The Western Australian gold industry has approximately 100 operating plants, mainly CIP/CIL. The nature of the State's rapidly expanding gold industry gave rise to concerns over management of the cyanide hazard, in that most plants are remote from major population centres, have a workforce with a high turn over and use highly saline process water. Approximately 4,500 workers in the industry have the potential to be exposed to cyanide in the course of their normal work.This paper outlines the risk management strategy developed by Government and industry to monitor atmospheric HCN gas in the work environment and the role of continuing education and training along with regular site inspections by Department of Mines Inspectors.

Gold plant performance during the start-up period, which extends until capacity production is sustained, has a major impact on the internal rate of return and the net present value of gold projects regardless of mining and processing configurations. The start-up period experiences substandard production, extra expenses, and sometimes reduced recovery. This results in lost profits, a portion of which are recouped at the end of the life of the mine. Poor start-up performance can put projects into financial jeopardy. The gold mining industry regularly experiences start-ups ranging from good to poor. Problem areas, which affect start-up performance, include shortcomings in ore reserve sampling and testing, equipment design and installation, untrained plant operators, inability to cope with problems which arise, and organization of the maintenance program. An investment, equal to 0.5% to 1.0% of plant capital cost, in programs to prepare for start-up, in advance, is recommended. Investment in such a program will make a good start-up possible. Without it the best result which can normally be expected is a fair start-up. Developers of new gold mines are urged to compare the cost of this investment with the anticipated increase in project net present value. Funds for this investment should be included in feasibility studies.

"By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. This article focuses on TurkeyÆs gold potential with respect to exploration, development and operation after 1985. Apart from TurkeyÆs geology, which offers a substantial number of volcanic-associated gold (Ag) and gold-copper (Au-Cu) projects, there are numerous other factors which make the country a favourable place for mining. Turkey has a mining history which goes back to pre-Roman times and an excellent mining code which ensures security for long-term production. In the country, the Government and local villagers are very positive and the country works extremely well logistically with excellent road and telecommunication links. The opportunities for new discoveries in Turkey are very high. Moreover, Turkey has its eyes turned west as it moves towards joining the European Community and it is no surprise that international companies believe it has got its timing as well as its partner relationship right. Newmont, Teck Cominco, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Eldorado Gold, etc all have direct or indirect interests in Turkey, as do an increasing number of midtier and junior exploration companies. Turkish Koza Gold Mining is the first Au producing company of Turkey. The Eldorado Gold owned 245 t Kisladag Au deposit in Western Turkey is currently also producing Au. In the meantime Anatolia Minerals Development is advancing the 131 t resource at the C÷pler Au deposit in North Eastern Turkey. These are significant world-class deposits. Further encouragement for investment in the Au mining sector has been provided by the introduction of a new mining law in 1985. Foreign investments in the country were encouraged and have seen a rapid increase in the last two decades. Gross domestic product (GDP) growth is in excess of five per cent per annum, inflation is down from 70 per cent to single figures, the budget deficit has been cut by 40 per cent to 11 per cent and industrial output and productivity are increasing rapidly. Turkey is politically and economically stable, is a member of the European Customs Union, has a supportive mining legislation, is highly prospective and under-explored and hosts significant recent gold discoveries.

High temperature pressure oxidation (>190°C) is a wellrecognized and versatile metallurgical oxidative pre-treatment process commonly used to liberate gold from refractory sulfide ores and concentrates. The pressure oxidation of refractory gold ores was first commercially applied in 1985, at Homestake Mining Company’s McLaughlin mine in the United States. Since that time numerous refractory gold and other high temperature pressure oxidation facilities have been built throughout the world. The design of each facility was met with unique challenges and opportunities which have led to an array of plant configurations, pressure oxidation autoclave sizes, and sulfide oxidation capacities. This paper presents a historical review of high temperature pressure oxidation operations and current projects in execution with a focus on the autoclave vessel design, circuit configuration, and unit sulfide oxidation capacity as a basis for characterization and comparison.

My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

Based on the mode of occurrence, gold is classified into three categories: microscopic gold, submicroscopic gold and surface-bound gold. Microscopic gold, or visible gold, refers to gold minerals in which Au occurs in a substantial amount, such as native gold and electrum. Submicroscopic gold, ie invisible gold, refers to gold contained in the structure of other minerals (mainly sulfides) in minor to trace amounts. Surface gold is the gold that was adsorbed onto the surface of other minerals during mineralisation and subsequent oxidation or metallurgical processing. Gold mineralogy has a significant impact on its extractive metallurgy. Gold process mineralogy helps address problems related to gold ore processing. It is widely used as a predictive and troubleshooting tool in gold ore processing, and provides useful information on process selection, flow sheet development, recovery improvement and reagent consumption optimisation. This paper will begin with the classification of gold ores, and will focus on gold mineralogy and how it impacts extractive metallurgy through case studies.

The 1989 Annual Meeting and Exhibit of SME in Las Vegas, NV, February 27 - March 2, 1989, was the largest ever, drawing more than 4000 regis¬trants and 240 exhibit booths. Technical sessions included presentation of nearly 500 papers, including symposia on Biotechnology in Minerals and Metals Processing, Surplus Capacity in the International Metals Industry, and APCOM `89 - the 21st International Symposium on Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. Technical sessions covered the gamut of minerals industry interests; however, the proximity of the meeting to recently surging gold development in Nevada drew special attention to gold operating practices. Several of the papers on gold processing are reviewed below. To keep pace with the strong world- wide interest in gold development, SME has scheduled three additional upcoming programs that will focus specifically on gold: World Gold '89 - Gold Forum on Technology and Practices will be held November 5 - 8, 1989 in Reno, NV, as a joint meeting and exhibit between SME and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Technical sessions will encompass a full program of papers covering geology and exploration, mining, and mineral and metallurgical processing. Cooperating sponsors for this meeting include the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM, The Institute of Metals, The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India, and The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Gold '90 - Salt Lake City, UT, February 26 - March 1, 1990, will be a symposium held in conjunction with the 1990 SME Annual Meeting. Current research on the processing of refractory gold ores will generate innovative papers on process mineralogy at this symposium, with special emphasis on gold with pyrite and gold with carbon. Other sessions are planned for gold exploration and mining, gold metallurgy, gold plant design and practice, and gold in scams. Advances in Gold and Silver Processing Conference, October 1 - 3, 1990 will be held in Reno, NV. Preliminary planning calls for technical sessions on heap leaching practice, refractory ore processing, non-traditional lixiviants, bioleaching, metal recovery from solution, and the environmental aspects of processing operations. PLANT DESIGN, OPERATION Technical sessions organized by the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division of SME at this year's meeting in Las Vegas covered a wide range of gold operating practices. Eight papers relating to gold plant design, operation, and equipment are summarized here. Preprints of these papers are available by writing to Publications Sales, PO Box 625002, Littleton, CO 80162-5002 ($2.50 per paper for AIME members, $4 for nonmembers). Continuous elution process A. M. Stone, of Bechtel Australia Pty. Ltd., described the "Development of the Continuous Elution Process for Extraction of Gold from Carbon" (pre-print 89-75). Developed by Bechtel Pacific Corp. for Ok Tedi Mining Ltd., the Continuous Elution Process uses the same reagents as batch processes for elution of gold from carbon, while yielding significant savings in stripping vessel size and energy consumed in comparison with equivalent batch processes. The process is also simpler to operate than batch processes. Other advantages include reduced maintenance costs, higher average eluate grade, and near steady final eluate grade. Highly saline process water has a number of implications for the CIP process during the leaching, adsorption and recovery of gold. The reduced oxygen solubility in saline water can seriously reduce the rate of gold leaching, while dissolved oxygen meters do not necessarily reveal actual oxygen concentrations in saline water. High levels of magnesium in the ground water necessitate operation at lower pH (-9), with the potential for greater cyanide loss via HCN stripping. In addition increasing salinity renders viscosity modifiers largely ineffective.The adsorption capacity of aurocyanide onto activated carbon is improved with increasing salinity, but misleading results can be obtained in assessment of gold loading kinetics of plant carbon samples already loaded, or partially loaded, in saline water if subsequently tested in fresh water. Elevated chloride levels in the Zadra elution process can cause severe anode corrosion in the elecuowinning cell. The Anglo elution process is tolerant to only slight increases in water salinity, but elution times can be reduced by ethanol addition. Care is required in carbon regeneration, as salts can catalyse carbon decomposition as well as increase kiln corrosion.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. "The Superior Province of the Canadian Shield is the largest gold producing area within Archean greenstone rocks in the world, with total production of over 140 million ounces of gold. One hundred and fifty-five mines have individually produced more than 8,000 ounces, although only a relatively limited number of deposits (33) produced more than one million ounces of gold. The output from these 33 deposits accounts, however, for 85% of total gold production. The majority of grades (68%) ranges between 0.10 and 0.30 ounce per ton, and there is no linear relationship between grade and tonnage.Development of new gold mines reflects the history of gold prices. However, the response to the latest increase in gold prices was not as marked. It is concluded that gold deposits are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and new exploration techniques are urgently required.IntroductionWith most of its production coming out of the Superior Province, the Canadian Shield is the largest producer of gold from Archean greenstone rock s in the world. The paper describes a spreadsheet system that enables selection of projects and companies that meet the user's corporate exploration and/or acquisition philosophy. A regularly maintained commercially available database has been used as the basis for this system. It provides an easily accessible efficient com- prehensive search method. The technique enables ranking by various criteria, both technical and financial, to provide groups of projects/companies that are of interest. Initially, target size parameters such as reserves, production and mine life are applied together with geological criteria such as age and deposit type; the significance of the targets in the context of the Australian gold industry is addressed.

Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it's Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. This work presents experimental results for the recovery of gold present in alkaline cyanide solutions by using the electroelution technique of strong-base anionic polymeric resins IRA 402-CL from Rhom and Haas-Brazil Ltd. loaded with gold. This technique of electroelution of anionic polymeric resins is based on the removal of metal ions adsorbed to the resin, resulting from a potential difference applied between the cathode and anode in an electrolytic cell. The electrolytic cell was composed of an aqueous solution with suitable chemical characteristics and an anionic polymeric resin bed loaded with gold. The resin used in the experiments was loaded using synthetic alkaline gold cyanide solution with 1.0 g/L of gold. The variables studied were electroelution time, cathode current density, distance between cathode and anode and the electrolyte chemical composition. Statistical methods made it possible to establish the optimum conditions that would achieve satisfactory gold recoveries by the electroelution technique. The statistically predicted response for the resin loaded with gold by percolation was 16.5% gold recovery, 2.0 A/m2 cathode current density, 20-mm distance between electrodes and 6.0 hrs electroelution time. For the centrifuging system, the statistically predicted response was 7.41% gold recovery under the following conditions: 0.25 A/m2 cathode current density, 1-mm distance between electrodes, 3.5 hrs electroelution time and 10.9% NaOH in the electrolyte chemical composition.

Recent research efforts have shown have shown selective solvation extraction of a gold cyanide ion-pair complex from alkaline cyanide solution is possible with organic phosphorus esters. These alkyl phosphorus esters such as tributyl phosphate (TBP) and di-n-butyl n-butyl phosphonate (DBBP) can selectively load gold to rather high levels, even in excess of 30 gpl. However, traditional stripping techniques are not particularly effective. In this regard, gold recovery by direct electrolysis of the organic phase has been found to be an interesting possibility. Further, the rate of direct electrodeposition from the organic phase can be improved significantly by using an aqueous/organic mixture. Direct electrodeposition of sheet gold from loaded DBBP was successfully accomplished at a current density of 8x10 4 amp/cm2 and 55°C from such a two-phase mixture with the aqueous phase as the continuous phase. No appreciable degradation the DBBP was found after 5 cycles of extraction and, electrodeposition. Finally, the applicability of the process strategy for an industrial situation was demonstrated by the successful treatment of waste gold cyanide electroplating solutions.

Many in the environmental movement have focused on this element. But, nothing they or anyone does will change the amount of arsenic in the world. This report is on actual commercial plants that we developed and operated to recover or stabilize arsenic values from metallurgical dusts from gold and copper pyro operations and arsenical gold bearing ores. When they were available gold and copper values were recovered. Our experience in arsenic extends over thirty years. My first corporation, Mineral Research & Development Corporation was the first in North America to manufacture the then new CCA (copper-chrome-arsenic) wood preservatives. This class of wood preservatives proved to be so effective that it made wood into an entirely new material of construction. It is not uncommon for wood properly treated with arsenical CCA preservatives to last for thirty; forty, and sixty years. Over a hundred years have been projected in some field tests. Hundreds of thousands of trees have been saved. Millions more trees would have been saved had environmentalists not decided that their arsenic phobia was more important than trees. There are several variations of CCA. The most popular is CCA-C. Its formula is: CrO3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 47.5% CuO . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 18.5% As2O5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34.0% Until recent restrictions were placed on the consumption of arsenical wood preservatives, annual consumption in North America was about 150,000,000 lbs./yr. About 64,500,000 of arsenic as the pentoxide was safely consumed this way. World CCA consumption has been about double the above figures or 300,000,000 lbs. as 100% CCA and 129,000,000 lbs/yr as As2O5. Close to 100% of all the arsenic used in wood preservatives is derived from gold or copper processing. The valence of arsenic required for CCA wood preservatives and many other markets is the same valence that is required for stabilization. The economic challenge is how to get there. We have built and operated eleven plants to oxidize arsenic trioxide to its pentavalent form. Most of these have been classic in that they used a common oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or nitric acid to achieve this.

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation's Thunder Mountain project in Valley County, Idaho, is one of the most remote active mining operations in the US. High altitude, heavy snows, and proximity to wilderness complicate operations in this environmentally sensitive area. Mining is conducted by conventional open pit techniques while processing utilizes on-off heap leaching and Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation. The project is one of a few similar operations which detoxify the leached ore prior to its removal from the leach pads. Both leaching and neutralizing ( detoxifying) circuits are closed and independent loops. After leaching, alkaline chlorine solutions destroy residual cyanide in the heaps. Calcium hypochlorite solution for the cyanide destruction is prepared by injecting chlorine gas into milk of lime solution.
