I. INTRODUCTION The Atlanta Research Chamber is an UMTA-sponsored applied research facility studying tunnel design, excavation and support systems. It is located directly below Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It is included in the CN-120 contract to build the Peachtree Center subway station, a part of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) multi-billion dollar "Phase A" 53-mile transit project, which is 80 percent funded by UMTA with 20 percent provided by local authorities in Atlanta and Fulton and DeKalb counties (Figure 1). The Research Chamber is located immediately south of the main Peachtree Center Station cavern, and is in part an enlargement of the pre-existing Pilot Tunnel excavated to provide bidders on the CN-120 contract a view of the rock conditions (Figure 2). The Research Chamber lies some 3 meters above, and is approximately parallel to, the twin Running Tunnels. The Research Chamber is 18 meters long and has the same 5.5 meter diameter horseshoe shape design dimensions as the twin Running Tunnels.

Under an extremely aggressive schedule, final design of 13.5 km (8.4 miles) miles of 8.2 m (27 ft) diameter deep rock tunnel, 322 ML/day (85 million gallons / day)submersible pumping station and associated facilities were accomplished ahead of a federal court mandated consent decree schedule. Challenges overcome by the project team in enabling timely completion of the construction documents will be presented. Discussion includes evolution of final design, consideration of future O&M requirements, and risks identified for construction and operations, together with measures to manage and proactively prepare for such risks.

"The Atlantis II Deposit comprises metalliferous sediments (Zn+Cu+Ag+Au) accumulating in a composite, axial basin, 2,000m beneath the surface of the Red Sea. The basin contains warm, highly saline water. It is located approximately half way between Jeddah and Port Sudan within the Exclusive Economic zones of Saudi Arabia and Sudan. The Deposit was discovered in 1963 and evaluated by drilling in the 1970s and 1980s. This phase defined an initial resource of approximately 90Mt. More recent estimations have refined this figure to an Inferred Resource of approximately 80Mt (CIM compliant).The Mining Licence to develop and extract the Atlantis II Deep Deposit was granted to Manafai International Trade in 2010 by the joint Saudi-Sudanese Red Sea Commission. Manafai is poised to embark on a renewed phase of exploration and evaluation, including the completion of a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) and leading to the successful exploitation of the Deposit in a safe, environmentally sound, economically viable and socially responsible manner.The Deposit is forming in a complex basin adjacent the median rift, where sea floor spreading has operated during the last 5Ma. It is a Hydrothermal-sedimentary Deposit. The mineralised sedimentary rocks rest directly on sea floor basaltic rocks. They are produced by the exhalation of metal-rich, hydrothermal brines from fissures associated with the central rift and cross-cutting fracture zones. Up to 25m of metal-rich sediments have accumulated over an area exceeding 57km²."

The Atlas Concentrator, reputedly the largest in the Far East today, is located on the island of Cebu in the Republic of the Philippines. It started operation on a 4000 TPD capacity in 1955. An expansion program, coupled with significant improvements both in the Crushing Plant and the Mil, made the Atlas Concentrator what it is today, treating about 14,000 tons of ore per day at a comparatively low cost of about $0.50 per ton treated. The Atlas Copper Mine is at present mainly an open pit operation, with ore supplied from two pits (Lutopan and Biga) north of the Concen¬trator. Development of an Underground Mine, situated on the main ore body at Lutopan, which will be a block caving operation, has been underway since 1963, and this underground mining operation is expected to b e in full production by the latter part of 1966.

Among the various theories proposed to account for the spontaneous ignjtion of coal, one which has at times been very strongly held is that the initial heating is due to the oxidation of iron pyrites. From the results described in this paper, it is possible to calculate roughly the rate of spontaneous heating of a specimen of finely-divided pyrites, on the assumption that all the heat developed is used in raising the temperature of the pyrites, and that none is lost. It is clear that where finely-divided pyrites occurs in considerable proportion among coal, it may be the chief factor in originating combustion, but that pyrites can only be the cause of a heating when it is present in considerable proportion, and in a very finely-divided state

ANNOUNCEMENT on August 6 of the historic event of dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, was more dramatic even than V-E day, since that had so long been forecast whereas the bomb production had been the best-kept secret of the war, even though at one time more than 100,000 people had been at work in connection with its production, and some two billion dollars had been spent on the project. Mining men had long been aware of an unexplained abnormal interest in uranium production, and suspected that something of the sort was on foot, while metallurgists were aware that various men of their acquaintance were engaged in some top secret research. The first announcement was soon supplemented by other official releases which told more about the research laboratories for theoretical and pilot studies, and the plants in Tennessee and Washington, but none of them made clear what the modus operandi is of these terrific bombs. Inquiry at Colum. bia University, where Dr. Dunning and his associates had succeeded in 1939 in splitting the uranium atom, and where laboratories known only as SAM have been feverishly active since the beginning of the war, was unproductive, since none of those officially connected with the project could give out anything beyond the official releases.

THE means relied on to attain uniformity in Bessemer steel may be enumerated as follows I. The appearance of the flame. II. The appearance of the slag. III. The spectrum of the flame. IV. Examination of the steel itself. At present, I wish briefly to bring forward a few considerations with reference to the last two mentioned, namely, the conditions favoring the employment of the spectroscope and examination of the steel. From the amount of careful investigation which has been devoted to the examination of the Bessemer flame by the spectroscope, both on the part of scientists and practical metallurgists, one might reasonably expect some results definite and satisfactory in their nature, first, as regards the nature of the flame, and second, as to the practical value of the spectroscope as a guide in conducting the process. We find, in fact, however, that uncertainty and confusion still exist. In Germany, where this subject has received the greatest attention, it is now very generally conceded that manganese is the cause of the well-known groups of dark bands that characterize the Bessemer spectrum. Nor is it easy to see how we can avoid accepting this conclusion, when Wedding and Von Lichtenfels have produced the manganese spectrum and found it to correspond closely with that shown by the Bessemer flame. But it is evident, on a moment's reflection, as Roscoe has recently brought forward, that manganese cannot be the only cause of the Bessemer spectrum, for we notice the characteristic bands quite as

Abstract - The Aubry pegmatites are located on the Seymour Lake property, 15 km north of Lake Nipigon in northwestern Ontario. The property lies within the Caribou Lake-Marshall Lake greenstone belt along the English River-Wabigoon subprovince boundary of the Superior province of the Canadian Shield. The property was optioned in March 2001 by Linear Resources (now Linear Gold Corp.), who carried out gridding, prospecting, geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, trenching, channel sampling, and a total of 1,866 m of diamond drilling in 32 holes. The Aubry pegmatites are classified by Breaks et al. (2003) as complex type, spodumene-subtype, lithium-cesium-tantalum pegmatites (Cerný, 1989). These pegmatites generally form under high-pressure-low-temperature conditions, display complex internal zoning, have relatively low Nb/Ta ratios in the ore-forming assemblages, and contain significantly elevated tantalum values (Cerný, 1989). Other examples of spodumene-subtype pegmatites include the formerly producing Hugo pegmatite in South Dakota, and the currently producing Greenbushes pegmatite in Australia. The Aubry pegmatites occur as an undulating system of stacked sheets that dip moderately to steeply eastward over a 1-km strike length. The main portion of the North Aubry pegmatite ranges in true thickness from 10 to 28 m over a strike length of 125 m, whereas the thickest portion of the South Aubry has an estimated true thickness of 15 to 16 m over a minimum strike length of 95 m. The North Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike to the north, whereas the South Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike in both directions. The Aubry pegmatites are among the most highly evolved in Ontario, with the southern end of the North Aubry (trench 5/6 area) being the most highly fractionated (Breaks et al., 2002). Channel samples from the trench NA-5 area of the North Aubry pegmatite produced values up to 2.49 wt.% Ta2O5 over 4 m. Coarse manganotantalite crystals, up to 5 cm in diameter, from this trench contain up to 84.9 wt.% Ta2O5 (Breaks et al., 2002). Drill hole SL02-31 in the trench NA-6 area gave values of 0.046 wt.% Ta2O5 over 17.7 m, including 1 m @ 0.464 wt.% Ta2O5. Further exploration will focus on defining the grade of the North Aubry zone, extending and defining both known pegmatites, and identifying additional Ta-rich zones within them. Lithogeochemical and enzyme leach soil geochemical data suggest the presence of multiple undiscovered pegmatites on the property.

"Audiometric testing is a key element in hearing conservation in the mining environment. This paper gives the history of the audiometric testing program carried out by Inco Metals Company, including the program objectives the personnel and equipment involved, calibration and testing, the test procedure, and the classification and evaluation of the test results.IntroductionThe operations of the Ontario Division of Inco Metals Company are located primarily in the Sudbury District. They also include a refine ry at Port Colborne and a mine and concentrator at Shebandowan near Thunder Bay.The company operates nine underground mines, and one open pit, while maintaining six underground mines on a standby basis. Ore from these operations is processed in four concentrators. The metallurgical facilities include a smelter, a matte processing plant, a copper refinery, a nickel refinery and an iron ore recovery plant at Sudbury, and a nickel refinery at Port Colborne. Inco Metals currently mines roughly 9,000,000 tons annually and produces IS elements.Excessive noise in the work place has been a serious problem in the mining industry since the introduction of compressed-air-powered machinery in the last century. At the same time, growing levels of noise inherent in our social environment can threaten the hearing of employees and their families.Only in the last 20 years, however, has the extent of this problem and its implications for people working in the industry and their families been recognized. Since the industry has become aware of the situation it has taken steps to implement comprehensive noise reduction and hearing conservation programs."

The mining industry is faced with imperatives to improve worker safety and productivity, adapt to skills shortages, high worker turnover rates, and provide more effective maintenance to new and ever more complicated plant and equipment. While more effective use of data combined with advanced analytics offers opportunities for improvement, providing this information to the worker in the field, in real-time, has proven expensive, cumbersome and ineffective. New capabilities are now emerging which address some of the limitations experienced to date. Augmented reality (AR) provides a means to overlay interactive digital information on top of the physical world. Combining the latest visual display, mobile computing and ‘track and trace’ technologies, AR provides an experience similar to a heads-up display in a fighter jet through small, personnel devices, such as smart phones or wearable glasses. Applying AR would allow a mobile worker to ‘see’ all relevant information for a given task, in the context of their physical environment and at the time they require it. The technologies behind AR are rapidly maturing and becoming available at a price point that is viable for commercial applications. It is anticipated that AR will become ubiquitous at a consumer level within the next five years. The specific challenges faced by the mining industry make it an ideal early adopter of AR technologies. This paper examines a number of use-cases of how AR can be applied to the mining industry and the benefits that can be realised. The paper will identify areas of further work and viable opportunities for immediate adoption within the industry.

"The Aurora North mine has been operating for more than ten years, and is the source of over half of Syncrude’s bitumen production. The hydrotransport systems at Aurora experience high rates of wear, and mission lengths on current slurry pumps are nominally 1,500-2,000 hours. Recent work has enabled a better understanding of the significant adverse effect of large particle impingement damage to impeller vane leading edges - which is the known life determining issue for Aurora hydrotransport pumps. A new pump design has been developed and installed at Aurora, incorporating significantly increased impeller diameter and pumping vane lengths. The new pumps are expected to triple Aurora’s previous mission length for hydrotransport pumps. Part II of this paper will share actual hydraulic and wear performance observed in the first several months of operation, and draw comparisons relative to what was expected for these pumps in design / development.INTRODUCTION Slurry Pumps are Critical Equipment at Syncrude Slurry pumps are a key component in Syncrude’s operations. The Auscoke project has reached-a stage where a pilot plant nominally able to produce 100 t.p.d. of coked briquettes is being brought on stream during Nov. 1971 . The targets for this stage of the project are to establish the technological and economic value of Auscoke for the iron blast furnace, and to verify the commercial feasibility of large scale plants. The project originated at the B.H.P. Central Research Laboratories (C.R.L.) and work to date has shown that using a two stage contin- uous process, strong large coke can be produced at good productivities from medium or low volatile poorly caking coals. General features of the pilot plant and processing are discussed.

In this, the centennial year of The Institute, it is appropriate that the history of the Institute in New Zealand be recorded. I am indebted to John Dew, compiler of the centenary publication æMining People A Century - Highlights of the First Hundred Years of The AusIMM 1893 - 1993Æ, for many of the early historical references in this paper. In July 1892 the Amalgamated Mining Managers' Association of Australasia held its annual conference in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, when it was suggested by the delegate from Broken Hill that the time had arrived for the establishment of an Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers. Resulting from this meeting at Ballarat, a Provisional Committee was formed at Broken Hill with the object of forming The Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers having the following objectives. To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals, the welfare of those employed in those industries by means of meetings for social intercourse, and the reading and discussion of professional papers with the circulation by means of publications amongst its members and associates the information thus obtained.

The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) is a professional society for all those associated with the activities of the mineral industry. Differences of opinion exist within the membership of the AusIMM on the role it should play in the future as a professional society in a changing industry and world environment. This same dilemma is concerning other professional societies of which the author is a member. Some of the activities and priorities of the AusIMM are reviewed in order to clarify a frequently expressed opinion that it identifies with and supports industry at the expense of representing the interests of its individual members. By definition and by action this is certainly not the case and it is concluded that all activities whether seen to be industry or member orientated serve to benefit both. The AusIMM plays a most important role in integrating and promoting the interests of all sections of the mineral industry whether corporate or individual and the Presidential activities in education this year provide an excellent example of this.

The key drivers for the copper smelting industry are a complex mix of economic and "human" factors which combine to drive technology in new directions and can provide a strong indication of future industry trends. Recent examples have been the drive to achieve increased scale of production and resultant cost efficiencies by using a single furnace high intensity smelting vessel, and the broad acceptance of Top Submerged Lancing (TSL) technology for this duty. The development and adoption of continuous converting processes to counter the increased pressures faced by the Peirce Smith converting process is another example of the need for innovation. This paper discusses the merits of the continuous converting process, describes how the Ausmelt TSL batch converting process has been adapted to the new Ausmelt Continuous Copper Converting (C3) process in response to these industry trends and examines the Ausmelt continuous converting flowsheet options available to the end user.

SOME writers believe that when austenite transforms completely into pearlite on slow cooling through the thermal critical range, such transformation does not imply the formation of any of the so-called transition constituents: martensite, troostite and sorbite. Might it not be claimed with as much justification that when water freezes it does so suddenly, solid ice being obtained without passing through the intermediate stages of ice and water? Obviously, regardless of the speed of solidification, this would be erroneous. Before reaching the completed solid condition, this must of necessity pass through an unbroken series of stages when the system consists of mixtures of water and of ice, the former decreasing and the latter increasing in amount. Are not these "transition" stages in the freezing of water similar to the transition stages occurring in the transformation of austenite into pearlite? To clarify, let us consider in Fig. 1 the mechanism of the transformation of eutectoid steel from its austenitic to its pearlitic condition as it cools slowly through its thermal critical range. It is generally admitted that this transformation is the result of two distinct phenomena: (1) the allotropic change of gamma iron into alpha iron and (2) the crystallizing out of solution of the carbide Fe3C. Whether this crystallizing of Fe3C implies also its formation is immaterial for our purpose. In other words, whether it is the carbon in atomic dispersion which is present in gamma iron or molecules of Fe3C has no bearing upon the matter to be discussed. The transformation of gamma iron into alpha iron cannot take place suddenly. It must of necessity be progressive, regardless of the speed with which it may take place. At A, for instance, there would be present AB gamma iron and BC alpha iron. The distance MN does not refer to falling temperature, but to the passage of time. It may be assumed that the transformation takes place at a constant temperature (the Ar321 point). In a similar way, the crystallization of Fe3C out of the austenite solid solution must be progressive as depicted between M and N. At A there would be present AB gamma iron, BC alpha iron, CD carbon dissolved in gamma and in alpha iron and DE Fe3C. Since its introduction in 1989, the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Code (the JORC Code or the Code) has been one of the success stories of the informational interface between the mining industry and investors. This is due variously to the user-friendly nature of the Code itself, to its practical approach to this complex subject, and to the way in which its requirements have been implemented in practice. Recognition of its utility and effectiveness has influenced a significant number of mining countries to re-assess their reporting standards with the positive outcome being that for the first time, a set of standard international definitions for reporting of mineral resources and reserves is a realistic possibility.
