The construction and utilization of oil and gas pipelines is a vital aspect of the Canadian economy. The evolution of materials for this application can be considered as part of an evolutionary process in which the processing of the materials is linked to the design requirements of the pipeline. The evolution of both materials and designs will be considered in terms of parameters such as yield strength, work hardening characteristics including strain path changes such as the Bauschinger Effect and toughness. The final portion of the presentation will consider the possible uses of non-metallic materials, composites and 'smart 'systems in pipeline construction.

Africa has a long history of mining and has been one’of the world’s greatest sources of gold and other mineral resources since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs. Mining in Africa has been dominated by South Africa since World War II. However, in the past 10 to 15 years, other African countries are beginning to slowly catch up with South Africa. Ghana, formerly called the “Gold Coast” is located on the West Coast of Africa. Ghana has been involved in mining activities for well over 100 years. Most of the mining activities centered on the mining of gold and were to a large extent limited to underground mining methods. With a more liberal economic policy regarding the exploration and exploitation of Ghana’s mineral resources, mining activities are beginning to evolve to a much larger scale. Drilling and blasting which is an important aspect of this evolution is also changing due to the involvement of foreign-based mining and explosives companies.

Coal mining in the Powder River Basin has changed in recent years to accommodate the large quantity of coal produced. With strip ratios of one to one and up to three to one, extensive amounts of overburden have to be removed to get to the large thick seams of coal. Larger shovels and trucks have been implemented in the removal of this overburden. The addition of draglines and continuous miners have been added to increase the production of coal. Drills used today are capable of drilling up to 13.5 inch blast holes.

"IntroductionThe development of British Columbia's northeast coal deposits, represents the single biggest industrial undertaking in British Columbia's history.As a result of this development, several thousand jobs were created, hundreds of millions of dollars in new tax revenue and billions of dollars in new foreign exchange began flowing into Canada.The Northeast Coal Development began in 1981 with the signing of sales contracts to ship a total of 6.5 million tonnes of metallurgical and additional quantities of thermal coal annually to Japan over a 15-year period. The current long-term agreements contain provisions for extension to 20 years.The sales contracts with a group of Japanese steel mills were signed by two Vancouver-based mining companies, Quintette Coal Limited and Teck Corporation. The agreements followed years of exploration and negotiation beginning in 1968.The first shipment of coal from Quintette and Teck's Bullrnoose Mine was transported by BC Rail and Canadian National Railways to the Ridley Island coal port in the fall of 1983."

"The evolution of mining methods at Brunswick Mining and Smelting shows that, in the case of a large deposit, technology must adapt itself to changing conditions. As problems are encountered, management must modify their approach if they hope to meet production quotas. This search for new and better ways started with the opening of the No. 12 orebody and is still going on today.From large-scale open stoping, the Brunswick Mining and Smelting operation went to transversal cut-and-fill, then to longitudinal cut-and-fill, which is the main mining method now employed. However, to solve certain problems experimenting with Avoca methods was initiated. Rebar grouting and prepinning have also made significant contributions toward securing relatively poor ground in the hanging wall and holding badly fractured backs in wide stoping areas. Introduction In 1952, M.J. Boylen had incorporated Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited to develop his recently found No.6 and No. 12 orebodies near Bathurst, New Brunswick. Between 1953 and 1957, St. Joseph Lead Company was brought in to try and initiate mining . During those years, St. Joseph Lead sunk two shafts at No. 12-No. 1 to 425 feet below surface and No.2 to 982 feet. They also developed the 200 and 350 levels to sample the ore at depth and operated a 100-tpd pilot plant at the No.6 mine. However, due to low recoveries and depressed metal prices. the project was shut down in 1957.A group including M.J. Boylen. K.C. Irving. Maritime Mining Corporation and Patino Corporation reacquired the property from St. Joseph Lead Company in 1961. New financing was arranged involving La Societe Generale des Minerais, S.A . of Belgium and Engineering Consultants Limited of Saint John. New Brunswick. During the years 1962 and 1963, construction of surface and underground facilities progressed rapidly."

This paper deals with the evolution of Canadian shaft sinking technology over the last 15 years. Most, if not all, shaft excavation projects in Canada prior to 1990 were sunk using traditional benching methods with labour intensive equipment. In the late-1980s, J S Redpath Limited of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were contracted to deepen the shaft at Atomic Energy of Canada LimitedÆs Underground Research Laboratory (URL) located in southern Manitoba. The laboratoryÆs role was underground hydrological and geomechanical research, so the project offered both time and opportunity to conduct additional experiments while sinking. The offshoot of the research program was the true birth of the Canadian version of full-face, long round shaft sinking technology. Throughout the 1990s, this sinking method has been further refined over a number of shafts. The results have been faster sinking rates, a safer work environment and an overall improvement in project economics.

"With the emphasis in the past decade on larger and more efficient equipment for open-pit operations, the Normandie mine of the Asbestos Corporation has followed the trend, switching from the smaller type of percussion drills to down-the-hole rigs. One 5 Y2 -in. percussion drill is still in use, but is limited to a ""smooth blasting"" role or to the control of the slope on final benches.In keeping with the times, an attempt was made to eliminate, as much as possible, the use of high explosives and to maximize the percentage of ammonium nitrate -fuel oil mixture. As the concentration of ground water increased with increased mining depths, small pumps were initially employed for the dewatering of boreholes. This proved unsuccessful, and a hole-blowing rig was built and a conversion to plastic liners made. The acquisition of a bulk-mix AN-FO truck has permitted the changeover from an AN premix to an ammonium nitrate prill -fuel oil combination at the borehole."

The development of planning in the petroleum industry is de- scribed and the current status analyzed. Worldwide transportation networks led to corporate models which caused a differentiation between operations research and planning groups. Ranking of projects solely by ROI proved infeasible because of the diversified nature of the industry. Qualitative elements such as synergism with ongoing operations and the external socio-economic environment had to be included, leading to business plans based on scenarios of possible futures and stressing growth-opportunities over cash-flow rich mature product lines. In addition, decision analysis is finding applications in large capital, high uncertainty situations such as planning for synthetic fuel development.

"Historically, the Crinum mine has experienced significant falls of ground when longwall production slowed to prepare for recovery in weak roof areas. These conditions continue through the recovery process and result in both safety concerns and delays. When mine plans and exploration revealed that most of the mine's future longwall recoveries were located in weak roof areas, a decision was made to try pre-driven recovery roads as a solution to the problem. After completing eight pre-driven recovery roads with varying degrees of success and numerous lessons, the Crinum North mine now utilizes a modified Pre-driven Recovery Roadway (PDRR) to improve the longwall take-off process in weak roof areas. During mine development, a standard roadway is driven where the final recovery location of each longwall is planned. After the installation of secondary support, the PDRR is backfilled with a cement-flyash mix to provide support to the roof, and confinement to the ribs and floor of the roadway. The method has been refined over the last four years to provide greater strata stability and improved operational and safety performance compared with conventional take-offs at Crinum, and has resulted in a site record of longwall relocation in 11.5 days (pull mesh to picks in coal). This paper describes the evolution of the PDRRs from Crinum East to Crinum North, including lessons from initial attempts and changes to the secondary support regime, the operational approach during the final stages of retreat, the backfill strategy and plans for the future.INTRODUCTIONThe Crinum mine is the underground component of BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance's (BMA) Gregory Crinum mine, located northeast of Emerald, Queensland (Figure 1).The Crinum mine has a history of roof control problems coming into and during longwall recoveries. Weak roof, combined with the slow mining, which is a consequence of preparing for equipment recovery, pulling mesh (which also creates tip-to-face issues), and the lengthy bolt-up process, often results in loss of immediate roof and subsequent roof falls. In fact, approximately 50% of the first 13 longwall recoveries (which were at depths of 180 to 200m) experienced roof fall delays, the longest of which took four months to mine the last pillar and recover the longwall. This recurring problem prompted the mine to investigate options to reduce or eliminate the problem."

"The mining and processing of mineral ores is a very old industry which is steeped in tradition. Rising demand for metals has recently forced the exploitation of lower-grade orebodies which require extensive beneficiation. The high capital expenditures involved, together with market pressures for high-quality concentrates and pellets, have forced the development of new process technologies which are heavily dependent on automatic process control. Development of suitable instrumentation has been rapid and it is being applied to mining processes today with a high degree of sophistication. The drive for higher efficiency and profitability goes on and has reached a level at which modern digital computers appear to be the only answer. However, the efficient application of a digital process computer is extremely complicated and is therefore approached by the mining industry with considerable hesitation.Some of the benefits promised by the digital computer can be obtained today by other means, which are more manageable and can provide immediate payoff. The result would be a building-block system which would utilize the digital process computer as its final component, to perform true plant optimization, free from routine chores."

Blast performance and the resulting drawpoint condition and volume of oversize has the potential to impact operator safety and mine productivity. Underground measurements showed that approximately 14 per cent of production rings in the Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) sublevel caving (SLC) operation had either overbreak in the brow or left collars. There were also oversize rocks reporting to approximately 30 per cent of drawpoints, which accounted for over 7 per cent of total production and significantly impacted production rates. A series of trials were conducted in 2015–2016 at EHM to test changes to certain charge parameters in an attempt to optimise blasting results and, in particular, reduce oversize and overbreak. The detailed analysis conducted included field observations, hole surveying, blast monitor analysis and blast modelling. There were a total of nine charge parameters tested in the project, which fell into two major categories: energy distribution and inter-hole delay. These were based on observations made in establishing baseline data and those parameters most likely to have a significant impact on overbreak and oversize.Key results from the project included oversize reduction and improved brow conditions when energy distribution was reduced through changing charge lengths in certain holes in the standard charge plan. Similar benefits were also seen when the inter-hole delay between blastholes was reduced from 50 ms to 25 ms. Based on these results both changes were made to the standard production ring charge plan at EHM.Moving forward, the aim is to continue monitoring the results from the changes made on all levels to ensure efficiencies are being realised and sustained. A 3 per cent improvement in oversize as a percentage of total tonnes and improved brow conditions not only has a positive impact on production rates, but removes people from any potentially hazardous situations and contributes to a safer working environment.CITATION:te Kloot, C and Liu, Z, 2017. Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and Ståhlbröst, H, 2017. The Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) in Queensland, Australia is a Sub-level Caving operation that started production below the previously mined open pit at a depth of 535m. Current Production mining has progressed to a depth of 730m, with planned production mining to extend down to at least 1000m below surface. The inclined nature and geometry of the orebody combined with geological structures provides for challenging mining conditions. Over several years, Ernest Henry Mine has introduced measures to improve outcomes based on observations, monitoring and data analysis. As mining progresses deeper, EHM will continue to proactively take steps to ensure future outcomes are anticipated and mining can continue safely and uninterrupted. The focus of this paper is on the changes in seismic- and stress-driven behaviour of the rockmass experienced at EHM, the ground control measures implemented, and the anticipated future conditions and controls required. "Solidification systems from conduction controlled freezing of a pure material through to alloy phase change that include flow and segregation processes are described. The components in a general solidification model-variables, governing transport equations, and local scale relationship-are outlined. A central focus is the presentation of an explicit procedure for coupling between macroscopic and local scale variables.IntroductionSince the seminal work of Byres et al.[!] in the 1940's there has been a steady progress in modeling solidification systems with increasing levels of complexity. Backfil ling of excavated Sub Level Open Stopes has been underway since March 1989 and as at December 1992 some 1 100 000 cubic metres of Cemented Aggregate Fill have been placed. During these three years significant developments in fill quantities, types and cost have taken place.Operational improvements have reduced the quantity of Cement Aggregate Fill by 40 per cent. These results have been achieved by:ò rescheduling stopes,ò designing smaller primary stope, and ò use of uncemented rockfill.Unit cost for Cement Aggregate Fill have fallen in the order of 50 per cent through:improving fill hole reli ability,simplified barricade construction procedures, reducing the cement content,ò substituting dune sand for deslimed mill tailings, ò improved maintenance at the Backfill plant, and ò renegotiated site freight agreement.This paper will review the historical developments of backfill use at Olympic Dam.

Underground fractured aquifers in the Ernest Henry deposit are to a large extent controlled by deposit scale brittle structures. The underground mine has been subdivided into nine water zones based on hydrogeological characteristics, including conductivity and connectivity, within the mining areas bound by these structures. The nine water zones and the hydrological characteristics of the associated structures are utilised for risk assessing mine development and for targeting diamond drilling dewatering activities. Wireline and conventional underground diamond drilling techniques have been used throughout the network of underground aquifers with the aim of dewatering areas within the mining footprint. These dewatering drilling campaigns have historically been highly successful at lowering aquifer water levels throughout the underground workings. As part of recent mine expansion activities, diamond drilling has intersected high pressure (>507 psi), high temperature (>50°C) and high flow water (>3 L/sec) in as yet unconstrained underground aquifers. Groundwater is typically conducted through rubble and clay rich faults, further hampering progression of drilling. Drilling through fractured aquifers at depth presents both mine planning as well as safety challenges. Recent drill holes have been delayed or abandoned when aquifers hosting this high pressure, high flow water have been intersected, risking mine planning deadlines. Recent technological innovation developed to control groundwater outflows from the diamond drill hole whilst drilling has been trialled at the Ernest Henry Mine. This case study focuses on the utilisation of alternative drill methodologies to allow the current drilling campaign to continue without delay, whilst also improving safety conditions encountered on the drill site.

Several technical and economic factors have to be taken into consideration in developing an optimal mining method. This paper describes some of the important factors learnt during the evolution of the sublevel cave mining method at Trojan Nickel Mine, part of the Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) in Zimbabwe. Sublevel caving (SLC) has been successfully implemented at Trojan mine since its introduction in 1994. The method has evolved over the past six years into a system that has brought about improvements in efficiencies and productivity. Although the original design parameters used were sound and provided a solid foundation for the system, they needed to be optimised to get the best out of the mining method. Improvements and changes have been made in areas such as the drilling process, charging and blasting techniques, ring pattern design, development size and shape, and the draw control system. This has enabled the mine to develop an SLC operation that is efficient and innovative. Experience gained, together with the theory available has given us a much better understanding of the system. This knowledge will be used in the future to enhance the system further. Given the low grades of the BNC Mines, management recognises that only through technical excellence and efficient mining can the mines reduce mining costs and maintain profitability and competitiveness on the world market. In the Zimbabwe mining industry reaction to technological change, mechanisation and advancement have been relatively slow, due to isolation and economic constraints, compared to the rest of the world. Economic difficulties prevail, with high inflation levels, a poor exchange rate, lack of foreign currency and other associated problems. Despite these constraints, the bold steps taken have transformed Trojan mine into a more efficient and competitive operation, presenting itself as the leading mine in the BNC group. Appendices give data to illustrate the benefits obtained.

The influence of rolling temperature and annealing on the recrystallization and texture of magnesium AZ31 has been investigated. 100x125x6 mm AZ31 plate was cast in a permanent steel mould and then homogenized at 380°C. As-cast and homogenized microstructures were then characterized, and 35x30x6 mm specimens were machined from the homogenized material. Specimens were rolled up to 40% at temperatures between 25 and 350°C; selected specimens were subsequently annealed at 400°C. Following rolling, the microstructures were compared. The influence of rolling temperature on as-rolled texture has been demonstrated, and texture evolution has been evaluated following annealing. The recrystallization behavior has also been characterized. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) were used to characterize the microstructures of the alloys. X-ray texture analysis was used to investigate the texture in as-rolled and annealed specimens.

The Concentrator 1 plant at Cadia transitioned from Cadia Hill open pit to the Cadia East block cave ore body in 2013. As a result of this change, major plant upgrades were required to achieve the desired throughput while treating more competent ore. The 40-foot (40’) SAG mill now receives a feed of predominantly high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) product with a minor component of secondary crushed ore at a combined F80 of 17 mm. The significant reduction in feed size to the SAG mill has markedly changed the operating characteristics of the mill, which has been extensively studied since commissioning in 1998.This paper examines the operation of the 40’ SAG mill in its new configuration in the Concentrator 1 circuit. Operational stability is highlighted as a significant factor in delivering mill performance, which has been achieved through several key improvement projects utilising a theory of constraints framework. Five years of successful project implementation has progressively lifted the maximum processing rate of Concentrator 1 from the design estimate of 2455 t/h to above 3000 t/h.
