The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.

An highly active absorbent with oxidization based on fly ash, lime and additives was prepared. Experiments of simultaneous desulphurization and denitrification were carried out using fixture bed and duct injection. The influential factors for the absorptive capacity of the absorbent were studied. The absorptive capacities of 120.7mg for SO2 and 43.7 mg for NOx were achieved at a Ca/(S + N) molar ratio 1.2, respectively, corresponding removal efficiencies of 87% and 76%, while spent absorbent appeared in the form of dry powder. The optimal temperature and humidity of flue gas treated with this process were shown to be approximately 50\\176 and 5% respectively. The mechanism of removal for SO2 and NOx was investigated. In comparison with traditional dry FGD, this process appears to have lower cost, less complicated configuration and simpler disposal of used absorbent. The valuable references can be provided for industrial application by this process. The foreground of application will be vast in China and in the world.

The aim of this paper is to study the scientificity and reliability of three coal gas indices used to predict coal fire disasters, namely Graham?s ratio, CO/CO2 ratio, Litton ratio and their different characteristics and service conditions. Data from a programmed temperature experiment were applied to check their veracity and accuracy. Each index performed well in detecting the level of a fire. We conclude that it is better to redefine the definition through experimentation before applying a given index. Integrated analysis of the results can provide reliable reference data for predicting spontaneous combustion of coal.

Copper smelter slag was leached using sulphuric acid solutions under atmospheric conditions. Base on the composition and phase of copper slag, the effect of the concentration of sulfuric acid and leaching temperature to the leaching growth rate of Fe, Cu, Co and Ni in the copper slag were investigated in this paper. Simultaneously, the influence of sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time, leaching temperature and the amount of sulfuric acid (solid-liquid ratio) to the leaching rate of these metal elements were researched. Experimental results showed that: with the increasing temperature, the dissolution rates of the metals elements increased first and then decreased. Due to the influence of silica gel which was obtained in beginning of leaching, the higher the concentration of sulfuric acid is not conducive to dissolution of the valuable metal elements. The dissolution degree of Fe, Cu, Co and Ni were 92.83% 96.76% 93.62% and 63.41% respectively.

"Using the methods of electron microscopy and IR spectroscopy, mineral components in the run-of-mine kimberlites and on the surface of diamonds were identified. The mechanism and sequence of mineral formation on the surface of diamond crystals were established. Systematization and classification thereof were undertaken for the first time ever.INTRODUCTION The high content of diamonds sized -5 mm in the kimberlite ores of Western Yakutia determines their processing depth in the size class 0.5 mm and finer [1, 2]. These diamonds are recovered by grease and froth separation based on the natural hydrophobic properties of the crystals. When refractory altered kimberlite ores are fed into the industrial process, the performance of grease and froth separation of the diamond ore greatly deteriorates. [4, 10, 15, 17]. Altered kimberlites are known to contain up to 90% of secondary minerals. This reduces by up to 40% the recovery of diamonds by grease and froth separation. [6].Diamond crystals from the grease and froth separation tailings were investigated. On the surface of the examined diamonds, hydrophilic mineral formations were identified, responsible for reduced recovery by physicochemical separation methods [3, 12, 18]. The aim of this study was to identify and describe the relationship between the composition of kimberlite ores and mineral formations on the surface of diamond crystals in order to systematize, classify, and then develop methods of removal in grease and froth separation processes. Though the extraction of copper is well established, generation of sulfur dioxide (S02) is still a troublesome issue. Conventional processes are further challenged by the increasing amount of impurities in the concentrates. Direct decomposition of the metal sulfides into the metal(s) and elemental sulfur under concentrated solar radiation offers a promising path to solve both problems. Thermogravimetric measurements under inert atmospheres have shown that synthetic chalcocite or chalcopyrite yield copper at temperatures as low as 1773 K. Even though optimum reaction temperatures might be somewhat higher, such temperatures are straightforwardly accessible in solar chemical reactors. The absence of oxygen will reduce the extent of slag forming reactions and thereby alter the evaporation characteristics of volatile impurities such as arsenic or antimony. Chemical equilibrium calculations for a chalcopyrite-enargite feed, e.g., have shown that under inert atmospheres arsenic compounds are completely evaporated at temperatures above 1000 K and an effective separation of arsenic from the matte is expected. An important step towards a solar production of copper is the design and testing of prototype solar chemical reactors for this reaction. Numerical modeling is a key tool supporting a rational design but it requires data of the high-temperature properties that prevail in these processes. Development of techniques for determining the essential quantities such as decomposition rates or radiative properties at temperatures up to 2000 K is therefore a main activity in our laboratory in order to control and optimize the process. Though developed in the frame of high-temperature solar technology, the experimental techniques are also suited to advance the understanding of conventional high-temperature processes. There are four large limestone quarries, located nearby Cairo metropolitan. Drilling and blasting operations are used to extract limestone for the cement industries. In these quarries, the blast vibration should be kept below a certain limit. One of these quarries is Tourah Portland Cement Company (TPCC) limestone quarry which, lies near important and historical large caves, within Tourah Mountain. Therefore, control of blast vibration level becomes very critical.

"A thermodynamic study of the equilibrium phase assemblage AgBi3S5-Bi2S3-S was made by an EMF-technique, using the RbAg4l5 solid electrolyte. The ternary phase was synthesized from the pure Ag2S and Bi2S3 in an evacuated silica ampoule and grinded into powder and mixed with appropriate compositions of B12S3 and S, in a series of experiments, for pressing in to pellets. The pellets were assembled to form the galvanic cells Pt (-) | Ag ] RbAg4ls | AgBi3S5+ Bi2S3 + S + (C) I Pt (+). The EMF-measurements were made in the temperature range 299 - 460 K.In this paper, thermodynamic functions of the ternary phase AgBi3S5 (pavonite) have been determined. The agreement between the obtained results and the literature values were established.IntroductionThe complex group of ore minerals constitutes from trace amounts to a major proportions of sulfosalts. Although the sulfosalts rarely form massive ore bodies, they are commonly associated with rich sulfide ore minerals for the base and precious metals and widely distributed in a metal poor sulfide minerals [1]. For instance, Ag-bearing sulfosalts are encountered in ore minerals for the production of the base metals and are common sources of silver. Nevertheless, thermodynamic properties of the sulfosalts are poorly known.Reliable thermochemical data are essential for quantitative modeling of the chemical behavior of the sulfosalts in equilibrium with sulfides, which in turn would promote the optimization of complex minerals treatment and extractive metallurgy of the valuable metals."

In this paper, the standard thermodynamic properties of Ag3Sb and Ag6Sb intermetallic compounds have been studied by the solid state EMF-method, using Ag+ ion conducting β- alumina and AgI. The intermetallic compounds were synthesized from pure substances in evacuated silica ampoules and their formation were confirmed by the SEM-EDS analyses. The EMF measurements were made on electrochemical cells of the type [Ag | β-alumina | Ag-Sb] and [Ag | AgI | Ag-Sb]. The usage of β-alumina electrolyte, in this study, enabled thermodynamic measurements of the Ag-Sb-intermetallic compounds above 710 K, hitherto unreported. Based on the new experimental data, thermodynamic properties of the Ag-Sb-intermetallic compounds have been determined. The obtained experimental values have been compared with the available literature data.

Despite the widespread use of DEM to simulate particle processes, comparatively little work has been done to evaluate its accuracy. One of the reasons is a lack of available measurement techniques that can capture dynamic information at the momentum transfer timescale which is lower than 10-6 s - typical of the kinetics occurring within the drum. This work makes use of Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT), an in-situ method capable of measuring 3D kinematic data at 1000 frames per second. PEPT measurements are performed using 3 mm and 5 mm mono-size glass beads in a 300 mm diameter rotating drum at critical speeds that are relevant to industry. We undertake systematic ‘tuning’ of DEM with a view to optimising the agreement between experiment and simulation. To ensure an equitable comparison scale, both the DEM and PEPT data are coarse grained within representative volume elements. The prospect of discrete element modelling (DEM) being used as an everyday design tool for transfer chutes in the iron ore mining industry is becoming more and more probable. However, much care needs to be taken to ensure accurate results are obtained. Whilst there are many publications in industry portraying the potential of DEM, there is little evidence of where it has been validated against a real set of experimental results. The purpose of this investigation was to gauge whether the incorporation of the physical properties of a specific bulk material at the DEM pre-processing stage can yield visually and numerically accurate simulations for a simple flow case. Effects such as irregular particle shapes, varying frictional properties and coefficients of restitution, all found through experimentation were investigated. Video analysis was used to compare simulations to real flow cases. It was found the most critical attributes in determining the accuracy of the simulations were particle shape and wall friction. Keeping the particle-to-wall friction factor constant was not sufficient to describe the flow accurately. But by introducing the varying effects of wall friction with consolidation stress, the correct results were simulated.

"Tests were conducted on instrumented plates cast in the Abex Experimental Foundry to compare recorded solidification histories with results computed for corresponding models simulated with the C.A.S.T. program. The first plate was cast of low alloy steel and the second of carbon steel with a graphite chill at one end. Both were cast in molds of bonded silica sand. Temperature histories were recorded in the castings, molds and chill. Exceptionally good agreement was achieved between computed and experimental data. Other investigators will find the results useful as a benchmark against which they can compare the results of their own calculations.IntroductionSince the early 1970's our foundry engineers have used both two- and three-dimensional versions of the G.A.S.T. program to gain knowledge of the solidification process [1,2,3]. Study of the computed data gave insight as to how the rigging and risering of specific castings might be changed or adjusted to improve quality and yield. New schemes based on such analyses were then recommended for implementation on the foundry floor. The degree of success of the new practice was subsequently evaluated after the part had been poured, shaken out and examined. Similar conditions were noted in the sectioned castings whenever porosity and voids had been predicted by the computations. Appropriate modifications, when found successful in the model, were applied to the process. This led to a reduction, if not complete elimination, of the defects. Such results gave credence to the use of these programs as an aid in the production of better castings.Earlier investigations on simple shapes revealed excellent correlation between output derived with the G.A.S.T. program and exact solutions. Results also compared favorably with data calculated using other codes as reported in the literature [4] and summarized in the Appendix. However, since the computer program had not been verified by direct experiment, it was decided to run instrumented tests to check the theoretical predictions with actual measurements."

The disadvantages of the present zinc producing methods, RLE and ISP, are high energy consumption and environmental problems. Therefore, efforts have been directed in Outokumpu Zinc towards the development of alternate routes. One interesting pyrometallurgical process to produce zinc is to inject zinc calcine together with a solid reductant into molten iron, saturated with carbon. This process has been studied by thermodynamic calculations, laboratory tests and mini-pilot test runs at Outokumpu Research Oy, Pori, Finland. The results of these tests are presented and discussed in this paper. The mini-pilot tests demonstrated that over 97 per cent evaporation of the zinc was possible using a reactive coal dust as the reducing agent. The recovery of zinc in the metal phase was at best 88 per cent of input zinc, but only part reported in molten lead in the splash condenser. The final metallic zinc contained at best 98 per cent Zn, the main impurities being dissolved lead and coal carried along with the flue dusts.

The Los Alamos National Laboratory, under the sponsorship of the U.S. Department of Energy; is involved with laboratory and field experiments to assist in development of the Hot Dry Rock concept of geothermal energy. The field program consists of experiments in which hot rock of low permeability is hydraulically fractured between two wellbores. Water is circulated from one well to the other through the fractured hot rock. Our field experiments are designed to test reservoir engineering parameters such as heat-extraction rates, water-loss rates, flow characteristics including impedance and buoyancy, seismic activity, and fluid chemistry. Laboratory experiments were designed to provide information on the mineral-water reactivity encountered during the field program. Two experimental circulation systems tested the rates of dissolution and alteration during dynamic flow. SOlubil ity of rock in agitated systems was studied. Moreover, pure minerals, samples of the granodiorite from the actual reservoir, and Tijeras Canyon granite have been reacted with distilled water and various solutions of NaCl, NaOH, and Na.CO.. The results of these experimental systems are compared to the observations made in field experiments done within the hot dry rock reservoir at a depth of approxi-mately 3 km where the initial rock temperature was 150 to 200°C.

Thermodynamic data concerning FeO-containing slags is of importance in ladle refining of steel. With a view to generate a set of reliable and self-consistent thermodynamic data for these slags, experimental determination of the activities of FeO in binary and ternary slags was carried out using the gas equilibration method involving CO-C02-Ar gas mixtures at steelmaking temperatures. The slag samples in Pt crucibles were quenched after the equilibration and subjected to chemical analysis. The thermodynamic activities of "FeO" in the slags were calculated from the experimental data. The results are incorporated into a thermodynamic description of silicate melts in the present laboratory. The model is based on a Temkin-Lumsden approach and is able to compute the thermodynamics of higher order systems from the lower order ones.

In May 1975 the U. S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the University of Missouri-Rolla, Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Center to develop a Hydrominer modification to a long-wall shearer unit, wherein the rotating pick-laced drums and connecting gear drives are replaced by a water jet cutting head.1 The concept of the water jet cutting head is based on using the high localized energy of the water jets to isolate a slice of coal by cutting a slot under, at the back of, and at the top of the web. The plow blade of the head then advances into the cut and wedges the pillar over onto the conveyor (Figure 1). There were several potential advantages foreseen for the system of which perhaps the most significant were the elimination of coal dust from the working area2 and the ability, with a variation in nozzle geometry, to cut webs of greater depth with a small increase in equipment horsepower. The University initially designed the head, based on experiments carried out in the laboratory, under an earlier Bureau of mines contract. The experiments showed that it was more advantageous to work at a pressure of 10,000 psi with an estimated flow rate of 50 gpm than go to the higher pressures and lower flow rates which have been advocated elsewhere.

"En 1953, se habilita la nueva planta de flotación de cobre en Paragsha, donde el funcionamiento de las soleras tipo Lorain y la producción del mineral pirita lograron buenos resultados. Empero las nuevas condiciones de proceso, limitaron su funcionamiento y costo. Por tal motivo, el objetivo del trabajo se basa en la construcción de una solera de mayor rendimiento y menor costo, modificando su diseño al de una honda contínua. El primer juego de este diseño fue instalado en el molino de cobre Nº 1, sin aún obtener el dato final sobre su rendimiento. Posteriormente se consideró la solera AMSCO, dado que el diseño fue más eficiente y el costo final por tonelada fue menor. Sin embargo, se encontró que el contorno del valle era muy cerrado y las bolas N°4 se alojaban de modo ajustado, formando una solera muy gruesa. En consecuencia, se construyó otro diseño denominada ""Solera de onda abierta contínua"", el cual fue instalado en el molino de cobre N°7, donde la capacidad de molienda es igual de óptima y los costos son menores. Así, se pensó que la solera de una sola honda, es mejor que la de onda contínua puesto que este diseño tiene una sola honda en el centro de cada plancha de la solera. Luego, se diseño un tercer diseño, donde el promedio de vida era mejor. Por ello, de los tres diseños a seleccionar -la solera Lorain con 10 hondas, la solera de una honda con 20 hondas y la solera de honda continua de 30 hondas -, la última demostró ser la más eficiente. De otro lado, se probaron otros diseños de honda contínua con distintas aleaciones como el ""Nihard"", cuyo promedio de vida es entre 14 y15 meses aproximadamente, con el tonelaje actual de aproximadamente 270 000. Concluyendo que la experiencia anterior con solerasNihard en molinos a rodillos de 4 pies de diámetro, el impacto es mayor, obteniéndose en quebrantamiento de soleras a 3/4 grosor, pero que pese a esto, resulta ser superior a cualquier otra solera usada actualmente y en eñ que Paragsha esté 100% con soleras de molinos Nihard, a excepción de las rejillas dada su fragilidad. "

La influencia de los estudios de adsorción para el beneficio de los minerales, se relaciona con la flotabilidad de las especies minerales, y la perspectiva que se ofrece para el progreso de la metalurgia de concentración. Por ello, el objeto de la investigación se basa en la realización de tales experimentos como búsqueda del dominio de la clase de fenómenos fisico-químicos. Dentro de los métodos usuales de determinación de xantatos por yodo, se buscó hallar la concentración por medio del descenso de la adsorción, para determinar la máxima cantidad de reactivo y encontrar el más adecuado para el mineral. Empero, se reparó que a mayor concentración de colector, se genera mayor adsorción. Asímismo cuando se añade el xantato sobre el mineral con poca agua, la cantidad de reactivo adsorbida es superior, justificándose la ventaja que en procesos industriales significaría acondicionar después del espesamiento. En cuanto a la adsorción de galena oxidada, se observa que mezclando este mineral con un sulfuro de zinc, disminuye la adsorción. Posteriormente se ve cómo la superficie oxidada de la galena, puede alterarse por medio de reactivos, variando el grado de adsorción para los diferentes reactivos colectores de flotación. Finalmente se infiere que la realización de las pruebas pretenden determinar principalmente cuál es el reactivo más adecuado más adecuado para una galena determinada.

THE Lucy furnace, owned by Messrs. Carnegie, Kloman & Co., and located on the Alleghany River, on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, is a splendid modern furnace, 75 feet high, and 20 feet bosh. She had been working well on low grade ores of about 50 per cent., producing daily 68 to 75 tons. There was on stock 500 tons of Republic ore, one of the purest and best of the Lake Superior ores, averaging over 68 per cent. of iron, which had been procured for the purpose of making a trial for Bessemer iron. This was charged by itself, and Mr. Skelding, the founder, reports that he did not succeed in getting a single cast when it came down, before the furnace chilled from the hearth to the top of the boshes, some 25 feet.
