Plans for the Petroleum Division during the ensuing year are in process of development, in contemplation of the usual fall meetings in the Mid-Continent and California areas, as well as the annual meeting to be held in New York in February, 1936. Houston, Texas has been suggested as the place for the Mid-Continent fall meeting, the exact date to be announced shortly. During the past year, the Division's technical programs, as in former years, have emphasized the wide fields of engineering endeavor in the petroleum industry yet remaining for more thorough investigation and discussion. An effort has been made to bring an international interest into the proceedings of the Division by inviting the participation of prominent foreign technologists. This viewpoint should promote a continuation in 1935 of past high standards, afford a more thorough understanding of problems throughout the membership, and maintain the Institute's position among the various technical organizations functioning particularly in the oil-producing and refining areas. In the list of subjects proposed for the fall meetings is the problem of estimating petroleum reserves. Various factors requiring study will include productive sand volume, porosity, average permeability, saturation, and types of recovery. Research papers are proposed dealing with energy consumption per unit of oil recovered, reservoir pressure or energy loss relationship to the usual volumetric method of estimation, and the study of oil and gas segregation within the reservoir. Other subjects tentatively suggested include new casing practice in relationship to wells producing from several productive zones, progress in lifting methods, repressuring, advanced methods in drilling economies, and the economics of conservation. Although the threat of overproduction yet remains, to a lesser degree than during the past few years, intensive activity is now being directed towards the discovery of new petroleum reserves. This situation undoubtedly will influence, in some considerable degree, the channels through which technical activities will be directed. A continuation of the commendable work on production statistics for the various oil-producing states and foreign countries has been effected. The usual papers dealing with the general economics of the industry will be reserved for the annual New York Meeting. The Stabilization Committee maintains its membership of nationwide authorities, and interest is manifest in new developments to meet the changing requirements of the industry.

Mid-year meetings will be held at about the same time both in the Mid-Continent and California. The time will be selected if possible to coincide with the visits of President Lovejoy, who expects to be in California the last of September and in Texas early in October. Fort Worth, Dallas and Austin have been suggested for the Mid-Continent meeting. The Pacific Coast meeting will be held at Los Angeles. It is to be noted particularly that a Pacific Coast meeting was waived last year in favor of the annual meeting of the American Petroleum Institute, which was held at Los Angeles for the first time in nine years. It is hoped, and it was the understanding at the time among a number of individuals interested in both organizations, that in view of this action of the Petroleum Division the industry will give more than the usual support to the A.I.M.E. meeting this year. Ultimate Recovery is being considered as the keynote topic for the mid-year meetings. In view of trying financial conditions combined with an exceptionally high current potential rate of production, it is natural that the attention of the industry should be focused upon means of controlling production and reducing cost of operation. Following the usual custom, three meetings are planned for the year. The Mid-Continent meeting will be held at Oklahoma City, Okla., Oct. 7 and 8, and the California meeting is planned for Los Angeles, probably also early in October. A program along the usual lines is under way for the annual New York meeting. Discussion and planning of the year's activity started in March. An effort is under way to secure papers dealing with some overlapping phases of engineering, petroleum geology, geophysics, law, economics, refining, etc. The main reason for attempting a program along these lines is the belief that unusually interesting technical papers can be obtained. The degree of specialization in the technical and related fields has permitted but few individuals to develop a sufficiently comprehensive viewpoint. Also, at times the developments in a particular field are capable of giving great stimulus toward much needed solutions of difficult problems in others fields of activity. With the coming of the period of restriction of production to market demand, many changes have occurred in policy and technique of petroleum production. Some changes have been advances, others have been of retrograde nature. It seems doubtful whether the adjustment to the condition of excess producing capacity has been complete or sound in some major respects. Many changes are in progress and others need to be initiated. The industry has excessive producing capacity so far as immediate market demand is concerned, but reserves for several years hence are generally believed insufficient. Exploration and discovery should go forward but development should proceed with caution and under control. Property rights should be clarified and protected for the new condition— without excessive cost for drilling wells that serve no purpose except that of giving some protection to property rights at the cost of an increased price to the consumer. Under the more steady condition of assured supply for the immediate future, as compared to the hand-to-mouth condition of wide-open production, a greatly advanced technique of development and production is possible and is being developed. Great progress has been made, but much remains to be done. With the inauguration of Petroleum Technology this year, and approval by the Board to add an Assistant Secretary to the New York staff to serve the Petroleum and Coal Divisions, the Petroleum Division looks forward to greater opportunities and responsibilities. An improved medium of publication offers further incentive to engineers and investigators in the oil industry to make contributions. The authorization by the Board of Directors of a new Assistant Secretary is an appreciation of the splendid contributions made to the industry by the open forum of the Petroleum Division. It is also a recognition of the possibilities of greater service to the membership along the lines established ten to fifteen years ago by DeGolyer, Fohs, Ambrose and Lovejoy, to mention a few leaders. It isexpected that the new officer will spend a substantial part of his time in the field, visiting the student sections, the respective Divisions, helping in the arrangement of papers and Section meetings and intensifying interest in the Institute. The Petroleum Division will hold three meetings this year. The Fall Meetings will be held on Oct. 6 and 7 in San Antonio and on Oct. 20 and 21 in Los Angeles. The programs for these meetings will deal chiefly with engineering research and production engineering problems. Papers on production statistics and general economics of the industry are reserved for the Annual Meeting in New York. The annual production symposium and statistics are accepted as standard for the industry. With continuously deeper penetration into the earth in search for and exploitation of petroleum, it is necessary to have a better understanding of reservoir conditions and to place more phases of the operation under engineering control. Among the subjects relating to reservoir conditions tha thave been proposed for the fall meeting programs are phase equilibria at high pressures, interfacial tension between oil and water, the flow of oil and water through sands, the chemistry of films and underground temperatures. Investigations relating to control of operations include methods of continuously logging while drilling both visually and electrically, methods of studying drilling samples, properties of drilling fluids, improved cementing practices for isolating thin sands under high-temperature conditions and gas conservation, particularly production from high-pressure reservoirs. Additional suggestions of general themes or individual subjects will be welcomed, since it is desirable to build a backlog of material for Petroleum Technology. 9

Important industrial minerals are separated and concentrated by froth flotation by industry today. The following descriptions are presented as an overview of the methods employed to separate and recover a few of these industrial minerals. The minerals described in this section of the book are not, by any means, the only important minerals treated by froth flotation. Other minerals, such as calcite, kaolin, wollastonite, rare earths and vermiculite were not included, primarily due to the confidential nature of the information held by the Minerals Research Laboratory and the Colorado School of Mines Research Institute. Flotation of nonmetallic minerals is sometimes viewed as alchemy. However, the art is, in reality, based on sound chemistry, experience and a little luck in the treatment of new ores. In the flotation of nonmetallic minerals, as opposed to base metal sulfides, highly specific treatment conditions are required to accomplish separations. The presentation of the treatment of each of the minerals described was outlined as follows: DEPOSITS PROCESSING SPECIFICATIONS FLOWSHEETS (in some cases) A presentation of the factors, often critical, which must be carefully investigated to accomplish successful flotation of nonmetallic minerals is presented in the section on Sulfonate Collectors, elsewhere in this volume.

WITH the exception of the deposits of the Milburn Cement Co near Dunedin, Wilson's Portland Cement Co., on the Mahurangi River (a short distance north of Auckland), and those of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co., at Limestone Island, the cement. Tesources of New Zealand remain practically undeveloped. The Milburn Company utilizes a mixture of limestone and mud for the manufacture of cement, while Wilson's and the New Zealand Portland Cement companies both have the advantage of a natural cement stock which requires but small additions of highgrade limestone to give the mixture required. The plant and deposits of the New Zealand Portland Cement Co are located in Whangarei Harbour, some six miles from thetownship of Whangarei. The works and dwelling-houses are situated on Limestone Island, which, with an area of 92 acres, and rising to a height of 212 ft., supplies the bulk of the raw material required. In addition to the island, the company possesses a high-grade limestone area of, roughly, four acres, situated on the mainland, 11 miles to the south. A better location for a cement works could not well have been chosen. On the east side of the island there is a deep channel, which never shows less than 18 ft. of water alongside the company's...

The Yabulu Nickel Refinery commissioned in 1974, processes lateritic ore via a modified Caron process to produce high quality nickel and cobalt products. The Greenvale orebody provided the sole source of feed to the plant until 1990 and with well-blended mineralogy, it resulted in stable and predictable plant performance, allowing the operating focus to be on reducing energy consumption and increasing ore throughput. This approach provided better economics than pursuing increased reduction efficiency. From 1990, increasing quantities of lateritic ore were imported from Indonesia, Philippines and New Caledonia. This introduced considerable variation in ore blends and instability in plant operation but also provided the opportunity to treat higher grade ore blends which yielded higher reduction efficiencies. Ore reduction is conducted using 12 Herreshoff multiple hearth reduction furnaces, using heavy fuel oil as reductant. The æROASTERÆ Project was approved in November 2000 with the primary objective of improving Nickel reduction efficiency by: Stabilising Roaster Operation via a structured program including focused maintenance efforts, capital equipment upgrades, new process measurements, process re-design and improvements to operating skills and process troubleshooting. A structured technical program including laboratory and plant studies using one plant furnace as a pilot unit to develop improved knowledge of how the reduction process proceeds in the Herreshoff furnace. Armed with this knowledge, optimised process conditions and a reduction process model were developed contributing to a significant demonstrated reduction efficiency improvement. Technical input to the project was provided by QNI with Hatch providing the engineering and project management for the $8.5 M capital work. Execution of the work included extensive consultation with the plant operators and close cooperation between the Hatch project team and QNI operations personnel ensuring installations were completed with minimal production disruption. A strong focus on safety management resulted in a number of brownfields project relevant safety initiatives being implemented resulting in project completion without a serious injury.

The Sunshine Mining Co. has recently started up its new silver refinery in Kellogg, ID. The new plant recovers silver anc copper values from a high grade tetrahedrite concentrate using hydro- metallurgical processes. The plant and process are both new and have gone through the initial startup phase during the first six months of 1985. The full scale plant was developed from laboratory test work. While the metallurgy of the process worked as expected, the material handling problems were difficult to over-come. As might be expected, those parts of the plant that represented available technology started up easily, while the parts that represented new technology presented the most difficulty. Topics covered in this paper include: 1) insufficient type and amount of agitation in the leach vessels, 2) discharge of a non- homogeneous slurry from the leach vessels, and 3) problems associated with very low flow rates in slurry lines.

"AbstractThe value of anomalous metal contents of trees as an aid to the discovery of mineral deposits was tested under field conditions cm four known ore deposits. Results indicate that a base-metal deposit, or any deposit containing zinc or copper, casts a 'metal shadow' into the overlying soil which remains approximately positioned above the deposit, regardless of the type of overburden or the movement of groundwater.The unusually high content of zinc or copper in trees growing within the limits of this 'metal shadow' constitutes an anomaly which can be detected and ,plotted in the field The field kit and certain points of the field technique are described briefly; and the characteristics of plant anomalies and possible limitations of their use are mentioned.IntroductionRecent investigations concerning the metal content of trees indicate not only wide variations in the metal content of different species and in different parts of the same tree but, in addition, suggest that the metal content of a tree is related to that of the subjacent bed-rock. Abnormal values found by Warren, Delavault, and others in trees growing above or near orebodies suggest a new tool which may prove of considerable value in exploration work. Evaluation of this new tool must involve consideration of the following questions:(I) Is the technique one which can be used under field conditions by persons not specially trained; and can results be duplicated within reasonable limits of error? Rather than taking tree samples for subsequent laboratory analysis, it is highly desirable that analyses be made on the spot. This allows anomalous results to be checked and additional samples may be taken at key points."

"This paper concentrates on the four recent plant trials/ applications of froth washing. Results showed that improved metallurgical performance can be achieved with wash water. Increased froth cleaning yielded better upgrading, and some cases slightly improved recovery. Froth sampling and salt tracer tests supported the findings of froth washing tests.At Falconbridge, Ni grade increased from l.47% to 2.15% and recovery from 85% to 87%. At Eastmaque, final Au grade increased from 2.3 to 2.7 oz/st at a slightly higher recovery. At Les Mines Selbaie, Cu grade increased from 24.5% to 25.S% and Zn grade from 54.5% to 56.l%. At Zinc Corp. of America, average Zn grade increased from 55% to 56. 8% at the same recovery for a 45-day period. A number of plants in Canada and the United States have evaluated and/or now practicing froth washing. Wash water has now proved itself in some plants over several months of operation.INTRODUCTIONFroth washing in mechanical flotation cells offers a number of metallurgical (i. e. increased grades and/or recoveries) and economical (i.e. decreased transportation and smelting & refining costs) benefits. Fundamental development work in laboratory and pilot scales performed at McGill yielded encouraging results. (Kaya and Laplante, 1988a and 1989a). Since laboratory and pilot flotation performance can differ from full-scale due to differences in hydrodynamics, kinetics, and froth characteristics (e.g. stability, loading etc.), plant trials were essential to prove the viability of this technology."

The economic profitability of any mineral company is dependent upon maximizing mineral recoveries while minimizing costs. The effectiveness of any strategy to meet this objective is dependent upon firstly obtaining quantitative information concerning the steady-state metallurgical balance of the plant, and secondly, how efficiently this information is used to improve/optimize plant performance. This two-step approach can be designated as a "plant audit." Plant audits on a routine basis can be very expensive and time-consuming. Most plants have reduced staffs to cut costs. The remaining staff has to spend time to solve production/operation problems, thereby leaving limited resources (i.e., people, time, and money), for plant auditing. This paper briefly reviews plant auditing categories, and a systematic approach to auditing which has been successfully used at several operations. An example illustrating the use of this approach in gold operations is discussed in this paper.

THE scope of this article covers only the mathematical principles involved in discounting to present worth future expected profits and it is believed answers definitely two questions, which were raised at a recent meeting of the Committee on Methods of Valuing Coal Properties, as follows: 1. The accumulative effect of carrying charges on the value of coal mines showing definitely the number of years beyond which the coal may not be mined at a profit and subsequent to which the possession of any unmined coal will be a liability rather than an asset. 2. The effect on the valuation of coal mines, in the presence of the carrying charges described in question 1, of an increase in plant capacity and production. In general, in considering these questions, it may be stated that the consideration of an increase in plant capacity and production follows as a matter of course after a determination has been made of the year beyond which no profits are to be realized (giving the carrying. charges accumulative effect, or in other words capitalizing the carrying charges, as shown hereinafter). For example, if it is determined that any coal that is unmined after 45 years will have no value or less than no value, the question immediately arises as to whether or not a plant should be constructed that would result in a yearly production great enough to extract the entire tonnage in a time less than 45 years, and if so the number 'of years less than 45 years that would, from a financial stand-point, be the most desirable, all under the assumption that the market for the product or the transportation facilities are such that the yearly production can be increased to the desired amount.

The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. Several aspects of the computer system are outlined.

WITH coal-preparation plants becoming more complex and containing widely diversified types of equipment and processes, it is necessary that considerable control be exercised in their operation. Rising mine costs make it imperative that close check be made of plant efficiencies to assure a minimum loss of coal to the refuse bank. Further, much of the coal sold today is sold on a competitive specification basis, and this makes it necessary to provide frequent analyses and inspections. Many ' plants are required to operate on a two or three-shift basis, and as a con- sequence an efficient organization is required to eliminate down time and provide for smooth low-cost operation. ORGANIZATION Probably the most important item for successful operation of a preparation plant is a capable, properly organized staff, with the individual workers properly informed and well trained for their particular jobs, clear-cut lines of authority among the supervisors and in general a standard operating procedure for most conceivable conditions that may occur. The idea of placing the older, partially disabled and generally incompetent coal miner in the cleaning plant, as was the practice on the earlier tipples, is entirely inadequate in a modern complex cleaning plant. The new plants require intelligent, alert, and reasonably educated men. With perhaps millions of dollars invested in an installation, it is poor business to use other than a well organized, well trained, and properly supervised force. Organizations naturally must vary with the size of the plant and local conditions; whether it is a central cleaning plant at a distance from the mine organization or one of several cleaning plants operated by the company. Smaller operations can be operated by a washery foreman, under the supervision of the mine superintendent or perhaps the "outside" superintendent. Large installations should have a plant superintendent either responsible to the mine superintendent or preferably, where possible, responsible to a preparation manager or engineer. Early in the design stage of their new concentrator for the Mount Wright Plant, Quebec Cartier Mining decided to use a process computer for total control of crushing, grinding and concentrating. A map of the area is given in figure 1 and a view of the plant in figure 2. Although the use of process computers is not a new idea in petrochemical and chemical industries, their use in the mining industry is very limited. We innovated in using the computer, not only for data logging, as we have seen in some other plants, but a sole operator located in the administration building, starts and stops mill lines, crushers, load-out system, tailings, thickeners, etc ... by means of a CRT console. Our process is fairly simple as can be seen on the schematic process flow diagram (figure 3). .The ore, carried by 136t diesel electric trucks, is dumped through ore pockets onto two primary pan feeders. The feeders supply two 1,52mx2,79m gyratory crushers which reduce the ore to minus 20,32 cm. Each crushing line have a capacity of 5600t per hour and feed a shuttle conveyor distributing the crude ore into six silos.
