Synopsis The colour changes effected in a solution of dithizone by trace amounts of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization provide a sensitive field test for these metals. The method has been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to trace zinc orebodies under residual soils. The dithizone test is used here on samples of non-residual soil overlying a gold-bearing zone in which the gold is associated with disseminated sphalerite, galena, and chalco-pyrite. A gold-bearing zone was successfully traced under overburden ranging from a few inches to five feet in depth by means of this method. The method may prove useful in guiding preliminary trenching through light overburden, by outlining the extent of copper, lead, and zinc mineralization. Introduction The dithizone test affords a rapid, simple, and delicate test for the presence of zinc in soil and water and is suitable for use under field conditions. It has recently been used with success by the United States Geological Survey to outline a zinc-rich area in the residual soil over a primary zinc deposit in Tennessee. The purpose of the present study was to ascertain whether the method could be used to trace a gold-bearing zone, containing associated zinc mineralization, under shallow, non-residual, glacial overburden. The results obtained indicate that the method can be used to guide preliminary trenching in overburden up to six feet in depth. Tests made of the water near lake-shore outcrops also indicate that favourable prospecting zones may be located from the water, within five feet of the shore. It is felt that this simple field test should find a wider use in prospecting, because, under certain conditions, it can outline favourable zones and thereby reduce the amount of blind trenching necessary. The following pages describe the type of deposit tested, the method used, the .results obtained, and the difficulties encountered by a novice in the use of this chemical procedure. As a growing mining company, ERAMET is looking for new positions on the strategic metals market. In this context, the Gabonese Maboumine pyrochlore deposit is currently being studied for the recovery of niobium, tantalum, rare earth elements (REE), and uranium. This ore shows mineralogical and chemical characteristics that make it challenging to process by already known practices, from both technical and economic points of view. In this context, ERAMET has developed since 2008 an innovative hydrometallurgical process which has been successfully operated at a pilot plant scale. While the upstream part of the process aims to dissolve the valuable elements in sulphuric acid, the downstream part of the process aims to recover them separately in a marketable form. The focus here will be on the recovery of the REE. The ore deposit contains approximately 1.4% of REE including 87% of light REE and 13% of medium-heavy REE. The challenge in this process lies in the fact that the major elements in the matrix are iron and aluminum. An innovative process has been developed in order to recover all of the REE in these unfavourable conditions, described in this paper.

"The ungraded-fibre mill is located at the mine site and has a rated capacity of 6,600 tons of ore input and 1,200 tons of ung1•aded fib1 •e product per day. Power for operation is obtained from a diesel generating plant located on the site, which has a capacity of 5,300 kW. The preliminary milling process consists of prima1•y and secondary crushing, drying and temporary storage of plus-1 1h -in. material. The final milling processes are two stages of crushing and three stages of screening, with air-lift separation of the fibre from the host rock. The central mill building also houses a machine shop, mill maintenance shops, a mobile equipment overhaul shop, an engine and majo1•-component overhaul shop, and a warehouse. Major changes to the milling ci1•cuits since start-up have been the addition of a larger secondary cone crusher, ct third dryer, adding a rotary distributor to the feed of the screening section and adding an automatic start-up sequence for all equipment except crushers and fans. The operation of the mill is coordinated from a central control room, where a ""mimic"" panel indicates the operation of all major units in both the ore preparation and the screening sections. Product quality is controlled by continuous sampling and frequent labo1•atory analysis, which provide data fm• the adjustment of aspirating hoods and mill feed rate. "Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

The new electrolytic copper refinery situated at Copper Cliff, Ontario, has been in operation for over a year and a half. This plant is operated by the Ontario Refining Company, Limited. The associated companies behind the enterprise are the International Nickel ?company of Canada, Limited, the American Metals Company, Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, and Ventures, Limited. The plant was an outgrowth of the rapid development of copper resources in the nickel-copper ores of the Frood and other great mines in the Sudbury district, and of the desire to have all primary production units grouped together as compactly as possible. Starting anode furnace operations in June, 1930, and electrolytic refining on July 1st of that year, after a record-breaking construction programme completed in only fifteen months, the plant soon settled into its stride and the usual starting-up difficulties were .rapidly overcome. The rated capacity of the plant, namely, twenty million pounds of refined copper per month, has, of course, never been reached, due to depressed business conditions and latterly to the world copper agreement limiting production. It may be said, however, that the present installation has proved its ability to produce in excess of its rated capacity, and with relatively minor additions to plant and equipment that capacity can be doubled. Owing to the severity of the winters, when temperatures of from 20 to 40 degrees below zero are to be expected, the building of this refinery involved a number of problems in insulation, layout, ventilation, etc., which were rather unusual in copper-refinery construction.

The mining sequence at Noranda’s Bell- Allard mine calls for two mining fronts retreating toward a central pillar known as the Retreat Zone between pyramids A and C. It is clear from numerical modelling and rock mass characterization that the induced stress level in the pillar will exceed the rock mass capacity. A mining plan was developed including the redimensioning of stopes in the Retreat Zone, additional ground support and instrumentation in order to ensure the safety of the workforce and to maximize ore recovery while minimizing production delays. The mining strategy consists in allowing the rock mass to fracture and fail progressively while maintaining control of the existing openings with the appropriate support. A systematic analysis of rockbursting and caving hazards was conducted for all accesses and stopes in order to plan ground support and instrumentation needs.

"The Cyprus Anvil Mining Corporation established a lead-zinc mine and concentrating plant at Faro in Yukon Territory in 1969. Following some 12 years of continuous operation from a single pit adjacent to the concentrator, the company decided to expand operations into two additional areas on the Vangorda Plateau. The two new deposits, known as Grum and Vangorda, are located some 15 kilometres from the existing concentrator.Confirmation of mining feasibility was followed by determination of the most practical and economical method of transporting the raw ore from the new mine sites to the existing concentrator. This analysis was carried out in two phases. The first phase reviewed the feasibility of alternative transportation systems on an 'order-of-magnitude' cost basis. This work identified systems worthy of more detailed examination. The second phase examined the preferred alternatives in greater detail.Initially, operating principles and parameters were established and catalogued. Then, based on these criteria, complete systems were developed utilizing alternative modes of transportation . In the overview analysis, some transportation modes were judged impractical and discarded, 'order-o f-magnitude' costs were developed for other systems and the most costly were eliminated . In the detailed study, the favourable systems were examined in depth which required development of accurate capital and operating costs, consideration of environ- mental impacts and an assessment of intangibles associated with the operation of a new development."

"There is currently very little information on the physico-chemical properties of rare earth elementbearing minerals, or on their processing. With the increasing demand for rare earths, this is something that needs to be addressed. This paper introduces some surface chemistry analysis of fergusonite (YNbO4), and the bubble-particle attachment. Zeta potential measurements indicate adsorption of sodium oleate and, to a lesser degree, potassium amyl xanthate onto the surface, and an increase in attachment to an air bubble is observed at pH 4.5 and 6.5. At a pH of 10.5, no attachment is observed, whether in the presence of the reagents or not. This analysis, although initial, will be used to initiate flotation tests, in order to facilitate the selective recovery of fergusonite. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) are increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. An article in the New Scientist highlighted the importance of a number of REE, many of which most people are be unlikely to have heard mentioned (Crow, 2011). From batteries (lanthanum and cerium) to magnets (dysprosium and neodymium) and lighting (yttrium), the REE are crucial to the advancement of technology and energy saving devices. For example, neodymium is finding most use in the high end magnets that keep the motors turning that power wind turbines and electric cars. In the case of yttrium, the demand outstripped the supply in 2010, emphasising the need to develop deposits containing this and other REE (Crow, 2011). The impact of our dependency on REE has become even more apparent with the reduction in exports by China, which currently controls 97 % of the world’s rare earth production (Pitts, 2011).With the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE), there is a drive to exploit the known resources around the world. However, the physical beneficiation of the rare earth element bearing minerals is a subject which will require a great deal of investigation to fill the knowledge gaps surrounding these developing rare earth projects. There are numerous articles on REE mineralogy as well as the hydrometallurgical processing of REE concentrates (Alex, Suri, & Gupta, 1998; Peter Gromet & Silver, 1983; Ring et al., 1993; Schnetzler & Philpotts, 1970; Uda, 2000), however a common feature amongst these resources is the lack of detailed descriptions of the physical beneficiation processes required to concentrate REE-bearing minerals. There is work being conducted into reagents and methods for use in recovering some rare earths from their associated ores (Bulatovic, 2010; Ni, Parrent, Cao, & Liu, 2011), but much more in-depth research is required."

Newcrest Mining Limited, originally as Lihir Gold, has operated a pressure oxidation plant for the recovery of gold from refractory ore since 1997. The mine and gold plant are located on Lihir Island in Papua New Guinea. Design of the original pressure oxidation circuit was based on the results of pilot plant tests conducted by Sherritt in Fort Saskatchewan. Following a decision to expand the plant in 2008, Lihir Gold contracted Sherritt to design a new autoclave. The design exercise utilized the original pilot plant test results, commercial process results at Lihir, and an understanding of advances in autoclave technology since the original plant was built. The new Lihir autoclave will be the largest horizontal, multiple-compartment autoclave in the world. The design process for the pressure oxidation expansion is described in this paper.

"Waelz oxide from steel mill dust recycling is usually sold to the primary zinc industry, where it is first charged to the roasters to eliminate the remaining fluorides and chlorides. This limits the overall amount of secondary materials which can be used because of different operating problems in the roasters. Another option, in the case where the halides are low, would be direct leaching with low or medium concentrated sulphuric acid. Unfortunately, because of the carryover of some steel mill dust, iron is also present in the Waelz oxide, reaching contents up to 5 wt.%. Since the objective is to treat the solution more or less directly by electrowinning, with only a few simple preliminary purification steps, iron in the solution is a very important factor. Various trials have been done to investigate the dissolution behavior of the iron contained in the Waelz oxide. Although the zinc extraction should reach a maximum, all other elements, especially iron, should be low. This paper describes the results of our research in this area and offers possible options for Waelz oxide utilization. There is also a focus on how other elements, present in the material, influence the dissolution behaviour of zinc and iron, and whether a loss of zinc is unavoidable, if low iron dissolution is required.INTRODUCTION One of the most important secondary zinc resources is the zinc oxide originating from steel mill dust recycling. For the treatment of high zinc containing steel mill dusts, the Waelz kiln process is the so called “best available technology” and it dominates the industry, with roughly a 90% market share. The product Waelz oxide contains mostly zinc oxide, but it also contains lead compounds and halides due to evaporation with the zinc. In addition, it contains iron and some slag compounds due to mechanical carry-over. The presence of halides limits the use of the material as an alternative concentrate for primary zinc electrowinning. Such halides can be reduced to a certain extent by washing and/or solvent extraction (see following chapter). Although lead is not troublesome and theoretically represents a second recoverable valuable metal, iron is unwanted and causes additional problems during leaching. Even though Waelz oxide is generally a highly welcome input material in primary zinc metallurgy, due to its high zinc content, it still contains halides, and in the majority of cases, the oxide must first be treated in a roasting process. Different circumstances, like accretion formation because of the lead and halogen compounds as well as unwanted cooling effects in the roaster, limit the amount of Waelz oxide which can be substituted for the primary concentrate. Another, even more limiting factor, is the allowable concentrations of chlorides and fluorides in zinc electrowinning, the last step in the primary zinc processing route (Ruetten, 2011)."

"IntroductionThe Kitsault molybdenum mine is located 600 m above sea level on Lime Creek at the head of the inlet of Alice Arm, 140 km northeast of Prince Rupert, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area of the mine is characterized by rugged topography and deeply incised creeks which drain into the Portland Canal - Observatory Inlet fjord system. Access is by air service or boat from Prince Rupert, or by secondary road from Terrace.HistoryThe deposit was first staked in 1911, at which time the main feature of interest was a polymetallic vein with values in silver located southeast of the molybdenum deposit (Woodcock and Carter, 1976). Turnbull (1916) was the first to describe the extensive zone of crisscross quartz stringers with Mo~ on the banks of Lime Creek which, although it clearly had the potential to contain a major deposit, was not then believed to be of commercial value.Following sporadic work through the 1920s and early 1930s, the ground lay idle unti11959 when Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. commenced a program of systematic diamond drilling on the stockwork-type mineralization adjacent to Lime Creek. In late 1964, Kennco announced the presence of an orebody of 36 million tonnes averaging 0.230Jo Mo~ which was to be put into production at a rate of 5450 tonnes per day under a new subsidiary, British Columbia Molybdenum Ltd., at a forecasted capital cost of $20 million (revised to $30 million).Between January 1968 and April 1972, 10.4 million kg of molybdenum were produced from 9.3 million tonnes of ore, at an average mill recovery of 90%, and with an average mill head grade of 0.206% Mo~. The ore was mined in an open pit with a waste to ore stip ratio of 1.5 to 1. The. operation was terminated in 1972 due to weak molybdenum prices and escalating costs.In May 1973, the deposit was purchased by Climax Molybdenum Corporation of British Columbia, Limited and in 1979 transferred to affiliate Amax of Canada Limited. In early 1979, following completion of detailed feasibility studies, Arnax commenced construction of the 10 900 tonne per day Kitsault mine and mill complex based on a mineable open pit reserve of 95 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.192% Mo~, sufficient for a mine life of 25 years. The original capital cost estimate was $143 million; it subsequently escalated to approximately $200 million."

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. Load Haul Dump vehicles (LHD) are extensively used in underground mining however equipment design and operating conditions contribute to restricted operator?s visibility. The inability to clearly see people, objects or hazards around the machine has contributed to a number of accidents including fatal injuries. In order to identify vehicle design characteristics resulting in restricted and blocked sightlines visibility assessments are traditionally completed in the field. However, field methods are unable to evaluate visibility under dynamic operating conditions and are limited in their ability to provide feedback on the impact of various operator characteristics such as sitting height, for example. Results of this research show computer simulation and virtual reality can be successfully used to evaluate visibility during the operation of LHD vehicles. In order to benefit from virtual reality applications the work environment, LHD vehicle and human posture need to be represented as accurately as possible. A computer simulation program with ergonomic ana lysis features, Classic JACK 3.1, was successfully used. Threedimensional CAD models of LHD vehicles were developed from manufacturer specifications and pictur es taken from LHD vehicles currently in use. The LHD models were imported into the JACK environment, a digital human was positioned in the cab of the LHD vehicle and the vehicle and human where driven over a typical mine route. Real-time feedback in the JACK program was used to identify what the operator could see under different operating conditions. Machine characteristics and operating scenarios resulting in impaired visibility were successfully identified with this method. The JACK program can also provide real-time feedback on the human?s joint forces and torques, strength requirements, postural comfort, and metabolic energy expenditure. As a result, this method could be used to successfully evaluate musculoskeletal injury risk factors along with system design recommendations to improve workplace safety and productivity in any setting. The LHD VRML files imported into JACK have also been combined with environment files into other VR software packages (e.g. Maverik) to view in a VRL facility, managed by MIRARCO at Laurentian University. The VR models using these packages can be viewed in stereo to provide better appreciation of spatial visibility issues.

"Since there was no representative from Wesfrob Mines Limited, the information on their infra-red concentrate drying operation, which had been prepared by Mr. K. Blower, was presented by Mr, Dorland. Mr. Blower, in submitting the information, emphasized that their objectives in this operation were (a) to guarantee less than 90%, of flow-moisture in their copper concentrates and thus satisfy marine shipping regulation• and (b) to minimize capital costs, The infra-red dryers have satisfied these objectives.To control final moisture in the copper concentrate, current practice is to preheat the filter cake with steam in the disc filter hood and then conveyor-0r7 the concentrate with infra-red calrod heaters. The application of steam aids the system as follows:1) Improves vacuum pump efficiency.2) Lowers viscosity of filtrate (increased temperature},3) Preheats the cake prior to radiant heating. (150°F)The hot cake discharging from the filter ranges from 10.6 to 10.9% moisture. After radiant heating the moisture level is reduced to 8.5% - 9.7% depending on production rate. Further moisture loss occurs during conveying and transferring to the stockpile for a final shipment moisture ranging from 8.1% to 9.5%. "While methods exist to allow the simulation and optimization of existing flotation operations, there is a deficit in the ability to predict the performance of a new ore type pre-processing. A laboratory scale batch flotation testing methodology has been developed to assess the flotation potential of ores (known as the JK Floatability Index or JKFI). Previous work conducted by Alexander and Collins (2008) showed that the test could be used to predict full scale results in base metal ores. In this work, JKFI tests were applied to three different types of ore and one blend from a greenfields gold deposit to show the test applicability to flotation of precious metals. The results from the JKFI test on one ore type were then used to predict the response of all ore types (including the blend). To validate the predicted kinetic parameters, a comprehensive survey was performed on a pilot plant where each of ore types was processed in the circuit. An acceptable agreement was found between the experimental recoveries and predicted recoveries which indicate the potential of this method for use in predicting the flotation response of an ore.INTRODUCTIONOver 100 years, flotation has been considered an efficient method to concentrate different types of sulphide and oxide minerals and coal. Thus, numerous research studies have been undertaken to find an appropriate model to predict the behaviour of particles in flotation circuits (Barnwal et. al., 2006; Bascur and Herbst, 1983; Cecile and Villeneuve, 1991; Deng et. al., 1996; Zheng et. al., 2006). Most methods are based on the ore flotation response in an industrial plant which is expensive and time consuming to characterise. It is difficult to reliably predict flotation response for new types of ores in industrial scale plants.The floatability component modelling (FCM) approach, developed within the Australian Minerals Industry Research Association (AMIRA) P9 project, has been used to derive models of operating flotation plants for the purpose of simulation and optimisation (Alexander and Morrison, 1998; Alexander et. al., 2000; Varadi, 2006). This approach has been applied at a large number of operating sites treating a wide variety of ores. The approach requires metallurgical surveys to be undertaken in conjunction with batch flotation tests and cell characterisation. This allows ore and machine parameters to be derived, which are then used in the P9 Flotation Model. The development of a FCM generally requires a large commitment of resources and time. While there has been significant support of this approach in industry, the FCM approach is limited to ores already being processed (Runge, 2004; Wightman, 2006)."

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. Fuel cells have tremendous potential as power sources but much fundamental research is still required. One key component of the research is the experimental set-up used. In particular, the placement of the reference electrode is extremely significant in measuring the half-cell overpotential of solid oxide fuel cells, since differences in area, misalignments, and also differences in the kinetics of the working and counter electrodes can cause both scaling errors and frequency distortions of the measured impedance. The impedance of thin solid electrolyte cells of different electrode geometries has been calculated using the finite element method and the results compared to experimental values obtained for the oxygen reduction reaction on platinum.

In this work we present a novel level set-based model for the real-time simulation of soil deformations. A level set defined by a signed distance function and sampled in a regular 3D grid represents and tracks the soil volume under deformation. Moving away from classical 2.5D heightfield representations of soil to a full 3D volume representation allows for improved tracking of cutting tool operations and the simulation of near-vertical or vertical soil faces. The proposed level set representation furthermore provides a versatile mathematical platform for modeling additional effects such as soil slip, and does not suffer from the sampling limitations of commonly used heightfields. Cutting forces applied to the tool are simulated via a formulation based on the Fundamental Equation of Earthmoving, modified to support inclined soil surfaces and transient states of tool motion. Discretisation of this 2D cutting force model with respect to the tool surface allows capturing the effects of irregular 3D terrain shapes on blades and buckets. The surcharge created during cutting operations is tracked in the form of particles and included in the soil failure force computation. We make use of an adaptive, hybrid level set-based and particle-based soil deformation scheme, which allows the soil deformation to be simulated in real-time.

The Hitachi refinery of Nikko Smelting & Refining Co. Ltd. began its electrolytic copper refining operations in 1911. In December 2002, the refinery changed its operation scheme by introducing the ISA permanent cathode technology for the first time in Japan. The change resulted in higher productivity, better cathode quality, and lower operational costs. The operation has been continuously improved to reach a 20% higher production capacity than the original one. For the electrolyte purification process, the Hitachi refinery has developed a new process for removing impurities. The process involves As, Sb and Bi adsorption from the electrolyte by means of chelating and ion exchange resin. The new resin process will achieve higher efficiency in removing impurity.
