The Grootegeluk coal-processing plant treats 3 kt of raw coal per hour to produce a middlings fuel coal and a coking coal fraction with ash contents of 35 and 10 per cent respectively. The plus 0,5 mm fraction is treated by heavy-medium processes, the final top size of the coal being 15 mm. About 400 t of minus 0,5 mm coal per hour is subjected to froth flotation. The routes originally considered for the processing of this fine coal were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy-medium cyclones, and water only cyclones in combination with froth flotation. The results from tests on the fines arising from a small-trial open-cast mine are discussed. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further tests were conducted on the selection of the equipment most suited to the particular requirements of this coal and the rest of the plant. Tests using different types of flotation cells and dewatering equipment are discussed. During the commissioning, several operational problems were encountered, and the work done to find the best solutions is discussed.

Gwalia gold mine is located close to the town of Leonora in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, some 830 km from Perth. The mine is wholly owned by St Barbara Ltd, an Australian Securities Exchange listed gold producer and explorer. The Gwalia mine is a deep, all-trucking mine and is serviced by a 10 km long decline from surface. Mining is currently 1540 m below surface. Reserves extend to 1820 m below surface and are open at depth. The mine produces in excess of 200 koz of gold per annum.The Leonora area is hot and arid, with a mean annual rainfall of 230 mm and a 95 per cent mean daily maximum temperature of 20.3°C wet-bulb and 35.6°C dry-bulb.The primary ventilation system comprises a 490 kg/s surface exhaust fan, which draws air down a parallel intake system consisting of the decline, and a dedicated fresh-air intake system extending to the bottom of the production zone. Cooling is provided via a surface bulk air cooler serviced by an ammonia refrigeration plant that delivers 150 kg/s of chilled water to the bulk air cooler.The refrigeration plant and bulk air cooler were installed in 2008. The design allows cooling to be increased over time by installing an additional refrigeration plant in a lead lag configuration with the current refrigeration plant when required.Since 2008, expansion and increased depth reached a point where the underground heat load exceeded the installed capacity of the existing 4.0 megawatt rated (MWR) refrigeration plant. In order to maintain the mine design conditions underground, upgrading of the existing refrigeration system was required to bring the cooling capacity to 7.5 MWR.Two expansion options were considered: the addition of an ammonia vapour-compression refrigeration machine similar to the existing one or a lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system using waste heat from the site power station. The original design and layout of equipment on-site meant that either could be used, allowing an assessment of the merits of both when additional cooling was required.The decision was made to install a lithium bromide absorption system on the lead side of the existing ammonia refrigeration plant. The ground handling system needed for the second lift of the underground block caving operation at Northparkes Mines had to link into the existing infrastructure. Production requirements indicated that an annual output of 5 Mtpa was necessary from a depth of approximately 850 m. The shaft that serviced the first lift stopped at a depth of 520 m. This paper covers the selection of the design for the system and the factors that were taken into consideration in making the decision. It will describe the installation program and methodology and highlight areas of significance and then detail some of the issues concerning commissioning of the ground handling system.

Why A Friction Hoist? B EFORE discussing the equipment, it would be instructive to review the factors that influenced the management of Opemiska Cop-per Mines to purchase a friction hoist rather than a conventional double drum hoist. The mine required that 250 tons per hour be hoisted from a depth of 2,100 feet. They also specified that the top speed should not exceed 1800 feet per minute. The sudden. explosion of relatively inexpensive digital process control computers has accelerated interest in the possibilities of economic savings by their use. In particular the metalliferous industries have shown that they are willing and capable 6f grasping this new technology and putting it to good use. These industries have a number of problems which need special attention. In many cases the process is difficult to measure and a reaction is often controlled by measuring a secondary effect, computing its relationship to the reaction and then applying the necessary corrective action. This creates problems in building the process model, designing the computer to process interface and in the subsequent system development. Environmentally the metalliferous industries create conditions which severely test sophisticated electronic equipment. Care taken in locating and housing this equipment is a major factor in ensuring reliability in Operation.

A reactor was designed and constructed to perform experiments on the generation of value added products using a plasma heat source. The engineering drawings were developed to include multiple sample ports for temperature and velocity measurements and view ports were designed to allow the Physics group to make optical measurements. Two methods for feeding solids into the system were developed and installed. Preliminary experiments were performed to characterize the system at various flow rates and power settings. Experiments were performed using zinc metal and oxygen to form zinc oxide. The particles that were generated were characterized chemically using atomic absorption and x-ray diffraction; and physically using scanning electron microscopy. The particles appear to be of value added size; but there is a tendency for the fine particles to adhere to one another forming agglomerates. Additional experimental work will continue the evaluation of the major parameters.

The mining industry internationally seems on the verge of a major underground support revolution as suppliers, mines, consultants and researchers develop, test and use thin support (structural) membranes (or superskins as they are commonly called) mainly as a replacement for screen/wire mesh. Thick membrane support in the form of shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used since the 1950s in underground mines. Shotcrete, in mines, is generally applied at a thickness between 25 and 100 mm depending on the need. Thin membranes are however applied at a typical thickness between 2 and 6 mm. Certain thin membranes have been available for several years (Tannant et al, 1999), but the intense interest in such supports has only grown in the last few years. The interest lies mainly in the potential to safely reduce the mining cycle time and hence improve productivity. There is however considerable confusion concerning such supports, and this paper attempts to clarify certain aspects and dispel certain misconceptions and myths about thin support membranes.

This work goes beyond the general perception of how the well-known mine to mill process can be applied, by applying deeper knowledge along the mining chain. Grade deportment and dilution are considered at the mining stage, and modelled with the new SMI blast movement simulator, linking with the block model data. Assessing the shift to a considerably more competent section of the orebody is quantified via substantial milling trials at standard and higher-intensity blasts. These were stockpiled for batch processing through the mill to ensure feed integrity. The trial work included operating the mill at widely different fillings to develop Grindcurve milling responses. Additionally, model informed process control is initiated via a mill prediction tool.It has been found that accounting for blast movement for the higher intensity blasts could generate additional value of around $1.5M per blast. With the high-intensity blast and changing mill control, the plant was easily able to exceed projected mill throughputs with the far more competent Pipeline ore. Strategies to shift the workload and debottleneck the milling circuit were proposed and proven during the milling trials, demonstrating an increase in throughput of 7 per cent despite running at a lower SAG mill speed, and potential of 16 per cent for increasing the SAG mill to standard operating speed. A number of process improvement opportunities have been identified to enhance current productivity and ensure long term capability to process the considerably more competent future ores. All of this is being linked in with the major digitisation program at the Barrick Cortez site, with an objective of linking all the data into a mine-wide process optimisation system, that can embed the processes by providing process-wide data access and production support via the future dynamic models linking ore body knowledge to productivity along the full process chain.CITATION:Powell, M, Yahyaei, M, Geronimo, J, Yussupova, Z and Kumar, P, 2018. Digitalization and automation technology offer new possibilities to increase productivity and obtain higher levels of autonomy in mining operations. Introducing autonomous systems into mining is not only a technical problem in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, nor a problem of safety in human-automation interactions. The systems also need to be designed and developed so that they foster healthy and attractiveworking environments. The design and development phase of newmining technology has not been extensively studied previously. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated technology developers’ basic assumptions about humans and their interactions with the technology they develop. We conducted five semi-structured workshops within an EU funded project concerned with developing digitalization and automation solutions for the mining industry. The data suggests that many critical functions will still be under human control in future mining systems. The results also indicate increased complexity in the interaction between autonomous systems and humans as the technology becomes more advanced. As a result, we suggest that a human perspective, based on sociotechnical principles, should not only be considered in implementing the technology at mines but also in the early conceptual phases of developing and designing the technology. This will ensure healthy and attractive work environments in the future mining industry.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM The technique reported here involves measuring the air pressures generated within sealed boreholes located behind blasts. Results from twelve free face blasts in competent rock environments a represented. There were no instances of high pressure gas penetration, even at distances corresponding to less than one blast burden. Rapidly generated underpressures were measured in most holes, with the magnitudes of the peak pressures decreasing with distance behind the blasts. It has been proposed that the under pressures are the result of new volume created due to crack formation and overall rock mass dilation. The experimental evidence is consistent with this, including a correspondence of the onset times of the peak underpressures with the nominal firing times of the nearest blastholes. New post-blast cracks were observed when using borehole video cameras in the monitoring holes. A calculation of new volume produced within the monitoring holes is proposed as an indicator of damage. While the data exhibit considerable scatter, there is a power function dependence on scaled distance, which resembles that of typical vibration data. The data also lie within the normally quoted vibration regimes for rock damage and are consistent with measured extents of damage. It is concluded that this technique may provide an inexpensive and practical comparative measure of near-field rock damage due to blasting. It is further concluded that gas penetration is not a common phenomenon. Damage appears to be mainly attributable to the nearest blastholes and the control of charge mass in perimeter blastholes is emphasized for damage minimization.

In flotation where a bulk flotation concentrate is produced or a gangue sulfide such as pyrite contaminates a concentrate, residual collector has to be removed from the sulfide surfaces to allow selective separation in a subsequent flotation step. Depending on the sulfide mineral, the main species that needs to be removed when using a xanthate collector is either a metal xanthate or dixanthogen. For the identification of surface species, specific solvents may be used to remove each species û metal xanthates are known to be soluble in acetone whilst dixanthogens are known to be soluble in non-polar solvents such as diethyl ether. Xanthates break down with time, temperature and pH into various decomposition products. The major decomposition product is dixanthogen which can aid flotation but other products such as perxanthate and carbon disulfide can have an adverse effect on flotation. Various analytical techniques can be employed to monitor the formation of decomposition products on the surface of the mineral and in solution. The best of these is ultraviolet spectroscopy as it has diagnostic peaks for decomposition product determination. In this work two approaches were taken to understand the relationship between the flotation of a chalcopyrite and pyrite from an ore containing these two minerals. One approach was to remove the xanthate species with an organic solvent and then use ultraviolet spectroscopy to determine the concentration of dissolved species. The second method involved measuring xanthate decomposition in solution by measuring the residual xanthate concentration using ultraviolet spectroscopy. These experiments confirmed the species adsorb at the surface of the mineral and how these species affect the recovery and grade of the valuable mineral. In both cases pH and temperature were varied and two xanthate collectors (SEX and PAX) were used to study these relationships. These relationships could be applied to industrial flotation systems and allow for more accurate determination of optimal xanthate dosage and hence save on reagent costs.

Vigorous agitation of suspensions of coking coals in water (or light mineral oils) will often result in catast rophic loss of caking properties. It is shown that this deterioration is not a consequence of oxidation of the coals (by dissolved oxygen), but that it can be qualitatively connected with internal "solid-state" reactions which appear to derive their activation energies from cavitation of the liquid.

THE product obtained by roasting stibnite is likely to contain some unoxidized antimony trisulphide and a mixture of antimony trioxide and antimony tetroxide. It was desired to determine, as accurately as possible, the condition of the antimony as well as the total quantity present. Attempts were made to separate the trisulphide and the two oxides by methods based upon their varying solubilities in different solvents, but no satisfactory results were obtained in this way. It was found, however, that by determining the total antimony content, the antimony present as trioxide, and the antimony present as trisulphide, a good idea of the chemical composition of the roasted product could be obtained. The total antimony was determined by dissolving the sample in concentrated hydrochloric acid, reducing the antimony entirely to the trivalent condition by means of hydriodic acid and eventually titrating the antimony back to the pentavalent condition by means of iodine in the presence of sodium bicarbonate.&apos; The details of the procedure are as follows: Weigh out 0.25 gram of the roasted product into a trapped flask (Fig. 1), add 4 grams of powdered tartaric acid, 2 grams of potassium iodide and 40 c.c. of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Boil the solution gently for 5 min. and then cool to room temperature by shaking the flask while holding it under running water. Then, very carefully discharge the iodine color by the cautious addition of 0.05-normal sodium thiosulphate solution, adding a little starch toward the last. THIS paper will be confined to the treatment of methods as applied in the laboratory of the Boston and Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Great Falls, Mont. As the electrolytic plant of this company operates at a current density of approximately 35 to 40 amperes per square foot when running up to capacity, the arsenic and antimony content of the anodes delivered to the, plant is of considerable importance as bearing on the purity of the refined cathodes turned out. Owing to the rather high relative percentage of antimony, it has always been the custom to determine antimony as well as arsenic in all forms of copper. Thus, anodes have been analyzed in which the antimony was about equal to the arsenic although the average shows about 2 parts of arsenic to 1 of antimony. In the refined copper the relative proportions of the two impurities vary considerably, but probably in the average are about equal. In this latter case, the percentage of the two is so small that ordinarily no attempt is made to separate them, the report of analysis showing percentage of As and Sb combined. Although rapid and exceedingly accurate determinations of arsenic may be made by means of various distillation schemes, the determination of antimony, either by itself or together with arsenic, has always been more or less cumbersome and has required a considerable amount of time. By the methods, details of which follow, the determination of arsenic and antimony, either separated as in the case of anodes or together in case of refined copper, is accomplished in 24 hr. from the time the sample is received by the chemist.

Samples weighing 0&#183;5 g are fused with potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 4 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is treated with EDTA, adjusted with ammonia to give a pH value between 5 and 6 treated with cyanide, ammonia, and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate then bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate is extracted with chloroform and the yellow colour is compared visually with a standard series. Alternatively, the bismuth complex may be filtered on a &quot;Millipore&quot; filter and subjected to x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

Booster fans have been extensively used in underground mines throughout the world. In the United Kingdom, S. Africa, Germany, and other countries, many non-coal and coal mines employ booster fans. These fans help to reduce air leakage, to provide an improved flow distribution and to reduce the overall cost of mine ventilation. Although booster fans have not been used in coal mines in the United States, a recent survey indicated that many coal mines would install booster fans if they were allowed to do so. With the inclusion of coal mines, the use of booster fans in underground mines is expected to increase substantially in order to maintain air quality and quantity requirements. Several techniques are used, with varying degrees of success, in determination of booster fan locations in an underground ventilation network. These techniques include linear programming, critical-path crashing, CPM together with cutset operations, the out-of-kilter method, and simulation techniques. This paper provides a brief comparison of these techniques, and reports on ongoing research for an improved methodology for the determination of booster fan locations.

WHILE in the employ of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters and the Electrolytic Zinc Oompanies at their South Melbourne Research Station, the writer was detailed to investigate the principles underlying the Parkes Process with a view of determining:1. The Interdependence of the variables:(a) Quantity of zinc required per charge,(b) Temperature of stirring of each zincing,(c) Silver content of the bullion after first zinculg,(d) Silver content of the bullion after second zincing,(e) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting, with reference to the method of working the Parkes Process then in operation at Port Pirie.2. The possibility of effecting improvements in the Port Pirie practice of desilverising, especially with respect to:(a) Silver grade of the crusts produced for retorting.(b) Quantity of zinc required per charge.The method of desilverising in practice at Port Pirie was a two-stage zincing.In both zincings the bullion was cooled to its solidification temperature and the silver crusts which separated from the lead were completely removed.The crusts from the first zincing were retorted, and the crusts from the second zincing were returned to the first zincing of the next charge.

IN the Journal of the Franklin Institute for May, 1870, there is published a description of a Colorimeter, together with a modification of the method proposed by Professor Eggertz, for determining combined carbon in iron and steel. An instrument of the kind there described, but of a little higher range, though in other respects not differing materially from the one originally made and used in the Iron-Masters&apos; Laboratory, I now submit to your inspection ; and I propose, also, to make some determinations with it for the purpose of showing how quickly they may be made, and enabling you to form some judgment of what reliance can be placed in the results. Professor Eggertz proposed only a single standard, and the solution to be tested should be diluted to exactly correspond in color with that of the standard, and the per cent. of carbon calculated after carefully noting and making allowance for the measures of water used in diluting. In practice, difficulty was found in bringing the color of the normal solution down to the exact shade of the standard ; also other difficulties were met with in conducting the process, causing delay and interfering with the accuracy of the results. To materially overcome these, and after numerous attempts, an instrument such as is now before you suggested itself to me; and also I concluded to use a larger quantity of metal than directed by Eggertz, and, in addition, to filter the solution from its insoluble matter before making the comparison ; and, more recently, to use an acid of just such strength as would completely dissolve the metal without the application of heat. Experimenting with these changes from the original method I obtained reasonably good results. The instrument, you will observe, consists of a series of tubes, sixteen in number, two and a half inches long, and about half an inch in diameter, standing upright, and securely fastened in a light, portable, walnut-wood frame, but separated one from the other so as to allow just sufficient space between to place for comparison the tube containing the solution to be tested.
