Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll in the US coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicates that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied in order to reduce dust levels. An overview ofCWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

It is widely accepted that both underground and surface blasting operations can de-stabilise excavations to the point where it can threaten the feasibility of mining through personnel safety or OK dilution. Research has been undertaken to outline a practical method in which the impact of blasting will be accounted for during the early excavation design stage by modelling, and during the following production stages by monitoring rock response to blasting operations.

While the ability to design stable slopes has unproved greatly over the past 20 years, trends towards steep short-term slopes for small highgrade orebodies, and very high slopes for mega-pits centered on low grade deposits are starting to indicate limitations in available technology.

The mode of operation of dolomite kilns at a magnesium reduction plant using the Magnatherm process was designed to minimize operation cost and maximize kiln refractory life. Analysis of downstream operation issues shows the quality metric for dolime changed from loss on ignition to specific surface area. This produced a complete change in kiln operation; the net results being major plant productivity increases decrease in operating cost, and increases in both kiln operating costs and reline frequency.

The concept of caring is in most cases confused with material needs and not psychological needs. By giving employees a job, most managers think that employees should be grateful and return the favour by being loyal, productive and working safely. Other managers hold the view that employees can be lucky to have a job. To show and demonstrate that management are caring for the safety of the workforce requires involvement, dedication and commitment. Obtaining the trust and respect of the workforce should be the main thrust of any organization because within trust and respect lie the secret of optimal safety performance. In the last 70 years, all the fatalities and serious injuries that occurred in the mining industry can be traced back to one thing, non-caring. The same safety non-compliances are still observed, reported and planned against as 70 years ago, and strange as it may sound, the same injuries occur the same way. The question could be asked: Does the mining industry need more risk assessments? More codes of conduct? More engineering. Or does the mining industry need more caring?

Many workers have observed an inverse relationship between final concentrate grade and valuable component recovery achieved by a flotation circuit, i.e. an increase in either grade or recovery may only be achieved at the expense of the other. The relationship is termed a "grade-recovery" curve and, in theory, limits the separation obtained by the circuit. However, circuit surveys in a nickel concentrator indicate that the operating "grade-recovery" curve of a circuit is not only determined by the nature of the ore and the circuit operating conditions, but also by the circuit design, particularly in terms of stage capacities. The surveys show that different capacity circuits can produce different operating curves for the same ore, and that capacity reallocation between stages has the potential to improve both grade and recovery. In particular, the relationship between circuit design and operating curve position is shown to be a function of the circulating loads generated by the circuit design, balancing the beneficial effects of recycling material against the proportion of plant capacity consumed by recycling.

Hydrocyclones are the most widely used device for classification in a grinding circuit. However, even the most efficient hydrocyclone has a bypass of fines from the feed to the underflow which reduces comminution circuit performance, as well as misclassification around the cut point. Fine screens classify only according to the particle size, allowing for a reduction in the recirculation of fines back to the mill. The development of high capacity multi-screens makes fine classification in a grinding circuit a viable option. Minera Saucito recently substituted hydrocyclones with screens in its grinding circuit. The change of classifier resulted in an increase in throughput and lead recovery but a decrease in silver recovery. This case study presents the changes in comminution and flotation performance that occurred after the installation of screens and uses historical operational data collected over 12 months of operation to investigate the reasons for these observed changes. A growing demand within the minerals industry for sustainable development and the introduction of carbon taxes have resulted in a significant focus on improving the energy efficiency of comminution circuits. However, in this drive for improved energy efficiency the role of classification has been overlooked. Inefficient classification and large recirculating loads reduce circuit capacity, result in over-grinding and higher specific energy consumption.It is well understood that classification increases mill capacity; therefore, closed ball mill-cyclone circuits have become an industry standard. However, due to limitations in cyclone classification efficiency, the optimum recirculating load is limited to about 250 per cent. A simple relationship quantifying the effect of classification efficiency and recirculating load on grinding circuit capacity is presented in this paper. The possibility of improving the capacity of ball mill circuits by improving classification efficiency is discussed, considering the current practical limitations of classification equipment. Simulation tools were used to evaluate circuits with cyclones and with high frequency screens to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency. The investigation also identified potential benefits to flotation recovery due to a reduction in over-grinding.CITATION:Jankovic, A and Valery, W, 2012. Efficient flotation of fine phosphate minerals from a deslimed waste phosphate stream (-74 microns) has been achieved by both bench-scale flotation and by flotation with a 2-inch air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) unit. A sample was collected from the waste phosphate slime stream at the SF Phosphate Limited Operations near Vernal, Utah, for flotation experiments at University of Utah laboratories. The collector used was a mixture of fatty acid, petroleum sulfonate and kerosene. Bench-scale flotation test results show that the minus 15-micron particles have a significant adverse effect on phosphate flotation. When the minus 15-micron material was removed by a classifying hydrocyclone, improved flotation recovery and concentrate grade were realized. A bench-scale flotation recovery of 86 % with a concentrate grade of 16% P2O5 was obtained from classified waste slime (74 x 15 microns) feed material containing 11.3% P2O5 In contrast, a 90% P2O5 recovery was achieved with a concentrate grade of 16-18% P2O5 by single-stage ASH flotation. With a second stage of ASH flotation, a concentrate containing 23% P2O5 was realized at an overall recovery of 75%. These results indicate that the industrial application of ASH flotation technology for phosphate recovery from waste slimes is promising.

The iron and steel industry accounts for almost 5 % of the total world CO2 emissions. Optimisation of the steelmaking process has led to significant reductions in the energy intensity to the point where it is now close to the thermodynamic limit. Further reductions are not likely to be achieved with efficiency improvement alone and will require the development of novel or breakthrough technologies. This paper will show the costs of implementing CO2 capture at direct atmospheric emission points for a number of iron and steel production processes. These include a conventional process, top gas recycling processes, the Corex and Hismelt smelt reduction processes and the Midrex direct reduction process. Depending on the point source emission, costs of capture with existing chemical absorption technology at iron and steel plants can be similar to capturing CO2 at pulverised coal fired power plants.

Coastal and marine mines affect the seabed?s biological resources, eg fisheries, when large volume wastes such as tailings are placed on the seabed, and by the extraction processes from marine mining. Worldwide monitoring of such effects for the past 30+ years now provides information to describe Best Practice design, construction and monitoring procedures. The critical environmental factors for submarine tailings placement (STP) are the selection of an appropriate deposition site and discharge depth, the deposition rate of the tailings, and the speed of biodiversity recovery to a sustainable ecological succession. These should be predictable at new sites using current modeling and experimental procedures. Prediction procedures are still needed to minimize potential destabilization of deposited tailings, and consequent biodiversity recovery setbacks. Comparable environmental information is needed from marine mining sites.

"Studies have shown that there is a correlation between commissioning and start-up time, i.e. time to reach full plant design capacity, and the degree of innovation and technical/engineering uncertainty in the project design. The paper describes the types of start-up curves for plants according to the level of technology or uncertainty in the process design. The need to properly describe and understand the commissioning and start-up time is examined using these curves and the importance on project success is highlighted. A number of case histories of recent mining and metallurgical projects are also reviewed. Finally, the paper reviews how to better assess the level of start-up uncertainty associated with a project and makes suggestions for decreasing the commissioning time due to technological risk.INTRODUCTIOThe start-up of a new mining and metallurgical facility, a much anticipated event, is a critical step in the life of such a project. Achieving a successful start-up and reaching the design capacity on-time requires careful planning, a thorough understanding of the key technological and engineering components involved and a well-trained and adequatelystaffed start-up crew. In this paper, some of the aspects related to start-up of a mining/metallurgical project will be explored, and in particular, the impact of the technology component will be examined. In order to illustrate this, a number of case histories based on recent mining and metallurgical projects will be discussed. Ways of assessing and understanding the uncertainty associated with technological issues related to start-up of a mining and metallurgical plant will also be examined.The history on mining and metallurgy is full of success stories of great mines and mills that are now considered “company makers” (well known examples of such successes include the Horne mine for Noranda which had a 1 year start-up in 1926-27, the Dome mine for Placer Dome, the Grasberg deposit for FMI in Indonesia). Less well documented are specific studies relating to plant start-ups and what constitutes a success or a failure, however there are a few notable references in the literature and these will be reviewed."

The advent and easy availability of fast and powerful digital computers has marked a transition from one era to another in the field of process control in many industries. Mineral processing is no exception. Aims, practices and problems associated with process control of mineral beneficiation plants in the 'old days' are compared with those available at present. Although basic processes remain generally the same, there have been simultaneous social and economic developments, which directly relate to the development and present value of process control. Lower head grades are now treated, plant capacities have increased, and a large proportion of future capital in the mineral industry will be associated with large capacity plant, treating still lower grades. Environmental considerations have pressurised moves to better control in some areas. With these changes, economic operating incentives have changed, and process control has, in many plants, become more critical. Finally, while computer technology has developed recently at a very rapid rate, developments in the fields of instrumentation, basic on-line measurement and sampling have in general lagged behind, limiting the progress possible in process control. The impact of conversion on the coal industry can be summarized very briefly: We are going to have to mine an awful lot of coal. Fortunately, the United States has the coal reserves available, and given the right conditions, we can mine it. The coal reserves of the United States are enormous. If we consider them on the basis of proved reserves, using the standards of the petroleum industry--that is, resources mapped and explored and recoverable with present techniques at close to present costs--and compare that with the reserves of other fuels, coal constitutes 88 per cent of the proved recoverable energy resources of the nation. That includes oil, natural gas, oil shale and uranium, so long as the uranium is used in burner reactors. If we consider resources on the basis of "ultimate recoverable" reserves, that is, those resources which can be extracted with improved technology and at somewhat higher costs--and if we include those resources of all fuels not yet found but believed to be waiting discovery--coal still accounts for 74 per cent of the national total. We have built a hydrocarbon economy in which about 76 per cent of our total energy needs are supplied by petroleum and natural gas, and about 20 per cent by coal. Domestic resources of oil and gas are running dangerously low and, assuming a continued hydrocarbon economy, the 20 per cent supplied by coal may increase dramatically. We already import nearly a quarter of the petroleum we consume, and the chief source of additional imports seems to lie in the politically unstable Middle East. Natural gas is in even shorter supply, and the problems of importing it seem at least as difficult as those of oil. The fact is, the United States is already relying to an increasing extent on foreign fuel sources. There is an obvious national risk in making an important part of energy supply hostage to foreign governments of uncertain tenure and friendliness. Copper sulfate is traditionally used to activate various types of sulfide minerals. The list of users includes Falconbridge Sudbury operations, where copper sulfate solution is added to the pyrrhotite/pentlandite middlings at the scavenging stage. Results from some batch tests reported in the literature suggested that copper activation is helpful for the improvement of pentlandite recovery, especially in the difficult to float fine particle range. Any improvement in pentlandite recovery is important since it is the main nickel bearing sulfide mineral. The impact of copper sulfate for this function has been investigated. Since the focus of current investigation was the flotation behaviour of minerals at the scavenger stage, rougher flotation was kept as constant as possible at two different weight recoveries, namely 13.2 per cent and 15.5 per cent that is relevant to industrial practice. Samples taken during batch testing were extracted using DETA and flotation products from selected tests were analysed to determine the recovery by size behaviour in relation to the use of copper sulfate. Results provide significant evidence that the addition of copper sulfate to these middlings does not yield greater nickel recovery, either on an overall or specific particle size basis. It is concluded that copper sulfate is wasted in the process and that self activation behaviour of the ore at a slightly reduced pH is sufficiently significant to maintain the scavenger recovery of pyrrhotite and pentlandite at desirable levels. Results obtained from limited circuit trials have shown supporting evidence for this conclusion.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.
