The rate of dissolution of sulphide minerals is frequently interpreted in terms of the passivating behaviour of a layer of material on the surface. This interpretation has driven research to identify and possibly remove this layer from the surface, and thus yield higher rates of dissolution. The identification of such layers has proved difficult, with different researchers claiming different compositions for possible layers. An alternative framework has been pursued by the author and co-workers, who have argued that the rate of dissolution is governed by the electronic structure of the minerals which give rise to their semiconducting properties. Researchers sceptical of this approach have argued that semiconducting properties are only important in highly pure substances. In this paper, we review the electronic and semiconducting properties and discuss how they impact dissolution behaviour. These properties affect their colour and dissolution properties even though the minerals are not high purity substances. Keywords: Dissolution, leaching, passivation, semiconductor, chalcopyrite

TWO American students entered the École des Mines in 1856, Joseph Lesley of Philadelphia and Thomas Egleston of New York. Lesley remained there only one year, but Egleston completed the whole curriculum and received, in 1860, the certificate given to foreign students in lieu of the official appointment and degree awarded French students. Returning home he received, in 1861, an appointment by Secretary Henry of the Smithsonian Institution to sort, label, and arrange the collections of mineralogical and geological specimens which had been brought to Washington by the various government exploring expeditions in the West. Thomas Egleston, born in New York City on Dec. 9, 1832, was the son of Thomas Jefferson Egleston, who came to New York from Massachusetts some time before 1829. The first American ancestor of the family had settled near Dorchester in 1630. T. J. Egleston and Joseph Battell established an iron-merchandizing business* at 166 South St., New York, which prospered exceedingly; so much so that when Thomas J. Egleston died, July. 12, 1861, his estate had a book value of over $500,000. Since an older brother was expected eventually to take over this business, Thomas, who had a liking for science, went to Yale, where he completed the regular four-year course in 1854, and then remained another year for advanced work in chemistry under Silliman. One biographer says he went to Europe, early in 1856, on account of his health. It was the custom at that time for wealthy young men to make a tour of Europe after completing their academic education. "The columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has been studied numerically under unsteady-state conditions using mathematical models that: (i) include a non-equilibrium undercooling at the columnar front;and(ii) describe the simultaneous evolution of the columnar and equiaxed zones.The results are discussed and compared with those produced by a steady-state analysis.IntroductionThe majority of the previous work on the columnar-equiaxed transition (CET) has concentrated on the production of equiaxed nuclei, regarding this as being the critical step in the formation of an equiaxed zone. Recently, the growth of equiaxed grains has been considered and this is not unreasonable because, for an equiaxed zone to be present, the grains must grow as well as nucleate. Since the growth rate of the grains will be determined by the thermal environment at and ahead of the columnar tips, it was decided to model the liberation and flow of heat during solidification to discover whether the various trends in the columnar range might be explained by their effect on the temperature profile throughout the casting. The models presented here for the solidification of a casting are the first to include the latent heat liberated ahead of the columnar front. Burden and Hunt (1) consider its effect only qualitatively, and although Lipton et al (2) adopt a criterion for the CET which is based on the thermal interaction of the columnar and equiaxed grains, they do not actually include the latent heat in their calculations.It can be argued that the latent heat liberated by the equiaxed grains in the bulk will retard the columnar dendrites in a casting: once the equiaxed grains are sufficiently well-established, the latent heat that they evolve could slow down the columnar growth to such an extent that the equi axed would dominate. Alternatively, the latent heat produced by the equiaxed grains might suppress further equiaxed solidification by raising the bulk temperature. The nature of the thermal interaction between columnar and equiaxed growth is not obvious, and because it is dependent on the material parameters and the dimensions of the system, it cannot be considered effectively in a qualitative way but has to be studied quantitatively: hence the need for the mathematical models discussed in the following pages. The results of the models are discussed in the light of a steady state analysis."

"In cobalt production technology at a stage of solutions purification manganous cake (slime) basically containing hydroxides of the specified metals is formed. The possibility of full cobalt recycling in the basic technology of metal production at slime processing with generation of pure manganous compounds is shown. After slime dissolution in sulfuric acid in the presence of reducers the solutions containing cobalt, manganese, nickel and other nonferrous metals are formed. Optimum conditions of selective precipitation major part of cobalt by sodium hydroxide from the obtained solution are defined, thus more than 95% of manganese are remained in the solution. The cobalt precipitate is directed to the basic technology and the solution is purified by sorption. The most effective sorbents are chosen, optimum modes of its use are found. Examples of manganese recovery from the purified solutions as MnO2, MnCO3, Mn(OH)2 with a ratio manganese : impurities more than 3000 are presented.In the processes of hard alloys manufacture and processing of cobalt-bearing primary raw materials various cobalt-manganous slimes are formed. After leaching by solutions of mineral acids the problem of cobalt and manganese separation becomes an actual. The common way of metals separation in a solution is the Shreyber’ alkaline method allowing rather selectively to precipitate of cobalt hydroxide by sodium hydroxide. However this way does not allow separating completely target metals because of transfer of some manganese in the hydrated precipitate, even at its rather low content.In the given work the results of researches to improvement of a traditional way by inclusion to hydrometallurgical technology of operation of sorption separation of the specified metals are presented. The main goal is definition of conditions to achievement of the complete removing cobalt at hydrolysis with the minimum sedimentation of manganese and the subsequent additional recovery of cobalt by ionites from the obtained solutions."

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. Laminar flow furnace techniques and thermal analysis were used to study the combustion of Kambalda nickel concentrate and Collie coal. The study was made to ascertain the suitability of the latter as a replacement for the fuel oil currently burnt in a flash furnace at the Kal- goorlie Nickel Smelter. The coal was found to ignite at temperatures between 500-600¦C which was the same as that required for the most reac- tive component of the concentrate, namely py- rite. The rates of reaction of both the coal and concentrate were dependent on oxygen con- centration. Sulfur dioxide hindered the combus- tion of concentrate and of coal, the effect on the concentrate being the more pronounced. The effects of moisture content and the tendency for spontaneous combustion of the coal were also noted.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Mining Experiment Station of the U. S. Geological Survey, in Pittsburg, an investigation of the process of combustion is being carried on in a specially-designed furnace having an unusually long combustion-chamber. This work is conducted by a committee consisting of H. Kreisinger, mechanical engineer; Dr. J. C. W. Frazer, chemist; and Dr. J. K. Clement, physicist. The problem, essentially one of physical chemistry, is extremely interesting to all who are concerned in the burning of coal or the construction of furnaces. The main object of these experiments is to ascertain the relation between the amount of the volatile combustible driven from the coal and the combustion-spaces necessary to burn it completely. Our best steam-coals vary from 15 to 45 per cent. of fixed combustible. The greater part of the latter is burned on the grate; but the volatile combustible leaves the freshly-charged coal and must be burned in the combustion-space. If this space is not large enough, the volatile combustible will leave the furnace only partly burned, and the result will be a considerable heat-loss and a smoky stack. Strictly speaking, the factor which determines the completeness of combustion of the volatile matter, after it has been mixed with a certain amount of air, is the length of time the mixture is allowed to remain in the combustion-space; but this length of time depends on the extent of the space itself. Let us suppose, for instance, that, when a given coal is burned at a certain standard rate, the volume of the volatile combustible driven off per second is 10 cu. ft. Adding, say, 10 cu. ft. of air, the volume of the resulting burning mixture is increased to 20 cu. ft. If the combustion-space is 20 cu. ft., the burning mixture will stay in it,

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IT is recognized that, in all metallurgical operations, the greatest possible uniformity in all conditions is essential to the best results. It is the constant aim of metallurgists to secure this uniformity, and their success in this respect has been in many cases the cause of great advances in the metallurgical processes themselves. Of all such processes, the production of pig-iron in the modern blast-furnace is perhaps the most complex and the most difficult of control. Notwithstanding the great progress of recent years, there is still great difficulty in obtaining anything like uniform conditions and results in the manufacture of pig-iron. The reason is not far to seek. The ores vary in composition and physical properties, often carrying a varying amount of gangue material, unevenly distributed The coke may vary in composition, cell-structure, moisture, hardness, and other properties. The blast, the weight of which far exceeds that of any other constituent, varies in its moisture-content and consequently in its chemical composition ; and its temperature, by reason of the method of heating, is not uniform, but, besides varying from time to time with atmospheric and other outside conditions, has a maximum and minimum for every changing of stoves. Now, with regard to these variations, the modern demand for uniformity has been greatly aided. Manganese nodules, seafloor massive sulfides, and cobalt-rich manganese crusts in deep-sea areas have been considered as future metal sources (Mero, 1965; Halbach, 1982; Lenoble, 2000). Manganese nodules were the first recognized deep-sea mineral resource and many efforts concentrated on the R&D of mining systems (Welling, 1981; Herrouin et al., 1989; Yamada and Yamazaki, 1998) and assessment of environmental impacts (Burns et al., 1980; Foell et al., 1990; Yamazaki and Kajitani, 1999). No mining venture, however, has been active for this potential resource. The reason is that the rate of world economic growth has been slower than anticipated in 1960s. During the 10 year period of 1994-2003 (Fig. 1), on the other hand, there was about a 33% increase in the world copper demand. Of that increase, about 60% was consumed by China. Most of China?s increased copper demand took place over the final 4-5 years of that period. The growth is expected to continue for several years, and in 10 years or sooner the same situation is expected for India. Copper is the third metal in global demand, but its small abundance in the Earth?s crust is not well recognized (Table 1). From the production rate and the abundance, a copper shortage, or crisis, has a high probability than the other metals. Japan has no domestic copper resources and needs a counter measure for this potential coming copper shortage. Fortunately, Japan has a manganese nodule mining claim in the Clarion-Clipperton nodule field, Kuroko-type massive seafloor sulfide deposits in the Okinawa Trough and Izu-Ogasawara areas, and cobalt-rich manganese crusts around Okinotori-Shima and Marcus Islands. We need to re-evaluate their potential as copper resources and to realize their development.

THE importance of making analyses of gases in furnaces which are used for metallurgical purposes is every day growing more and more evident. It is the only method of understanding the reactions that take place in the furnace, and of economically conducting the operations both with regard to the fuel used and the reactions which take place on the bodies to be subjected to the influence of the heat and gases. As a knowledge of the composition of gases is becoming every day more necessary to the proper conduct of furnace operations, it seems desirable that furnace managers should generally know that the analysis of gas for commercial purposes is neither difficult, tedious, or expensive, and that it does not necessarily imply the use of corrections requiring difficult instrumental observations and long and tedious mathematical calculations. Any method, therefore, which will tend to render these analyses simple will also tend to having them made and repeated as frequently as the analyses of the ores and other materials charged in the furnace. They should be made even more frequently, as their composition is affected by any change in the condition of the furnace, and a knowledge of their composition will give a ready clue to the unseen and otherwise not easily detected changes which are taking place. The first commercial use of phosphine derivatives as solvent extraction reagents began in the mid 1970's with the construction of several plants to recover uranium from wet process phosphoric acid. The process eventually adopted by all of these plants used the well known trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) in synergic combination with D2EHPA to extract U(6+). This prompted the development of other phosphine - based reagents and led to the discovery of a variety of interesting commercial and potential applications which are summarized in this paper. The applications include cobalt-nickel and niobium-tantalum separation and the selective recovery of silver and zinc.

The concentrator plant of Fahrica Mine, that started production in 1977, was using nine Jones wet high intensity magnetic separators (WHIMS) of the standard type DP 317 with a 1.5 mm gap width for the production of pelletfeed concentrate. These WHIMS units were operating in parallel with a feed rate of 110 t per hour, with about 47 per cent Fe in the feed, and with a maximum of only 0.8 per cent magnetite. The field strength was about 1.2 Tesla. From 1986, the mine has adapted its production facilities to mine and concentrate larger amounts of lowgrade itabintes to maximise the use of the available iron ore reserves. An increase of up to three per cent magnetite in the magnetic separator feed, resulted in a reduction of capacity. This was due to partial clogging of the separation boxes at high field intensities, which were required for the recovery of the very fine hematite. Even by lowering the feed rate and the field intensity the problem could not be resolved. After extensive testwork in a pilot plant, with a Jones separator model DI' 90, the commercial WHIMS plant was modified into a two stage process using the existing nine Jones separators. The gap of the first stage with four machines was increased to a width of 3.5 mm, corresponding to a maximum field intensity of 0.7 Tesla. This first 'medium intensity scalping stage' is followed by a second 'real' high intensity WHIMS step with five machines operating at the original settings with 1.5 mm gap width and 1.0 Testa maximum field intensity. Feed rates of up to 320 tons per hour in the first and up to 240 tons per hour in the second stage could be achieved. The design concept of the concentrator at Fabrica mine is described using the old and new flowsheets. Details of the pilot plant testwork as well as actual performance data of the new plant section are presented.

Commercial demand for gold in the United States is important. It has a large impact on the total world commercial and overall non-monetary demand. Given the present free market price and our need to import gold, it has a substantial adverse effect upon our international payments position. But, according to most recent estimates, the United States demand is perhaps no more than 20% of the world as a whole. In 1971, United States consumption was estimated at 215.6 tons out of a total of 1,412.1 tons 1. This figure is very close to the 16% figure developed by Consolidated Gold Fields as the average for the years 1968-1970.2 Surveys of both production and use of gold on a world-wide basis are not new. With the bulk of gold production in only a few countries, it has been possible to develop fairly reliable series on gold output. Estimates have been developed on the known reserves of gold and probable output at various prices.3 On the demand side, figures have been somewhat less complete and reliable. The Bank for International Settlements and the Director of the United States Mint have regularly published estimates of commercial use in major industrial countries. The IMF has issued an increasingly comprehensive survey in its Annual Reports. The IMF has attempted to cover all nations-not restricting its efforts to major industrial nations-and has tried to estimate both gold taken for commercial uses (Estimated Industrial and Artistic Use) and for private hoarding. Their method is to begin with data on free world output plus any net sales by the Soviet Union, subtract any additions to world monetary stocks (or add to available supply for any net reductions in world monetary stocks), subtract estimates for commercial demand and have left as a residual an estimate for private hoarding. The method is straightforward and simple but the quality of the data is suspect. Industry sources tend to believe the figures as biased on the low side because of a persistent tendency to underreport gold movements.4

In .December of 1987, International Mill Service, Inc. signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Tetronics Research & Development Co. Limited of Faringdon, Oxfordshire., England to commercialize plasma technology which had been demonstrated in an EAF dust processing application. The intent of the process is to reduce and volatize the zinc, lead and cadmium oxides inherent in EAF dust and collect these elements as metals in an ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) zinc splash condenser, and to render the resultant slag an inert, non-hazardous material. With these objectives in mind, IMS started commissioning facilities in 1989 at Florida Steel in Jackson, Tennessee and Nucor-Yamato Steel in Armorel, Arkansas. This paper will address the commercial development and progress of the technology at these two installations. Process Description In the EAF steelmaking process typically the off gas stream is cleaned by some form of baghouse. The particulate collected is known as Electric Arc Furnace dust and has been designated by the U.S. EPA as hazardous waste number K061, once it leaves the collection system. This designation was given to the material due to the high toxic concentrations of lead and cadmium (nickel and chromium for stainless EAF dusts) inherent in the dust. IMS' method of operation is to locate the facilities on the client mill's property adjacent to the baghouse. The dust is transported directly to IMS via a closed conveyance system. This method enables the technology to be an additional processing step in the steelmaking process. Once the dust has been transported to the IMS facility, it is fed, metered and mixed mechanically in the feed conveyance system with a carbon reductant (typically coke breeze). The carbon reductant is approximately 10% of the dust feed rate. This mixture passes through the feed system and enters the furnace

In preparation of this Paper, the emphasis has been laid on the commercial rather than on the technical and scientific aspects of coal evaluation. It is intended to describe and comment on the principal factors which currently determine the selection and procurement of coking coal for the steel industry, and is not based on the results of any original research by the author. Evaluation of different coals for strictly thermal uses, for gas production or other chemical applications has not been attempted, and comparisons of coal with other fuels have been excluded: the paper is concerned only with coals for the production of blast furnace coke. The discussion is strongly related to, and illustrated by, British, and to some extent, other Western European practice, but it is hoped that the general conclusions may have a wider application.

Exploration requires substantial capital, and is an extremely risky business (only 1 in 100 prospects ever becomes a mine). The average lead time, that is the time between discovery and production, varies from around two years for a gold mine, to 15 years for a lead/zinc mine. Since it takes years to find, prove and develop most ore bodies, exploration must be carried out years ahead of the depletion of existing deposits. Investors in exploration are exposed to risk for long periods before knowing whether they will receive a return on the funds invested. The risk, high-cost, uncertainty and long lead times involved in exploration make it an aspect of commerce that most managers and investors find difficult to rationalise or understand. Nevertheless, it is a given that the long-term survival of the mining sector depends on discovery of new mineral deposits, however the immediacy of the need to find or acquire new mineral deposits in order to compete and prosper in the industry is less well understood. This paper examines the commercial realities which underlie exploration for new mineral deposits. The first and foremost reason for exploration is to maintain or increase depleting ore reserves which are the asset base of mining, but there are other compelling commercial reasons for exploring, and these are: to maintain return on investment, to achieve growth or create wealth through discoveries which lead tonew mining ventures, to remain competitive in the industry, to diversify, and to control raw material source for mineral processing and/ormarketing ventures. Exploration is necessary for survival of the industry, and also for survival of organisations competing in the industry. The organisations which discover the best orebodies are in the best position to compete, and mining organisations which fail to find or acquire new mineral deposits rapidly become uncompetitive and unable to maintain return on shareholdersÆ investment.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THROUGH wide experience at numerous mills in the United States I have found that there is a decided difference of opinion among the producers of steel as to what constitutes commercially sound steel. Some metallurgists insist upon having, for certain grades of steel, a so-called "open steel," -i.e., one which contains numerous blowholes of varying sizes, and consequently but little volume of true pipe, although a central intermittent shrinkage cavity often extends well down into the ingot: Such blowholes and pipe are expected to weld up during rolling or forging, because their surfaces are not oxidized. Even if this be admitted, included slag particles and a high degree of segregation are bound to be present in the product of such ingots. Blowholes are the result of an oxidized heat, and all heats, unless made or finished in the electric furnace, are oxidized more or less. Subsequent deoxidation, or rather degasification, either in the ladle or in the mold, or in both, is necessary to reduce or prevent blowholes. As is well known, a greater yield of billets or sheets is secured from the ingot by allowing the formation of blowholes, but this is undoubtedly obtained at the expense of the quality of the product. Decided segregation of carbon, phosphorus, and sulphur, as well as small included slag particles, undoubtedly exists throughout the greater portion of all so-called open steel, and cannot be removed by cropping. The first requisite for sound, homogeneous steel ingots and blooms is therefore, in my opinion, so to treat the steel in the furnace, ladle, and mold that "piping" steel is produced. The line of demarcation between harmful and so-called "harmless" blowholes is practically impossible to define. Is it not, therefore, the better and safer practice to use means for the elimination of blowholes and correspondingly reduce the segregation and allow the formation of a well-defined shrinkage cavity or pipe .at the upper end of the ingot? Discussion of the paper of EMIL GATHMANN, presented at the San Francisco meeting September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1485 to 1492 H. W. LASH, Cleveland, 0.-I have found in practical experience that it is not objectionable to have some blow-holes in ingots. They enlarge during solidification and have a tendency to cause the steel to rise. If they are of fairly small size they weld up quite readily, especially where they are some distance from the surface. In that way a pipe, which is much more detrimental than a few small blow-holes, is prevented. There is a very great difference in the formation of blow-holes in steel. You get one condition in soft steel and entirely another condition in rail carbon, or the still higher grades. The figures that are given in Mr. Gathmann's paper I imagine are taken from the higher carbons, as it is very seldom that piping occurs in soft steel. J. W.
