An alternative stoping method has been adopted for narrow vein stoping at the Tasmania Mine in Northern Tasmania. Colloquially described as ‘Radial-in-Reef’ (RiR) stoping, the method employs the drilling of radial rings in the plane of the Reef from a drill stub located at the geographic centre of the proposed stope panel.Production from the Western Zone of the Tasmania Reef has been undertaken remotely from the Reef since 2007, after a detailed geotechnical engineering analysis indicated that the integrity of the sill drives could not guarantee an acceptable level of confidence should an anticipated seismic event occur within a radius of 10 m. The key tenet of the remote mining approach was the exclusion of personnel from sill drives once stoping had commenced. The remote mining method had to be ‘retrofitted’ to four existing stoping blocks totalling 11 sill drives which totalled 160 m vertically. The remote mining method proved to be complex, cumbersome and very expensive. However, the ore was extracted successfully.By early 2010, previously developed ore had largely been exhausted and the future development with an orebody open at depth presented the opportunity to review the current extraction method. However, the new extraction method needed to maintain the tenet of excluding personnel from sill drives of active stoping blocks, but seek opportunities to reduce the difficult and costly aspects of the previous method. The new ‘Radial-in-Reef’ stoping reduced the development requirement from six to two drives per ore block. Cost implications aside, the significant reduction in prestoping extraction ratio was expected to also reduce the likelihood of seismicity. Transverse production rings were designed to be drilled radially from a drill stub mined from a mid-stope footwall drive. Stopes totalling up to 7000 tonnes were planned be fired in a single electronic blast. Extraction was designed to take place from a basal sill drive under teleremote operation. At the time of writing, the method was under trial.

INTRODUCTION The major mining operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located in the Sudbury Basin. Around the rim of this geo- logical formation and within thirty miles of the City of Sudbury are located eleven under- ground mines of the Company, two of which are on standby. In addition, there is one mine in Northwestern Ontario at Shebandowan, 1127 Km (700 miles) northwest of Sudbury. In 1980 ore production totalled 10.6 x 10 mt (11.7 million tons) from underground and open pit operations. Underground mining methods include blasthole, vertical retreat, sublevel caving, cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill. Inco reduction operations in the Sudbury area include two concentrators, one smelter, one iron ore recovery plant, a copper refinery a nickel refinery and a high purity plate rolling mill. As well, an electrolytic nickel refinery is located on Lake Erie at Port Colborne, near Niagara Falls. In the Sudbury District, Inco employees total 14,278 of whom 6,490 are directly employed in the mining and milling operations. I T H DRILLING Background - The use of long blastholes in underground operations at Inco mines in the Sudbury district started more than 30 years ago at the Levack Mine. At that time, diamond drills were used to mine ore by open stoping and for pillar recovery. By the 1950's the concept had been extended to all mines. The heavy percussion drill was also developed by this time and led to the acceptance of the 11.43 cm (4% in.) piston diameter drifter for bar and arm and fan drill applications. The use however, of the nominal 5.08 cm (2 in.) diameter blastholes drilled radially from the level or sublevel causes overdrilling at the periphery. As well, the smaller holes are subject to hole deviation, are difficult to drill beyond 38.1 m (125 ft.) and require the need for several drilling horizons or sublevels. The need to improve blasthole stoping techniques and our experience with large diameter blastholes in open pit mining led to the trial of an I T H drill in 1962. The test was unsuccessful however, since button bits were not available at the time and the tungsten carbide cross bit experienced short life, gauge loss, and caused hole deviation and poor penetration rates. The successful application of the raise borer beginning in 1964 and the ability to drill 20.32 cm (8 in.) to 27.94 cm (11 in.) diameter pilot holes led to the development of smaller, more portable, rotary drills for blasthole mining. As a result, a mining method based on the use of 20 cm (7 718 in.) diameter, 60.1 m (200 ft.) long rotary blastholes was developed and tested successfully at our C.C.North Mine. Between 1972, when the method was first tested, and 1973 over 4572 m (15000 ft.) of large holes were drilled with rotary drills in the recovery of 175,960 mt (194000 tons) of primary stoping and pillar remnants. A new mining method was developed that made use of this large hole drilling equipment. Instead of longhole carbide drilling by bar-and-arm or fan drill set-ups at sublevels, the large diameter holes were drilled full stope height from the top sill, which substantially reduced development, drilling time and improved fragmentation. These drills however, were difficult to move and set-up, and had a high maintenance cost and low productivity. The capital outlay and extensive technical development required to improve these drills and reduce the high drilling costs however, was economically unattractive. FOREWORD This paper is based on the authors' experience gained in the environmental assessment of major uranium projects in the former Department of Science and the Environment and Department of Home Affairs and Environment of the Australian Government. The views expressed in the paper are those of the authors alone and not the Australian Government or Dames & Moore. INTRODUCTION Uranium has been mined in Australia since 1954. A number of small scale mining and milling operations were active in the Northern Territory, in South Australia and in Queensland in the late fifties and early sixties. However, in the late sixties there was an increase in exploration activities in the expectation of an upsurge in world demand for uranium Substantial new resources were delineated in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The most significant deposits were located in the Northern Territory, in what is called the Alligator Rivers Region located approximately 200 km east of Darwin. The Region is in the latitude of 13° South and thus lies within the Australian tropics (Figure 1). It consists of approximately 2.3 million hectares of natural wilderness containing much spectacular and attractive scenery. The area is noted for its abundant wildlife, particularly the waterbirds that gather on the flood-plains. Much of the vegetation is diverse and interesting. The Aboriginal population still maintains elements of the traditional way of life, and the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment contains many of the best surviving examples of Aboriginal rock art. Numerous rich archaeological sites provide evidence of continuous human habitation for tens of thousands of years. Climatically, the Region is of the tropical monsoon type with a dry season from may to September and a "wet" from November to March. High intensity short period rainfall is characteristic, and the average annual precipitation is in the order of 1 350 mm. The monthly mean temperature ranges from 25° to 30°C throughout the year. The development of regulatory controls on uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region has been affected by the political status of the Northern Territory. While Australia is a federation, established as an independent self-governing country in 1901, it was not until 1978 that the Northern Territory became to any real extent self-governing. Prior to 1978, the Territory was administered through a special department of the Commonwealth (ie. the Federal Government). Under the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978, administrative powers similar to those possessed by the Governments of the six founding Australian states were provided to the Territory Government. However, the Commonwealth government did not transfer to the Territory all such powers and functions, and in particular there has been, since 1978, a dual role for the Commonwealth and Territory Governments in the regulation of uranium development. Details of this role are provided later in this paper. RANGER URANIUM INQUIRY By 1973, major deposits had been discovered in the Alligator Rivers Region at Nabarlek, Ranger, Koongarra and Jabiluka. The estimated reserves and mine life expectancy of these deposits are given in Table I. Other radioactive anomalies have also been identified in the area but, as yet, they have not been delineated or evaluated. [ ] In 1974, an agreement was signed between the Commonwealth Government and Peko Mines Limited and the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited for the joint development of the Ranger deposit. In July 1975, the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry under the provisions of the Commonwealth Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974, into the proposed Ranger development. The inquiry was known as the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry or more commonly, the Fox Inquiry after the presiding Commissioner, Mr Justice Fox.

"The requirement for the reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from copper smelters is becoming more and more important. Therefore, the most important question in smelting technology will be how to produce even, high strength SO2 gas in smelter and how to combine smelting and converting. The best sorution in certain cases is to eliminate converters totally.Outokumpu is already responding to this challenge. As a result of extensive research work, Outokumpu Oy has developed the Flash Smelting Process for direct smelting of blister copper from concentrates in one step.The newest process development is the Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process, where solidified copper matte is converted into blister copper. The production of low volume high SO2 content gases, separation of smelting and converting operations to allow increased on-line availability, and simplified process control are the major benefits of the process which translates to reduced smelter capital and operating costs.Also, it has been studied the use of the same Outokumpu furnace for smelting and converting alternately when the production capacity is low.In this paper, the developments and improvements of the Outokumpu Process are described from the operation and investment cost standpoints"

Mount Isa Mine should be regarded as a large mining complex rather than one mine. This arises from the geography, variety and extent of the orebodies, the mining methods, and the use of 14 shafts for ventilation distribution. A brief resume is presented here since comprehensive descriptions of lead-zinc mining methods {11}, copper mining methods {2 }{3}, geology 241, stope fill {5} and ventilation techniques {6}{7}, have all been published in the last five years. Mining extends over a north-south strike length of 2.5 miles (4 Ian) with a maximum width across dip approaching 3 200 ft (1 Ian). Current mining is to a depth of 3 150 ft (960 m) with the ore hoisting shafts extending 660 ft (200 m) deeper. The composite longitudinal section, Figure 1, shows a representational disposition of the copper and lead-zinc-silver orebodies in the central shaft complex where the main service and hoisting shafts are located. To the south the X41 man and materials shaft provides access to the copper area. The mine layout is typical of high tonnage track- less mines, utilising a large diesel fleet, raise- borers and some large diameter hole stope drilling. Mining methods include sublevel open stoping, slot and massfire, and a trial vertical crater retreat in the copper ore, and sublevel caving, sublevel open stopes with and without rib pillar recovery, and mechanised cut and fill in the numerous lead orebodies. All ore reports to one of the three crushing systems located below 19 level in the central shaft complex. Copper ore is hauled exclusively along the 19 level computer assisted Rockflo haulage system, and lead-zinc-silver ores report via central orepasses from Granby haulages on 13 level and 15 level. Tonnages hoisted during the 1977178 financial year were 5.0 million for copper at 3.2%. and 2.3 million for lead-zinc-silver at 7.8%. 6.3% and 7.06 oz/ton (216 g/tonne) respectively.

Almost 90 % of phosphate in Indonesia is consumed for natural and manufactured fertilizers, while the rest is used in chemical industries. The consumption of phosphate always increases each year, while Indonesian phosphate production is almost constant at around 75,000 tons annually, except the production in 1988 was 165,000 tons. Due to the limited amount of domestic production, the imported phosphate is increasing each year. Phosphate trading in Indonesia is unique. Some of the domestic production is exported to Taiwan, while phosphate from USA, Morocco, Jordan and Nauru is imported. Indonesian phosphate includes guano phosphate, caving phosphate and small amount of marine phosphate sediment. Problems with Indonesian phosphate include: scattered deposits in difficult locations and a relatively small amount of reserves. Exploitation of phosphate deposits for domestic purpose has a good prospect, mainly because of the rapidly increasing phosphate demand as natural fertilizer or as a raw material for manufacturing fertilizer to support an agricultural sector.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in subdivision of the three interfingering basin-wide megafacies previously recognised in the Early to Middle Devonian Fanning River Group. Eleven carbonate and siliciclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, shoreline, nearshore, and shallow marine shelf depositional environments. The facies reflect two phases of a major transgression. An initial phase, in the Early Devonian, was confined to the far north of the basin, whereas a second, main phase, resulted in the encroachment of the sea from the east or southeast in the Middle Devonian.The proposed depositional model begins with the drowning of a coastal plain and the transgression of shoreline and nearshore facies between granitic and metamorphic headlands and/or islands. This was followed by the deposition of a patch reef and fringing reef complex including stromatoporoid and coral bioherms, biostromes, and oncolitic, crinoidal, and brachiopod-dominated banks/shoals, together with foreslopes and submarine channels, carbonate rubble deposits and terrigenous sediments. Sedimentation during the peak of the transgression was dominated by sheltered carbonate shelf facies, the maximum, flooding surface being recognisable across most of the Burdekin Basin. Progradation of muddy and sandy nearshore bay and shoreline facies soon followed, terminating carbonate deposition.

Remapping of the Burdekin Basin has resulted in the subdivision of the three formations (megafacies) previously recognised in the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. Nine dominantly volcaniclastic facies are now identified within the three megafacies, representing coastal plain, floodplain lake, alluvial plain, ephemeral lake and alluvial fan depositional environments. The Dotswood Group was deposited during a major regressive phase that began at the end of the Givetian, continued throughout the Frasnian and ended in the early Famennian.The proposed depositional model completes a southeasterly progradation of coastal plain facies over shoreline and nearshore marine facies established in the underlying Fanning River Group. Uplift and associated acid-intermediate volcanism to the south of the Burdekin Basin, resulted in the deposition of a volcanogenic alluvial fan facies locally preserved along the southwestern margin of the basin. Tuffs and ?ignimbrite were deposited in widespread floodplain lakes which lay behind the coastal plain. An alluvial plain traversed by southward flowing rivers, formed the northern margin of the basin.

Regional geological mapping and facies analysis of the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous Keelbottom Group of the Burdekin Basin have resulted in a depositional model representing six siliciclastic-carbonate facies. The six facies represent alluvial fan, braidplain delta, siliciclastic shoreline, siliciclastic shallow marine, restricted siliciclastic/carbonate shelf, and carbonate shoal depositional environments. These facies are identified in the Star beds which are equated with and included in the Keelbottom Group in this paper. Facies are repeated throughout the Group, as a result of two transgressive-regressive cycles.The first transgression recognised in the Keelbottom Group began in the mid-Famennian, and followed deposition of the Late Devonian Dotswood Group. It was marked by the deposition of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the basal Myrtlevale Formation, which was succeeded by Siliciclastic Shallow Marine facies at the peak of the transgression. The return of Siliciclastic Shoreline facies in the upper part of the Myrtlevale Formation marked the onset of the first regression, which resulted in the progradation of Braidplain Delta facies from the northwest of the basin. During the peak of this regression, deposition in the western part of the basin was dominated by Alluvial Fan facies.

Mining operations generate Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) that poses a significant threat to the natural environment. AMD treatment using Ca(OH)2 leads to the precipitation of a sludge dominated by a mixture of ferri-oxyhydroxides. This sludge has poor dewatering tendencies and is deposited in landfills with potential for metal remobilization. This study investigated the dewatering behaviour of a precipitate formed during elevated temperature treatment of a primary, pre-settled sludge from the neutralisation of aqueous acidic Fe2(SO4)3 and Ca(OH)2 solutions in an MSMPR reactor. The resulting treated precipitates were analysed for micro-properties, with results showing that an increase in the secondary reactor temperature from 25 °C up to 50 °C led to an increase in mean particle size, a decrease in the number of particles and improved dewatering behaviour at a ferric concentration of 300 mg/L. This was ascribed to the attainment of a circum-neutral surface charge that favoured agglomeration and a change in micro and nano-structure that allowed for better water passage.

The underlying principles of dewatering theory have recently achieved considerable practical application in the washing and dewatering of alumina trihydrate in Bayer plants. In particular, the influence on residual cake moisture contents of trace amounts of surfactant added to the wash water reveals that significant energy savings can be achieved. The influence of organic compounds produced by the caustic extraction of bauxite in the Bayer process is shown to be significant. These humic species reduce the cake permeability and the effectiveness of certain surfactants in dewatering operations.

Since its introduction several years ago in the United States, the high pressure belt filter press has proven to be a highly cost-effective dewatering device in a number of mining and industrial applications. To evaluate the process and economic factors associated with the dewatering of coal refuse, a comprehensive program of laboratory and on-site pilot studies has been conducted. This paper will summarize findings of this study and discuss advantages of the belt filter press over conventional dewatering methods. The conventional means of dewatering thickened coal refuse involves the use of vacuum disc filters or centrifuges. Due to the high amount of energy used to dewater refuse with these devices it was a logical course of action to apply belt filter press technology to this application, since a belt filter press will require less than 3.7 kW (connected).

Aerodynamic stall of vane-axial fans is both an operational problem and a safety concern. While deep stall is relatively easy to detect, the diagnosis of a partial stall is often more difficult. Its transient nature and the fact that its symptoms can mimic electromechanical problems of the fan and fan drive assembly, or vice-versa, compound the difficulty of making a timely and accurate diagnosis. A knowledge-based expert system known as FANPRO has been developed to aid in the diagnosis of these problems. FANPRO and its application are the subject of this paper.

THE great improvements which have been made in late years in the different systems and instruments used to perforate the crust of the earth for purposes of testing and exploring for mineral resources or for other reasons, by means of bore-holes of greater or less diameter and to greater or less depths, are manifold. It may therefore be of interest to make an impartial comparison of them, or of such as are most commonly used. Being well aware of the difficulties which are encountered in such a task, a reasonable allowance must be made in such a comparison. It is a rare instance when even two decidedly different systems or instruments have been used in the same locality, penetrating identically the same strata to the same depth. The diameter of a borehole as well as its greater or less depth must also be considered in regard to its cost per foot, etc. But for practical purposes, for ex¬ploration at least, we may assert this rule Any borehole, of whatever diameter, which allows the means of examining the strata most carefully and completely, will be sufficient for this purpose, but that one which will do it most economically and in the least space of time, must be considered the best for it. It will, therefore, partially depend upon circumstances, what system, in spite of other superiorities, may be the best in each case, and the following remarks may aid in deciding this question. To make the attempt here to review all that has been published upon the different systems and means of boring would be out of place. Reference can be had to the able publications treating upon this subject. A difference in this respect exists in regard to the use of the hollow rods in connection with the diamond drill, used for that purpose. The great future, which appears to be evident for this instrument, will be warrant enough for any one, who has had the opportunity to test it, to give his experience to the public. The research laboratories within the BRGM have also been active in creating new mineral processing equipment, some of which is directly applicable to such prospection. One such development, the mobile prospection unit, is described and its application in mineral exploration is demonstrated by a consideration of the diamond search in Australia and the general exploration of the Massif Armoricain (France). Because this latter study was fundamental in the development of the concept of 'mineral-geochemistry', and its application in mineral exploration, it is also briefly described.

THE writer has devoted a number of years to practical operations and to the study of geology in the oil fields. In consequence, he has been brought to investigate the theories advanced to account for the accumulation of oil and gas in commercial deposits. It is the result of these investigations and his personal conclusions that he wishes to sum up in this paper. The writer is an advocate of the organic origin of petroleum found in pools. He has been led to believe that the present theories of oil and gas accumulations are incomplete and, in certain respects, incorrect, although they may embody certain elements of truth; that the forces that are called upon to explain the movement are only secondary forces in the process, and insufficient, by themselves, to cause this movement; and that the phenomenon of accumulation is of much larger order than heretofore admitted and bears an intimate relation with the general as well as with the local deformations of the crust and is a direct consequence and a mechanical effect of these deformations to which the term "diastrophic" has been applied. As a complement to this theory, the writer offers a new interpretation of the "rock pressure" and of the mechanism of the "sealing up" of this pressure in oil and gas pools.

MARCEL R. DALY (communication to the Secretary?).-The fundamental disagreement between Eugene Coste and the writer proceeds essentially from the contradictory views they hold on the origin of petroleum. This difference cannot be bridged, nor can inorganic and organic theories be discussed here. The writer has suggested that the proper thing in such a case would be to agree to disagree. Coming to the detailed objections further presented by Mr. Coste, the writer feels that, in the main, they take their source in a wrong interpretation of the theory, and the writer is sometimes too generously invested with views that are not his own. 1. The only requirement for the theory is that the oil proceeding from organic remains be distributed in a water-laden sediment, and that this sediment be submitted to the increasing compression due to the continuous accumulation of superimposed strata, which would tend to squeeze out the liquid contents (p. 1152). This squeezing out would be further aided by the distortion of the strata (p. 1148, a). Nothing here makes impossible the slow formation of the oil, if this is considered necessary, as the piling up of the strata in the syncline would require by itself a protracted length of time, and, further, the squeezing-out process is a slow one. Possibly the formation of the oil may even continue during part of the process of distortion. But the mode of formation of the oil and the time and temperature required for it are left to the chemist to decide. The diastrophic theory, which is essentially a theory of motion and accumulation dependent on the laws of mechanics, is not directly concerned with them, provided the general points heretofore outlined be agreed upon. Perhaps it would be wise not to claim too many "eons" for the formation of the hydrocarbons, if the statement made by Sir Boverton Redwood is correct that "the coral reefs of the Red Sea are charged in places with recent petroleum, formed in that torrid climate from the swarming organisms occupying the shallow pools."1

EUGENE COSTS, Calgary, Alberta (communication to the Secretary*).¬This new theory to account for the accumulation of commercial deposits of oil and gas, is deliberately and admittedly based on the hypothesis that the origin of these products is organic. Mr. Daly says (page 1142), "Should the organic origin of the petroleum that is found in pools be granted, the following interpretation is offered for the mechanics of its accumulation." But suppose the origin thus accepted by definition be incorrect, then what becomes of the diastrophic theory, Mr. Daly's interpretation? As Mr. Daly remarks himself (same page), "It is obvious that the history of petroleum will have to be entirely different, dependent upon its origin, either from emanations coming from the depths, or from organic decomposition in the strata themselves." Then why should one propound a theory, through which he is endeavoring to trace the history of petroleum, by starting with a definition of its origin? The origin should be the deduction, the forced conclusion of the theory, and not its starting point. Facts alone should be considered first, in any theory worth the name, until sufficient proofs have accumulated to permit of the deduction of a complete explanation for these facts. This would lead one to the origin through a real theory founded on facts, and not based on a preconceived idea perhaps true, but possibly fanciful. Mr. Daly's way can only lead on one road, namely the organic road, and, I repeat, it may be the wrong road. In the case of the petroleum deposits, as .I have endeavored to show in several papers on the subject, to which the reader may refer, the facts clearly lead to the force conclusion that their origin is not one of accumulations of hydrocarbons at first disseminated in the sedimentary strata but the reverse process of subsequent local infiltrations and impregnations of hydrocarbon emanations from the depths. This new theory, therefore, founded on, an erroneous conception of origin cannot be a help in the solution of the petroleum' problem, not any more than were the anti-theory or the hydraulic theory, both of which were also based on the same error, although Mr. Daly is inclined to think that the authors of these two theories did not accept the misconception boldly enough (page 1142). -

In the modern world of demolition safety is paramount and unnecessary or unquantifiable risks are not accepted (FasterCapital, 2024) and all risks must be kept As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) (BSI, 2017). This principle has led to a huge reduction in deaths in the last 50 years and the statistics continue to improve although this is starting to plateau (Beal, 2007). Under normal circumstances, this is now simply part of the normal way work is done and systems are in place to ensure both safety and economic profits are assured. What happens when the environment is less controlled and risks are unknown, such as after a natural disaster, war, an accident or a stand-up from a failed demolition attempt? A dangerous structure cannot responsibly be left alone with a fence around it so some action must be taken, but how can this be done safely and responsibly? An incident in Didcot, England in which half of a power station’s boiler house being prepared for an explosive demolition collapsed suddenly, killing four men in 2016 provides a useful case study of how technology, creativity and planning can be used to conduct complex demolition fully remotely to avoid any further risk to life.
