The ISO TC 226 (Materials for the production of primary aluminium) has presently issued more than one hundred standards on the materials: alumina, pitch, petroleum coke, carbon anodes, carbon cathodes, ramming paste, fluorides and refractory). The object of the standardization work is to find methods that both material producers and smelters will accept. Methods that are specific for the operational conditions have been developed in addition to more traditional room temperature methods. Examples of important properties under operational conditions are: Air and C02 reactivity of anodes, Equivalent temperature for baked anodes, Sodium expansion of cathode blocks, Shrinkage and Rammability of paste, Penetration of electrolyte into refractories.

The life-cycle assessment (LCA) approach can be an important tool for the quantification and evaluation of environmental impacts associated with metal production systems. At the conceptual phase of a new metals development project, LCA can: ? Aid project decision making by evaluating the environmental consequences of design decisions ? Support project permitting and reinforce site/process environmental impact assessment ? Allow environmental impact comparisons between alternate flow sheets For existing metals production systems, LCA has been used to aid targeted process improvements by monitoring recent historical trends in environmental performance, either through local or external (externalities) process improvements. This paper discusses the life- cycle assessment methodology, and its application as a supportive tool for environmental decision-making in process design and operation, and for site environmental impact assessment and permitting. Selected examples from a recent LCA performed on the Pressure Acid Leach Process for treating nickel Laterite ores are employed to demonstrate the usefulness of the tool.

METALLIC manganese was first produced in 1773, by Sven Rinmann, a Swedish mineralogist. In 1799 William Reynolds, of Ketley, England, obtained a patent on the use of manganese dioxide in the manufacture of steel, and in 1808 an English patent was granted to John Wilkinson covering the use of manganese ore, or manganiferous ore, as an addition to iron ore in the blast furnace for the production of a superior grade of pig iron. Karsten showed in 1816 that manganese increased the hardness of iron without decreasing its malleability or toughness, while it caused pig iron to be more white in fracture and more fusible. The first practical application of manganese to steel-making, however, is attributed to Josiah Heath who discovered in 1839 (less than 90 years ago) that manganese conferred upon steel the properties of being more easily worked and welded under the hammer. When Bessemer invented the pneumatic process of steel-making which now bears his name he was at first successful because, as it afterward developed, he was using. a Swedish pig iron high in manganese. When his supply of this material ran out, he used a low-manganese pig from English sources and failed signally to produce a steel which could be rolled, while his Swedish licensees were continuing their successful application of his method. And it was not until Robert Mushet, in 1856, suggested the addition of manganese in the form of spiegeleisen to the molten product of the converter that success again came to Bessemer. In 1866, William Siemens patented the use of ferro-manganese as an addition to molten steel to counteract the bad effects of sulfur. It was in 1888, that Robert Hadfield published at some length his account of the effect of manganese as an alloying element in steel and described the unique properties of the now famous Hadfield manganese steel containing about 12 to 14. per cent. manganese and 1.25 per cent. carbon.

Marble has been recognized as a valuable natural resource ever since ancient times. Due to its peculiar aesthetic and technical characteristics as well as the lithotype uniqueness, it has widely been appreciated over the past centuries. In present times its production and demand are enjoying an increasing trend, with comparatively high market prices. All this considered, marble can be included among these natural resources whose exploitation provided, and still provides, an important contribution to the growth of the economic system. Nevertheless, there is at least one more important reason that makes marble a valued resource. For ages, marble represented one of the most important raw materials for sculpture sand architectural masterpieces, which constitute part of the cultural heritage of mankind. With this in mind, the value of marble is strictly related to its extraordinary capability to preserve cultural heritage and therefore to convey civilization from past to future generations. In other words, the role of marble should be recognized as being of the utmost importance in order to attain an overall objective of ?cultural sustainability?, that is, the assurance of the inter-generational flow of the cultural heritage capital. To achieve this sustainability goal, the priorities should be to protect and preserve the world?s artistic and architectural historical heritage, which require restoration works. In this field, a very il task is entrusted to the extractive industry: this industry, in cooperation with historians, art experts and public authorities, is in charge of detecting and supplying historical stones for restoration purposes, taking into consideration that, in order to restore a monument in a correct way, the same lithotypes the monument was made from are needed. These marbles are often no longer in production, so that it becomes necessary to find the location of the original quarries, as only there is it possible to extract even the small quantities of stones that are needed. In this case, the stone, located in its geological context, could have such valued characteristics as to be considered an important public asset and consequently a resource to be preserved and protected even beyond the market conditions. This important task should be carried out by the public administration through a targeted intervention of territorial planning and monitoring, which could include the support for the specific extractive activity.

"EXECUTIVE SUMMARYINTRODUCTIONThe commercial incentives for using molten aluminum in casting operations are numerous and substantial. Although these incentives apply broadly to both shape castings (foundry) operations and wrought alloy production, the merit of a particular motive is indeed downstream processing sensitive. Melting cost reduction is a universal incentive that impacts on essentially all aluminum products. At a natural gas burner cost of $4.50 per therm, for example, the reverberatory furnace energy cost is at least $0.01 per pound of aluminum melted, exclusive of melt loss, fixed costs, and other expenses. The Aluminum Statistical Review' cited 3.188 million metric tons of secondary aluminum that was recovered by the industry in 1995. This represents a re-melt energy cost of over $70 million. Other incentives to use molten secondary aluminum include throughput enhancement, metal chemistry assurances, environmental considerations, and the avoidance of an in-house scrap processing operation.A traditional disincentive to use molten secondary aluminum is metal quality. If a particular secondary processing operation was successful in achieving and preserving an acceptable metal quality level prior to shipment, the subsequent metal transfer and ladle delivery events would frequently obviate these efforts. For example, a metal superheat on the order of several hundred degrees is required for an unheated transfer ladle to travel 3 to 4 hours to a customer location. The rate of the y-alumina formation reaction approximately doubles for every 120°F increase in temperature, therefore, the effect of excess superheat on melt loss and metal quality is considerable. This paper describes the importance of mine ventilation and air conditioning in the operation of a nuclear waste repository. It discusses the impact of ventilation on determining the number and size of shafts and access drifts to and within a repository horizon. The paper also describes the need to maintain separate ventilation systems for waste emplacement and construction operations. The requirement to have filtration capabilities for exhaust air from waste emplacement areas is discussed. Because radioactive high level waste will induce high temperatures in the emplacement drifts, the ability to cool an emplacement drift for re-entry requirements is important. The paper discusses strategies to cool an emplacement drift and the possibility of using continuous airflow to control temperatures in these drifts.

For establishing sustainable material cycle process in human system, a brand new concept should be created, which could recycle the waste materials, which are land-filled and discarded under present economical situation. The concept of 'RtoS' (Reserve (of waste) to Stock) to create 'artificial deposit' of the materials concentrate is one of the best ideas to be applied. From this viewpoint, separation technology, in especial, solid phase separation such as mineral processing technology contributes much to the concentration, making 'artificial deposit' with less energy consumption compared with melting and/or dissolving technologies. Results of rare metals concentration in the e-waste are also introduced as an example with combining novel comminution and parts/powder separation.

Mineralogy is the link between ore formation and ore extraction. It is the most fundamental component of geomet programs, and the most important aspect of a life-of-project approach to mineral resource projects. Understanding orebodies is achieved by understanding the mineralogy and texture of the materials, throughout the process, because minerals hold the information required to unlock the value they contain. Geomet mineralogy programs absolutely require the appropriate expertise and at least three steps of mineral characterisation prior to using semi-automated or other methods: field examination, thorough core logging, and optical microscopy. Economic geological inputs for orebody characterisation are necessary for orebody understanding, and are exemplified by current research in the Zambian Copperbelt, where revised sequence stratigraphy and understanding of alteration, metasomatism and metamorphism can be used to predict topical issues at mine sites. Environmental inputs for sustainability characterisation are demonstrated by recent work on tailings from the Leadville, Colorado, USA area, including linking mineralogy to water quality issues. Risk assessments need to take into account the technical uncertainties around geological variability and mineral extractability, and mineralogy is the only metric that can be used to make this risk contribution.CITATION:Olson Hoal, K, Woodhead, J and Smith, K S, 2013. The efficiency of any iron ore value-adding operation is closely associated with detailed knowledge of the mineralogy, especially in the processing of lower grade and complex ores. There are a number of physico-chemical properties of iron oxide mineral phases (eg goethite, hematite and magnetite) that can be prudently exploited to enhance their processing efficiency. Recent iron ore studies on the upgrading of high-goethite iron ores have highlighted that the knowledge of the various phases of both iron oxide and gangue minerals is critical to the economic processing of these ores. Appropriate knowledge of this kind can lead to better-designed flow sheets for economically viable production of saleable products. With the increasing use of goethitic materials as blend components of iron ore concentrates for steelmaking, this review paper focuses on relevant beneficiation processes and the pivotal role of mineralogy and petrology in producing saleable iron oxide concentrates from ore blends. For goethites, mineral impurities including silica, phosphorus and alumina are very important. The general trend in the minerals industry is towards the processing of fine grained, disseminated mineral deposits. This has led to an increase in the number of fine/ultra-fine grinding installations using stirred media mills. The challenge is that both the equipment type and the mineralogy of the deposit have an effect on specific energy consumption. Fresnillo PLC recognized this issue and addressed it by providing samples for testing in a laboratory regrind system. The objective of the test program was to determine the specific energy required to achieve a product size of 10 µm (P80). A specific energy plot was generated for both a lead and zinc flotation concentrate. It indicated that 34 kWh/t and 51 kWh/t were required for the two samples (Pb and Zn respectively). This difference highlights the effect of mineralogy on the energy required for fine grinding. The regrind feed and products were submitted to a range of basic mineralogy tests to quantify the mineral differences that could have changed the specific energy requirements. These tests provided general mineralogy, documented optical textures, and provided particle size microscopy. The lead concentrate was found to contain significant amounts of silicates in addition to the dominant sulphide, pyrite. The zinc concentrate was determined to be mostly sphalerite with minor amounts of quartz, chalcopyrite, pyrite and galena. The material testing results illustrate the importance of basic mineralogy studies in conjunction with comminution testing to determine specific energy consumption.

"This paper argues that the technology change to mechanization is also going to require a change in people. It presents a model for technological progress and adapts it to the mining industry. It then goes on to motivate the need for mines to become learning organizations in order to achieve maximum value from their people as they become less labour-intensive. In an important sense, mechanization is as much about knowledge as it is about technology.The change when a mine introduces mechanization or a level of automation is not simply one of technology but also a stage in the development of mining from ‘art’ to ‘science’. ‘Art’ describes a state of technology characterized by tacit knowledge, an understanding that comes only from experience, and has no formal procedures and little structure. In contrast, ‘science’ represents a state of technology where all the component processes are understood in detail, all knowledge is explicit, and processes and structures are formal.Studies of other industries, including metal part manufacture and aviation, show that each stage in the progression from art to science changes the nature of the organization and requires a different mix of skills from the workforce. Perhaps the most important change is the increase in knowledge and decision-making required as the technology gets closer to science.There is anecdotal evidence that South African underground hard-rock mines are not learning organizations. Mines by their nature are capitalintensive with long lead times from investment to returns, so there is reluctance to change from the original plans or to encourage staff to think independently. Particularly as mines move from art to science, this reluctance must be overcome.The important lesson for engineers involved in introducing mechanization is to understand that success or failure will be determined by the people involved, and not solely by the technology. The process will almost certainly require a culture change on the mine. We recommend that the mechanization team includes an expert in human and organizational behaviour to ensure that a receptive workforce and management are in place to accept the new technology when it arrives."

Hydrogen peroxide is often used as an oxidising agent in experimental waste electronic equipment (WEE) leaching work. However, the high cost of peroxide is a negative factor in its consideration in further process development. A few studies have reported on the efficient application of peroxide addition schedules to ensure optimum reagent consumption. Large quantities of unleached substrate material contained in WEE feed material result in a large dead volume of material in the leaching reactor. This factor necessitates fast reaction rates to enable the use of a high feed material throughput reactor to enhance overall project viability via hydrometallurgical processing. In this study the effects of hydrogen peroxide addition schedules on base metal leaching efficiency and solution temperatures were tested at laboratory scale. The results showed that overall peroxide consumption can be optimised to lower levels by matching peroxide additions to the particular feed material’s leaching behaviour. A simplified integrated model for peroxide decomposition is used to explain its effect on solution temperatures and leaching rates. Virtually all new technologies require a control system. Any intense process has many process variables that react quickly making manual control difficult. Control system design has a significant impact on the success of a plant especially during ramp-up. New technology projects are particularly sensitive to control system design as the process response is unknown. This paper discusses the important factors encountered in the design of a control system for a new technology. Examples are given of successful new technology plant start-ups where tight coordination of the process control system implementation, process design and selection major equipment led to rapid ramp-ups.

The iron-ore beneficiation and shiploading facilities of the Marcona Mining Company are at San Nicolas Bay which is on the Peruvian coastal desert about two hundred and seventy miles south of Lima. The mines are at elevation of 2,500 ft. Crude ore is transported from the Mine primary crushers to the beneficiation plants by ten miles of overland belt conveyors. After the predominantly magnetic ore is reduced to minus 3/4 in. in the secondary crushing plant, the ore is ground by rod and ball mills and concentrated with magnetic separators. The concentrate slurry is pumped to a thickening and filtering installation for desliming and dewatering. Pelletizing is accomplished with a Lurgi and also a Dravo-Lurgi machine. Deep-water shiploading facilities are available close to the beneficiation plants. Figure 1 shows a flowsheet of the general operation. Pelletizing operations are scheduled 24 hours a day and 365 days per year. A maximum tonnage rate with a high percentage of operating time is necessary to produce the three and one half million tons per year required from the two pellet lines. Process control is a major responsibility and of primary concern to all Operating personnel. The particle size, moisture, and chemical composition of the filter cake must be closely controlled to get uniform high-grade pellets. Key points are sampled routinely and analyzed on a two-hour basis to provide the necessary structure and chemical data to maintain a superior final product. The iron content of the pellets is held between 65.3 and 65.8 percent with 4.0 percent Si02. Sulfur is below 0.04 percent and copper is below 0.02 percent in the finished pellet.

In recent years the issue of seismograph calibration and accuracy has been a major focal point of the ISEE Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section. In fact, questions concerning the consistency and reliability of seismograph measurements essentially led to the development of this ISEE section. One of the early actions of the section involved the development of “Field Practice Guidelines” for the use of seismographs. These guidelines specifically state that “Placement and coupling of the vibration sensor are the two most important factors to ensure accurate ground vibration recordings.” This paper will address the results obtained from using different coupling methods to record vibration and airblast levels generated from production blasting in a limestone quarry. The data obtained clearly indicate that seismometer burial provides the best coupling for recording ground vibrations. Microphone height has also been an issue regarding the accuracy of recorded airblast levels. The data we obtained indicates that microphone height is not a significant factor.

In many mining applications it is not practical to use gravity takeups. In these situations hydraulic takeups are often utilized. Performance specifications are often compromised by designs which have inherently high internal friction and inefficient hydraulic designs. This results in performance which does not match the requirements of the conveyor system. A computer model has been built to check unit efficiencies and field measurements have been taken which verify the results.

Simple quotation of quantities of coal reserves neglects the relationship between qualities of coals and their efficient use. If exploitation of a deposit is contemplated, its life expectancy can be deduced only if its reserves are estimated according to the coal user's technological standards. A wide range in properties will satisfy a steaming coal, whereas a high vitrinite high rank coal would be preferred for coking and a low inertinite low rank coal for conversion. In competitive trading the buyer's commercial specification may require weighing against the producer's practical ideals, especially when beneficiation is critical. Differentiation of grades in quality of a deposit provides an intelligent understanding of the economic importance of the deposit. The Wongawilli seam of the New South Wales Southern Coalfield exemplifies the effect of quality criteria upon the extent of in situ, recoverable and marketable classes of economic reserves. Effective management of a deposit will result from simultaneous quotation of coal qualities and quantities in a statement of its reserves.

The acceptable rate of rise of the tailings beaches on upstream-raised tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is critical to life of mine planning. This is illustrated through a case study in Western Australia presented in this paper. Accurate estimates of expected beach slopes, the maximum rate of rise at which the tailings can be placed, and the dry density that the tailings solids will achieve after deposition (stored density) are required in order to design TSFs that will allow upstream raises to be constructed safely and economically. Where operations have been occurring for some time, these three parameters are able to be measured and can be well-defined. If process plant throughputs are proposed to increase through mine expansion, for example, increasing the rate of rise of the tailings can compromise the potential for upstream TSF raising, thus influencing the viability of such an expansion, the timing for its implementation, and significantly increase costs.This paper outlines how rate of rise can be a key constraint, and that ‘rules of thumb’ that are typically applied may not result in the outcomes they were meant to achieve. An example of an experimental method to justify an increase to the ‘rule of thumb’ ~2.5 m/year limit for gold tailings in a semi-arid climatic setting is discussed, followed by rate of rise modelling that ultimately framed the decision-making process for a mine expansion. The rate of rise modelling method was adopted to carefully distribute tailings deposition across four TSFs, comprising nine separate tailings cells, in order to maintain appropriate rates of rise. The implications resulting from various deposition splits are presented, including the need for expansion. In addition, this paper outlines the effect of rate of rise on the state (density) of the tailings after deposition, and provides commentary on how anecdotally acceptable rates of rise, based on the aforementioned ‘rule of thumb’ of 2.5 m/year may not provide assurance of geotechnical stability through the tailings achieving a dilative state, as has been thought in the past. An example of the influence of rate of rise on the state of the tailings, with respect to air-drying and the critical state line (CSL) for the material, is presented. The data indicate that reducing the rate of rise may allow a higher dry density to be achieved through air-drying (evaporative desiccation), sufficient to move the material from the contractive to the dilative zone (i.e. from above the CSL, to sufficiently below it).CITATION:Chapman, P J and Williams, D A, 2018.
