The rate of face advance in the gold mines is between 3 and 10 m a month, with a median value of about 5 m a month; it follows that faces are blasted less frequently than is planned. There are many advantages in the use of short holes for stoping to give face advances of from 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast. This has the potential for so increasing the frequency of blasting that monthly rates of face advance could be improved significantly. Cleaning with face scrapers is too slow to permit the maximum achievement of a complete clean, drill, and blast cycle for each shift. Short-hole blasting, combined with the use of mechanical conveyors for face cleaning, offers the possibility of completing two such cycles each day, yielding monthly rates of face advance of up to 35 m. Experiments aimed at developing safe, unitized explosive charges well-suited to produce reliable face advances of 0,7 to 0,8 m per blast under a wide range of gold-mining conditions have been notably successful. A novel method of assessing the effectiveness of a blast based on the percentage of holes that leave socket lengths of 5 cm or less was used. Unitized charges of 60 per cent Ammon gelignite, 600 mm long by 25 mm in diameter, appear to be near optimal. The explosive is de-sensitized to obviate detonation by chance mechanical impact, but requires only a 6D detonator for initiation; it has good water-resistance. Means have been developed for producing these cartridges automatically, but the necessary machines will have to be built specially and the cartridges are not yet available in large numbers. A second experiment by way of an extended pilot production trial using these cartridges in holes 0,9 m long is now under way. Preliminary results indicate that drilling and explosive efficiencies and productivity are well above average, even though face scraping is being used. Unitized charges of this type are likely to prove even more advantageous when mechanical face conveyors come into use.

Initial glory holing was followed by sublevel stoping, with a small proportion of total production mined by shrink and cut-and-fill methods.The sublevel stoping method was successfully modified to cater for altering ground conditions encountered at increasing depths. At present, 94 per cent of production comes from sublevel stopes. The evolution of this mining method and current techniques and practices is outlined. A combined shrink and,sublevel benching method was also developed to increase the mining rate of narrow orebodies over the standard stoping lift of 380 ft. Pillar recovery and stope filling operations have been continuously modified to suit the relIuirements of a rapidly developing mine.INTRODUCTIONOre production commenced at Mount Isa Mines in June 1931. During the past few years the combination of continuous billet casting with in-line reduction has been studied and several machines have been built with this capability included in the design parameters. (1,2,3,4,5) In-line reduction and continuous casting in combination are obvious and attractive. As pinch rolls are already in place for the continuous casting operation, it can be readily seen that a redesign of the mechanical and electrical equipment of the pinch rolls is all that is necessary to have in-line rolling. There have been numerous in-line reduction experiments conducted by simply increasing the pinch roll pressure on existing machines. (6,7,8,9) These generally failed to produce quality billets and often resulted in internal metallurgical defects (Figure 1).

IN this country steel made in a Siemens furnace or Bessemer converter, is generally tapped into a ladle or shoe, and then drawn through an aperture in its base into the various moulds. In order to regulate the flow of the molten mass a refractory valve is arranged at the aperture. A plumbago nozzle is fixed firmly in this aperture, and a stopper of like material is fitted to it, making a socket valve. In order to raise and depress this stopper at will, a rod is fastened-to it, extending through, the metal and over the brim of the ladle, where it is bent back in a half circle and secured in a slide. This slide plays vertically in a frame, permanently fastened to the outside of the ladle, and is moved by a lever having as a fulcrum a pin fixed in this frame, one end, of the lever being temporarily fixed to the slide, and the other end being moved by hand. Reference being had to the drawing (see Plate 1, Fig. 1), E is the nozzle, D is the stopper, A is the rod, protected as hereinafter described, C is the cast-iron framework, B is the wrought-iron slide, B' is the offset into which the rod, A, enters, and is secured in the usual manner by a key, a. Section J, K, shows the manner of hanging the lever. J is a pin attached to the slide by which the end of the lever raises the slide, B. J is the fulcrum fastened to the frame, C. K (Fig. 1) is a hand-nut fastening the slide, B, to the frame, C, at will. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of ladle, showing the outside working of the parts above described. It is the common practice to protect the rod, A, by a coating of clay and fire-sand, kneaded to the right consistency and applied to the rod, and then thoroughly dried. Just before casting, the plumbago stopper, D, is heated at its extremity to redness separate from the ladle and, at the moment of pouring, is placed in the ladle and slide, and adjusted as well as practicable. Some very serious defects ensue, causing much trouble and vexation as well as actual loss. The fire-clay coating in drying becomes cracked and seamy, and at its best is more or less loose on the rod. Since the introduction of water cooled test rings the operation of cupelling retort bullion has not alone been sImplified, but has also been the means of concentrating the bullion for the fining test in a much shorter time.The first water cooled test ring which I used was rectangular in shape, inside dimensions 5 ft. 3 in. x 2 ft. IQ in., and made of i in. mild steel plates, with a water space of 9i in. x 3t in. However, it was found that as soon as the filling commenced to wear and the litharge came in contact with the jacket, the plate was gradually affected on the lines of the wash, caused by the blast. After a while the inside steel plate went beyond the factor of safety, and was then substituted on the sides and the front of the test ring by a tin copper plate, which has stood now for the last five years without showing the least signs of wear or leakage.The test remains in use as long as the bottom is regarded as safe, and toward the end of the life of the test the litharge is allowed to work against the copper plate.

Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

The Potrerillos Smelter commissioned a new El Teniente converter in 1985. As a result of the use of this technology, the Peirce-Smith converters have been processing only high grade matte or white metal. These operational changes resulted in damages to the converter shells, excessive splashing and cold dope generation and very short refractory campaigns. The paper shows the modifications to the tuyere angle, mouth design changes and new techniques for mouth cleaning and gas handling. Operational results up to 1991 are also shown.

The feed preparation section of the Whyalla iron ore pellet plant includes a screening and crushing plant followed by dry grinding mills. Improvements in the efficiency of the vibrating screen and cone crusher have enabled screening plant throughput to be increased and product size to be decreased. This, in turn, has enabled improvements in the grinding mills' operation.

The Gekko InLine Pressure Jig (IPJ) was unleashed on the World gravity separation market in 1996 and has since sold over 150 units in applications including tin, diamonds, silver, coal, garnet and gold. During the past twelve years the knowledgebase of the best applications and capabilities of the IPJ has greatly increased. Improvements to the original IPJ design have included engineered ceramic ragging in specific gravities from 1.6 to 5.0, full automation and improved designs of feed presentation and tailings and concentrate handling systems. The IPJ has been found to be able to handle a wide feed size range and recover mineral at liberation size without significant addition of water to the mass balance. Test work carried out during full-scale operation of the IPJ has shown the IPJ can recover diamonds down to 0.5 mm, sulfides down to 0.3 mm and gold down to 0.1 mm which greatly expands its application in the mineral processing industry. A significant volume of data now supports the symbiotic benefits of an IPJ and flotation circuit combination to pre-concentrate an ore and minimise downstream processing requirements.

IMMSA operates a conventional roasting-leaching-purification-electrolysis plant for the production of zinc from concentrates in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The leaching circuit was designed to take into consideration a feed mixture to the roaster with a maximum iron content of 7%. Since the start-up of the plant in 1982, the zinc recovery increased to 94.5%. However, an increase in the iron content in 1997 caused an important decrease in the global zinc recovery. Two new steps were added to the leaching circuit and modifications were made to the other steps in order to increase zinc extraction. Two new automated press filters were installed to replace the original vacuum drum filters and to minimize soluble zinc losses. Additionally, the residue treatment steps in purification were modified and a calcium removal circuit is just starting operation. These actions, besides improving the operations, have as the main objective to increase the global zinc recovery to levels above 94.5%.

A Discussion of the Paper of David Baker, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. (Washington Meeting, May, 1905.) MR. JOHN J. PORTER, Chicago Ill. (communication to the Secretary*) :-Mr. Baker's account of his experiences with stock-distribution has been particularly interesting to me, as it confirms the opinions which I had formed concerning the rapid failure of linings in several furnaces that have recently come to my notice. These furnaces, four -in number, are of modern construction, having been built or remodeled within the past two years, and are equipped with a well-known type of skip-hoist and double-bell charging-apparatus. In every case, a hot spot has developed within a few months after blowing-in, which has already compelled relining in two cases, and the probabilities are strongly against a long campaign in the other two. Since the hot spot in each case appeared in a position approximately opposite to the skip-hoist, and since the sizing, mentioned by Mr. Baker, is very apparent, it would seem as though there could be no doubt concerning the cause of the trouble. Nevertheless, there are some who cannot see it in that light; for the managers of two of these plants, at least, do not admit the existence of bad distribution, and have satisfied themselves by putting in cooling-plates, thickening the lining of the in-wall, and changing the brand of the fire-brick used for the construction of the walls. From observations of the clumping-action of the skip-hoist, and from subsequent inspection of the stock-distribution in the furnace itself, I arrived at the conclusion, some time ago, that no system of filling could be perfectly satisfactory where the stock is dumped into the hopper from one side, also that some

FLSmidth-Summit Valley Technologies has been a leader in gold processing equipment for nearly two decades. Over the past several years an extensive research and development effort has led to improvements in Mercury Abatement systems and process efficiency in Adsorption Desorption and Regeneration (ADR) or "Carbon" plant operations. Two technologies will be discussed that are focused on efficiency improvements followed by an explanation of Mercury Abatement systems. Gold and silver can be desorbed from carbon in several ways. FLSmidth has made significant improvements to the Pressure ZADRA process allowing for lower energy consumption and lower capital costs. This patented process is known as the Split-ZADRA Strip method. Split-ZADRA allows a plant to elute loaded carbon in a semi-continuous fashion. This increases the grade of the Pregnant Strip Solution, improves electrowinning efficiency, reduces capital equipment costs, and reduces energy requirements. During desorption and electrowinning for the Pressure ZADRA process, the pressure and temperature of the circulating strip solution is changed multiple times. A self-contained heating and cooling system has been developed which decreases the energy requirements for elution. Mercury Abatement technology has become increasingly important in recent years. Along with FLSmidth Summit Valley Technologies' complete Mercury Retorting Systems, FLS-SVT has developed systems for the capture and removal of mercury from electrowinning cell and strip solution exhaust, Carbon Regeneration exhaust, and the dore furnace exhaust. This paper describes each of the technologies introduced above and their success in operational gold and silver mines. Attempts were made to beneficiate low-grade ores by gravity concentration and flotation; mechanical furnaces began to replace the Scott furnace and the vertical coarse-ore furnaces, and condensers of sewer tile and redwood tanks were used in place of the older brick and stone condensing chambers. Other developments that have occurred during the current period of quicksilver, activity are mainly in the nature of improvement and further refinement of those started during the war period. Each period of quicksilver activity has been accompanied by the proposal of various new processes, including wet methods for the treatment of quicksilver ores and innovations in furnaces, retorts and condenser equipment. As far as the author knows, nothing of economic significance in the way of "new processes" has been developed. There is in fact no real need for any essentially new process for the treatment of quicksilver ores; the direct furnace treatment is simple and inexpensive. Moreover, with fare exceptions, the quicksilver industry has no complex or refractory ore problems corresponding to those which are receiving more and more attention from metallurgists in other branches of the nonferrous field. Under these conditions improvements in quicksilver metallurgy must be looked for through the adaptation of current developments in engineering and metallurgy generally to the particular needs of quicksilver practice rather than through the invention of new processes.

The copper refinery of Atlantic Copper was modernised and converted to the Isa permanent cathode system in 1995. The technology installed has proved to be an excellent platform for the development of operational improvements. During the years it has been working, the progressive assimilation of the new technology has been achieved and the level of operator knowledge has allowed design production to be reached and surpassed by more than 10%. At the same time, modifications to the work programmes, using existing equipment, have permitted the incorporation of new cells and the achievement of annual production levels of 250,000 tonnes and a productivity of 0.43 t/man-hour.

In 1972, the tankhouse of the Tamano Smelter adopted a high current density electrolysis operation applying the PRC (Periodic Reverse Current) method. In 1994, the phase four production expansion project, which incorporated significant re-structuring of the organization, was completed and we have achieved an annual production capacity of 191,000 tons. The target of this project, the production capacity, was increased by 1'8% and labor productivity by 25%. After the expansion, some improvements in the starting sheet section and the verticality of the electrodes were carried out, and the efficiency of the operation was greatly enhanced, including the improvement of the quality of the electrolytic copper.

The safety culture in mining has progressed towards a zero tolerance of injury. This change has required that some historically inherent risks of mining are engineered out or reduced. One of the significant causes of fatality in Western Australia and Worldwide mining is through rock fall, subsidence and inrush. Efforts put into understanding the material properties of the ground we mine and the backfill we place are reflected in improved safety statistics. It is no longer acceptable to not manage these risks and mining, to be sustainable, has to be safe.   Mining historically produced waste products with little consideration of recycling or impact on the surrounding land. The rehabilitation of mining waste products such as mill tailings, heap leach and waste rock is one step towards managing the environmental impact of these waste products. A better step is towards recycling and redepositing these products to produce a more environmentally sustainable mine site.   Gold fields St Ives lease is an active network of new and historic undergrounds and open pits within the Lake Lefroy and Kambalda district. The process of creating voids underground followed by open pits mining through the old voids allows the use of backfilling to control inherent hazards and dilution. Backfill provides opportunity for the disposal and recycling of mining waste materials at the same time as meeting requirements of mine support. Materials available on the St Ives site include spent heap leach, reclaimed tailings and waste mullock. Through recycling and re-depositing these materials to St Ives and neighbouring mines, the reliance on imported material to meet their needs and impact on surrounding land is reduced.   At St Ives, paste fill and barricade design have been reworked to allow backfilling into stopes with water inflows up to six litres per second. This has required a rethink of the drainage and monitoring of water management systems previously used for hydraulic fill and apply them to paste.   The St Ives open pits have developed methods to mine through underground workings and individual stope voids up to 62,000m3. Here backfill is used to reduce the consequence of catastrophic, unexpected failure of the crown and minimise ore lost down voids and dilution through increased blast movement. This paper outlines the less common methods being adopted to use the recycled materials and ways it has been managed to suit the needs of the company.

As. part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.1 Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in. more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equip-ment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel sam-ples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collect-ing the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative determination.
