The twenty years before World War I was the Golden Age of copper smelting in British Columbia. In this short time, the smelters developed from small, primitive units to large, efficient operations. The first copper claims had been staked on Howe Sound and Knight Inlet in 1864, and there was extensive copper mining in the interior by the mid-1880s, but before 1895, all ore was shipped out of the country for smelting, converting and refining. The first interest in smelter construction was undoubtedly inspired by a Provincial bonus and Dominion land grants offered to smelter builders. The early smelters made use of small blast furnaces which were designed to smelt any kind of ore, but usually far too little ore was available. The first smelter seems to have been the McRae furnace on the Spillimacheen River (1883), followed by Vancouver (1889), Revelstoke (1891), and Golden (1891) (1). They each smelted a few tons of galena and then quickly closed down permanently for lack of ore. Only smelters that actually produced some copper matte are described in the following sections.

At present, approximately 80 % of the worlds mine production of copper is achieved by smelting and electrorefining. The principle aim of copper electrorefining is to satisfy the large demand for extremely pure copper. It is remarkable that high quality copper cathodes with the required purity (99.99+% Cu, ASTM B115-10) and structural characteristics (i.e. deposit density and morphological texture) are produced from impure copper anodes dissolved in electrolytes containing a variety of impurities. This is accomplished with the proper control of operating parameters such as: current density; temperature; copper and sulfuric acid concentration; agitation; substrate preparation; and the application of electrolyte additives. The basic elements of the electrolysis of copper have not changed significantly over the past 150 years since the early developments of James Elkington. Importantly, our fundamental understanding of the underlying electrochemistry has advanced considerably. This is especially true regarding our knowledge of the mechanistic role of additives during the electrocrystallization of copper. This is a very complex subject and modern electrochemical techniques and the development of surface characterization and imaging instruments has helped immensely in our ultimate understanding of how additives control the deposit structure and morphology. The purpose of this paper is to review the historical development and application of electrolyte additives in copper electrorefining and to examine our current knowledge regarding their use. INTRODUCTION The first transatlantic telegraph cable was completed in August 1858. Regrettably, this cable failed shortly after the initial connections. After several more failed attempts, improvements in materials and copper quality resulted in successful communication between Europe and America on July 28, 1866. In many ways this hallmark event demonstrated the need for high purity copper. The first copper refinery in the world was commissioned in May 1869 in Pembrey, South Wales by partners Josiah Mason and James Balleney Elkington. (Historical Note). The 1865 and 1868 British patents issued to James Balleney Elkington were the foundation for the first commercial production of high purity electrolytic copper (Elkington, 1865, 1869, 1870). This important achievement was made possible primarily by the invention of the dynamo which was based on the fundamental operating principles advanced by Michael Faraday. A symbiotic relationship between copper refining and the dynamo was henceforth established. The dynamo provided electric current for electrolytic refining of copper and the electrorefining tankhouse provided pure copper which was required for the generation and transmission of electricity.

The general history of piling is traced up to the present time with regard to the evolution of methods and materials. The processes have been strongly influenced by developments in basic equipment and industrial change. It is noticeable that in the twentieth century more progress has taken place than in the many previous centuries. It has been strongly influenced by the general development of Soil Mechanics. Test loading is probably the most effective way to assess the success of designs and many empirical relationships have been challenged through it. As we approach a new century it appears that it will be an age of rapid equipment development, with much enhancement of understanding of what has been done. Processes of automatic construction and testing will becoming commonplace. These changes will narrow the limits of conventional scatter that have come to be accepted and to a large extent will be driven by political efforts to curtail energy consumption, to raise standards of quality and reliability, and to conserve the environment. 1. Ancient history. Piling is an ancient art. Its first mention in history is from Herodotus, the first person to commit an account of his times to the written word in the years 557 to 479 BC. He evidently had a strong interest in engineering matters because he wrote of building, brick making, reinforced brickwork, river training, canal building, bridge construction, tunnelling and its acoustic detection and piling. Organization In 1948, the Committee on Divisionalization and Publication Program of AIME, known as the Johnson Committee, recommended the reorganization of the Institute into three branches, Mining, Metals and Petroleum. This recommendation was accepted and the new organizational structure was implemented in Jan., 1949. The Mining Branch, at the time of the formation, had three divisions: the Coal Division formed in 1929, the Industrial Minerals Division (IndMD) dating from 1935, and the Minerals Beneficiation Division (MBD) formed in 1948 from the Milling Methods Committee, which had existed for many years. There did not exist, however, a division for the geologists and mining engineers. From the time of the founding of the Institute, this group was the main stem of AIME and never felt the need to segregate. The disciplines of mining and geology were served by a number of technical standing committees of AIME. With the birth of the new Branch, a new Division, the Mining, Geology and Geophysics Division (MGGD) was formed, completing the divisional structure of the Mining Branch and providing a home for all members. The governing body was the Mining Branch Council, with two members from each Division of the Mining Branch and one each from the Mineral Industry Education Division and the Mineral Economics Division. These last two divisions served all three Branches of AIME. The Division is such an important unit in the organization structure that it is of value to explain that it appoints committees to handle pro- grams, publications, and awards - representing the main functions of the Institute - as well as many others. There is enough flexibility in the organization so that each Division may have its own special committee structure as long as primary functions are provided. The past is indeed prologue to the future, for in 1957 the Johnson "Branches" gave way to the Fletcher "Societies." The Fletcher Committee, in 1958, recommended a new reorganization into Societies, each with the authority to administer its own finances and to designate certain officers and directors to the AIME Board. INTRODUCTION Grinding control is currently the most publicized control subject in the minerals industry. Flotation control and crushing control have not as yet received the widespread attention that grinding control has. The primary reasons for this center around the high capital costs of grinding equipment and the fact that grinding mills are extremely energy inefficient. In a typical copper concentrator the energy requirements to produce refined copper are: (1) [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Mining4.93 x 10817.3 Mineral Processing9.63 x 10833.8 Smelting and Refining13.9 x 10848.9] One-third of the total energy used for copper production is for mineral processing. A breakdown of this energy into process steps yields the following: [Total Energy Distribution (Kw-hr/yr)% Crushing and Grinding 7.16 x 108 73.8 Flotation 0.76 x 108 7.8 Materials Handling1.78 x 10818.4] It is apparent that comminution operations consume the largest proportion of the energy for processing and as such become major targets for improvements in efficiency. Unfortunately, size reduction operations are extremely inefficient. Efficiency calculations for grinding range from less than 0.1% to about 5% depending on the evaluation criteria. Because of these facts, grinding control has been and will continue to be the focus of major process control efforts. OBJECTIVES AND BENEFITS All benefits achieved as the result of grinding control are derived from modifying physical parameters which improve the efficiency of the grinding mill. The hazards which naturally prevail in underground coal mines, always severe and unpredictable due to the loosely-consolidated strata in which coal is frequently found, are increased by the commonly-occurring combination of coal dust, methane, and explosives. It was recognized by the mid-nineteenth century that coal dust was the basic factor contributing to disastrous explosions killing hundreds of miners, and that the ignition of methane gas was often the source of the coal dust explosions. It was apparent that preventing the ignition of methane was a critical part of avoiding these disasters, and it was also apparent that one cause of such ignitions was the firing of explosives. In addition, it was found that dust explosions were often initiated by blown-out shots of explosives in the absence of methane.

First, a definition: “an explosive is called a permissible explosive when it is similar in all respects to the sample that passed certain tests by the national Bureau of Mines, and when it is used in accordance with the conditions prescribed by that bureau. * This was the definition as stated in Miners’ Circular No. 2,” published by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1911, and it is still applicable today. Of course there have been changes over the years, with the name “MSHA Permitted Explosive” now the legal terminology since January 1989, but the old 1911 circular still tells us what the material is. Note that the definition doesn’t even specifically state “coal mining.” A permissible can be required in guy underground operation that is deemed to have a gas or dust hazard, although in 1911 it was certainly meant to refer only to coal.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, furnace, open slag bath, Evraz, Highveld In 1963, the full-scale engineering study for the development of an Iron, Steel, and Vanadium plant was initiated. This was the birth of Evraz Highveld and its process flow as it is known today. Highveld started out as a steel works that produced steel and vanadium-bearing slag by using a titaniferous magnetite iron ore mined from its own mine site near Steelpoort. The process utilized co-current rotary kilns for pre-reduction, and submerged-arc furnaces for the production of pig iron with approximately 1.15% vanadium. Because of various technical challenges that the submerged-arc furnaces experienced over the years, a decision was taken in 2004 to convert the furnaces to Open Slag Bath (OSB) operation, in order to enable the maximum production of iron and vanadium while improving the control over operational parameters. The conversion proved to be highly successful and, since 2005, three furnaces have been converted to OSB operation. The fourth furnace will be converted in the first half of 2011. The conversion to OSB furnaces not only yields higher vanadium recovery to the metal at the iron plant, but also improves the overall throughput of the steel plant. This is the result of a higher carbon content of the liquid iron from the OSB furnaces, eliminating the need for anthracite addition to the shaking ladle process. This reduces the blowing time by approximately 60%. The conversion of the furnaces to OSB configuration is seen as an enabling technology change and a prerequisite to the implementation of other plant improvements that are envisaged. The long-term vision of EHSV is to convert five furnaces to OSB mode, and permanently decommission the two remaining submerged-arc furnaces. This will allow EHSV to maintain current steel and vanadium production but at a significantly improved overall efficiency.

I am going to discuss gold mining in Mexico during the last twenty centuries and try to suggest some of the futures that may develop in this industry in the next decade. Before I start this rapid review of such a long developing mining tradition, T must give credit to my sources. I an, talking here as an associate of Commoditi,c,s Reseflrch Unit Ltd. of London (better known as CRU) and as a principal of Ainsworth-Jenkins Holdings, an international mineral resource consultant group that has been exploring and deveJoping mining properties in Mexico and Central America for the last six years. CRU is the leading consultancy providing industry, governments and financial institu­tions with analysis and advice on the metals and the mining industries. They recently completed a three volume study entitled Gold Mining Opportunities in Mexico. This .<1tudy describes Mexico, the business environment, its geology and details its gold mining potential with property descriptions and maps. I have adopted and adapted the s11mmari.zed Mexican government statistics and rlrawn on some of the historical comments in these volumes. However, I do not have ti me (nor would it be appropriate) to be giving the details of the CRU work. Jorge Ordonez, whose shoes I am trying to fill today, was a major contributor to the study and it was an honour to be asked by Willem Beunderman, the Principal Editor, to step in when Jorge was unfortunately unable to be here. Jorge has been an enormous help to Ainsworth­Jenkins and a consistent friend of foreign investment in Mexico. Our own work in Mexico has allowed us to obtain a few useful in­sights into this most interesting slice 0f Mexican history.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.

THE influence of mineral production on the development of the western United States has been profound. From 1848 to 1860, there was only gold production, the effect of silver began in 1860, and from then on both had a powerful influence. Lead production started in 1863, copper in 1863, and zinc in 1885, but was small until 1898. Gold alone was therefore the stimulus of the early settlement and exploration of the Western States.. But mineral deposits caused neither acquisition of territory nor determination of boundary lines. Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado were formally acquired from Mexico fourteen days after the actual date of the discovery (January 19, 1848)1.2 of gold at Sutters Mill, near the present town of Coloma, California (a discovery which, with the immediate new discoveries, aroused the world several months later) ; but the acquisition was by treaty (under negotiation for some time but signed February 2, 1848)3 in settlement of a war involving the boundaries of the grassy plains of Texas, an area at that time not known to contain any metals, and to date found to have but few metal deposits.4 The international boundary at 49º latitude for the far northwest states was determined by causes other than mineral deposits.

ONLY the acute phase of the smelter fume problem is new. The problem itself is older than the Christian era. While both lead and copper were mined and crudely smelted ; on: 3,000 years ago, it was not until the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula and the British Isles, which occurred but shortly before the beginning of the Christian era, that there was any evidence of smelting operations on a scale sufficiently large to permit a fume problem. Around Huelva, Spain, are found more than 30 million tons of slag from lead smelting conducted there by the Romans. Pliny tells us that more than 20,000 slaves were employed in the Iberian mines. Extensive mining and smelting by the Romans in England and Wales were coincident with the Iberian proceedings. These metallurgical operations were upon a sufficiently large scale to produce marked results both upon the surrounding country and the smelter workers, but, as they were those of a conqueror upon conquered soil, conducted by slaves, imperial Rome failed to recognize that such a thing as a smoke problem did or could arise, and whatever fume question there may have been at that .time remained a question only to those who had no chance to answer any phase of it. The smelting operations of the Romans extended over about 400 years, and little is "recorded of lead and copper smelting from that time until the 16th century. From the revival beginning at this period up to the present century, the growth of smelting has been comparatively gradual. In Great Britain, smelting was conducted almost wholly in localities where metallurgical operations were of paramount importance, and the communities that grew up in smelter localities were due to and dependent upon the mines and smelters. This fact had much to do with the comparative freedom of British smelting from burdensome fume litigation and legislation. To a lesser degree these conditions applied to the German operations which, when coupled with the further fact that most of the early German operations were to a greater or less degree fiscal workings of Prussia, Saxony and Brunswick-Hanover; accounts for

O&apos;Gara, Director of the Department of Agricultural and Smelter By-Products Investigations, of the American Smelting & Refining Co., Salt Lake City, Utah, is here; he has given attention to this very important problem and I will call on him for a few remarks. P. J. O&apos;GARA, Salt Lake City, Utah.-I have had charge of the investigations of the smoke problem for the American Smelting and Refining Co. during the past four years. One of the worst burns we ever experienced occurred shortly after we began putting all our gases through the baghouse. This occurred in 1914 after the roaster gases had been put through the baghouse; previous to that time, the greater portion of the roaster gases was not put through the baghouse. Everyone knows why a hot-air balloon goes up. The hotter the air in the balloon, the higher it will go. In other words, hot gases will rise higher than cold gases. When gases are handled in any way that will tend to lower their temperatures, these gases are going to travel less high in the atmosphere and will therefore tend to reach the ground sooner than if they are turned out very hot. So far as injury to vegetable life is concerned, sulphur dioxide is the only element in smelter smoke that need be considered. The solution of the problem will be either to take out the excess of sulphur dioxide or to diffuse it high enough, up in the atmosphere so that the concentra-

Solution mining, sometimes also refered to as chemical mining or bacterial mining, is an innovative technology which, by making use of proper chemical reagents and taking advantage of bio-chemical action of some micro-organism species, can dissolve effectively most. desirable metallic values from ores and then extract them profitably from the resultant metal-bearing solution by suitable means to form the metal product it is more preferable to the conventional mining methods, not only because of its capability to improve working conditions and minimize environmental problems either underground or on surface, but also for its amenability in particular, to exploit low-grade or submarginal ore bodies, or those deposits which are too deep-seated to be mined out economically. Furthermore, it also provides a potential approach to win metals directly from their ores or ore-deposits in-situ by more simplified methods and at a lower cast than the conventional mining-milling-smelting process would do previously. Hence, in developing countries such as China, it will most, probably become a new mining tool of great promise. (1)

Around the beginning of the 20th Century, annual aggregate production in the United States amounted to about 50 million short tons. Today annual aggregate production is nearly 2.5 billion tons. Over a third of the States in the country produce more aggregate than the Nation did at the turn of the century. I would like to describe some of the historical events that allowed this nearly 50 fold increase in aggregate production. You might wonder why I want to talk about history. Some of our best ideas lie buried in the past, waiting to be rediscovered in the present. Almost every issue that the aggregate industry experiences today has been recognized for at least a decade; many of those issues have been recognized for a half a century; and a few of them have been recognized for nearly a century. The main reason for this article is to save the past from the forgetful indifference of the present-to faithfully preserve the past, to illustrate the insights of our predecessors, and to demonstrate how little of what we know today is really new.
