Models of ground surface elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, roughness, deformation, as well as other features are gathered together in the term Digital Terrain Model (DTM). DTMs can be generated from a wide range of technologies such as ground surveying, aerial and satellite imagery, including both active and passive sensors. Some elevation derived parameters, such as roughness and slope, can be measured directly using innovative active sensor technology and smart processing, rather than via traditional processing of elevation information. Such models are used as part of a visual interpretation process, and increasingly for computer-assisted analysis using visualisation technology. There is an ever-increasing demand for DTM information to be used in the mineral exploration and mining industry, and consistent pressure from industry to develop models of higher spatial resolution, higher accuracy, and better overall reliability, regardless of the world-wide location of interest. This presentation will survey the range of techniques available for DTM generation, including active (LIDAR, SAR interferometry and differential interferometry) and passive (optical or SAR stereo) methods, as well as interpolation methods (contour or structure interpolation), and the economic placement of these various techniques in the local and regional context. The research issue oftrue-ground elevation models and slopes is also addressed, using LIDAR and SAR polarimetry as signpost technologies. Particular emphasis will be given to the strengths and limitations of new data sources that will, over the next few years, make the acquisition of elevation models of remote regions of the world inexpensive and relatively accurate.

Mining operations are increasingly data-rich yet decisionconstrained. Fragmented systems, variability in geology and operations, and sustainability obligations create multiobjective trade-offs that classic analytics cannot reconcile at operational tempo. This paper proposes an end-to-end framework that fuses digital transformation practices (governed data platform, semantic layer, feature store, and MLOps) with generative AI (retrieval-augmented generation, tool-use, and agentic workflows) and decision intelligence (simulation/digital twins and multi-objective optimization). We formalize sustainability-aware objectives, define a practical stack and governance controls, and demonstrate how an AI “decision copilot” can surface options, quantify trade-offs, and document rationale. Two figures illustrate a production-grade architecture and a Pareto frontier for cost–emissions trade-offs; two tables operationalize decision-domain mapping and a transformation maturity rubric. The approach is product- and company-agnostic.

The adoption of digital technologies can lower the costs and risks for construction, commissioning, hand-over and transfer to operations eliminate many of the costs and delays associated with handovers and ensure fit for operations deliverables. In Mining, future projects could have 50/30 % less CAPEX/OPEX due to unmanned platforms, remote operations centers, and automated data collection lowering headcount. Additionally, these strategic investments can ultimately become profit centers beyond the traditional ROI paradigm, resulting in a greater return to shareholders/stakeholders for our customer organizations.

Recent experience has shown that all underground workplaces in the Campine Coalfield in Belgium will require controlled cooling within three years. Considering the socio-economic and legal importance of the climatic problems underground, IREA has undertaken studies in forecasting the climate of future workplaces, planning the necessary cooling equipment and optimizing efficiency in the existing cooling equipment. These studies are being carried out using the climate forecasting program of Bergbau-Forschung. So far, the German model has been obliged to utilize manually measured data from a few workplaces in the Campine. As the model does not fit very well with these measurements, it has been thought necessary to' develop a system of continuous data acquisition and transmission. This system is being tested in the Beringen mine of the N.V. Kempense Steenkollenmijnen. In the first part of this paper the digital tranmission system is described; in the second the sensors used to collect the necessary climatic data are presented, and in the third some results are given.

The N1 Porto tunnel project is a 650m segment of large-scale civil engineering plan to improve traffic flow between Porto’s downtown district, the Santo Antonio hospital district and the highway access. The tunnel is being excavated into a massive “Granito do Porto” granite structure, 4 – 20m below a highly urbanized environment of Porto, Portugal. The project was originally started in 2000 and was stopped due to the inability to mechanically excavate the granite rock. The city of Porto engineers then turned to traditional drilling and blasting techniques. The use of pyrotechnical delay detonators did not easily comply with the specified environmental and safety requirements concerning blast charging, firing and vibration control resulting in the process taking far too much time. The introduction of digital blasting was proposed to overcome these concerns.

State-of-the-art automation technology enables digitalization of the continuous casting process that goes far beyond conventional automation of industrial production. Primetals Technologies provides a digital twin that combines an intelligent digital representation of a casting machine as well as the casting process and the slabs, blooms or billets that are produced. It allows metallurgists and process engineers to predict the behavior of the involved complex production process and optimize parameters before using them in real production. New steel grades or production processes can be evaluated off-line without any risks to process stability and product quality. Primetals Technologies installs the digital twin with every new installation of a continuous caster optimization system. This paper describes how the setup and simulation possibilities of the digital twin provide numerous benefits by modelling and simulating the casting process. It allows for example the calculation of material properties according to the actual composition, strand surface temperature profiles and dynamic soft reduction before the final point of solidification. An outstanding feature of the digital twin is the replay functionality provided for various models to analyze and further optimize real production situations. The paper also gives an example how usage of the digital twin optimized production at a customer.

"In the past, simulation was considered to be an offline tool disconnected from plant operation. Advancements in the computation power combined with utilizing physics and chemistry sciences have allowed us to significantly improve the modeling and simulation technology for mining and mineral processing. This paper investigates the benefits of first principle models and simulation by connecting them to real time operation. Process data are connected to high fidelity models executed in parallel to the operation. In recent literature, this concept is known as Digital Twins. The Digital Twin is used for various purposes such as optimization, virtual instrumentation and condition monitoring. Using IDEAS™ simulation software we are able to construct a digital twin for different equipment inside a mineral processing plant. Two case studies for building a digital twin for the primary hydrocyclone feed pump and thickener underflow are presented. Using the pump’s model, a digital twin is developed and is installed in a gold extraction plant that is able to infer the slurry density in real time. Additionally, it is used for detecting sanding in the pipes and impeller condition monitoring.INTRODUCTION Since the eighties, thanks to advances in computation technologies, computer based simulation of processes using first principle models has become a well-known engineering tool for various industries. As our understanding of processes has increased, their representative models have become more realistic and more sophisticated. Due to this increase of accuracy, use of simulation is becoming more fundamental in process industries. The main goals to use accurate simulation is to decrease the engineering and construction cost, optimize the process design and improve the operation performance by decreasing operation cost and increasing efficiency. The term Digital Twin was first introduced in 2010 by NASA (Shafto et al., 2012) in aerospace industry. Subsequently, the concept quickly spread through other industries. As of today, no standard organization has provided an official and unique definition of Digital Twin for process industries. However, there are three important aspects that are common throughout various descriptions. When simulation is core functionality of the process (1) along the entire life cycle of the plant (2) with direct linkage to operation (3), it is called that process has a Digital Twin. Two examples are presented to show how first-principles – physical-dynamic, here termed behavioural modelling, is used to build digital twins of unit processes or plant sections. A digital twin equips the metallurgist, engineer, or manager with a powerful tool to conduct model-based design, solve process problems and improve operations. It is particularly relevant in the metallurgical industry where plant behaviour is highly integrated, rates respond to particle dynamics in complicated ways and mineral flows across flowsheet boundaries are variable. The two examples used to illustrate the behavioural modelling methodology are 1) a flotation column unit block and 2) a multi-compartment pressure oxidation (POX) autoclave. It simultaneously accounts for the causality of material and heat flow, takes care of mineral particle dynamics, physical and chemical reaction rates, the plant control system behaviour and operating heuristics. The basic modelling building blocks are briefly reviewed to show how the behavioural modelling attributes constrain the mass and heat flow dynamics to physically realistic values. This is the key aspect that allows project value to be created with minimal input data. Behavioural modelling is especially valuable where the process dynamics are poorly understood or controlled, where data-driven models fail to cope with complex and highly integrated plant behaviour, where quality data is lacking or limited funds are available to generate the data required to fill all the knowledge gaps. The paper uses the flotation column example to show how behavioural modelling and simulation can be used to optimise plant performance, while the multi-compartment POX autoclave model shows how it can be used to diagnose process problems. It also provides a solid basis to add a data-driven component – in other words, it makes a strong case for a hybrid first-principle– data-driven approach to solve process problems, especially where microscopic-level understanding is poor. In recent years, Industry 4.0 has generated a change in the way companies in various industrial sectors design, produce and deliver products and services, and is focused on the interconnection of systems, the advanced access and management of large amounts of data in real time, and the implementation of emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), digital twins (DT), robotics, virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR), among others [1]. DTs are accurate and dynamic virtual models that replicate physical systems, where it is possible to simulate and optimize operations before implementing real-world changes [3]. These features make it possible to reduce investment costs, minimize risks and improve strategic decision-making. These benefits are of utmost importance for tailings storage facilities (TSF), since they are facilities aimed at the safe storage of tailings and with the constant need for growth [4]. This paper evaluates the applicability of a DT in a TSF from a conceptual perspective, providing the advantages of its implementation, but also the barriers identified in the industry based on the authors’ experience.

The demand for sustainable and profitable/efficient projects within the tunneling and other underground engineering sectors grows rapidly. Construction tasks play a key role within the project conduction, whether as primary (tunneling), secondary (e.g., mine securing) or tertiary processes (e.g., workshops). The construction tasks of primary processes create the main structures, such as tunnels, which resemble the main project goal. For the secondary and tertiary processes, the purpose of the task shifts. The main goal is to provide structures, such as the securing of the cavity and workshops, that enable the project and enhance the efficiency of the primary conduction underground. To plan and optimize the conduction of construction tasks underground, whether they are identified as primary, secondary or tertiary tasks, the work preparation can be used. This method, known from the above ground construction, can be adapted and used underground. The approach of a digital work preparation tool combines, connects and adapts the main tasks “choice of procedure,” “logistics” and “site planning.” In addition, the digital tool is connected with digital models (construction, site, surroundings). With the adaption and forward projection of the work preparation, underground constructions (e.g., tunneling) can provide a more sustainable and efficient outcome.

Sin embargo, ante el crecimiento de las flotas, el incremento de la cantidad de información que se recibían de los diferentes sistemas de los equipos, esta forma de trabajo fue quedando obsoleta, por lo cual las plataformas de la gestión de mantenimiento requerían ser robustecidos, de manera que se aproveche las nuevas tecnologías, la gestión de datos automatizadas, el modelamiento de fallas, en otras palabras, la modernización en general de la gestión.

This paper explains how new digital solutions improve reverse circulation drilling operations. Upgrading field-proven reverse circulation drilling (RCD) rigs with new digital technologies enables semiautomated drilling, with upgrade options for fully automated & remote drilling. Key elements of the improvements are electrically controlled valve systems, process instrumentations, a state of the art machine controller and drilling operation via a touch control panel. Automation of core processes, such as adding drill pipes, reduces set-up times, increases machine uptime for drilling and as a result efficiency. While drilling, sensors provide continuous feedback, which is used to automatically adjust e.g. the weight on bit to the optimum; resulting in an increased rate of penetration and less wear and tear. While in the past hydraulic power packs (HPU) have typically been operated at a constant high-performance level with related high fuel consumption, a new interface between the machine controller and the power unit regulates the HPU performance exactly according to the actual drilling operation needs. This leads to significant fuel consumption reduction. The safety benefits of the digital improvements are the ability to remotely operate the rig in challenging site conditions via a mobile operator panel.

Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) with remote wireless programming and initiation capabilities have been successfully used for almost two years now. This system has been used in blasts mainly in South Africa, but also in South America and other countries in Africa. Initially the industry was slow to accept the idea of remote programming and blasting. The advantages were not fully understood and there were some safety concerns. With close to 200 successful blasts as a reference, a much better understanding exists. The advantage of such a system becomes even more significant when the programming of the detonators is digitally integrated with the blast design software as used by the Blast Engineer. It is now possible to import a survey file into the blast design software, to do the blast design using actual hole positions and to then export the designed firing times directly to the detonators down the hole via remote wireless communication. Mines that have been exposed to this technology favour it to the extent that wireless centralised programming is becoming the norm against which other electronic delay detonator technologies are measured.

In many occasions during the Mining operation life, blasting engineers find different and controversial results of fragmentation, dilution or wall control for the same geotechnical domain and blast design (pattern and explosive charge). Most of the times, the difference between same blast designs is not measured, not controlled. Once a blast designed is defined, the most important part of the process after that is the implementation of every step of the blast on site. Almost nobody is measuring it, controlling it, but just controlling implementation is possible to relate blast design with results in a consistent way, to optimize the full process of D&B. Controlling implementation not only per event but also to check and change trends and decision-making is paramount for optimization and saving millions of extra costs every year. The lack of resources and the hardness to manage all the info created every day in a blast make this process very tough and difficult to maintain in long term. The use of new technologies on site and software that allows a best, more consistent and continuous control of blast implementation have been proved to be the key for optimizations and cost saving. This document shows the evolution of drilling and blast digitization process, savings and trends in a mine, using new technologies that creates business opportunities and general improvement of D&B process.

Drilling and Blasting are core operations in a mine. They impact all the downstream operations and their costs. Digital technologies exist for optimizing both drilling and blasting for many years. However, these technologies have largely been non-integrated and non-real time. This gap results in sub-optimal drilling and blasting operations. Also traditionally focus has been on optimizing individual areas (drilling or blasting and subsequent subsystems). Industry has largely lacked real time or near real time integration available to the user in the field and in the office. In this paper, a case study is presented of a large global cement company using a cloud and mobile based platform across 17 of their mines consistently over a large number of users over a period of over two years. The use of a blast platform is detailed which include blast designs, blast data collection and the trends in terms of results. On the drilling side, this paper describes the ability to capture drill logs, plod reports etc. Also actual drilling information in the field using a mobile device and its real time synchronization with a blast designer to provide visibility of expected fragmentation and vibration levels based on the drilling done. Key parameters such as hole ID, design depth, actual depth, hole status, designed and actual charge (length and weight), designed and actual stemming length are captured. The case study also highlights the challenges in technology adoption and implementation in mining in drilling and blasting. Making drill and blast results predictable should be the desired direction. Also digital technology tool adoption has been seen at the biggest miners – not so much in mid-sized miners or drill and blast contractors. Benefits of this platform on the safety side are highlighted including predictions on safety parameters and appropriate alerts if blast safety parameter / clearance zones are not met. The safety parameters are made available visually to the operator using maps and / or on drone images. Future possible improvements in the digital technology platform at the site are also highlighted including greater possible automation.

There are many assets on a typical industrial site that are not monitored continuously by a SCADA system or the DCS. Many of these assets are critical and must be running correctly for production to meet its targets. Most companies schedule inspections of these assets regularly by sending skilled operators to the field who take notes using paper and a clipboard. There are many advantages related to the digital transformation of operator rounds. In particular, the collection process is supported by digital prompts and the data — once it is collected — is automatically routed to a database and made readily available to all the software applications and stakeholders that need it.
