Olympic Dam Operation is located in the Stuart Shelf Geological Province approximately 520 km north-north-west of Adelaide in South Australia. It is estimated to be one of the worldÆs top five copper orebodies by size and the biggest single occurrence of uranium. The deposit was discovered by Western Mining Corporation in 1975. Exploration was based on a conceptual model for the formation of sediment hosted copper deposits together with gravity and magnetic anomalies.The capital cost of the current expansion is estimated to be A$ 1.64 billion. The underground expansion includes a total of 36 km of lateral development, a railway haulage system delivering ore from a series of ore passes to a new crusher station and a significant increase in ventilation capacity and mine services.In the current underground expansion the mining method will essentially remain unchanged. The ore handling system will incorporate some recent advances in technology, improving efficiency and safety standards.Major infrastructure excavations are designed by a team of engineers attached to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project and a number of consulting groups. Once the expansion is fully completed it is expected to increase the current annual underground production level from 3.4 Mt to 9.0 Mt of ore by the year 2000. Mine design engineers working for the Olympic Dam Operation have recently completed a three year final design plan to achieve this target.Access to the existing mine is through the decline and Whenan shaft. The Whenan shaft was originally sunk as an exploration access and later upgraded for hoisting. The 4 km long service decline connecting to the Whenan shaft was later constructed to accommodate the increase in service demand. The Robinson and Sir Lindsay Clark shafts were developed at later stages to cater for the hoisting during and following the expansion lead up.

The Olympic Dam copper/uranium deposit was discovered in 1975 and subsequently commenced production in 1988 at a rate of 1.5 Mtpa using the sublevel open stoping mining method. In the following five years the operation underwent two optimisation programs that have increased mine output to the current rate of 3.4 Mtpa of ore. The pre-expansion requirements were annual development of approximately 10 000 m and the placement of around 500 000 m 3 /yr of cemented backfill. Previous to 1995 all hoisting was carried out by the Whenan shaft. The Robinson shaft was commissioned during that year to hoist increasing development mullock tonnages and to allow for increased ore hoist via the Whenan system. In 1996 WMC committed to expanding the output of the operation from 85 000 tpa (1996/97 budget) copper metal to 200 000tpa. The corresponding increase in mine ore production requires expansion to a nominal rate of 9.0 Mtpa. To achieve these increased tonnages, major hardware installations will include sinking of a third shaft capable of hoisting in excess of 9.5 Mtpa, a rail haulage horizon utilising automatic trains, expansion of the existing backfill plant to a production capacity of over 1.8 million m 3 /yr, increasing long term development rates to 15 000 m/yr and increasing the production drilling and blasting rates in line with the higher stope production output. This paper provides detail into the intended hardware (shafts, equipment, etc) of the mining system, and outlines the intended long-term operation and management of the operation. Of particular note is the background requirement of ensuring existing production targets are met to provide critical cashflows into the project during the period of expansion.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

Olympic Dam is a world-class deposit and is unquestionably one of the most geologically, structurally and texturally complex orebodies in the world. As development advances into the Southern Mine Area (SMA) the geological understanding is rapidly evolving as underground drill rigs are prioritised to provide the additional data necessary to convert Indicated and Inferred Resources into Measured Resources. The SMA represents approximately 70 per cent of Olympic Dam’s total resource and is significantly more complex when compared to the Northern Mine Area with respect to the diverse nature and origin of lithotypes, rock mass characteristics and the extent of major structures controlling primary mineralisation trends.Recent mine development into the central SMA has been impacted by a major structural gouge zone. Sound geological interpretation allowed mine geologists to successfully integrate their local understanding of the distribution of lithotypes with critical geotechnical data, chiefly rock quality designation (RQD), to delineate and better predict this major structural gouge zone. As a direct result, development rates improved whilst also increasing awareness for the importance of sound geological interpretation utilising all available data. In order to maximise predictability across all systems in place through the mining geology value chain, the integration of geological and geotechnical data in a geotechnical RQD block model provides an additional tool to assist in preventative solutions for complex problems to achieve a proactive mining environment.This paper details the methods used to build the RQD block model, the geostatistical estimation parameters, 3D geotechnical domain wireframes, challenges regarding legacy approaches, and collection of geotechnical information and incorporating/linking geotechnical data with geological features, including the use of grade and lithotype domains. Although the geotechnical block model proved difficult and complex to construct, the resultant product has seen successful integration of geological and geotechnical data into mine planning providing higher resolution of critical parameters for local mining areas.CITATION:Clark, J M, Passmore, M and Poznik, N, 2017. The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located approximately 520 km north-northwest of Adelaide, South Australia (Figure 1) was discovered in 1975 by Western Mining Corporation. A joint venture to facilitate development of the deposit was formed in mid-1979 between WMC (51 per cent) and the British Petroleum Group (BP, 49 per cent). Production commenced in 1988, and current annual output from the mining and treatment of 2.2 Mt of ore is approximately 65 000 t of refined copper and 1400 t of uranium oxide. Significant amounts of refined gold and silver are also produced.

This paper discusses the implementation of an underground rail haulage system during a major expansion of the Olympic Dam mine in 1998. The factors affecting the selection of rail haulage are discussed and details are provided on the rail system, which is designed to transport more than 10.5 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa). The reliability of the system during commissioning is discussed, including the decision to manufacture a ædummyÆ locomotive in order to keep the system operational. Finally, reliability improvements made both during and after commissioning are discussed with comments provided on the effectiveness of the system as it operates today.

Canadian mining giant Teck Resources Ltd. will be the exclusive supplier of the metals used in the production of the more than 1,000 medals to be awarded at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Teck, the diversified resource company headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is providing 2.05 kg (4.5 lbs) of gold, 1,950 kg (4,300 lbs) of silver and 903 kg (2,000 lbs) of copper sourced from its operations around the world. In addition to the raw materials mines, this year?s medals will make Olympic history as they will be the first to contain metals recovered from processing the circuit boards from end-of-life electronics (e-waste) that would have otherwise been destined for a landfill. After mining or production through a variety of smelting and recovery processes, each metal has been refined to enhance the metal purity.

"Orway Mineral Consultants Ltd (OMC) as a consultancy has specialized in comminution circuit design for over 30 years. The OMC Power Model is OMC’s in-house software for specific grinding energy power-based circuit calculations. The model uses ore hardness parameters from testwork, circuit configuration, equipment geometry and operating conditions as inputs. The model combines proprietary and published power models to predict the total specific energy and the specific energy for each of the components of the comminution circuit. This makes the software a valuable tool for the design and validation of JKSimMet modelling or actual plant performance. Proprietary calculations have been developed and reconciled with over 100 plant benchmark projects encompassing a variety of comminution circuit configurations.This paper describes the OMC approach for determining power requirements for the design of grinding circuits. The accuracy of the OMC Power Model software is confirmed through plant survey benchmark performance and comparisons are made with other power modelling techniques. Practical examples are presented, showing applications for single stage SAG (SS-SAG), SAB and SABC circuit configurations.IntroductionConventional low throughput grinding options, consisting of multi-stage crushing followed by rod and ball mills, have almost become obsolete in the move to higher milling rates required to process lower metal grades. Grinding circuits with fully autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous (SAG) mills, often combined with ball mills are now the standard to meet the high capacity requirement for processing ores with lower metal grades. Simulation software and power-based equation methodologies have been established for designing AG/SAG based grinding circuits and predicting their energy requirements.Presently, power-based equations remain the principal method for designers to size mills and estimate the power requirement for comminution circuits. The technique is simple and it relies on the design to specify a feed and product size plus a hardness index to produce a specific energy value (kWh/t). The desired throughput of the mill is multiplied by the specific energy to give the mill power requirement, which is used in turn to size a mill for dimensions, internal geometry and loading conditions to match the power draw."

"The Omega mine is in McVittie township in the Larder Lake area, Ontario. Production at the mine commenced in 1936, and, until the end of 1946, ore milled amounted to 1,558,604 tons, from which 207,074 oz. gold and 28,205 oz. silver, valued at $7,585,470, were recovered. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1,975 feet.GEOLOGYThe geology of the mine has been described in detail by C. P. Jenney (l) and the writer (2). The general geology and structure in the vicinity of the mine is discussed on an earlier page in this volume. The rock formations found in the mine workings are indicated on the accompanying plan and section (Figs. 1and2). They consist of an intermingled, south dipping complex of volcanics, sediments, and secondary talc-chlorite schists and carbonates. The carbonatized rocks, which are often referred to as 'dolomite' in the Larder Lake camp, are siliceous-carbonate replacements in the talc-chlorite schist zones. In places they contain green mica, probably fuchsite, and are cut by a stockwork of quartz veinlets and stringers. A stock of syenitic intrusives lies south of the mine workings.STRUCTUREThe main structural features are indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The formations and orebodies have a pronounced southerly dip, which flattens with depth. The talc-chlorite schist and 'dolomite' zones are part of the Larder Lake fault or 'break' on which there appears to be very large displacement. Evidence throughout the district would indicate that the south side moved up and, in the case of the Omega mine, the thrust may have been distributed throughout the several intensely sheared zones. This slice faulting could account for the repetition of sediments and volcanics. An alternative possibility would be original interbedding of volcanics and sediments."

This paper documents the development of a user-friendly computational program, which has been constructed to assist the mine ventilation engineer in the optimal design and operation of methane drainage ranges. In the past, many computer tools for ventilation engineers led to the development of `research systems'. These computer systems, although developed with the needs of the industry in mind were due to a combination of inexperienced programming methods and the availability of suitable user interface software not easily accessible to the practising engineer. Recent developments in computer hardware and software (particularly windows based graphical user interfaces) mean that engineers no longer need to dedicate large amounts of valuable time to become familiar with often complex items of software. The authors of this paper intend to demonstrate a practical system which successfully integrates complex mathematical models, an easy to use interface and knowledge based techniques. The graphical interface guides the user to draw on the screen a mimic diagram representation of the methane drainage network. The user is prompted, during the construction of the drawing, to input the information and data required by the calculation and knowledge based procedures. The computer program then calculates all of the flows, purities and pressures throughout the network. Given reliable measured data from an existing range a comparative analysis can be performed between the predicted and measured network flow data. A knowledge-based system may utilise this analysis to either update the operational status of the network or suggest either a reasoned maintenance or remedial strategy to improve the performance of the drainage system. The development of the OMEN project has been carried out at the request of the Midlands Group, British Coal Corporation, Edwinstowe. The system is about to be field tested at a number of mines. It is hoped that when this paper is presented that the system will be used at both Group and mine level.

"On April 22, 1980, the Ontario government introduced a totally new incentive program for mineral exploration in the province to be effective September I, 1980. Replacing the former Mineral Exploration Assistance Program (MEAP) and also the assistance formerly provided to the mining sector under the Small Business Development Corporations Act, the new Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP) promises to offer a valuable benefit to certain eligible applicants.Unfortunately, the program is not without its shortcomings: the eligibility for grants or tax credits under the program is comparatively restrictive, and an October 1980 federal budget provision to amend income tax legislation would blunt some of the originally intended attractiveness of the grants and credits.IntroductionIn his budget of April 22, 1980, Ontario Treasurer Frank Miller introduced a new incentive program to encourage mineral exploration in the province.The Ontario Mineral Exploration Program (OMEP) replaces the Mineral Exploration Assistance Program (MEAP), which will be phased out by March 31, 1981. Exploration programs approved under MEAP will continue to qualify for incentives under that program, but will not qualify for OMEP."

This paper studies the features of known and newly synthesized dialkyldithiophosphates and reagents with thioamide groups when separating copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals in the flotation of skarn-scheelite-sulphide ore at the Primorskaya concentration plant. The optimization of dialkyldithiophosphate collectors was based on the study of their surface activity at the liquid-gas interface and estimated hydrophobic abilities. The flotation experiments show that the selectivity of action of the reagent increases with an increase of its surface activity and a reduction of hydrophobic ability when separating chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. IMA-225-5 was proposed as a more efficient dialkyldithiophosphate collector, which increases the recovery of copper by 2.8% compared to the industrially used collector IMA-I413. Selection of the optimal structure for reagents with thioamide groups (derivatives of thionocarbamate and thiourea) was carried out according to their acidity and the presence of hydrophilic particles in their structure. Calculations were performed depending on the pH of the solution of chalcopyrite to determine the optimum reagent sorption and to further optimize the structures of these reagents. The tests with reagents with thioamide groups show an increase in copper recovery by 3-4% together with a significant increase of arsenic content compared to IMA-225-5. As a stronger collector with thioamide groups, it was recommended to use sample 234, which belongs to the thiourea derivatives. IMA-225-5 was recommended for industrial tests at the Primorskaya concentration plant. Thus, this study has shown that using dialkyldithiophosphate is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the selectivity of separation of copper-containing and arsenic-containing minerals, and using reagents with thioamide groups, or their combinations with dialkyldithiophosphates, is more appropriate if it is necessary to increase the recovery of copper or the quality of copper concentrate with less selectivity of the process.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH-OMSHR) currently is leading an effort in the development of the next-generation self-escape apparatus as part of the research imperative directed by the MINER Act of 2006. A multifaceted contract program over the past 3 years delivered key components and base breathing modules to form the basis for developing backpack and vest-style versions of dockable self-contained (closed-circuit) self-escape respirators with hoods (CCMERs). This paper outlines the current status in developing the CCMER that incorporates a docking and switch-over valve (DSOV) for seamless transfer from one breathing device to another, and a hood with an inner mask and speech diaphragm (HMC) for ease of donning, ease of use, and communication ability. Three versions of the CCMER are being pursued, namely: the CCMER-B, which can be worn as a backpack and incorporates the features of a miner’s belt; the CCMER-V, which is worn similar to a miner’s vest and attaches to a miner’s belt; and the CCMER-C, a breathing module cached along the escape route that can be docked to the -B and -V versions. Human factors considerations are a key element in the CCMER design, as it is to be continually worn by the miner while underground, and must be readily accessible for deployment when needed. The CCMERs are designed to be capable of being certified to 42 CFR part 84 standards, including sub-part O for mine use, and to meet MSHA permissibility regulations for use in underground mines. They are sized for sufficient oxygen capacities (Cap 2 and Cap 3 as defined in sub-part O) to yield a duration that is of practical use in a mine escape scenario. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is leading the development of self-escape apparatuses to provide breathing gas to mining personnel operating in the event of an emergency in various capacities underground in environments containing hazardous gas components. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) and input from the mining community called for the need to move Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) technology to a next-generation status. In response to this need, NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) established a strategic plan to develop key components and devices with help from external experts knowledgeable in breathing apparatus designs. The US Navy was identified as a key expert in this field through its extensive experience in diving apparatus and life support systems, and development work commenced through Inter-Agency Agreements with OMSHR. A contracts program was also launched with industry experts specializing in this field. This paper outlines the current status in developing the Next-Generation Closed-Circuit Mine Escape Respirators (CCMERs) that could be used for surviving and escaping from a mine following an emergency that renders the mine atmosphere irrespirable."

(Read at Amenia Meeting, October, 1877.) AT the Wilkes-Barre Meeting of the Institute, Dr. J. Lawrence Smith, in the course of his remarks on some peculiarities in the composition of irons, alluded to the so-called " buckshot" iron, and exhibited a specimen of this material. He said that when the small granules, or shot, were separated from the mass, they could be flattened under the hammer, and inferred that these particles had been decarburized by the blast before sinking into the hearth of the furnace, and thus we had the exceptional production of wrought iron in the blast furnace. I have recently obtained a characteristic specimen of this variety of iron from one of the furnaces at Orbisona, Pa. Considerable uncertainty existed as to its true nature and the conditions of its production. Its weight seemed to preclude the idea that it contained much or any slag, yet its lack of strength indicated that it was not homogeneous cast iron. At times considerable quantities had been produced, which could only be utilized by charging in the furnace and remelting. The specimen, on the freshly fractured surface, appeared to consist of flattened globules of iron cemented together by a bluish material which one would naturally suppose to be slag, and qualitative examination for lime strengthened this supposition. It was quite difficult to obtain drillings, as there was a tendency to split in several directions as soon as pressure was applied ; but enough was obtained to undertake quantitative determinations. They were found to consist of two portions-one attracted by the magnet, and the other not. By repeated separation the magnetic portion was found to be 94.44 per cent., and the non-magnetic 5.56 per cent. Analyses of these gave the following results :

The purpose of the present communication is to put on record the discovery, in October, 1916, in the Howqua district, of a new locality for the occurrence of phosphatic rocks in Victoria, and to give a preliminary description of its characters and geological occurrence. Owing to the great use of superphosphates for agricultural purposes in recent years in Australia, search has been stimulated for the discovery of local and workable supplies of phosphatic rocks. Phosphorus is an element very widely distributed in igneous rocks, usually in the form of the mineral apatite, and also occurs in sedimentary rocks and in soils as a detrital constituent. Under these conditions of occurrence, however, the amount of P 205 present in a rock or soil seldom approaches, and very rarely exceeds, 1 %. Very occasionally it occurs in such a concentrated form as to constitute workable deposits. In such cases they are usually of organic origin. Sometimes they occur as geologically recent deposits of guano or rock...

The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many 'years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a 'start-up' of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. Experimental data 1,2 on the energy dissipation in polycrystalline materials over a large frequency spectrum (10-2 cps to 106 cps) suggests that the quality factor [(e= Q )] is independent of the frequency providing both fluid-saturated and ferromagnetic materials are excluded from the test data. Additional data 3 suggest that the quality factors are less at high pressures than at low pressure, i.e., Q increases as the pressure increases. Observations on the dissipation of single quartz crystals with their polycrystalline counterparts indicate that the energy dissipation is less for the single crystal than for the aggregate .2 Both of the above observations, particularly the latter, are indicative of the fact that the dissipation increases with increasing surface contact within the polycrystal, i.e., a frictional attenuation scheme may be operative. Knopoff and MacDonald 4 have shown that a friction model gives rise to a quality factor frequency independence property. A partial listing of some values of Q, observed for both metals and non-metals, is given in Tables I, II, and III. In Tables I and II, the data all show Qs>Qp, i.e., the energy loss per cycle for compressional body waves is greater than that for shear waves of the same frequency. Most samples in Table III show the same effect. It is objective of this paper to suggest: (1) a frictional attenuation scheme may account for the observed losses incurred during the propagation of low amplitude stress waves in dry brittle rock and, in particular, that such a scheme can account for the observed relative magnitudes of the quality factors for P and S wave motion; (2) a friction scheme can readily explain the difference between the dynamic and static moduli in dry brittle rock; (3) a friction scheme, while in itself an intrinsically

MORE than twelve years were spent by Wöhler at the instance of the Prussian Government in experimenting upon the resistance of iron and steel to repeated stresses. The results of his experiments are expressed in what is known as Wöhler's law, which is given in the following words in Du Bois's translation of Weyrauch :* "Rupture may be caused not only by a steady load which exceeds the carrying strength, but also by repeated applications of stresses, none of which are equal to the carrying strength. The differences of these stresses are measures of the disturbance of continuity, in so far as by their increase the minimum stress which is still necessary for rupture diminishes." A practical illustration of the meaning of the first portion of this law may be given thus : If 50,000 pounds once applied will just break a bar of iron or steel, a stress very much less than 50,000 pounds will break it if sufficiently often repeated. This is fully confirmed by the experiments of Fairbairn and Spangenberg, us well as by those of Wöhler; and, as is remarked by Weyrauch, it may be considered as a long-known result of common experience. It partially accounts for what Mr. Holley has called the "intrinsically ridiculous factor of safety of six." Another "long-known result of experience "-although this has not, as the writer believes, been investigated by scientific experimenters-is the fact that rupture may be caused by a succession of shocks or impacts, none of which alone would be sufficient to cause it. Wrought iron will crystallize by repeated blows in service and become weaker than cast iron. Iron axles, the piston-rods of steam-hammers, and other pieces of metal subject to continuously repeated shocks invariably break after a certain length of service. THE eccentric theodolite I exhibit is one constructed by the Stack-poles of New York, from drawings, considerably modified, of Combes's theodolite. The telescope is on one side of the horizontal limb, and the vertical circle is opposite to the telescope; thus they nearly balance each other, making already the construction lighter than in the instrument of Combes, where the telescope and vertical circle are together on the same side, and are both balanced by a considerable weight. The instrument stands upon three levelling screws or feet, an improvement upon the old or general style of mounting a transit on four feet-for indeed the instrument is easier levelled, and, more-over, stands more stable on three than on four points of support. The general advantage of an eccentric theodolite is evident, namely, that it can measure any and all vertical angles, from 0 to 360, without being interfered with by the horizontal limb as is the transit; besides this advantage, it needs no preparatory adjustment or correction for eccentricity ; on the other hand, however, that correction

NICKEL minerals are known in New Brunswick but have never been reported from Nova Scotia. The attention of the writers was drawn to an occurrence of pyrrhotite, reported to carry nickel, at the Second Gold brook, Middle river, Cape Breton. The purpose of this paper is to record the occurrence and give an account of the general geological association. In a later paper it may be possible to give greater details? than are available at present. GEOLOGY The area lies at the edge of a plateau of Precambrian rocks which forms the panhandle of Cape Breton island. This plateau has a general elevation of 1,200 feet. Middle river, with its tributaries, the First, Second, and Third Gold brooks drains the area. The lower country to east and southeast of the plateau is underlain by lower Carboniferous sediments. The rocks of the plateau are presumably of Precambrian age but have never been definitely correlated with the Gold-Bearing Series of the mainland. ?There i:s; however, some resemblance, although they have apparently been more intensely mountain-built. They are essentially fine grained, sheared quartzites and slates . The general strike is east and west, with a north dip of 45° to 55°. There are smalllocal drag-folds in the area. The only igneous rock in the immediate vicinity is an intrusive pink porphyry. It has small phenocrysts of quartz and feldspar. It has intruded the sediments generally along the structural planes, but in places crosses the structure . Its intrusive character is further proved by the fact that it contains xenoliths of the quartzite.
