The Research and Development Services of South Africa has begun underground trials with a Robbins 52RE blindhole borer using a cutterhead fitted with high pressure water jets to assist mechanical cutting. The objectives of the work are to reduce cutter costs by increasing cutter life and to increase overall penetration rates. The paper reviews blindhole boring in South Africa and laboratory experiments in rock cutting assisted with high pressure water jets. The borer and its ancillary equipment are described. Initial results of underground boring experiments are presented. The paper concludes with the test programme for the future.

The evaluation criteria for cost comparison of the Gearless Drive, also called Ringmotor or wrap-around motor, as variable-speed drive with a Twin Drive System using synchronous motors are reviewed. Both mechanical and electrical components of the drive system are considered. The evaluation criteria are described and for the cost comparison the applicable method is demonstrated. The cost comparison is based on a medium and large sized mill system. Each drive package will display cost details with regard to capital cost, maintenance, power losses, overall efficiency, overhead and loss of production. As conclusion the benefits and disadvantages of the two drive/mill packages will be presented together with a payback diagram.

Two 32 foot x 14% foot, 6.4 MW autogenous mills have been installed in the Mount Isa Mines Copper Concentrator to replace the fine crushing plant, fine ore bin, rod mills and primary ball mills. This paper describes the reasons for the change, the rationale for the new circuit design and configuration, the design and scale-up processes used to size the mills, considerations for the installation of large mills inside an operating concentrator and some early operating data.

During the next five years, there will be a trend toward performing belt cleaner maintenance while the conveyor is in operation. Most mines and industrial sites that use belt conveyors have an in-house safety rule that the belt must be stopped before maintenance work can be performed on any belt-cleaning device. This is a good rule. Most cleaning devices are positioned against the belt with hardware that requires the service technician to reach or climb into the chute to change the cleaning blades. But this simple rule becomes more complicated as production demands require higher conveyor availability and provide fewer conveyor outages. In many cases, today’s conveyors are expected to be available 98% to100% of the time.

"The success of a tunnel project relies on many factors, but one of the most important is also the most overlooked: coordination by all parties involved during the design stages. This is particularly true of segment design and TBM design. Tunnel lining with segmental rings is usually designed according to the standards of reinforced concrete construction based on a given GBR. However, for TBM tunneling, the determination of loads during ring erection, advance of the TBM, earth pressure, and bedding of the articulated ring are all part of the tunnel lining design as well. TBM design can be heavily affected by the segment arrangement, dimension, and weight, but these are usually given as a fixed input to the TBM manufacturer—a process that can cause unnecessary complications. The authors propose that the industry evaluate the process as it stands. In order to find the optimum balance between lining design and TBM cost and operational workflow, both designs should be finalized concurrently. This requires coordination between the TBM manufacturer and segment designer from the early stages. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the influence of the segment lining design on TBM cost and performance, and to provide commentary on existing design guidelines to optimize lining and TBM procurement. INTRODUCTION The conventional project setup for tunnel lining design and the design and manufacture of the tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be coordinated in a timelier manner. It is widely acknowledged that the design of segments must consider the forces exerted by TBM rams during tunnel construction, but other inputs are most frequently provided to the TBM manufacturer as fixed parameters to design around. This paper describes other important factors in TBM design that impact not only the interaction with the segments, but also the construction of the tunnel in terms of overall production and even safety. For example, the segment width and tapering have direct influence on shield body length and thrust cylinder size. Furthermore, TBM geometry can also affect the backup (trailing gear) layout and length."

Microscale studies involving an ultrafast load cell have been shown to provide direct and accurate measurements of particle strength, particle fracture energy and particle breakage functions under different loading geometry conditions. The effect of grinding media size, shape, density and surface properties on the energy efficiency can be quantitatively determined for different materials to be ground. The applications of microscale comminution studies have been demonstrated to provide good predictions of grinding mill performance with different grinding media.

Since the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro and the publication of the agenda 21, the concept of Sustainable Development has become one of the major issues for governmental politics, societal developments and entrepreneurial policies. Current projects that deal with Sustainable Development in the mineral raw materials sector mainly focus on large-scale mining operations - especially for open pit mining - or on artisanal small scale mining. Artisanal small scale mining is in this connexion characterised as non-mechanized and mostly illegal mining activities. The number of workers is mostly far below 20. However, until now there exist no assessments or analyses with respect to the actual or potential contribution of industrial small scale mining to sustainable development. Industrial small scale mining refers to high technology or highly mechanized/automated extraction of small, high-grade deposits that due to their small size ? in combination with geological, depth and other constraints ? are not economically exploitable with large-scale mining operations. The Institute of Mining Engineering I and the Institute for Processing of Mineral Raw Materials at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany is currently conducting a research project financed by the German Research Foundation in order to investigate this issue. In the course of this project the sustainability of industrial small scale mining will be assessed. Therefore sustainability indicators, an assessment system and recommendations as well as options for actions and policies will be developed, in order to evaluate current industrial small scale mining activities as well as the potential for future developments in industrial small scale mining, both from a technological as well as from the point of view of sustainability, considering economical, social and environmental chances and risks.

"Mining companies have started using quantitative tools, including computer models of community interaction, to gain intelligence on social risks surrounding their projects. Models of changes in community preferences regarding mining projects over time are useful for evaluating changes in project risk due to changes in the social license to operate. For example, agent-based models that use information diffusion models and social networks are useful for studying those changes due to information diffusion. However, such agent-based models are sensitive to many input parameters including the parameters of the diffusion model and the average degree of the social network. This work evaluates the sensitivity of such a model to diffusion and network model parameters (probability of imitation, probability of innovation, and average degree) using the first order and total sensitivity indices. The results show that the model is much more sensitive to the probability of imitation than the other two parameters. Thus, to reduce uncertainty surrounding the model’s predictions of community acceptance of mining, mines need to obtain accurate estimates of the probability of imitation. AGENT-BASED MODEL OF COMMUNITY ACCEPTANCE A few researchers have started using agent-based models to study mining systems (Fujiono 2011; Nakagawa et al. 2013; Bahr 2015; Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b). Nakagawa and co-workers used ABM to evaluate dynamics of a mining project’s stakeholder networks whereas Fujiono used ABM to study innovation diffusion in the mining industry. Our previous work has presented models and a framework for modeling information diffusion in a mining community and its impact on level of acceptance (a measure of SLO) of the mining project (Boateng and Awuah-Offei 2017a, b)."

A geotechnical monitoring program has been implemented at Energy West Mining Company for enhancing site-specific evaluation of longwall stress conditions. This program consists of underground measurements at five locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon Coal Seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on recorded seismic events and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program together with detailed geologic mapping of longwall gateroads. In conjunction with the measurement program, the authors have completed detailed boundary-element stress analyses of the mine plans. Models have been calibrated using the data from in-mine instrumentations and then routinely used for evaluation of mine plans at depths approaching 2,600-ft. The work has improved our understanding of load transfer, seismicity and yield pillar performance. It has identified areas of potential increased stress levels at certain longwall face positions and provided guidance to measures that could be considered to mitigate the potential for these increased stress levels.

There is general agreement among those involved in occupational and public health that work-related diseases are under-diagnosed and under-reported. Highmark is particularly well positioned to carry out industry health analysis as it provides medical insurance for approximately three quarters of the insured population of Western Pennsylvania including some of the areas largest employers. The purpose of this study is to gain a more accurate understanding of the mining industry rates of respiratory diseases that maybe occupationally related and identify those inflated respiratory disease and hearing loss rates. Conditions examined included COPD, asthma, and pneumoconiosis.

It is doubtful if anyone knows precisely how many U.S. coal miners have been killed by roof falls. In 1931, 51 miners were killed by falls or rock in every 10-day period (Paul, 1). Roley (2) indicated that from 1882 to 1945, over 3,700 men were killed by roof falls in Illinois alone. During this 63-year period, roof falls accounted for 47.6 percent of the coal mine accident fatalities. Similarly, Price and Nolting (3) reported that during the 10-year period beginning in 1937, roof falls claimed over 50 percent of the lives lost in West Virginia coal mines. Over 150 miners died under fallen rock in West Virginia alone, in each of those years. Certainly, the statistics have improved over the years. The Theodore Barry Report of 1971 (4) indicated that during, the previous 4 years, fewer than 100 miners per year lost their lives to roof falls--in the entire United States. The improvement is less remarkable when it is realized that the accident rate has declined only as the number of miners employed underground has declined. The TRW Report (4) pointed out that although the number of fatalities in underground coal mining (from all causes) had been cut in half from 1956 to 1965, the fatality rate per thousand miners had remained virtually constant. The decreased accident rate was due not to a reduction in hazards but to a reduction in work force. Roof falls still claim approximately 50 percent of the lives lost in underground coal mines. Considering the increased underground production of coal which must result from our energy crisis, the environmentalists' pressure against strip mining, and our inevitably diminishing supply of strippable coal, it is apparent that some means must be found to reduce the number of lives claimed by coal mine roof falls.

The Negociacion Minera Santa Maria De La Paz mining operations are located at La Paz (some eight miles West of Matehuala), State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. These operations consist of a single copper-silver property, called the Dolores mine and a number of silver-low base metal properties. The ores from these several mines are transported by rail, or truck, to the central milling unit. The milling unit has two separate sections to treat the two types of ore. The ores from the several silver-base metal mines are mixed at the mill as they arrive. Up to the present time the silver-base metal ores have been milled to produce a bulk concentrate which carries valued in gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, cadmium and considerable arsenic. In such concentration the zinc and cadmium values are lost to the operations in their liquidations as they are shipped as lead concentrates. Since these ores have exceptional quantities of arsenic which is concentrated in the milling process, these bulk concentrates have to be sent to a smelter for pre-smelting operations to remove the arsenic.

The separation of liquids from granular materials has been widely studied by a number of: investigators over a period of years in an effort to more fully understand the physical phenomenon which occurs. Liquid may be removed from solids, or partially removed, by gravity separation, mechanical separation' or heat drying. Mechanical separation is advantageous when compared to heat drying principally from a cost saving standpoint and also on certain materials which are heat sensitive. It is realized however that mechanical separation of liquids has certain practical limitations. In order to evaluate the efficiency of mechanical separation and predict the extent of, liquid removal, it is first necessary to study the forces which hold the liquid to the solids. From a very practical observation using gravity drainage, it is soon obvious that a pile of coarse solids will drain faster and retain less liquid than a pile of finely divided solids of the same material. For commercial operations it is important to estimate the residual liquid which will remain after a mechanical separation. Batel (1) explored the various quantities of liquid present in the interstices of the bulk granular material. From his work and other authors which he has correlated in one of his recent papers, various formulas are now available which permit an empirical relationship to be developed showing residual moisture versus mechanical separating forces.

INTRODUCTION The inactive uranium mill tailings investigated in this study are located in two mining districts, Elliot Lake and Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. The sites exhibit a mixture of surface features consisting of dry areas, with or without vegetation and areas covered with water. On the edges of the water bodies, indigenous vegetation has invaded the tailings beaches [ Typha] spp. (Tourn.) L. a dominant plant on these tailings beaches, has been studied for the uptake of radium-226 and lead-210 (Kalin and Sharma, 1981b) from the tailings. It was found that most of the radium-226 remains in the roots of the plants, and that the solubility of radium-226 in control soil differs from that in tailings. The uptake of radium226 by vegetation and other biota is related to the solubility of the element in water. Factors controlling the solubility of radium-226 in uranium mill tailings are of interest in assessing the environments effects of these wastes. Rusanova (1962) found that the soluble or extractable amount of radium from the soil is inversely related to the total concentration of calcium and magnesium in the soil. Experimental work has clarified some aspects of the leachability of radium from uranium mill tailings (Levins, et al., 1978; Wiles, 1978, and others). Halvik, et al., (1967) studied the effects of pH and chemical composition of surface water on the liberation of radium from uranium mill tailings and uranium ore. He found that an increase in pH, up to a value of pH 9, decreases the amount of radium released from the tailings and the ore. A positive effect of calcium chloride was noted on the leachability of radium. Benes (1981) reviewed the physicochemical forms of radium and its migration in water. Based on experimental work, he identifies primary factors which determine leaching of radium from uranium mill tailings. The ratio of the volume of the leaching solution to the weight of the leached sample; the composition of the leached solids and the leaching solution, and finally the pH of the leaching mixture are of importance. He emphasized that a scarcity of field data exists, which would relate experimental work to the actual situation in the tailings ponds. Inactive tailings ponds in Ontario are 16 to 23 years old, and processes which are of importance in evaluating the long term effects of uranium mill tailings in the environment can be studied. The objective of this work was to investigate the leachability of radium-226 from the tailings under field conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sample Collection A description of inactive tailings sites in Ontario, where the tailings and the water for this study were collected, can be found in a report by Kalin (1981). [Typha] spp. specimens were excavated from 16 different locations along with the tailings attached to the roots of the plants. A tailings sample from the surface area, around the plant, was secured before the excavation. Tailings samples were also collected from dry areas free of vegetation in the vicinity of the wetland stand. Surface samples (depth 0-5 cm) and samples at a depth of 20-25 cm were secured. Water was collected from the shallow tailings beaches around the vegetation stands. Sample Preparation The roots of the plants were washed free of tailings with distilled water. The resulting thick slurry of tailings was allowed to settle in the wash basin for five minutes and the supernatant water was decanted. The remaining saturated tailings were brought to 400 ml volume with distilled water in a beaker. The slurry was mixed with a magnetic stirrer for two 24-hour periods. After the first 24-hours, the slurry was allowed to settle for 20 minutes and the supernatant water was removed. The remaining sediments were suspended again in distilled water (400 ml total mixture) and leached for a second 24hour period. The tailings slurries from the different locations had a solid to liquid ratio, which ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 grams of dry tailings material per millilitre. The variations in the ratios are the result of differing fractions of coarse and fine tailings on the sites. In the final leachates, the solid to liquid ratios of the samples were 0.17 (±0.1) g/ml. The pH of the surface water and the leachate was determined with an I.L. Portomatic pH meter. All the tailings samples were homogenized in a mortar and brought to dryness at 75 to 85°C. The natural separation of one element or compound from others in the earth's crust is a rare geological phenomenon; accumulation of large quantities of a separated substance forms mineral deposits of value. Although igneous and metamorphic processes are effective at times, by far the most significant fractionation is sedimentary. High-silica sandstone, high-purity limestone and dolomite, salt, and anhydrite-gypsum occur in very large deposits and are termed first-order fractionates. The marine diatomite of California, the trona of Wyoming, and the kaolin of Georgia and South Carolina are in deposits of comparable purity but smaller size, and are designated second-order fractionates. The paper considers the various processes and environments in which such industrially valuable deposits were formed.

The training program developed at Sierrita over the last twelve months has led to several significant improvements in both safety performance and productivity. Our most easily quantified results have been in truck productivity, where we have also experienced a 6% decrease in truck cycle times. We feel this is due to increased skill levels and awareness on the part of our operators due to our new training effort. The cycle time improvement has resulted in an increase in Truck productivity of 6%. Costs associated with productivity training have been $160,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1,400,000 in savings directly attributable to the increased skill levels of our technicians due to our training effort. As such, this represents a solid, high return investment at Sierrita.

Injecting pressurized water into a coalbed prior to mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Because of economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is now limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes that are drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob-gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob-gas boreholes. Computer coalbed-reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water-infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.
