The addition of a thallous salt to the cyanide leach of a calcined pyritic concentrate causes a marked increase in the"rate of extraction of gold. This probably is due to the activation of passive gold by.th,e. thallous ions'.''Lea'd, bismuth, and mercury salts, which should produce ' a, similai effect, fail to do so. It is postulated that'this latter result, together with'the reprecipitation of silver at low cyanide levels, is due to the presence of soluble sulphide. The use of thallous salts to reduce leaching time is discussed briefly.

The evaluation of the effect of the addition of carbon nanotubes (NTCs) directly to a etheramine on the flotation recovery of the quartz at pH 10.5 was carried out by means of microflotation tests in Hallimond tube. The quartz flotation was evaluated using 0.1% (w/v) etheramine solution with different percentages of carboxylic functionalized NTCs. The increase in the percentage of functionalized NTCs increased the flotation recovery to a maximum and from this it was observed a reduction of the recovery of the mineral. Pure etheramine and etheramine with the NTCs were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. FTIR spectra of both pure etheramine and etheramine with NTCs clearly showed peaks with the same wavelengths and diagnostics of the cation etheramine and acetate anion. Thermogravimetry indicated that the etheramine + NTCs-COOH mixture lost approximately the same weight percentage over a larger temperature range. In addition, the interaction of the nanotubes with the etheramine caused them to decompose at a lower temperature.

The mining industry continues to be a major driver of the Australian economy generating over A$130 billion in export earnings in 2008/2009. However, the industry has been cited as a significant contributor to green house gas emissions. Australia's proposed carbon trading scheme, the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) will financially impact on mining operations; this calls for a holistic planning approach for mining operations taking into account the impact of the emissions trading scheme. Since carbon trading is a new area of study, particularly within Australia, the quantitative effect of the CPRS on the mining industry is uncertain and current mine planning practices do not directly consider emissions. This paper presents results of the study into the impact of the CPRS on a hypothetical large scale open pit operation, using a spreadsheet model based on linear programming and simulation. By varying the production rates, life of mine (LOM), carbon price and ore grades among other variables several scenarios were simulated to determine the impact of emissions trading scheme on the net present value of the project. This study found that the adoption of the proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme could impact mining operations in Australia by a three per cent to six per cent reduction in net present value, for carbon credit costs of $25/t to $50/t respectively. While the six per cent reduction in net present value for a mining operation is significant, rising fuel prices have had a similar effect in recent years. The most energy-intensive processes are the milling circuit and the flotation concentrator circuit. These processes are jointly responsible for up to 60 per cent of the total emissions, depending on the production rate and the level of offshore processing conducted. Clearly, the introduction of the CPRS makes it is imperative for mining companies to assess the impact of carbon emissions on a mining project during mine planning.

"The bubble size distribution plays a fundamental role in flotation kinetics. Nowadays it is possible to measure the bubble size distribution, gas holdup and superficial gas velocity by using specialized equipment developed for this purpose. In this article a methodology is presented for estimating the kinetic rate constant using a known particle and bubble size distributions. The attachment and detachment probabilities were modelled from three matrixes. The first matrix represents particle size distribution, the second was named the probability matrix, and the third is the bubble size distribution. Using laboratory data, it has been possible to estimate the flotation rate constant as a function of operating conditions and both the bubble and particle size distributions. The model tested at laboratory scale achieved a quadratic correlation coefficient equal to 0.97. This methodology could be used in the operation and control of the flotation, when in the near future we have industrial equipment that allows in-line measurement, in real time, of gas dispersion and bubble size distribution. knowing particle size distribution, it will be possible to manipulate the operating flotation cell conditions, in order to modify the bubble size distribution and find the bubble distribution that maximizes flotation kinetics. Furthermore, knowing the bubble size distribution, the grinding operator will be able to look for the particle size distribution that produces the maximum flotation kinetics. In order to do this, the operator will have to modify the solids percentage fed to the hydrocyclone cluster, modify the apex/vortex ratio, etc. Finally, this article shows that the maximum flotation speed is reached when the particle size distibution slope is equal to the bubble size distribution slope."

The paper describes work undertaken to identify the influence of the matrix structure on the metal dusting rate of stainless steel alloys. Specifically, the difference in metal dusting rate between austenitic and ferritic stainless steels of similar chromium contents was investigated. The alloys were exposed to metal dusting conditions and their performance compared by weight loss, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectroscopy. The specific gas mixture used for all the tests were 18.9% CO-79.1% H2-2% H2O at 650°C. For austenitic stainless steels, Types 304, 321, 316, and 316Ti were compared to two ferritic grades, namely Types 430 and 441. The resistance of the ferritic grades was found to be significantly better than that of the austenitic grades. This was attributed to greater permeability of chromium through the matrix structure to maintain the protective oxide scale. The results will be used in the development of novel alloys to combat metal dusting.

The mineralogy of the platinum group metals is fairly complex, and it is therefore not surprising that the different minerals have variable responses to metallurgical processes, in particular, flotation and leaching. The PLATSOL® leach process was developed to extract simultaneously base metals, gold and platinum group metals from various materials. Extensive research has indicated that most PGM?s were amenable to the PLATSOL process, with the notable exception of cooperite PtS. Further work showed that a thermal pretreatment at 500-700ºC transformed the structure of the cooperite and similar refractory minerals (Pt,Pd)S into Pt metal and Pt-Pd alloys that responded well to the PLATSOL® process. Examples are presented of the mineralogy of PGM concentrates as produced, in the residue from the PLATSOL® leach and after thermal pretreatment.

The effect of the overflow to underflow (O/U) flowrate ratio of a dense medium cyclone on its performance is tested utilizing a 6" dense medium cyclone and density tracers. The results show that the O/U flowrate ratio is clearly correlated with the separation cut point D50, the separation efficiency Ep, the density differential 0, and short circuiting of the cyclone. Within certain limits, a higher O/U ratio results in a better separation efficiency, a higher D50 and an increased density differential. A lower O/U ratio, on the other hand, reduces the cut point shift and density differential. The phenomenon of short circuiting to the underflow, which is especially significant for fine particles, is directly connected with an excessively low O/U ratio.

Froth flotation is well-established and efficient in the selective separation of valuable particles from unwanted material with sizes ranging from 10 μm to 200 μm. However, when it comes to the separation of ultrafine particles (< 10 μm) there are still some challenges, or rather opportunities. This research aims at developing a method for the separation of ultrafine particles based on multiple particle properties. Amongst such properties are wettability, morphology (shape or roughness) and size with applications not only in mineral processing but in general chemical engineering. In this study, three differently shaped fractions are used as valuables for testing: spherical particles, elongated particles and irregularly shaped particle fragments; together with ultrafine magnetite as the gangue material, in order to investigate the effect of particle morphology on ultrafine particle flotation, as well as wettability, which is varied by esterification using alcohols. Flotation tests are carried out using a novel flotation device that was designed especially for the flotation of ultrafine particles, combining advantages from machine-type froth flotation and column flotation. The results showed that, in contrast to previous studies, recoveries for ultrafine spheres were higher than for ultrafine fragments for all wettability conditions, and hydrophobisation generally increased particle recoveries for said morphologies. Tests using fibres showed different behaviour as hydrophobisation had negative effects on their recovery, despite increased selectivities and kinetics. These findings suggest that apart from influences of particle properties within the suspension zone, their effects on the froth characteristics should be studied in more depth. THE effect of copper on steel has been studied by numerous investigators. Before modern testing methods had been developed, blacksmiths noted red shortness in iron, the cause for which was ascribed to the presence of copper. Numerous papers have been published on the corrosion of steels containing various amounts of copper, and a few writers have discussed the effect of copper on the mechanical properties of steel. The purpose of the investigation described in the following paper was to obtain additional data on the mechanical properties of medium-carbon steel containing small quantities of copper. Among those who have published results of mechanical tests on copper steels are Ball,1 who states that copper increases the tensile strength and &apos;hardness but lowers the elongation. Stead2 states that copper steels closely resemble nickel steels containing equivalent percentages of nickel,, as regards tensile strength, resistance to shock, corrosion and hardness. Wigham 5 found that copper in small amounts had no injurious effect on steel. Breuil4 found that with 1 per cent. carbon, copper lessened the brittleness of steel and in low-carbon steel it increased the tensile strength and lowered the ductility slightly. H. H. Campbell 5 states that copper up to 0.25 per cent. slightly raises the elastic limit, elongation and reduction of area.

FRANK N. SPELLER,? Pittsburgh,. Pa.-Mr. -Hayward&apos;s paper again draws attention to the fact that copper in steel is not the enemy that a good many of us it one time thought it was. He shows clearly that steel with over 0.75 per cent. of copper is as dependable, under the :conditions which he describes, as the same steel without copper. I might add that you-can weld copper-steel- satisfactorily up to that point; in fact, we have succeeded in welding pipe by the lap weld process up to 1 per cent. copper. Notwithstanding the date that have been presented on the effects of copper on the physical properties and corrosion of steel, a maximum copper limitation is still found in many specifications. In some cases the limit is extremely low, such as below 0.05 .or 0.03: per cent., or thereabout. That is a relic of days gone by, and I think the practice should be discouraged. E. F. This study examines the surface alteration and flotation behaviour of synthetic moncheite, PtPd(BiTe)2, in the presence of pentlandite. The telluride minerals contribute around 20% ~ 30% and up to 45% of the PGM present in the Platreef ore and are considered to be slow floating as there is evidence of these minerals reporting to the tailings. It was proposed that oxidation products from other minerals and grinding media would affect the mineral surface composition and floatability thereby causing inadvertent depression of moncheite due to precipitating ions. ToF-SIMS analyses (time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to characterise the mineral surface as well as the extent of surface alteration. Microflotation was used to deter-mine the hydrophobicity of the synthetic minerals. Conditioning of moncheite in the presence of pentlandite reduced the flotation response of the + 38 -106µm size fraction from > 99% to 56%. This was due to pentlandite dissolution products (iron and nickel hydroxy species) which formed overlayers on the mineral surfaces thereby inhibiting the adsorption of collector. In addition, further grinding of these samples, with and without pentlandite conditioning showed a negative effect on recovery due to the fineness of the particle size distribution and there was no advantage gained from any possible exposure of fresh sites in the sample.

Three coal samples, selected out of eight with well characterized surface properties, were used in flocculation tests and synthetic mixture of coal and silica was used in the selective flocculation experiments. Coal wettability and flocculant type were found to have a strong effect on the flocculation results.

The South African Minerals Development Act (?the Act?) has been promulgated and will come into full force and effect once it is gazetted. Thereafter, all Old Order mineral rights will have to be converted into New Order mineral rights within a 5-year period, probably by the end of 2008. The conversion of rights will be achieved only with the demonstrated inclusion of empowerment groups in the conversion applications. In addition to the Act, the first draft of the proposed Royalty Bill (?the Bill?) was released during the week beginning 17 March 2003. Comments on the Bill?s contents had to be submitted before 30 April 2003. The contents were to be considered in terms of applicability and acceptability to the South African minerals industry, where after proposed comments and suggested amendments were to be submitted to the relevant State Treasury office. Specifically referring to the Bill, the general response from the industry is one of concern. Since any royalty is tantamount to a tax, the general feeling is that the current mining taxation rates are already internationally competitive and to increase these effective rates, notably at differing rates depending on commodity type, will have an adverse impact on the South African mining industry. A number of these impacts can be mitigated to some degree, depending on the flexibility of the State to address the major concerns.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

Chalcopyrite is the most abundant copper sulfide mineral, which is normally processed using pyrometallurgical methods (i.e., smelting) to produce copper metal. Smelting has several major disadvantages, such as high gas-handling costs, high capital costs, saturation of sulfuric acid market, and inability to treat low-grade concentrates and to recover some by-products, such as zinc, nickel and cobalt. The development of hydrometallurgical processes for chalcopyrite is desirable to overcome the problems of smelting. Because chalcopyrite is refractory, the leaching rate for chalcopyrite is very low. Therefore, increasing the leaching rate has been extensively investigated, both in sulfate and chloride media, as well as in the presence of bacteria. Chloride leaching processes have shown relatively high leaching rates. The mechanism of the chloride leaching process has been investigated, but the behavior of chalcopyrite leaching in chloride solution is not clear. Therefore, the effect of the solution redox potential on the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in chloride solution was investigated. In the present study, leaching experiments were carried out using 0.1 M chloride solutions and the results indicate that high leaching rates of chalcopyrite can be achieved at relatively low solution redox potentials.

Metallurgical results for the copper-nickel disseminated ores were improved by using ultrasonic treatment. This has been demonstrated by processing of bubble-pulp flow in the reactor zone of a reactor-separator flotation machine. It can be explained by changes in mineral and size composition of the concentrates. Thus, the selectivity of Cu/Ni flotation for different values of the hydrodynamic parameter increases considerably. Additional effect of the ultrasound treatment has been noticed under conditions when the detachment of the gangue minerals from bubbles can be controlled. Reactor-separator has advantages over other types of flotation cells for this purpose. In fact, the weak diameter of reactors make more efficient the ultrasound effect than in conventional impeller or column flotation machines. A combination of ultrasonic treatment with original organization of gas pulp flux in the reactor-separator allows to obtain significant effects in the flotation attachment/detachment subprocesses, enhancing the process selectivity and/or recovery of substances. Increase of total recovery of copper and nickel into bulk concentrate at constant grade is 8.5% for coarse disseminated ores. For copper ore, copper recovery increased by 10% at unchanged grade of 11.7% and nickel recovery gained 17% at the constant grade of 2%.

In transitional mineralization, the sill of the underlying variogram is relatively easily estimated, but the estimation of the nugget effect may be more difficult. This study aims to determine for massive copper deposits just how sensitive the estimations of ore reserve, economic copper content, total net value, and ultimate pit limits are to the errors of estimation in the nugget effect of the spherical variogram model. A massive copper deposit which has a log-normal distribution and a spherical variogram was simulated on a rectangular grid using the turning bands method. By using the three dimensional random kriging method, the mean block grades were estimated at four different sampling densities. The ultimate pit-limits were determined by using the two-dimensional dynamic programming algorithm. To calculate the estimation errors, the values obtained by using the actual nugget effect and structured component values were deducted from the estimations obtained using the incorrect nugget effect and structured component values. For isotropic massive copper deposits, it was found that the ratio of the nugget effect to the structured component of the spherical variogram has no significant effect on either the block grades estimated by the kriging method or on the ultimate pit limits.

The dewatering of coal, and particularly fine coal, continues to challenge coal prepatration engineers to find a cost-effective solution. With known world oil reserves being depleted daily, it is envisaged that the future price of coal may justify the use of thermal drying to achieve lower coal product moisture levels. The effect of exposure of the coal to elevated toemperatures on the mechanical strength of the coal was investigated. It was found that temperature does not play a major role in determining the volume breakage of a particle and that other variables such as orientation during impact has a much greater influence. A double breakage mechanism was reported during the grindability tests. Surface, as well as volume breakage, occurs for the first 4 minutes while only surface breakage takes place thereafter. Due to this double breakage action, it was found that exposure to temperature does play a role in the amount of breakage and breakage rates during grindability tests. It was also concluded that a particle will break to an optimum size due to impact, after which only its surface will grind away as it is subjected to breakage forces.

With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the very fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive but it leads to greater losses in &apos;slimes&apos;. In the early 1970&apos;s, 50% of the tin mined in Bolivia, 30% of the phosphate mined in Florida and 20% of the world&apos;s tungsten were lost in this way (Somasundaran, 1979). Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25-50µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Two approaches can be adopted to try to overcome this problem. The first involves increasing the efficiency of existing equipment or developing new slimes treatment processes. Gravity devices such as the Bartles-Mozley concentrator have been developed for this purpose and good recovery has been reported from 100µm down to 5µm. Such machines, however, have relatively low throughputs, so that large areas of plant space are generally required. Flotation is rapidly growing in importance for the treatment of ultra-fine minerals traditionally treated by gravity concentration.
