INTRODUCTORY. THE presentation to the Institute, eight years ago, of the paper of Pošepny on " The Genesis of Ore-Deposits " has borne fruit in much fresh: investigation, as is evidenced, for example, by the group of very valuable papers, by distinguished members" of the United States Geological Survey, read at the Washington meeting-discussions of general principles particularly suggestive to those who are engaged in mining. Pošepny, in the discussion of his famous treatise, said that the present writer seemed to look at every new conception in ore-deposition" from the sole standpoint of its immediate usefulness in mining."* Protesting mildly against " sole " and "immediate," I accept the impeachment. It calls for no defence. THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECENT THEORIES. Given the idea of an underground water-circulation as the chief factor in the deposition of ore, the next step in the inquiry as to the genesis of such deposits is, the endeavor to determine which particular part of the general water-circulation is responsible for the results. Around this question have centered the controversies of a generation, and to these controversies we owe the gradual clarification of our ideas upon the processes of ore-formation. It is unnecessary to sketch here their progress from Werner to Le Conte, who combated in 1883 the extreme views of the lateral-seeretionists, and in 1893 opposed the narrow interpretation of the ascensionist-theory. The generally accepted opinions of to-day are a well-deserved tribute to his philosophic discrimination. This paper is concerned with the observation and analysis of bubble clusters in a laboratory flotation cell. A device was used in which bubbles were allowed to rise in clean water containing the same frother and collector concentration as in the cell. Bubble clusters were recorded using a high speed camera and analysed using an image analyser. Dodecyl amine was employed as a collector to float silica. The effect of impeller speed on the cluster behaviour was investigated. The results were interpreted in terms of cluster diameter and shape factor. The sizes of the bubbles forming the clusters were also measured and compared to the sizes of the independent bubbles in the cell. It was found that there was an optimum impeller speed in which the cluster diameter was a maximum. Higher agitation and the consequent higher power inputs resulted in cluster break-up while lower shear rates promoted cluster formation.

The entrainment of charge materials, evaporation or volatilization of elements and ejection of slag and metal by spitting or the bursting of gas bubbles are mechanisms whereby stainless steel plant dust are generated from the electric arc furnace and refining converter. TCLP and ASTM D 3987-85 tests on dust that was collected from the baghouse filter system of a South African Stainless Steel plant showed that this dust can be considered hazardous according to South African legislation, due to the high degree of Cr (VI) leachability (~13mg/l for TCLP and ~8mg/l for ASTM vs. regulation threshold of 0.05mg/l in drinking water). The dust is therefore considered to be harmful to both the environment and human health, due to its high solubility in water and carcinogenic properties. It should therefore be treated before being stockpiled or land filled. This paper consequently describes an investigation into the formation of Cr(VI)-containing stainless steel plant dust and the stabilisation thereof in a sintering process, whereby the dust was mixed with a silica-rich clay. It is postulated that Cr(VI) form when the (Mg,Fe,Mn,Cr)3O4spinel phase, CaO, Ca(OH)2 and CaF2 (all of which are present in the dust) react. This reaction was found to take place both at ambient and at high temperatures (1100°C). Stabilization of Cr(VI) in the dust could be achieved at an optimum sintering temperature of 1100°C for a 50mass% dust : 50mass% clay mixture. Chromium emission during the sintering process was found to be low, and within environmental limits.

THE causes that have formed fissures in the earth's crust, and the agencies that have converted them into metallic beds, are amongst the most important and interesting subjects that can engage the attention of the mining engineer or the scientist. They lie at the very base of the whole system of vein geology, and until something like a correct theory can be arrived at with regard to them, the science as such is necessarily very incomplete. The data for such a theory, owing to a lack of careful and systematic observations in countries pre-eminently metalliferous, like Mexico and the States of Central and South America, are almost entirely wanting. Doubtless there has been abundant speculation on the subject, from the earliest times down to the present, in every country where mining has been one of the leading industries of the inhabitants. Perhaps the theory of Elie de Beaumont more nearly approaches a satisfactory explanation than that of any contemporary authority. The most recent investigations, both in Europe and on this continent, tend to produce the conviction that the phenomena of metallic fissure lodes are in some way connected with, and- dependent upon, plutonic agencies-not, however, as the direct product of volcanic activity, but rather as the result of chemical agencies called into play through its aid. Active volcanoes generally produce only the well-known types of volcanic rocks, though, perhaps, well-marked cases can be shown where these contain ores of copper, etc., evidently derived from the same deepseated source as their hypogene gangue. To prove that there is a connection between metallic lodes and plutonic rocks, it is not necessary that the ores should in all cases occupy fissures within the limits of masses of propylite, rhyolite, or other like rocks, or be

THE origin of gold both in placer deposits and in veins, and especially the origin of nuggets, has been the subject of repeated discussions and investigations, which have been recently brought to my attention by several extremely interesting specimens sent to me for examination, and more especially by the one exhibited at the meeting of the Institute in February, 1880.* In the year 1874 I made some examinations of the hydraulic mines of Califor¬nia, and was very much struck with the distribution of the gold throughout these deep placers, which were almost invariably poor on' the surface, while gradually growing richer towards" the bed¬rock. The constant presence of fossil wood, and the large quantity of organic matter contained even low down in these beds, was also remarkable. Not being satisfied with the various theories advanced to account for the formation of these deposits, I began an investiga¬tion early in the year 1879 on the conditions of solubility of gold and the causes of the loss in working gold ore in a large way: The researches which I have undertaken show that gold must be considered a soluble rather than an insoluble metal, and that the conditions of solution are such as will be found anywhere where gold is likely to occur, and the solution may take place even under the ordinary cir¬cumstances of surface drainage, and may be going on freely even where the presence of gold has never been suspected, and that there are causes enough in nature to produce the solution of the gold in sufficient quantities to account for all the phenomena of both the vein and placer formations. The general theory with regard to the formation of these placer deposits and nuggets has been that they were the result of the de¬struction of pre-existing- vein-matter, which does not accord with the facts as shown in the deep placer deposits. During the measurement of contact angle, a misty band was observed near the substrate. Hsien-Nan Ho and Shinn-Tyan Wu thought this was because the oxygen atoms on the interface migrate to the droplet surface to form an oxide band near the substrate. But from our experiments misty band appeared before the drop reach to the substrate. Theoretically speaking, the oxygen partial was the same everywhere in the vacuum furnace. So there was no condition to provide enough oxygen forming oxide. This appearance would be explained more reasonably with the optics principle. Most reflected light would be absorbed by the substrate and the light cannot reach the observation area, so the misty band formed.

The mineralogy of the primary and oxidized ores from the Malanjkhand porphyry copper deposit in India was studied to determine ore characteristics that affect metallurgy, and to assess applicable processes for recovering the copper. Three mineral assemblages were found. One occurs in primary ore, another in moderately oxidized ore, and a thir:d in intensely oxidized ore. Chalcopyrite, the main mineral in the primary ore, is relatively coarse-grained, with grain size increasing as the ore grade increases. High chalcopyrite liberations should be achieved at a relatively coarse grind, and good chalcopyrite recoveries should be obtained. The chalcopyrite, however, tarnishes readily and oXidizes to chalcocite in a relatively short time (several months). The presence of both the tarnished chalcopyrite and chalcocite may affect chalcopyrite flotation and reduce copper recoveries, The moderately oxidized ore occurs in an oxidized cap immediately above the primary ore, and stockpiled primary ore alters quickly to a moderately oxidized ore. Chalcocite is a major copper-bearing mineral in moderately OXidized ore. The concentrator processing this ore should be capable of handling a chalcocite-rich ore. The intensely OXidized ore contains a wide variety of acid-soluble copper-bearing minerals. Leaching may be required to recover the copper from them.

Griffith’s theory of brittle fracture, as modified by McClintock and Walsh to fit rock behavior in cases of failure by compression, has been successfully applied in various fields of rock mechanics. Extension of the Griffith's criterion to rock blasting problems may also be more representative of rock behavior than the simple consideration of a criterion of failure based on the dynamic tensile strength of the material. If consideration is given to pre-existing cracks within rock structure, occurring not only because of the discontinuous properties of rocks, but also as a result of drilling operations that normally precede blasting, those cracks can be propagated under the action of the dynamic stresses (radial and tangential) induced by the passage of the wave emitted by the explosion. Conditions for initiation and propagation of pre-existing cracks are deduced in terms of rock properties and explosives performance. Influence of the different variables governing the phenomenon is discussed after considering an actual example. Results seem to be well correlated with experimental evidence of radial cracking observed in blasting with high explosives acting within hard rock.

For many years these ores have been much sought, partly because they are more desirable for metallurgical treatment and partly because they are apt to be freer from gangue than is the sulphide of zinc. The Emperor vein system lies on the eastern margin of the Tavua volcanic structure. This is of Miocene age and occurs in basalts(the Mba Volcanics) probably underlain at about 2 km by calcite-rich sediments (the Vatukoro Formation). The lodes are generally flatmakes, or steep fault fillings, or complex shatter zones, and consist of quartz and altered wall rock. In areas of open cavities it is possible to establish a paragenesis which involves five quartz stages and two ore mineral stages. The first ore stage contains calaverite, krennerite, sylvanite and native tellurium, the second petzite, hessite and native gold. The quartz stages are thought to have formed slowly (102 years) from boiling solutions of low salinity at temperatures varying with time from about 250¦C to 190¦C. The system was sealed, the temperature gradient near vertical and the mass flux small. The ore mineral stages probably formed relatively rapidly (101years) from boiling solutions at 250¦ to 200¦C when the system was mainly open. Gold deposition was probably largely a result of fall in aH2S due to boiling, the calculated solution concentration falling from a maximum of about 8 ppb at 250¦C to about 8.10-3ppb at 200¦C. Boiling is also probably responsible for an increase in a02 (by loss of H2) and fall in aTe2 (by loss of H2Te). The fluids are thought to have had a large component of meteoric water and to have been heated by plutons in the core of the volcanic structure. Stable isotope data indicate that they derived their carbon from the underlying Vatukoro Formation and their sulphur from sediments. Circulation may have been confined to the outside of the volcanic structure because of the relatively low permeability of the flows, pyroclastics and dykes within it.

"TiN films have been deposited on various substrates by a novel reactive plasma technology. In this process, a nitrogen source (NH3 or N2) and TiCl4 are reacted in the jet of a plasma torch, and are deposited onto a substrate forming TiN films at a high growth rate ( > 2µm/min). It was found that the process parameters strongly affect the microstructure, thickness, density, and growth rate of the TiN films. These parameters include source of nitrogen (NH3 or N2, N/Ti ratio, temperature of substrate, and spray distance. In general, it was found that thick and dense coatings were deposited when the N:Ti ratio was kept low, and the substrate temperature was high. Also, for the series of conditions investigated, NH3 was found to give much better results than N2•. The limitations and advantages of this technique are also discussed in this paper.IntroductionTiN is an extremely hard material and is used in many wear applications, particularly as a protective coating on cutting tools to extend their Iife(1.2). Owing to its excellent chemical stability, TiN is also frequently used as a diffusion barrier in the electronics industry for sub-micron Al/TiN/Si ohmic contact systems (3) or as a coating on high-temperature resistant alloys in gas turbine applications (4), based on its good resistance to oxidation. Other applications include decorative coatings in the jewelry industry, and specialized applications such as solar energy absorbers and transparent heat mirrors(5).TiN films can be deposited/formed using various techniques. The main techniques of deposition are CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) and PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). Each of these techniques can have many variations in equipment characteristics, reactants as well as a range of process parameters (pressure and temperature). In the CVD process, TiN is generally deposited onto a heated substrate where a chemical reaction takes place. The reaction can be one of reduction(6) (e.g.: TiCI4 + 0.5N2 + 2H2 --> TiN + 4HCI), of thermal decomposition(7) (e.g. decomposition of titanium dialkylamide), or of displacement (e.g. TiCI4 + NH3 --> TiN + 3HCI + 0.5CI2)' The displacement and reduction reactions are the most common."

The formation, evolution and classification of peat bogs is discussed. Factors resulting in the internal and external morphological changes in a bog are described. The fibrous, absorptive and sterile properties of peat moss account for its widespread use in horticulture and related fields. These properties also account for its usefulness as a binder in pelletizing, as an insulating material in bat tons and in panel construction. Peat, the humijied product of peat moss is used in market gardening and sod growing. It is utilized in Europe as fuel. It is a source of activated carbon and gas. Potentially peat can be used to produce waxes, resins, tannins, cellulose, hemicellu/ ose, humic acids, lignin and hymatomelanic acid. At present other cheaper sources are available.

The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. Assaying, mineralogy, and geology appear in ancient records as early as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. Agricola was the first author to unify the earth sciences, the mineral extractive industries and the mineral processing industries. His text, De Re Metallica, published in Latin in 1556, is recognized as the first technical literature. In 1702 mining instruction was started at Freiberg, Germany. The purpose of this school was to train skilled workers, a program corresponding to present-day, on-job, vocational-technical, upgrading extension training. Formal instruction in mining engineering began at Schemnitz, Hungary, in 1763, at Freiberg, Germany, in 1766, and at St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1773. It is interesting to note that these three schools initiated instruction in mining engineering before formal instruction in civil engineering began at Paris, France, in 1775. Early mining engineering, 1763-1900, was expected to cover all eventualities in the mineral industries. Optional curricula were offered early in the 20th Century but did not reach into all branches until after World War I. Specialization crystallized during World War II under three organic units: (1) Earth Sciences; (2) Mineral Engineering; (3) Mineral Technology, the three together constituting the mineral arts and sciences of the modern world (Fig. 10).

The formulation and use of mixed collector suites in sulphide flotation can be traced back as far as 1957 with the work of Glembottskii and his co-workers in Moscow. The subject was reviewed by Lotter and Bradshaw in 2010, and proposed a synergy between ideally-selected different reagent types to deliver improved performance, in particular the in situ catalysis of a xanthate to dixanthogen by a dithiocarbamate. Correctly formulated for a particular application, an optimally arranged mixed collector suite delivers the following improvements to the flotation process: • An increase in the flotation kinetics • Improvement in coarse, or middling, particle recovery • Reduction in total dosage requirement • Best results are found from testing the ratios of the collectors. This is of critical importance. In all an optimally formulated mixed collector system usually delivers an increase in paymetals recovery of 1–4% absolute, with a gain in concentrate grade in the range 10–20% relative. In recent years, the addition of semi-conductor theory and associated electrochemistry has contributed significantly to this toolbox by way of identifying optimum domains of Eh and pH for the flotation of individual minerals. In the case of mixtures of minerals, this is where the mixed collector system delivers significant value by way of presenting a mixed set of collector radicals and dimers in a common Eh and pH domain for overall performance. This calls on a fundamental understanding of organic chemistry, mineralogy, semiconductor theory, and electrochemistry. Whereas the selection of grinding media type effectively influences the Eh, the pH can be easily controlled by pH modifiers. The theory of this system, and some industrial case studies, are discussed.

AT the McGill concentrator of the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., all flotation operations have been carried out in Forrester cells since November, 1926. In respect to cost of operation, the new cell has proved to be superior to the Callow, which it supplanted, and its incorporation in the flow sheet has resulted in a marked improvement in the metallurgy. Before citing the advantages of the new machine over the old, it should be explained that the Forrester has not only replaced the Callow, but it has made possible the elimination of a number of tables as well. When Callow cells were in use, table concentration preceded flotation. The ball mill pulp was elevated, by means of air lifts, to roughing Wilfley tables situated two floors directly above the flotation floor. On an intermediate floor were additional tables which cleaned the concentrate from those above. The finished table concentrate constituted approximately 60 per cent. of the total mill production, and contained about 40 per cent. of the recovered copper. The table tailings were returned to the classifiers, the overflow from which went to the flotation cells and the oversize to the ball mills. As soon as the Forrester cells were installed, this tabling operation was discontinued. The ball mill pulp now discharges into the classifiers direct, without the intermediate tabling. It was impracticable to employ the present flow sheet when Callow cells were in use, for the reason that unless the greater part of the heavy mineral was first removed, it accumulated on the mats and adversely affected the flotation operation. By tabling ahead of flotation, it was practicable to maintain the concentrator at 10 to 20 per cent. greater capacity (depending upon the pyrite content of the ore) than was possible by flotation alone. This was due to the necessity for finer grinding in the latter case. Even though the table concentrates contained only 6 to 8 per cent. copper content, the low smelting costs made it advantageous to operate at high mill capacity, at the cost of low grade of product.

"The Fort Knox gold deposit is hosted within the Fort Knox Pluton, a Cretaceous multiphase granitic body that intrudes the Fairbanks schist. Gold occurs along the margins of stockwork veins and veinlets, quartz-filled shear zones, and along fractures within the granite. The mineralization is generally sulphide-poor and closely associated with trace amounts of bismuth, tellurium and to a lesser extent with molybdenum and tungsten. At present, proven/probable reserve estimates, based on a cutoff grade of 0.39 g/t Au, are 158.3 million tonnes grading 0.83 g/t Au.The Fairbanks schist comprises the bulk of the country rock. The dominant lithologies present include muscovite-quartz schist and micaceous quartzite. Immediately north and south of the main orebody, mixed metamorphic lithologies of the Cleary sequence, a subunit of the Fairbanks schist, have been mapped. Development of local zones of weakness, most likely due to a broad regional warping event, resulted in brittle-ductile deformation and activation of a northwest-southeast shear couple between contrasting lithologies.The Fort Knox Pluton consists of at least three phases based primarily on textural differences. Intrusion of a fine-grained granite was followed by a medium-grained porphyritic granite. The youngest intrusive phase is a coarse-grained, seriate porphyritic granite, the Vogt Stock. The Vogt Stock forms an elongate dome with the axis in the east-west direction. Structures displayed in the overlying units, believed to be the result of doming, include tension fiSSUres and longitudinal fractures.Premineralization fractures, the result of the magmatic doming, provided conduits for initial stockwork quartz vein development and quartz enrichment in shear zones. Weak development of vein-controlled phyl/ic, potassic, albitic, and argillic alteration styles are present. Evidence of a late thermal event resulting in a low-temperature alteration assemblage of calcite + zeolite (stilbite) + chalcedony + clay occupies breccia zones, joint surfaces, and fractures within the granite."

The Fort Lawton Parallel Tunnel was built in 1990 - 1991 by Morrison Knudsen Corporation (MK) as an integral part of Seattle METRO's planned expansion of the Westpoint Treatment Plant. The project included a concrete lined 2542 m (8,340 ft) long tunnel bored in sands and clays under the presence of methane gas and over 27.4 m (90 ft) of ground water table. The tunnel roughly paral¬lels an existing and still operating 3.65 m (12 ft) diameter tunnel originally completed in 1909. The parallel tunnel was constructed using a Lovat 4.72 m (15 ft-6 in) earth pressure balanced TBM with ribs and timber lagging as primary support. The tunnel alignment crossed under as much as 91.4 m (300 ft) of overburden as well as twin mainline railway tracks; terminating in a shaft adja¬cent to the Seattle ship canal. The project was completed in June, 1991 after a final "wet-tap" tie-in to the existing brick-lined sewer; over five months ahead of the contract schedule. This paper will describe the construction methods, job site conditions and difficulties encoun¬tered on this very challenging and successful project.

The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

In a year fraught with difficulties, especially to small operators, the more stable mining organizations have shown a dynamic readiness to plunge ahead in the development of new mines, new and ingenious equipment and new tools for management to take the guesswork out of important decisions. New Mining Equipment The mining equipment display at the American Mining Congress in San Francisco demonstrated some rather radical new design concepts and a new willingness to use imagination to come up with ingenious new applications and adaptations of standard equipment.
