EXACT information as to performance of the gas lift from the mechanical engineering standpoint is hard to obtain. Several hundred wells are now producing in California fields by means of the gas lift, and a survey of results shows that the gas lift has increased production at these wells by approximately 60 percent. Similar or even larger figures describe results in Mid-Continent fields. Such an increase in output of oil is so satisfactory, to the average oil producer, that it may not encourage investigation looking to more efficient operation. The cost of lifting oil by compressed gas varies from 3 c. to 15 c. per bbl. of oil, depending upon the efficiency of the gas lift. A difference of 10 c. or 12 c. per bbl. of oil is immediately noticed by an oil operator and the cost in production is as real to him as is the price of his product. Therefore, the efficiency of gas-lift process deserves more consideration than it has been given in some quarters. It has been found that there is a wide variation between different operators and at different wells in the amount of gas used per barrel of oil lifted. Some of the most efficient operations show oil being lifted with only slightly over 400 cu. ft. of gas per bbl. of oil.1 On the other hand, wells are being flowed and using as high as 3000 cu. ft. per bbl. of oil. The cost of compressing gas to 300 or 400 lb. varies from 3 c. to 5 c. per 1000 cu. ft. of free gas. This figure has been obtained from a number of sources and as a matter of fact is the basis of actual business transactions involving gas compression. The cost of lifting oil with compressed gas is thus determined.

A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure. All known bauxite deposits in China occur in its eastern half, and almost all of them are found in the Carboniferous and the Permian. They are of platform origin, but contain diaspore as the major ore mineral. There is only one known deposit composed of gibbsite. The most valuable deposits are sedimentary ones formed in local depressions on the edges of platforms during marine transgressions. They lie on Upper Cambrian or Middle Ordovician limestone that was weathered for a long period of geological time. Generally, Chinese bauxites are low in iron, and have a rather low alumina/silica ratio.

THE discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch ; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco,, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration. The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not. yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. At this time the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6:00. per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. The ores being of so low grade,† this could be accomplished only with large and economically running mills. To insure the greatest possible economy, the Father,& Smet mill * Up to December 31st, 1879; the de Smet mine had produced bullion of the value of $718,211.68 from 76,155 tons of ore, being an average value of $9.41 per ton. During the year ending December 31st, 1879, the mine produced 46,344 tons, which yielded $425,360.42, or $9.18 per ton. The total gross cost of working for the corresponding period, including deadwork, exchange, legal expenses, fete., wits $219,914.82. The yield of the mine for the year 1880 (Engineering and Mining Journal, February 5th, 1881), was $600,011, with total expenses of mining and milling, of $313,108. † The first 4083 tons extracted from the de Smet mine, were selected, yielding $62,783.97. The next 25,728 tons produced $230,067.24. The total 29,811 tons were weighed, and worked at custom mills. The yield of the first 409 tons from tine Golden Terra Mine was $11.44 per-ton.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IT is nearly three years since the metallurgy of the Homestake ore was discussed with considerable thoroughness, in a paper' read before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy. Certain changes have been made in this period which are perhaps of sufficient interest to justify a brief description, and it is chiefly with such details and miscellanies that this paper will deal. In the circumstances, a certain amount of repetition is inevitable, but matter treated of in the former paper will be referred to here only when it is necessary for the sake of coherency. For full descriptions of equipment and technique, the former paper should be consulted. The mineralized slates and schists which constitute the ore vary considerably in composition, but the unoxidized ore, perhaps constituting the major part of the reserves, contains either chlorite or hornblende (cummingtonite), with quartz, carbonates of lime, magnesia and iron, and arsenopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. Ferrous minerals predominate, and this fact has been an important factor in determining the metallurgical treatment. With one or two exceptions the minerals noted are of relatively high specific gravity, and the ore as a whole is exceptionally heavy, many determinations giving an average specific gravity of 3.00. This high specific gravity presents one decided advantage, when the' cost of treatment is compared with operations elsewhere, in that the ton, almost universally the basic unit, represents a volume probably less by 10 per cent. than that of many gold ores. On the other hand, this high gravity renders more difficult the discharge of pulp from mortars, its distribution on amalgam tables, and its transportation in launders.

CLEVENGER, Palo Alto, Cal.-Since the precipitation of extremely dilute solutions as regards cyanide presents one of the greatest problems of zinc-dust precipitation, I should like to ask Mr. Clark the minimum concentration in cyanide of the solution from which it is possible to precipitate satisfactorily the gold with zinc dust in Homestake practice. A. J. CLARK.-For a day's work about 0.015 per cent. That is precipitating a very low-grade solution, very low in alkalinity. It requires probably 0.2 lb. of zinc dust to the ton. JOHN A. FULTON, Melones, Cal.-At the Melones mine, we have been working very low-grade rock for a number of years, the process being amalgamation and concentration up to the last year. The value of the ore increased so that we had to supplement the concentration with a sand and slime plant. Classification was a problem, since to install classifiers would mean tearing the mill all to pieces. We are therefore making use of a Wilfley table for this purpose. (Wilkes-Barre Meeting, June, 1911.) AT a number of mines in eastern Nicaragua, 3.5- and 5-ft. Huntington mills are used for grinding gold-ore after a preliminary breaking in jaw-crushers. The smaller mills are made sectional to facilitate transportation to the more difficultly accessible mines. The capacity of the smaller mills is about 20 or 25 per cent. that of the larger, but in proportion to the quantity of ore ground they require more power and are subject to greater wear. The notes herein given are from records of the performance of the larger mills, but, in general, apply to the smaller also. THE NATURE OF THE ORE. The ore occurred as a series of flat veins in a highly-decomposed rock, probably alaskite. The primary mineralization comprised pyrite, pyrrhotite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and quartz; the oxidation-products of which were chiefly hydrated iron oxide or limonite, chrysocolla, azurite, and malachite. The kaolinization of the feldspar of the country resulted in the admixture of a great quantity of clay with the oxidized ore. The quartz was sandy, imbedded in the clay; and probably the greater part represented the residue from the crushed rock in the fissures after leaching, and kaolinization of the feldspar. There was little vein-quartz in the unaltered primary sulphide ore. Only the oxidized ore was mined for the gold that it contained in amounts that averaged $4 per ton. No specks of gold were ever seen in the ore, and the gold obtained by panning was always exceedingly fine. The amalgamation-bullion was about 800 fine in gold and 60 to 80 in silver. The ore delivered at the mill contained from 5 to 15 per cent. of moisture; during the rainy season the quantity was much greater. As with the slogans of Madison Avenue, catch words or phrases frequently become topical. Much is heard these days of the confrontation between governments of developing countries and international mining capital. In actual fact, sadly there are too few cases of anything as positive as confrontation because such an action at least signifies a dialogue which may begin badly but end up fruitfully. Instead we have in general a climate of indifference and fear with the mining companies of note marking off most of the developing world as being unsafe for investment. There is an unreal air to this damaging impasse. The common sense and objectivity which are prerequisites of positive action are lost in a swirling cloud of mythology, embraced largely by governments. Let us examine some of the dangerous misconceptions.

Notes on Iron Age copper-smelting technology in the Transvaal by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) Earlier reports on Iron Age copper metallurgy and copper-smelting techniques in the Transvaal are surveyed, and a description and tentative classification of the copper furnaces are given. The analyses of furnace slags and sherds of glazed crucibles from archaeological sites of the Transvaal and the neighbouring Orange Free State pro. vide evidence of copper smelting there in Iron Age times. . An investigation conducted by the Department of Archaeology of the University ofthe Witwatersrand provided information on the details of furnace construction and smelting processes, on the composition of the materials used and produced, and on the making and handling of tools and accessories, such as bellows and tongs, needed by Iron Age smelters. Three models (the KaondejVenda furnace, the Rooiberg crucible furnace, and the Uitkomst furnace) were constructed and operated as a demonstration of Iron Age copper smelting as it was practised in the Transvaal.

LAKE MARGARET is situate high up on the West Coast Range of Tasmania, and lies in a roughly triangular valley formed by the ridge of Mount Sedgwick on the south, the ridge formed by Mounts Geikie and Tyndal on the west, amid a ridge connecting Mounts Geikie and Sedgwick on the east. Any description of this hydroelectric installation, however brief, naturally divides itself into the following sections:1. STORAGE BASIN, &c. 2. DAM. 3. PIPE LINES. 4. POWER STATION. 5. TRANSMISSION LINES. 6. SUBSTATION 7. VARIOUS WORKS utilizing the power.The Storage Basin used is the natural lake itself, which has a maximum length of 110 chains, a maximum width of 40 chains, and a mean arelj. of 300 acres. The water-level of the lake, which has been maintained by a natural dam, is 2143 ft. above sea-level. The approximate catchment area at present appropriated is 7 sq. miles, and the rainfall, on the average, about 144 in. per annum. It is possible to increase this catchment area by suitable races, &c. Dam.-The dam constructed is of very small dimensions, and is not a storage dam in the usual sense of the term. The natural storage ot-the lake itself was used by means of a channel cut through the natural dam and thence to the mouth of the lake, the lake level being thus temporarily lowered while the outlet pipes, screens, &c., were placed in position, and the channel was then closed again with a concrete wall in which the pipes and screens are set. As papers are placed before you upon large gas-engines in Belgium and Germany, it was considered that some information should be given upon the same subject in Great Britain. I therefore agreed to compile these notes, which I have made very short in view of the somewhat full nature of the other papers presented to this meeting, and considering the complete nature of the many publications which have been made recently upon the subject of large gas-engines. I give below Tables I. to VI., showing the number and particulars of large gas-engines which have been built or are building by British makers, and in view of the growing size of gas-engines I have concluded that engines less than 500 h.p. cannot now be included in the category of large gas-engines, and therefore I have not considered engines under that power.

A FEW years ago, while the writers worked on the constitution of ternary and quaternary alloys consisting mainly of iron, chromium and silicon1,2 some information on microstructures and hardness, not incor-porated in the published work, was obtained. It has not been possible to do any further work on the properties of the alloys. The information possessed is hereby presented for the interest it. may have in connection with the constitution of the alloys.

In order to maintain an accurate survey underground, it is first necessary to connect all shafts used for the transferring of the survey to the levels below by a precise surface survey.This has been achieved at Mount Isa by a careful triangulation survey with stations adjacent to those shafts most suitably located for transferring the survey below.The precedure used is described herein.The Weisbach triangle commonly used is obtained by reading to swingirig wires, the theodolite being placed in line with them as nearly as is possible. The surveyor at the surface places the wires in the shaft as far apart as the size of the shaft will permit, with sufficient space between the wires and walls to ensure their swinging freely. The far wire is fixed in position, while the near one is movable by means of fine adjusting screws to facilitate its being brought into line with the fixed wire and the theodolite. When this is done the surveyor at the lower level is advised by pre-arranged signals and the survey can then commence.The surface portion of the survey is simple; all that is necessary being to read the angle from the backsight to the wires, measure their distance from the theodolite, and keep a check on them throughout the survey to make sure that no movement takes place.The lower portion of the survey is more difficult, the surveyor first qf all having to place his theodolite as nearly as possible in line with the wires.

The "V" system was first introduced by the West Virginia Coal & Coke Company at their No. 9 mine, Norton. Norton is a small mining village on the B. & 0. railway, about seven miles from the town of Elkins. This year, accompanied by G. D. MacDougall, I visited this mine to obtain first-hand information regarding this modem system and to determine its adaptability to conditions in Nova Scotia. The following is a brief account of my observations. The seam that is being worked is known as the Lower Kittaning, which, at this point, has an average thickness of 7 feet. This includes a band of hard clay varying in thickness from 8 to 14 inches, which occurs about 2 feet from the pavement, also 8 inches of inferior coal at the roof. The latter is not recovered, which leaves to be mined about 5 1/2 feet of clean coal. The roof is slate and shale for the first 30 feet, followed by 40 to 60 feet of sandstone; the total cover is from 80 to 250 feet thick. The seam lies very flat, with a dip of only 2 per cent., and, as the dip is toward the main entrance, it' is in favor of the load, also providing natural drainage for any water the mine makes. As the mine is not gassy, and there is no water to be pumped out, one can understand that mining conditions are practically ideal.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. Underground, 7 level (897 ft.) was the lowest producing level. Development on 8 (1073 ft.) and 9 (1247 ft.) levels consisted only of exploratory drives and crosscuts in the vicinity of the Davidson Shaft. The tops of the 650 and 750...

Mount Read is 'situated in the county of Montagu, on 'the west coast of Tasmania, about 20 miles inland from. Remine in an easterly direction, 15 miles northerly from Mount. Lyell, and 30 miles south-east from Mount Bischoff, and is one of the mountains forming the west coast range; it rises to a height of 3890 ft. above sea level.About eleven years ago the first mineral section was taken up on Mount Read by a Hobart company, known as the Mount Reid Silver Mining Company, consisting of 25,000 shares its holding consisted of one section of 80 acres, held under mineral lease. Prospecting was carried on for some months under great disadvantages, as all supplies had to be carried up the mount from Dundas, a distance of nine miles, on men's backs, until a pack track for horses was made.The track rises 2500 ft. in the first five miles, and then falls 200 ft. from that point to the mines, which are at an altitude of 3000 ft. above sea level, and at a point about two miles westward from the summit of the mountain, approximately midway between Mounts Read and Dundas.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. This subject of paramount importance in many modern plants employed in the extraction of gold from ores by cyanidation, involves several considerations.With the old-type "slimes decantation" process, using several tanks of large dimension, installed at high capital cost, it was frequently possible to obtain good settlement over a protracted period, but the disability of indifferent response to subsequent filtration and washing of the residual pulp, after decantation of the supernatant pregnant solution, was often present.In modern cyanidation practice, the tendency is to reduce capital expenditure by continuous processing of the ore pulp in a plant of less volume, but capable of handling more tonnage through-put and yielding, coincidently, less residual dissolved gold in the final pulp residues.INHIBITORY FACTORS.These involve a study of the effect of the circuit water or solution employed in milling and treatment, the amount of "primary" slime occurring in the ore broken underground, the constitution of the "walls" underground, the inherent occurrence of colloidal slime in partially decomposed ore, and the presence of kaolinised and ferruginous clayey structures carrying payable infiltrations of gold values, to mention some of the troubles encountered in practice.
