Barbaro et al. (1990) implemented a tedious study aimed at delineating the short-scale spatial variability of sulfur in a coal seam. It is not possible, however, to extend their conclusions to any other coal seam or use theirs in any other fashion, because the background geology was not presented. Nor were the conclusions accompanied by geological interpretations in the paper. In addition, an unfortunate printing error occurred where the total sulfur (determined by High Temperature Combustion) variogram in Fig.3 was duplicated in Fig. 2 instead of the seam height variogram. A more serious error, however, has been committed in the definition of the variable, seam height. What is defined as seam height by Barbaro et al. (1990) is, in essence, mining height, and is not a regionalized variable that should be studied by geostatistical methods directly. Despite the fact that the variable, seam height, is not defined in the paper explicitly, the following quotation discloses the fallacy: "All roof rock that exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft) from the floor was not taken because the longwall was operated to not mine more than 1.8 m (6 ft) unless the coal seam height exceeded 1.8 m (6 ft)." From this definition, the seam height, and therefore the sampling height, is equal to the actual coal thickness, if the coal thickness is greater than 1.8 m (6 ft). Otherwise, it is equal to the sum of the coal thickness plus the thickness of the roof rock that complements the thickness to 1.8 m (6 ft). In the latter case, the seam height is constant and equal to 1.8 m (6 ft). It is possible to conduct a variogram study on a pool of samples that are realizations of two different variables. But the conclusions derived would not belong to any one of the two variables uniquely and, therefore, do not possess any significance. Geostatistical analysis is irrelevant for the sum of multiple regionalized variables formed by arbitrary selections. In a two¬seam setting, for example, the mining height, as defined by the thickness of one seam at one location and the thickness of both seams at another location (due to quality and/or minimum thickness considerations perhaps), should not be used in the calculation of one common variogram. The two seams should be modeled separately. They can then be combined according to the specific purposes of the study. On the other hand, if a constant is added to a regionalized variable (to incorporate dilution perhaps), the variogram of the new variable will not change. Barbaro et al.( 1990), surprisingly, does not give any geologi¬cal interpretation of their results despite the fact that most of them can be explained by the origins of sulfur in a coal seam. The presentation of the results of a geostatistical study with no reference to the geology of the deposit is uninformative. It may also be misleading for the potential users of geostatistics. It is not unusual to find nuggets of pyrite in coal seams. In such cases, pyritic sulfur will probably display a spatial structure for only a very small distance that will appear in the experimen-

"INTRODUCTION In underground longwall coal mining, the mined-out areas or gobs frequently contain methane which can form explosive methane-air mixtures. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of such explosive mixtures, herein referred to as Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs), inside and around the perimeter of bleeder-ventilated longwall gobs (Loane et al., 1975; Lynn et al., 1986; Elkins, et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001; Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012; Brune, 2013). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Several factors can induce EGZs outflowing from the gob, but the most common cause is the fluctuating barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Other sudden pressure changes can result from roof falls, failing ventilation controls and fan outages. Any such fluctuation of mine ventilation pressure will disturb the pressure differential between the gob and the surrounding mine workings and may cause EGZs to outgas from the gob. The correlation between major mine explosions and abrupt barometric pressure changes has been studied and confirmed for explosions in coal mining countries including the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Poland (Hosler, 1948; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Hemp, 1994; Wasilewski, 2014; Belle, 2014; and Lolon, 2017). Disastrous mine explosions appear to happen more frequently during stormy weather, which, in the United States, typically occurs during the late fall and winter seasons. ROOT CAUSE AND EFFECT OF GOB BREATHING Gob breathing is the result of the pressure differential between gob internal and external pressures caused by external atmospheric pressure fluctuations that occur naturally as a result of gravitational and thermal forces in the atmosphere (Lindzen and Chapman, 1969). Other major and sudden pressure changes may be caused by fan failures, failures of ventilation controls or roof falls can also cause an unexpected gob breathing. Normal barometric fluctuations occur every day but usually do not pose an explosion risk as they occur gradually so gob pressures have sufficient time to equilibrate. More extreme fluctuations associated with cyclonic weather systems and storms often result in more rapid and larger drops or rises in barometric pressure (Hosler, 1948; Fauconnier, 1992). A study by Lolon (2017) found that the timing of historical mine explosions showed consistency with the occurrence of abrupt and intense barometric variations."

What happens when the skull and crossbones goes on a product? In the case of cancer warnings, the consequences can be severe. If the label contains the term "lung carcinogen", you might expect to compensate a lot of smokers, meet a lot of expensive lawyers, be counseled by equally expensive consultants and pay sharply elevated insurance premiums, if you are able to obtain coverage at all. At the extreme, you may face plant shutdowns, job losses or even Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Regardless of how you fare, you are likely to learn some very disconcerting things about the risk evaluation and regulatory system which required you to label in the first place. If a particular material or product does pose a health risk, you are obliged both legally and morally to warn those potentially exposed. Once that warning appears on the label, however, the consequences are often beyond your control. You and your embattled product become part of a legal/regulatory system which has a life of its own. Therefore, the issue of health labeling is not so much whether one warns but rather whether the warning itself is justified and the reasonableness of what happens afterwards. It is this matter of justification and reasonableness, particularly of cancer warnings, which this paper addresses. Until, as they say, your ox has been gored, we tend to believe that risk is determined by the best available technology and expertise We expect that risk evaluators appreciate the ramifications of their work and place things in proper perspective; that risk has been appropriately demonstrated before it is publicized and regulated; that the time-honored concept of prudence, to err on the side of safety, has not been excessively stretched. Since the hypothesis of coal and methane outburst mechanism based on elastic mechanics gives no consideration to time, it can not give a satisfactory explanation to the outburst occurrence and its development. A creep mathematical model of coal containing gas has been set up through creep tests and analysis under the condition of tri-axial compression. And the model can explain the phenomena of coal and methane outburst successfully. The tests proved that there is no essential difference between the rheological properties of prone outburst coal and non-prone outburst coal. Outburst can take place in any kind of coal if the rheological conditions of coal containing gas are met. The creep mathematical model provides a basis for establishing a comprehensive index of coal and methane outburst possibility.

Western Australia is the largest state in Australia with an area one and three quarter times the size of Texas. Most of the State is desert or semi-desert, and only the southwest corner is heavily populated. The State has a population of one and a half million people, and one million of these live in and around the city of Perth. Perth is located on the narrow Swan Coastal Plain and is flanked by the Indian Ocean and the Darling Plateau. The Darling Plateau is an ancient peneplain rising some 300 metres above sea level, and forms an important resource base for the population. The Darling Plateau is old, having been formed some 200 million years ago, and its soils are deeply weathered. The parent materials were granite and gneis which have broken down to form lateritic gravels, overlying dense kaolinitic clays. Some 30 million years ago, in the Tertiary period, a sub - tropical climate prevailed. Appropriate conditions of moisture, temperature and drainage led to extensive laterisation. Some of the laterite contains bauxite of mineable quality. Some 1.9 million hectares of the south-west of Western Australia is covered by eucalypt forests. The driving force behind most advances in technology is need. In the early 1980s, underground coal miners in the USA wanted to build longer conveyors to handle larger capacities but continue to use fabric reinforced belting with mechanical fasteners. Conveyors with intermediate drives were certainly the answer but achieving reliable designs required a significant learning curve. Basic design methodologies had to evolve including advanced simulation of starting and stopping along with complex control techniques and logic. Some components also evolved as specific performance requirements changed Today, in addition to underground mining, the technology has been used extensively in the tunneling industry where the need is for control of belt tensions to negotiate tight horizontal curves. Even though intermediate drives are not used extensively on the surface yet, the lessons learned will find their way to long overland surface conveyance where smaller components are more available and reliable, and often with less capital cost. This paper will document the evolution of intermediate drive technology over the last 30 years and will show examples of its current use.

Paques and Umicore have demonstrated the feasibility of biological treatment of the highly complex Hoboken wastewaters in a1 m3/h pilot plant at Umicore Precious Metals, Hoboken, Belgium. In the first step arsenic was precipitated from copper smelter effluent as As2S3using biogenic produced H2S. Other metals such as copper, lead and cadmium were also removed as MeS to concentrations well below the discharge levels. Subsequently, sulfate and nitrate were removed to low concentrations (<300 mg/l and < 5 mg/l respectively) in high rate engineered bioreactors. Sulfide produced in the sulfate reduction process was recycled to step 1 for metals precipitation. Selenite/selenate was partly removed in the sulfide precipitation step, whereas the excess was biologically reduced and removed as selenium to concentrations <0.2 mg/l.

Geochemical kinetic models have only become available in recent years and their utilisation in the prediction of effluent chemistry from sulfidic waste rock piles is even more recent. The models used to date, however, have incorporated some questionable assumptions. This paper shows how geochemical, mineralogical and physical field data have been coupled to remove some ill-founded assumptions in the construction of a geochemical kinetic model. Further, the paper discusses a comparison between the observed effluent chemistry from a waste rock dump at the Rum Jungle copper/uranium mine in northern Australia with model predictions. In general, there is good agreement between the two, although an anomalous result is discussed.

The Tertiary Silverton caldera collapsed asymmetrically to the southwest 27.5 m.y. ago. Resurgent volcanic activity is expressed by a quartz-monzonite stock at the southern caldera margin and by the Red Mountain porphyry stock in the northwest of the caldera which were emplaced at 25 m.y. and 11 m.y. b.p., respectively. The apical Eureka graben formed between 27.5-22.5 m.y. ago and transects the Silverton caldera southwestward. In the northeast it terminates at the 22.5 m.y. Lake City caldera margin. This graben as well as caldera faults provide dominant structural control for base and precious metal deposits. The epithermal gold mineralization of the Gold King mine is proximal to the Red Mountain stock in the north central part of the caldera. Here, west-northwest striking faults related to the collapse of the caldera intersect northeast faults of the Eureka graben. Superimposed upon earlier base metal mineralization at 23 to 22.5 m.y. b.p., the 11 m.y. younger gold metallization was a distinct event at Gold King. Supergene enrichment of the hypogene precious metal assemblage resulted in a metal tenor of up to 3,016 g/t gold and 1,088 g/t silver. The deposit is hosted by quartz-latite tuffs, flows, and flow breccias of the Burns Formation. Veins, up to 5 m wide follow steeply southeast and northwest dipping structures of the Eureka graben. Subsidiary veins up to 2 m wide branch off the main lode and are termed "flat veins" because of their conformable strike but shallow dip of 45&apos; to 50&apos; toward the northwest. Nearly a decade and a half after the US and China established formal diplomatic relations, and two decades after the two countries signed the Shanghai Communique and established commercial ties, the world, and perhaps China itself, has discovered that a wealth of natural mineral and energy resources lie beneath China&apos;s soil and directly off its coast. The country&apos;s coal reserves and oil and gas potential are well known. Its ferrous and nonferrous metal reserves are respectable and in a number of instances pre-eminent. According to 1981 Minerals Yearbook estimates - more often than not below those now being claimed by China - the country&apos;s aluminous metal reserves are about 907 Mt (1 billion st); iron ore reserves are 40 Gt (44 billion st); and copper reserves are about 46 Mt (54.4 million st) of contained metal. In addition, the country has about 10.7 Gt (11.8 billion st) of phosphate reserves, the fourth largest in the world, and 3 Gt (3.3 billion st) of pyrite. China&apos;s national Sixth Five Year Plan promulgated in late 1982 ended a stringent three-year retrenchment or readjustment period in which a number of major development projects involving foreign participation initiated in the late 1970s were shelved. The new Five Year Plan is a signal both within and outside of China that things are now moving again, and that major industrial and service sectors are receiving the kind of funding and flexibility they need for expansion, construction and modernization. The new plan&apos;s strategy for growth is measured and much less grandiose and frenetic than it was five years ago when China flung open its doors to foreign companies and invited participation in large-scale development projects. Now, the country&apos;s reticence to spend foreign exchange to purchase key equipment, technology, and services -a reaction to these projects and the spending they entailed - is clearly on the wane. In China&apos;s effort to quadruple its GNP by the year 2000, there is a new willingness to use some of its substantial foreign reserves. In fact, it is projected that 1983 will witness a $1.9 billion deficit, with a $2-3 billion deficit in 1984 and 1985. The following article discusses implications the Sixth Five-Year Plan has for nonferrous metal development in China. It is the first in a series of three articles on Chinese mineral resource development to be published in Mining Engineering over the next few months. The second article will identify specific nonferrous projects underway, while the third in the series will focus on trade and development opportunities for phosphate and potash producers in China. China&apos;s Ambitious Plans In the last few months, the exploitation of China&apos;s nonferrous resources and development of its industrial processing capabilities have begun to receive increasing attention on both provincial and central levels. Unlike the earlier modernization drive of 1978 when China&apos;s ferrous sector - best typified in the Baoshan iron and steel project - got the lion&apos;s share of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry&apos;s (MMI) energy and resources, it now appears that in some respects the nonferrous and industrial sectors are finally moving out from beneath the dominating shadow of ferrous and getting their own day in the sun. Separation of Nonferrous from Ferrous One clear demonstration of this is the establishment in April 1983 of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation (CNFMIC). The corporation is composed of 819 enterprises with over a million workers, and also includes 12 nonferrous metal construction companies, eight design institutes, and three prospecting companies. Of ministerial rank, CNFMIC is responsible for the development of both the country&apos;s nonferrous resources and its processing facilities. Although closely tied to the parent ministry from which it sprang (i.e. MMI), CNFMIC, at least theoretically, is separate and independent from it. One strong indication that this independence is, or soon will become a reality, can be seen from the fact that the new corporation is not headed by the former MMI officials, not even those who made up the ministry&apos;s now defunct nonferrous bureau. Instead, its president Qiu Chunfu is formerly of the State Economic Commission and the China International Trust and Investment Corp. This paper describes the results of an underground coal mine trial installation of a shielded trailing cable. The cable was a three conductor, round, type SHC-GC, and was installed on a shuttle car in a conventional room and pillar mining section. The purpose of presenting the information is to prepare mine operators for proposed legislation that will require shielding on low-voltage trailing cables. Specifically, machine modifications are required to cable reels, packing glands, and couplers. Cable splicing is not as complex as expected but additional materials are needed in the kit and splice training is necessary. Even though shielding will cause some problems for the mine operator, it can reduce the hazard of electrical shock to mine workers. This paper will present information that mine operators can use to solve most of the problems that will be encountered if they are required to install shielded cables. The in-mine evaluation was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines.

The operation described in-this paper will be confined to the Nemacolin Mine of The Buckeye Coal company, Nemacolin, Pennsylvania.&apos; This mine is-located on the Monongahela River approximately sixty miles south of Pittsburgh. The mining is in the Pittsburgh seam that has an average thickness of 88 to 90 inches. The current practice is to mine approximately 80 inches, leaving 8 to 10 inches of roof coal. All of the coal produced is used solely for by-product coking by the parent Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company, Youngstown, Ohio. Eight to ten inches of top coal are left by the miners to prevent air slacking of the draw slate. In addition, this top coal which will float at the washing gravity has a very high ash and sulphur content, and when mined, seriously affects the quality of the clean coal product.

"Mining makes civilization possible. It also creates socio-environmental liabilities forcing us to ask how much more of this mining can our planet support. It is clear that the future of mining differs from mining in the future. The laws of nature are being compromised by mining. This paper studies the problems at the core of the mining business which need to be addressed. What kind of mining will serve our existence with nature on this planet? What kind of mining perspectives are we able to formulate without having negative effects for future generations? Is mining technologically sustainable? The values of predictions, imagination, and creativity must be integrated to define what mining should be. Those values should be in the technologies necessary to restoring equilibrium of nature (Geomimic) as well as in complete extraction of metals, better utilization of the mineral reserves, and design the usage of metals to recycle. The purpose of this research is to examine many views and perspectives for future generations and to accelerate the pace of innovation of having mining without socio-environmental liabilities by design and by understanding nature. INTRODUCTION The future of mining is being stifled by many antiquated and stagnant attitudes and policies by the industry and society as a whole. The time is now or never for real action and education against these attitudes and to upgrade them to meet the current needs of this planet if we are to survive. Doing this will prove that we understand and respect nature for us and our posterity. It will also show a positive assessment that the mining process can be reversed before the point of no return. And that is to say, only if reversibility is still an option. It may not be anymore but it’s worth a try. We need to use our imagination and engineering know-how to come up with new proposals to change the core of mining. It would entail re-engineering. There is a profound difference between the future of mining and mining in the future. The future of mining is the continuation and persistence of past practices in the industry and expecting new results. Mining in the future requires a paradigm shift for extraction through modern thinking about mining as it pertains nature. The new paradigm for mining in the future would restore equilibrium with nature. Always keep in mind the connection of mining to nature. What is the future of nature? To predict mining in the future we need to use past experiences in mining and our knowledge of modern science and engineering to formulate a prototype that will enhance mining while maintaining equilibrium with nature. Mining and protecting nature are not mutually exclusive. This new prototype has nothing to do with the level of bonding or insurance that the mining industry can legally provide. The goal of this paper is to contribute some new ideas to help transform the mining industry based on the laws of nature and its limitations. Using this new prototype we will develop the following 1. Extraction of minerals Reserves-Dimensions-Technologies 2. Usage of mineral resources-Manufacture’s products designed to be reused and recycled 3. Mine planning, economic feasibility, and resource recovery activities by Getty Coal Company utilize a multi-faceted approach by necessity when evaluating Utah properties. The Bolivar Cu-Zn skarn deposit in the Piedras Verdes mining district of Chihuahua is one of many base and precious metal deposits in the north-northwest trending Sierra Madre Belt extending across the states of Chihuahua, Durango and Sonora in northwestern Mexico. The information presented here is drawn from two papers on the Bolivar property1,4 plus new information. Historical mining and exploration for polymetallic Cu-Zn-Pb-Ag-Au deposits in the Sierra Madre Belt dates to Spanish Colonial days. Access to the Bolivar Property (Figure 1) is by paved road (approximately 305 km southwest from Chihuahua) and approximately 80 km by all-season gravel roads to the villages of Cieneguita (population ~1,000) and Piedras Verdes (population ~500) adjacent to the property. [ ] The Bolivar property comprises an old Cu-Zn producer (the Bolivar Mine), exploration concessions adjacent to the Bolivar Mine, and a new camp at the mine that supports mining, exploration and maintenance. From 1980 to 2000, former operators extracted approximately 300,000 tonnes of ore that was hand sorted to an average grade of 5-6% Cu and 25-30% Zn. From 2005-2010, Dia Bras produced from the mine just over 600,000 tonnes at an average grade of 1.7% Cu and 8.6% Zn. Dia Bras transported mineralized rock 275 km by truck and rail to its Malpaso mill, located about 30 km west of Cuauhtémoc in central Chihuahua, from 2005 until October 2011 when the new Piedras Verde mill was commissioned only 5 km from the mine. (Note: the Company cannot use the term ?ore? because it has never completed a feasibility study.)

Removal of particulates and/or metal ions from mineral/coal processing waste water is a necessity from the environmental point of view. This paper describes application of a novel AC- electrocoagulation technique to remove the particulates as well as metal ions using AC power. A series of laboratory tests conducted on a stable black water sample obtained from a sub-bitminous coal operation provided a clear supernatant (-10 NTU) from the suspension. The process also shows promise in removal of up to 90 percent of phosphate ions and other metal ions (copper and nickel) from solution. A preliminary economic evaluation of the process will also be included.

For a state whose roots are in mining, most Colorado residents probably do not realize that the industry still contributes heavily to the state’s economy. In 2005, the industry contributed, directly and indirectly, about $8 billion to the state’s economy, according to the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). It employed nearly 10,000 people at mines and support businesses. And the mining industry in Colorado is one of the highest paying occupations in the state, averaging about $80,000 a year in wages and benefits. The state’s coal mining industry produced nearly 36 Mt (40 million st) of coal in 2005, valued at $800 million, the CMA said. That was seventh in the nation. And Colorado’s only major gold mine produced 10.2 t (329,000 oz) last year, valued at $124 million. That was third in the nation. And Phelps Dodge’s Henderson Mine produced about 12.7 kt (28 million lbs) of molybdenum, valued at $350 million. Colorado is the largest molybdenum producing state in the nation.

The Riverside Badlands Tunnel segment of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Inland Feeder Project, was lined with a segmented concrete primary lining and a welded steel final lining with the annulus filled with Low-Density Cellular Concrete (really a grout). The paper describes a numerical modeling technique that was developed to determine safe grout placement procedures to avoid pipe flotation, and shows the relationship between flotation and the rheology of the liquid grout. Design details of the steel liners are often not well suited to grout placement, and recommendations are given on how to improve this.

Economic operation of a mine ventilation system must include some means by which operating costs can be quantified and evaluated periodically. Current practice at most mines relies upon the best judgement of foremen, engineers and managers to identify high cost or problem areas in the system and to estimate potential costs and benefits of work proposed to reduce inefficiencies. The problem with this is that significant savings can be overlooked or sub-economic projects may be undertaken when sufficient attention is not paid to the interrelationship between airflow characteristics and corporate financial criteria. In order to accurately determine costs and benefits it is necessary to view the solution of each potential ventilation problem as a separate economic opportunity.

The effects of certain variables on the extraction of gold by thioureation have been investigated on a quartzose gold-bearing ore using a statistical multifactorial strategy. The factors taken into consideration were milling time (which corresponds to a given grain size), oxidant concentration, thiourea concentration and liquid/solid ratio. The influence of these four variables was ascertained first by a full factorial design at two levels for each variable (16 runs). This permitted the estimation of first-order effects of the factors affecting the process. Then 9 runs were added whose levels were both in the centre of and outside the axes of the previous plan thus originating a central composite design. This permitted estimation both of second-order effects of the factors involved and of parameters of a second-order polynomial model. The results show that extraction of gold depends only on milling time and oxidant concentration, at least in the experimental range considered. The equation fitting experimental data, as calculated by the least squares method, allows a response surface to be drawn.
