Crocidolite deposits in the Hamersley Ranges, NW. of Western Australia, occur over a length of 180 miles and a width of 20' to 30 miles. Their stratigraphic environment and mineralogy is comparable to that of similar deposits of the Cape Belt, South Africa. It is probable that the known exposures' represent only a small portion of the total extent.Current production is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Ltd. at Wittenoom Gorge and has been in the order of 1,2,000 to 14,000 long t.p.a over the past six years.INTRODUCTIONThe Hamersley Ranges are located in the NW. Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21° 30' to 23°S and longitudes 117° to 1200 E. Their mean height above sea level is 2,000 ft, and they rise from 600 to 800 ft above the general level of the tableland which extends SE. from the coastal town of Roebourne.Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 ft above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, which are dry during the greater part of the year. These streams have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of crocidolite outcrop.The presence of the mineral was first recorded in 1917, but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when strong market demand for crocidolite resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Dale's Gorges. This project, which is intended to provide effective sewerage services to the Blue Mountains community, is located in the Blue Mountains National Park, about 60 km west of Sydney, Australia. The sewerage scheme consists of about 40 km of tunnels, out of which approximately 22 km have been completed. This paper describes the last major tunnelling operation on this project, the Hazelbrook to Katoomba tunnels. These tunnels, which mainly traverse the Hawkesbury Sandstone formation, are being excavated by a new 3.4 meter diameter Jarva Mk12C TBM. The mucking system consists of a continuous conveyor, which has allowed for some very impressive advance rates. The paper will consist of three main sections; the general geological conditions expected along the tunnel will be described in the first section. The second section will discuss the design and main features of the TBM, back-up system and continuous conveyor. The third section of the paper will describe the operational aspects and various performance data of the machine.

THERE was an, extensive mining and industrial exploitation of Russia, about 20 years ago, by Belgian, French and British capitalists; but the results were discouraging. It is said that the Belgian and French public together lost approximately $400,000,000, chiefly in the coal and iron industry of southern Russia. This loss is largely accounted for by the fact that most of the companies were formed, as usual in " boom " times, to sell stock; and that thorough investigations were not made. In 1906, renewed interest was taken in Russian mines, especially in those of gold and copper, and a considerable literature is growing on this subject; but as yet I have seen no account of one of the large Russian mining estates. The following notes on such property, where the conditions are so different from those in the mining regions of the United States, should be of interest This inadequate and probably somewhat inaccurate account is made up, partly from my own notes made on the ground, in the summers of 1904 and 1905, and partly from a volume on the geology and resources of the estate issued several years ago, containing surface-and mine-maps, and from a pamphlet published in 1904, giving a general account of the condition and prospects of the property. This pamphlet includes a report made by Arthur L. Pearse, a member of this Institute, in 1899. Both these books are in Russian, and were prepared by the Bogoslovsk Mining Co., which owns and operates the property. Articles in many other languages have appeared dealing with various matters connected with the estate; but I know of no other general account of it. The Boleo project is located in Mexico close to the town of Santa Rosalia on the Baja Peninsula. The Boleo deposit contains copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese values as oxides with minor sulfides. The Boleo deposit is metallurgically challenging due to: 1) the requirement to recover four separate metals; 2) the presence of high levels of clay in the deposit resulting in difficult solid-liquid separations, and; 3) the need to use seawater for the bulk of the processing. Baja Mining, Bateman Engineering and SGS Lakefield Research have collaborated to develop and test a process flowsheet to recover copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese products at Boleo. The key steps in the flowsheet are: ? Feed preparation (scrubbing and ball milling of oversize) in copper raffinate ? Ore leaching using oxidative and reductive leaching ? CCD washing using high rate thickening technology ? Copper SXlEW ? Treatment of a bleed solution for cobalt, zinc and manganese recovery The process for cobalt, zinc and manganese recovery involves iron and aluminum removal followed by cobalt/zinc bulk extraction using CSIRO's DSX solvent extraction system and selective zinc and cobalt stripping. The zinc strip solution is evaporated to produce zinc sulfate monohydrate crystals to market and cobalt is recovered via a further SXlEW process as high purity metal. Manganese is precipitated as manganese carbonate from the DSX raffinate solution. This paper will review the Boleo process flowsheet and provide detailed results from the 2006 pilot plant operation conducted at SGS Lakefield in Canada.

The electrolytic zinc plant, with a capacity 75,000 tonnes per year, is part of Zaklady Gorniczo-Hutnicze BOLESLAW. It is the biggest zinc producer in Poland. The electrolytic zinc plant started up in 1955 with a capacity 15,000 tonnes per year, and multiplied its production by 5 till nowadays. At the beginning, the plant processed only calcine from zinc oxides (60% Zn, 3-4% Pb, 0,03 % Cd) which were produced from Waeltz fumes by calcination in a rotary kiln. Participation of calcine from zinc sulfide concentrates in the feed grew during the BOLESLAW plant expansion. Currently, only roasted sulphide concentrates, calcine from fluid-bed roasters, is processed. This paper presents a general description of the ZGH BOLESLAW plant and discusses the processes of roasting, leaching, purification and electrolysis. Also shown are the chemical analyses of the various process materials.

Fred C. Bond is recognized throughout the mineral processing world as the father of comminution equipment applied science and engineering. The Bond Work Index became a universal standard, and is the most widely used measurement tool for comminution energy consumption. This biography is the story of his lifetime of study, work experiences, experimentation, analyses and findings. His numerous published writings are reviewed. His legacy is one of comminution process engineering that will be used in perpetuity.

The use of the Bond Work Index to size industrial grinding equipment is well known. Its use to measure grinding efficiency was presented by C.A. Rowland, Jr. at an AIME meeting in 1976. However, due to a bureaucratic error, the paper was never submitted for publication. This metric has nevertheless been adopted by industry as a widely used standard. The purpose of this paper is to re-present and update the application of this tool as a standard for measuring grinding circuit efficiency. The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Shifting ground conditions when tunnelling often call for different methods of attacking the tunnel face. In order to overcome problems with local unstable soft ground in a hard rock tunnelling project the Boodex method offers a cost effective alternative. Boodex and variants of it is a combination of two well-known techniques, drilling with Boomer rig using Odex gear. It will give a steel lined hole ready for grouting and the steel pipe has a load bearing capacity that means that a spiling effect is achieved. In this paper the method and some applications will be described with possibilities and limitations.

THE Utah coal field to which the name Book Cliffs is applied runs in a northeast direction from Mt. Hilgarde, in Sevier county, along the escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau to the vicinity of Castle Gate, thence southeast along the Book cliffs, which lie to the north of and generally within sight of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,. to the Colorado line. The Book cliffs form the southern escarpment of the West and East Travaputs Plateaus, and vary in height from 2,000 to 6,000 ft. At the base of the Wasatch and Book Cliffs escarpments is a broad plain known as Castle valley. The coal beds outcropping in the escarpments along this valley are worked on the largest scale of any in the State, and this particular area is known locally as the Castle Valley coal field. Geology The Book cliffs are capped by the Tertiary-Eocene-formation, consisting of varicolored shales; buff sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate thin beds of limestone. Different sections show diverse stratigraphy. This is mainly the Wasatch formation, and lies unconformably upon the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous. Fig. 1 is a generalized section of the rocks of the. Book Cliffs field. The Mesaverde formation contains the cliff-making rocks of the Book cliffs, and is composed of massive sandstone interbedded with sandy shales and beds of coal and carbonaceous shale. The sandstone has greater resistance to erosion and the formation is characterized by escarpment ledges and cliffs. The shale is commonly sandy and is drab in color, but where it is associated with the coal it is usually carbonaceous. Alluvial gold grades are typically highly erratic. It is very often difficult to establish with confidence the in situ grades of reserve blocks due to the small number of pit or drill hole samples available, and their erratic values. Trends in grade are often obscure. Geostatical methods are inappropriate due to the extreme nugget effect found in alluvial gold field data. Classical statistics appear more suited to such data but require assumptions to be made regarding the nature of the population sampled. Recent developments in computer intensive non-parametric statistical methods provide a new approach to dealing with some of the above problems. These methods avoid making assumptions about the type of population distribution, usually through some kind of re-sampling scheme. The bootstrap procedure involves taking the estimate of interest and synthesising its population of by re-sampling the original data a large number of times (1000+), at random and with replacement. The synthetic population is then used to draw conclusions about the likely behaviour of the true population.

The feasibility evaluation of the Borealis project of Houston International Minerals Corporation (HIMCO) was initiated in October of 1980. The operation of the Borealis Mine and heap leaching plant began in late 1981. In order to achieve the rapid development schedule several items were necessary: 1) Pre-planning of environmental requirements and early study of key issues. 2) Adoption of conservative design criteria. 3) Coordination and cooperation between HIMCO and regulatory agencies. 4) Adoption of specialized engineering and construction procedures. 5) Careful evaluation of owner project management philosophy.

In order to better understand the effects of longwall mining on the methane reservoir overlying the panel, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health/Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (NIOSH/PRL) designed and implemented a vertical borehole monitoring experiment (BME) on an active longwall panel. The mine operates in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Greene County, Pennsylvania. The BME site was located away from either end of the panel to avoid mechanical influences caused by the draping of overburden in this region and was positioned at the same distance from the tailgate gateroad as the mine?s gob gas venthole sites. The borehole drilling depths and monitoring intervals were chosen to address a different stratigraphic zone in each of the three planned holes. The monitoring boreholes were positioned perpendicular to face advance using a close spacing pattern of about 15 m (50 ft) between collars. Boreholes were instrumented downhole and on the surface for various measurements. It was observed from the field data that the gob gas venthole fracture network formed 24-46 m (80-150 ft) ahead of the mining face. Overburden permeability?s within the same test zones increased 100 to 500 times following undermining. The borehole test interval within the fractured rock responded to overburden gas pressure while the test interval in the caved zone responded to mine ventilation conditions. Eight months after the boreholes were undermined, slug testing indicated permeabilities had increased further in the fractured rock zone. Measurements of surface movement indicate that the permeability development observed in the boreholes is a product of vertical subsidence without lateral movement within the tensional rock mechanics zone on a supercritical longwall panel. Results from this study suggest that maximum permeability in the longwall panel overburden is achieved 58 to 190 m (190 to 620 ft) behind the longwall following maximum compaction of the overburden.

The world-class Kramer sodium borate deposit is being developed by modern open pit operations near Boron, California. The deposit is a bedded, lenticular sedimentary sequence of borax and kernite crystals together with claystone. The borates dip south into a structural basin-bounding fault and were formed in the bottom muds of a permanent shallow lake. The lake was fed boron and sodium-rich solutions from a thermal spring source of volcanic origin. In addition to deposit geology, present day geotechnical concerns such as groundwater and slope stability will be discussed.

METALLURGISTS have used borax as a fluxing agent traditionally, but until recently elemental boron has played an insignificant role as an alloying element. Neither the metal nor its compounds have been regarded as important metallurgical materials and there is a surprising lack of knowledge concerning their metallurgical behavior. The new applications to steelmaking of both boron and borates, which arose in part from wartime incentives and restrictions, have been seriously handicapped by this lack of data. For example, rasorite, a naturally occurring sodium borate, has been shown to be an effective substitute for aluminum as a ladle deoxidizer in rimming steels.1 Likewise, the effectiveness of boron as an alloying agent has been demonstrated, 2,3 giving deep hardening when used in restricted amounts. The exploitation of both of these uses has been retarded by the difficulty of attaining suitable metallurgical control. Recognizing that the most important information required was a knowledge of the equilibrium between boron and oxygen dissolved in liquid iron, Gurry4 calculated this relation from the best thermal data available. However, estimates of the entropy of melting of boron, the activity coefficient of boron in liquid iron and the activity coefficient of B203 in slag were involved, and experimental work on this problem was obviously desirable. The experiments to be described were planned to establish the boron-oxygen relations in liquid iron and to demonstrate at the same time the ferroborate slag compositions in equilibrium with various amounts of oxygen in liquid iron. Accordingly, slags containing varying proportions of iron and boron oxides were held in contact with molten iron, and samples of both slag and metal were analyzed. The limitations upon the accuracy of the data will be considered, but in a practical sense the oxygen levels that can be attained in iron by iron borate slags, and the amounts of boron in iron at these oxygen levels were established. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE No entirely suitable refractory was found for the mixtures of iron oxide and boron oxide used as slags. Crucibles of silica, magnesia, Ramix, beryllia, and zirconia were all tried unsuccessfully. The most satisfactory method discovered for handling them was the rotating-crucible technique, which creates a parabolic crucible of liquid iron 5,6 Even this was not entirely successful, for at steelmaking temperatures (1600°C.) the slags had such a low surface tension that they crept up to the refractory and slowly dissolved it. The Bosphorus Rail Tunnel Project, located in Istanbul, Turkey, aims to provide a Euro-Asian rail link, via an immersed tube tunnel crossing the Bosphorus Strait, along which will run all commuter, freight and intercity passenger trains of Turkish State Railways (TCDD), as well as the future extension to the European rail network. The total length of upgrading and new railway construction will be approximately 76 km. The main structures include the immersed tube tunnel; mechanised shield tunnels; new Austrian tunnelling method (NATM) tunnels; cut-and-cover, at-grade and retained-cut/fill structures; and some service structures. This paper discusses Phase 1 implementation of the project, one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world today, whose varied structures present stimulating engineering and construction challenges.

"Molybdenum mineralization at Boss Mountain is hosted by the Triassic Takomkane quartz monzodiorite batholith and is associated with a Cretaceous monzogranite stock. Ore has been mined from a sheeted vein system that describes a partial annulus centred upon the apical region of the stock and from subvertical breccia pipes that emanate from the stock. Molybdenite precipitation is coincident with CO2 effervescence from a dilute (1.9 mole o/o NaC/ equivalent) hydrothermal fluid over a temperature range of 250°C to 370°C at a pressure of approximately 350 bars, interpreted to be greater than or equal to the lithostatic load and equivalent to a depth of 1.3 km or less.IntroductionThe chemical and thermal constraints on molybdenum transport and deposition to form molybdenum ore deposits are not well understood. To address this problem, the Boss Mountain mine in central British Columbia, operated by Noranda Mines Ltd., was chosen as a well-described (Soregaroli and Nelson, 1976), relatively small and simple example of a Cordilleran Mo~ deposit. It is situated on the northeast slope of Takornkane Mountain, 10 km west of the community of Hendrix Lake (N.T.S. 93A/2W; latitude 52°06'N, longtitude 120°56'W). Access is from 100 Mile House by nearly 90 km of road, the first 50 km of which are paved."
