalties in treatment and refining charges, and consequently, worsening the economy of the mining business. Recovery of the valuable metals from Polymetallic, Complex or Low Grade ores could then be maximised by producing bulk concentrates or middling flotation products to feed novel hydrometallurgical processes, like the integral metallurgical system that is currently under development within the INTMET project. For example, producing bulk concentrates would increase more than 100% Cu+ Zn+Pb cumulative recovery versus conventional selective flotation. Founded by the Horizon-2020 EU Programme, the INTMET Project was started in February 2016 and will be running over three years. The INTMET consortium is led by Cobre Las Cruces (Spain) and integrates twelve partners from seven EU countries, and including Serbia and South Africa as well. The INTMET project represents a challenging opportunity to develop suitable technological solutions to deal efficiently with difficult, polymetallic and complex sulphide ores that are abundant in Europe and worldwide. Main activities carried out during the first 18 months of the INTMET project development includes: (i) An atmospheric leaching pilot plant having a capacity of 300 kg/h bulk concentrate which has been installed and operated continuously for nine months at the Las Cruces mine; (ii) Pressure leaching test work developed by Outotec; (iii) Bioleaching test work performed by Mintek in collaboration with MMI Bor. Prior test work was applied on bulk concentrate samples supplied from Spain, Portugal and Serbia. Some of the results of these technological developments have been very positive and are presented in this paper."

In order to improve the IIAZ toughness of X-60 pipe steel, the intragranular ferrite plate (IFP) technology was used. The characteristics of IFP is claimed to be much fine ferrite plates appear inside the original austenite grains. By means of suitable Re, Zr, Ti additions in a bath with a higher initial oxygen potential, a good control of the peak temperature and the cooling rate during welding simulation, one can get a %IFP in volume over 50%, and the toughness gets up from 55 J to 160 J. It was found that the inclusions most effective in nucleating IFP are some deformable complex silicates which either entrap Re, Zr, Ti oxides or contain these elements. The greater the number of the evenly distributed and effectively nucleating inclusions, the more the %IFP in volume, and the finer the microstructure of the HAZ, so the better the relevant toughness. Generally, these silicates bahave as fine spheres along a line. The present authors revealed that these fine spheres result from the remelting of the shuttle- like silicates due to heating in the process of welding simulation. These silicates used to get a higher sulphur capacity, so MnS deposits might be observed on the periphery of the silicates. IFP was proved to be directly rooted in the [Mn] depleting zone which locates beside MnS deposits.

"With mining, especially coal extraction, comes the necessity of supporting the roof. Since the 1950s, the primary method for roof support has been the use of roof bolts. Roof bolting is considered one of the most hazardous jobs in underground coal mining. In 2004, there were 3,405 injuries reported to the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Of those injuries, 17 percent were associated with bolting machines (593 injuries). The majority of the injuries resulted from rock falling from supported roof. However, injuries involving a part of the body being struck by, or caught between, during bolting and drilling occurred with relatively high frequency (Burgess and Steiner, 2007).Roof drilling and bolt installation is labor-intensive and repetitive. These labor-intensive and repetitive requirements can lead to cumulative trauma. Operators are expected to perform a considerable amount of lifting, carrying, bending, reaching and stretching. Back and shoulders become sore from bending and twisting to install bolts or lift and position drill steels, wrenches and bolts. Confined operator spaces also contribute to difficult and awkward working positions for the operators (Cornelius and Turin, 1998).In South Africa, the majority of the roof bolting machines used are “man-in-position” style machines (Fig. 1). This puts the operator in close proximity to where the drilling and bolting process is performed. When proper operation procedures are followed, it has been proven to be a very effective, productive and safe system. The MSHA-certified automatic temporary roof support (ATRS), canopies and dust collection system of Fletcher bolters all provide the operator with unparalleled protection. However, there are some occupational hazards inherent to the zone located next to the drilling and bolting zone. This has led some customers to request relocating the operator away from this zone. The idea being that the operators will no longer be located in the face area, greatly reducing their exposure to dust, noise, machine and geological hazards."

"There is always a demand in the mining industry to improve the safety and efficiency of roof bolting. Since 2008, Anglo American and Fletcher® have been working together to develop a new roof bolter concept that is safer and more ergonomic while maintaining current production rates. The recognized types of machines currently used in South Africa are always under constant review for improvement; however, there are limitations to the current design. The majority of the machines in South Africa are the “Man in Position” roof bolters. There are currently over 200 of these roof bolters in South Africa, with the bulk of the machines being twin-boom units. When operated correctly, these machines are safe, versatile, reliable and productive. However, with the operators located close to the drilling and bolting operations, they can be exposed to operational hazards. In addition, the major amount of material handling can be quite difficult on an operator. Anglo American, with a desire to improve safety, approached Fletcher to develop a remote style machine with simplified controls that maintained the productivity of the twin-boom machines. After several prototypes, the current model was developed. The chassis was designed for better operator comfort. A dual mast drill module was implemented to reduce the total time to bolt a cut. A remote operator’s station was incorporated to remove the operator from the front of the machine. The design was all about producing a safe and ergonomic machine from front to rear. This paper will explain the evolution and technological advancements from earlier prototypes to the current production machine. The Haveluck gold deposit, located 2.5km north of Meekatharra, contained 1,284,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.8 g/t gold of drill delineated proved and probable ore prior to commencement of production. Following successful laboratory and pilot scale testing a decision was made to establish a 300,000 tonnes per year heap leaching operation. The ore, crushed to minus 100mm was stacked on an impermeable membrane and irrigated with a dilute cyanide solution. Gold was recovered from the resulting pregnant solutions by adsorption onto activated carbon and gold bullion produced in a modified Zadra process desorption plant. From the commencement of mining it was obvious that a high percentage of fine material was being produced which would adversely affect the percolation of the cyanide solution-through the leach heaps. A screening plant was incorporated into the crushing circuit which provided an oversize product satisfactory for heap leaching and an undersize for carbon-in-pulp treatment. Plant design provided for the slurrying of minus 0.8mm ore before feeding to the pachuca tanks. Initial practice was to use four tanks for gold dissolution and two for carbon contact. Vibrating screens were used through- out for the carbon-ore separation and the loaded carbon was stripped in the existing desorption plant.

The industrial Source Complex (ISC3) model is the accepted standard used to predict emissions of particulate matter less tan 10µm in diameter (PM10) from industrial operations. This model, however, over-predicts PM10 emissions from surface mining operations, making permits harder to obtain. The over-prediction is likely due to the fact that the model applies emissions from mobile (dynamic) sources to stationary (static) areas. Utilizing a Gaussian dispersion equation, a Dynamic Component Program was created to correct the over-prediction of the model and results in a much more realistic modeling of actual conditions from mobile sources.

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. This paper details the implementation of a new type of grade control system at the Black Star open cut mine in Mount Isa, Queensland. It explores the site requirements for grade control, what as previously in place and what the site required moving forward. It also details some of the features of the system installed and why it was chosen over other grade control systems available. Black Star open cut mine has been in operation since late 2004, and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Ag-Pb-Zn mineralisation previously mined in the Isa Lead Mine. Black Star is currently mining seven distinct orebodies in and around active void hazard zones and hence, its grade control requirements are very detailed and complex. The implementation of a new system to manage the model update and block out processes was, therefore, of critical importance to the site and required a detailed understanding of the requirements of the entire mining team from drilling through to geology, survey and production. Having previously run the grade control process using site specific æblack boxÆ scripts and macros, Black Star needed to implement a more open, auditable and flexible system, which allowed the geologists to control the process and make strategic changes as the situation demanded. MineSightÆs Axis Grade Control, with its flexible, generic framework for managing the process, met these demands. Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

Because of problems encountered with conventional timber supports, a system of concrete sausageshaped support pillars was tested. The pillars are 3 m long, 0,6 m wide, and between 70 and 80 cm high (the height of the stoping width). They consist of bags filled with a grout of cement (slagment and sand in the ratio of I :2, and are installed in a staggered pattern 6 m apart on dip and 2 m apart on strike. These support packs have proved successful, and, although they cost more than the timber supports formerly used (R4,63 per cent are supported as against R2,26 for the conventional timber pack), their use is felt to be justified when account is taken of the costs of lost production and low productivity due to the bad hangingwall conditions that occurred with the conventional system.

The Mufulira smelter (1, 2,' 3, 4,) is one of three smelters situated on the Zambian Copperbelt to treat concentrates and other intermediate products produced in the area. Two mining companies, Roan Consolidated Mines Limited (RCM) and Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines Limited (NCCM) each have 51% Zambia Government participation. RCM operates two smelters, one at its Mufulira Division and the other at its Luanshya Dl vision. NCCM operates one smelter at its Rokana Division (5). The Mufulira smelter was commissioned in 1937 with two reverberatory furnaces and four converters. The final product, blister copper, was cast from a holding furnace. In 1952 two anode furnaces and a common casting wheel were installed to feed a new and adjacent electrolytic refinery. In 1956 the smelter was extended to accommodate increasing production from the new Chibuluma mine and expansion at Mufulira mine. A third reverberatory furnace, a fifth converter and duplicate anode processing and casting facility were added. The Copperbelt smelters suffered a loss of production potential when higher ash content coals were used in reverberatory smelting furnaces from 1966 onwards. This, and the planned production increases from Mufulira and other RCM mines, indicated a smelting shortfall of 55,000 tonnes of copper a year in the combined capacity of the RCM smelters.

The paper outlines events at the Collinsville State Coal Mine, Queensland, leading to the practice of full face multiple shotfiring in bord and pillar development places. The 1954 disaster is referred to, and factors involved in simultaneous shotfiring in coal are discussed. Promising preliminary multiple shotfiring tests at the Colliery are described, as well as the resulting routine measures adopted, and the changes involved. The subsequent inducing of two outbursts under safe conditions by remote multiple shotfiring is given as justification for the changes made.INTRODUCTIONFollowing a disastrous instantaneous outburst (1.0.) of coal and gas at the Collinsville State Coal Mine in 1954, the necessity for inducer shotfiring for the control of possible further outbursts was established. However this mine, immediately classified as gassy after the 1954 outburst, is subject to the general restrictions pertaining to gassy mines which at present preclude the use of inducer shotfiring due particularly to the non-existence of a permitted exploder for more than six shots, and further, because permitted multipleexploders are not designed for remote firing through long lengths of cable. This situation was met by arresting or reducing progress in the production places, thereby reducing the danger of outbursts while means were being considered to achieve overall maximum safety.In August 1957 two full faces were successfully blasted in experimental simultaneous rounds. In June 1958 four full faces were blasted, and in October 1958 full face grunching without prior cutting, Le. inducer shotfiring, was introduced in No. 1 Tunnel as a production feature. Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located some 75 kilometres southwest of Kamloops, B.C. (Figure 1). The ore is within a porphyry deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 metric tonnes per day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. Head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 persons and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between three owners: TeckCominco (61.4%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and Highmont Mining (5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by an appointed committee.

From an engineering standpoint, roof bolts are inherently more effective than the wood timbers they replaced. Roof bolts promised to dramatically reduce the number of roof fall accidents, which then claimed hundreds of lives each year, and they were initially hailed as “one of the great social advances of our time.” Roof bolting also emerged at a time of rapid technologic transformation of the coal industry, and greatly accelerated the transition to trackless, rubber-tired face haulage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines quickly became the new roof support’s strongest advocate. Some state agencies and miners were skeptical at first, but nearly everyone was soon won over. Case histories were reported showing that roof falls could be largely eliminated while productivity increased dramatically. Little wonder that, in the words of one contemporary observer, “roof bolting has been adopted more rapidly than any other new technology in the history of coal mine mechanization.” Yet by the end of the 1950’s, it was clear that roof fall fatality incidence rates had actually increased. It would be another decade before the superior ground support provided by roof bolts would clearly save lives. The story of how roof bolting was implemented by the mining industry, but took so long to live up to its promise, is a fascinating example of the interaction between economics, technology, regulation, and science. It still has important lessons for today.
