Two SAIMM colloquia The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is organizing two one-day colloquia in the State Pavilion, Milner Park showgrounds, Johannesburg, to coincide with the Electra Mining Exhibition on 16th and 17th September. Over a million rands worth of equipment will be on display, the Electra Mining Exhibition being rated among the four or five largest in the world. The 1978 Electra Mining Exhibition was attended by 24 000 visitors. "Project Management in the Metallurgical Industry", "Mine Fires" APCOM International Conference by H. W. GLEN The 17th APCOM Conference (under the auspices of the Council for the Application of Computers and Mathematics in the Mineral Industries) was to have been held in Moscow during the last week in October. South Africans have always given enthusiastic support to the APCOM series of meetings, since their inception in 1961. The conference was held in the Republic in 1972.

This concept offers prospects of development that must make our previous achievements seem equivalent only to the first act in a drama enacted on the stage of Southern Africa. I hope to illustrate how, in Act Two, chemistry will play a dominant role, and chemists and chemical engineers will be among the principal actors.

On 14th April, 1980, 76 delegates from industry, universities, and research laboratories gathered at the University of the Witwatersrand to attend the Pyrometallurgy Vacation School. Professor H. B. Bell, Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy at the University of Strathclyde, Scotland, was there to lead the School, along with 12 local lecturers, who had gathered at the Hotel Devonshire at 07h30 for an Authors' Breakfast. Brigadier R. S. G. Stokes of Sherborne, Dorset, is the oldest surviving member of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He joined in 1904 and has been a member for 77 years. Professor R. N. Pryor, AR.S.M., B.8c., C.Eng., F.I.C.E., F.I.Min.E., F.I.M.M., who died on 14th July, 1979, after a short illness, was President of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy for the session 1978-1979. Weld pool metallurgy A high level of current interest in welding characteristics and behaviour and in the properties of welds was amply demonstrated by the large attendance at The Welding Institute's 1978 Conference on 'Trends in Steels and Consumables for Welding' and by the overwhelming number of papers offered for the International Conference on 'Arc Physics and Weld Pool Behaviour' in May 1979. Mine ventilation The First International Mine Ventilation Congress was held in September, 1975, in Johannesburg, South Africa, at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was organized by the Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa. Occupational accidents and diseases The IXth World Congress on the Prevention of Occupational Accidents and Diseases will be held in Amsterdam from 6th to 9th May, 1980. Rock mechanics The 21st U.S. Symposium on Rock Mechanics is to be held at Rolla, Missouri, from 27th to 30th May, 1980. Protection against noise An International Symposium on the Protection of Workers Against Noisewill be held in Dresden (German Democratic Republic) from 27th to 30th November, 1979. Management of mineral resources A joint meeting of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME, and the Metallurgical Society of AIME is to be held in London from 27th to 30th May, 1980. INFACON 80 During 1970 various South African institutes and associations agreed to organize an international ferroalloys congress. It was recommended that this should be made a continuing forum, where ferroalloy people could meet and discuss matters of mutal interest.

The paper reviews the effects of fast-neutron irradiation on the tensile properties of austenitic stainless steels at irradiation temperatures of less than 400°C, using, as an example, work carried out at Pelindaba on an AISI 316 type steel produced in South Africa. Damage produced in these steels at higher irradiation temperatures and fluences is also briefly discussed. The paper concludes with a discussion of some methods of overcoming or decreasing the effects of irradiation damage.

Eschenburg by briefly outlining his past career and achievements, and, in calling upon him to take the Chair, wished him a very successful year of office..... Address by the President of the S.A.I.M.M. The Chairman introduced Mr Von Wielligh by outlining his career and achievements. After completing his education, he joined J.C.I. in 1936 as a sampler, and from that time served the company in many capacities, culminating with his appointment to the Board in 1974.....

The results of trials with three stope-face cleaning systems are described. Two of these systems were based on armoured chain conveyors, and the third on a reciprocating-flight conveyor. The operational elements of each system are discussed with reference to their effectiveness, and many problems are highlighted. It is concluded that the reciprocating-flight conveyor is superior, and has the potential for being developed into a system yielding a labour productivity of more than 30 m2 per worker per month and a face advance of 15 m per month working one shift a day.

The Gold Medal of the Institution for Mining and Metallurgy for 1978 was awarded to Adriaan Louw at the Annual General Meeting of that Institution in London on 17th May, 1979. The award was made for distinguished services to the mining industry in South Africa.

Union Corporation are experimenting with a high-pressure water jet to remove blasted rock from short panels. The advantages are that the jet provides a highly efficient, flexible, and mobile cleaning tool that eliminates much of the lashing. Cost estimates show it to compare favourably with the existing system, with potential savings of 30 cents per ton milled. Equipment and method trials are continuing with the ultimate objective of eliminating hand lashing entirely while retaining the flexibility of the present method of mining.

While coal can be used as a chemical feedstock instead of oil for the production of the petrochemical based commodities that are so important to our modern way of life, the impact that coal is going to make on the world-energy scene is without doubt its more important role in the short- to medium-term. After inflation, energy is probably today's most talked-about and controversial economic issue. It is a plentiful supply of energy that has permitted each of us to live a life of convenience that is matched only by the most fortunate of the aristocracy in history.

The rate of reaction between different carbonaceous reducing agents and silicon monoxide gas was studied by the use of a technique developed in Norway by Tuset and Raaness. Argon carrier gas was used to pass a known fixed concentration of silicon monoxide gas through an I1 cm3 sample of precalcined reducing agent at 1650°c. Silicon monoxide gas was generated by the heating of a mixture of silica and silicon carbide, and the progress of the reaction was followed by monitoring the carbon monoxide in the off-gas with an infrared spectrometer. The reactivity of silicon monoxide gas towards a number of carbonaceous reducing agents (charcoal, Iscor coke, Lurgi char, and petroleum coke) was shown to be similar to results obtained with the carbon dioxide reactivity test. The silicon monoxide reactivity test was able to indicate the extent to which fines were generated when the reducing agent was converted to silicon carbide. Of the reducing agents studied, Lurgi char appeared to be the most suitable for the production of ferrosilicon because it has a high reactivity towards silicon monoxide gas and high strength when converted to silicon carbide. So that industry could be given some indication of the suitability of certain reducing agents for the production of ferrosilicon and silicon metal, a reactivity scale similar to that of Tuset and Raaness was constructed that compares the volume of silicon monoxide gas required by a reducing agent to reach a carbon monoxide content of 10 per cent in the off-gas during the conversion of the reducing agent to silicon carbide. This scale assists in the selection of those reducing agents that require less silicon monoxide gas for conversion to silicon carbide, and that give savings in material and power costs because less silicon monoxide gas need be generated in the furnace.

An account is given of developments in the use of activated carbon for the recovery of gold from cyanide solutions. The carbon-In-pulp process employed at the Homestake Mine is described, and its various applications in South Africa and their effectiveness are discussed. Probable future work on the carbon-in-pulp process and other possible applications of carbon for the recovery of gold are outlined.

Improvements in the drilling and blasting techniques used in the stopes of narrow reefs have caused the clearing of broken rock to become the major cause of delay in the achievement of a regular cyclic operation. This paper discusses the development of a scoop in accordance with a predetermined set of performance parameters. The test results obtained to date have shown that the basic objectives have been achieved within tolerable limits of variation.
