Mining remains one of the key industries in Australia and many other countries with mineral wealth. In Australia, mining contributes 8.8 per cent to the countryÆs gross domestic product (McKay et al, 2000). In Queensland alone, mineral and petroleum industries contribute approximately $9.4 billion to the StatesÆ gross state product (2001/02) (Young, 2003). Increasing pressure on mining companies to perform in a global marketing environment requires mine management to consider more innovative ways to manage their resources û human, plant and equipment û which includes the gathering and analysis of operations data and information for improved decision making. For any mining operation utilising rubber tyred equipment such as trucks, front-end loaders and ancillary equipment, annual expenditure on tyres and related items can be significant. Even a small reduction in tyre operating costs can have a real effect on the business bottom line performance in the short term. Tyre Application Risk Management (TYREARMÖ) can provide substantial benefits in the long term across a number of KPIs not just through reduction in direct tyre expenditure but through flow-on improvements in safety, productivity and reduced environmental impacts. Several accidents involving tyres have also highlighted an increased need to consider the hazards and resultant risks arising from operations of rubber tyred mining fleets (Torlach and Johnston, 1990). This paper presents the process and results of achieving sustained safety and business improvement through the strategic alliance between an earthmover tyre management service provider, Klinge and Co (Klinge) and a BHP Billiton coal mine. The accompanying case study demonstrates in some detail the overall methodology, and the tools and technologies used where active management of data, its analysis and decisions taken have resulted in a 43 per cent improvement in tyre cost performance and a corresponding reduction in tyre-related downtime since the beginning of the alliance.

Rock bolting and rock-bolting systems depend for success on attention to a number of simple techniques. Failure to appreciate this fact can lead to disappointing results. Careful study of rock characteristics and placement methods can allow a change to highly successful rock bolt per- formance. The feed to the Cockle Creek Imperial Smelting Furnace consists of mixed Pb/Zn con- centrates and lead sulphate-containing elec- trolytic zinc plant residues. Roasting was investigated as a means of desulphurizing the feed to less than 1%. Mixed cobalt-nickel sulphides precipitated from ammoniacal process liquors derived from nickel sulphide concentrates, mattes, and reduced nickeliferous laterites have been characterized.The mixed sulphides are prone to oxidation on standing and are rapidly leached under relatively mild conditions. The kinetics of the leaching reactions are controlled principally by temperature and oxygen partial pressure. Although the samples have different CO:Ni ratios and have undergone varying degrees of oxidation, there is little difference in their leaching behaviour. The results suggest that a single plant would be able to process mixed sulphides of varying composition. Any copper and zinc present in the mixed sulphides as impurities also go into solution and must be removed prior to recovery of the cobalt and nickel in metallic form.

Good mining is central to any approach to value tracking. Good mining occurs where the ore is correctly delineated, measured and fed to the mill. This process is usually referred to as grade control, ore control or quality control. There are now ways to measure the efficiency of this process, such as by using conditional simulation, and a brief synopsis is presented. Resource estimation is the foundation of ore reserve estimation, which should enable useful prediction of the expected metal to be recovered from mining and milling. Significant improvements have resulted from applying new techniques such as the Chain of Mining (CoM) method, which models the mining process. Again, a brief synopsis is presented. Tracking value from the mine through the mill implies a linear sequence of processes that can be modelled. Reality is more complex and there are error components, feedback loops and breaks in the Chain of Value. Modelling the total production process in a number of operations is considered, including the various impacts on producing reconciliations. Procedures are also discussed for handling a number of difficult issues such as: different data supports, stockpiling strategies, blending from multiple ore sources, blast movement and underground ore extraction.

Sequencing of large underground firings is a critical aspect of blast performance. Using theory developed in open cut operations, where blast results are easier to quantify, a new technique for sequencing underground mass blasts has been developed. The basis for the technique is to identify timing regimes to control fragmentation and relief then apply non-electrics to fit these criteria. The use of computer software to graphically interpret delay statistics enables the evaluation of designs in a realistic manner.

Two ends of a longwall face are not only concentrated locations of equipment, but also provide ventilation and access. The roof strata stability here has an important influence on mining coal and safety. Based on field obser- vations in the gateways at Zaozhuang Colliery (Shandong Province) and model tests, the author developed a structural model of the overlying strata at the ends of the longwall face - the arc triangular cantilever plate - to which the elastic theory of plates can be applied. Factors influencing the stability of the cantilever plate and its breaking character- istics are discussed. Requirements and design parameters for supports at face ends are pro- posed, based on these factors.

The Sons of Gwalia Mine in Western Australia is situated about 140 miles north from Kalgoorlie in arid country, where supplies of fresh water are difficult to obtain.Mine salt water is used throughout the treatment plant, whilst fresh water for domestic, boiler, and power purposes is pumped from a number of shallow outlying wells. The waters from all wells are constant in character, although they vary in the quantities of salts contained.An average sample of mixed waters gave the following analysis (Gr. per gal.):Sodium chloride 70.82Magnesium chloride 33.03Calcium chloride 26.98Calcium carbonate .. 11.57Calcium sulphate 22.71Iron oxide and alumina 2.10Silica and insoluble 4.58When this water is used in the boilers in its natural state it is scale-forming and intensely corrosive.

In an environment of decreasing ore grade, increasing costs and uncertainty with respect to commodity prices, the industry could benefit from evaluating alternative technologies and innovative circuit configurations. The flexible circuit approach suggests that the design of grinding circuits can be adapted to changes in feed properties and economic conditions. Advances in modelling and simulation are enabling metallurgists to predict the performance of more complex circuit configurations with increased confidence. Ore variability information and processing costs may be used as modelling inputs to determine the optimum processing conditions at a given time. A case study has been completed demonstrating the value of combining a flexible circuit with a model-based optimisation of the process. Ore properties and equipment performance data obtained in operating plants have been used to model and simulate flexible circuit configurations.This paper explores strategies to introduce flexibility to existing circuit configurations when processing ores with high variability. Multicomponent models incorporated in the model developers’ kit (MDK) allow the simulation of more complex and flexible circuits. This capability enables demonstration of the potential to enhance metal production through adapting processing routes according to the ore type being processed. The simulation of different flow sheet configurations allowed the definition of the best option for maintaining the metal production when treating lower grade ores, highlighting the advantages of flexible circuit configurations compared with a one-process-fits-all approach.CITATION:Foggiatto, B, Hilden, M M and Powell, M S, 2014. Mine seismicity is one of the most difficult geotechnical risks to manage in seismically active mines. There are currently some established empirical and statistical methods that provide quantitative measures for seismic hazard assessment in operating mines. However, these methods are mostly suitable for quantifying the current or historical seismic hazard and often cannot be directly used to forecast the future hazards. Numerical modelling is the only analytical tool that can capture the level of complexities required for a meaningful analysis of mine seismicity and therefore to facilitate a reliable forecast of future hazards. However, there is currently no widely accepted and established guideline and methodology for analysing and forecasting mine seismicity using numerical modelling. This paper first provides a background on previous published studies on this subject and then outlines the key aspects that can affect the reliability of the forecasting for mine seismicity. These aspects include a) processing of historical seismic data, b) selection of suitable numerical modelling approach, c) Post-processing and interpretation of the model outputs. A case study is then presented for the Gwalia Deeps Mine where a new framework was developed to forecast future mine seismicity. High-quality seismic data for a period of five years was used for back-analysis and comparisons with the numerical modelling outputs. After development of the method, the future seismicity was forecast for the next 12 months and the actual seismicity was monitored against the forecast during this period. Results of this study shows promising potential for the proposed framework to be applied more routinely and at other mine sites. However, more validations are required at Gwalia Deeps mine as the mine proceeds to deeper levels. In addition, the method needs more improvements and should be tested and validated at other mining operations before it can be established as a proven method. The extreme conservationists see the responsibility as the total preservation of the natural environment achieved by opposition to all forms of industrial development that would disturb it. The `growth-at-any-price men' consider it more important to stimulate economic growth, develop new industries, and maximize profit letting the environment take care of itself: within this wide spectrum of concern are the middle-of- the-road men, part of the vast majority, fully aware of the need to compromise to achieve a satisfactory economic growth rate whilst pre- serving to the greatest extent practicable the con- ditions upon which we depend for a balanced self-perpetuating existence. Callide Coalfields produces a sub-bituminous, very subhydrous, low rank, steaming coal with good combustion properties, primarily for domestic power generation. Geological input into planning of coal extraction requires expedient production of detailed structural, lithological, analytical, geophysical and geotechnical data. The CSIRO-developed SIROLOG borehole logging software and hardware system allows for detailed spectrometric analysis of coal/interburden. The gamma-gamma and neutron-gamma SIROLOG techniques both provide improved prediction of ash content over other borehole techniques. The neutron-gamma technique also predicts density and some important ash constituents (especially iron, alumina and silica). The software/hardware configuration allows for quick, easy interpretation of coal seam depth and lithology, parting thickness and ash/ash constituent contents immediately after a borehole has been logged. Within certain mine areas in the Callide Basin, the iron content of mined coal is widely variable in both vertical and lateral extent within and between seams. This variability creates problems in predicting the slagging behaviour of æas-receivedÆ coal during combustion, especially where the iron content of the ash exceeds 19 per cent. Using the SIROLOG tool in co-operation with traditional borehole sample laboratory analysis results, patterns in this variability can be determined and related to geological properties and process of formation of the coal seams. Subsequently, areas of high iron can be predicted in advance of mining. Since 1992, on-going collection and interpretation of SIROLOG downhole geophysical log data has significantly contributed to a number of research projects related to gaining a preliminary understanding of the iron distribution and formation during the Coal MeasuresÆ deposition. Because the probe was able to record variations in coal mineral matter content, it was found to complement more conventional techniques such as reflected light petrography, X-Ray Diffraction and SEM techniques that examine the mineralogy of iron species. Additionally, software has been developed to allow integration of SIROLOG data into existing geology databases, enhancing coal quality modelling and daily prediction of parameters such as raw ash, silica and iron contents that are indicators of ash fusion propensity. The correlation of SIROLOG-derived iron geophysical traces between drillholes and other sample points highlighted lithological and structural controls in the iron distribution in the sequence previously not detected. This work has allowed the development of a methodology for predicting iron in advance of mining and reconciling as-sold coal quality to that predicted. Predictions are currently being assessed at the coal face as mining progresses through high-iron zones.

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit produced approximately 750,000 ounces of Au from two ore zones: the underground Empire Vein System and the open pit stockwork. The Empire Vein System has at least eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren. The vein system formed in a dominantly extensional environment, though some compressional faulting may have also existed during vein formation. There is no evidence for significant strike-slip faulting during vein formation, highlighting the fact that explorationists should pursue on-site structural patterns rather than fashionable models.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

A combined reflection seismic and magnetic survey off the south coast of New South Wales has revealed six distinct reflection horizons within the Lower Triassic- Upper Permian sequence, and has enabled the upper part of the Illawarra Coal Measures to be mapped in considerable detail. Large magnetic anomalies in the eastern half of the survey area appear to originate in the Gerringong Volcanic Sequence which forms the magnetic basement in this survey. Small residual anomalies in the western half of the area can be correlated with small scale faulting and folding in the uppert part of the Illawarra Coal Measures, as revealed by the seismic reflection survey. A synclinal axis striking at approximately 55¦ has been mapped near the western margin of the survey area, and areas of faulting and folding have been outlined by com- bined analysis of seismic and magnetic results.

As a prelude to studying the sorption desorption and permeability behaviour of coal cores in a triaxial stressing rig using sorb- able gases, the air permeability of typical cores was measured. Lump coal samples were obtained from three gas-troubled collieries in Queensland and New South Wales. These were cored in the laboratory and a simple laboratory permeameter employed which accepted 38 x 40 mm cores in a thick rubber sheath. Air pressure of 500 kPa was applied outside the sheath to provide suitable sealing between the rubber and the coal. Differential driving pressures up to 100 kPa were employed and the air flow measured by displacement of water columns in inverted graduated cylinders. Flow measurements accurate to + 2% could thereby be achieved. Coal lumps were cored both parallel and perpen- dicular to the bedding plane, and were observed prior to measurement for any notable features, in particular for the presence of fissures. Large blast furnaces demand high standards of preparation of feed materials which must meet tight specifications of chemical and physical quality. Measurement of these factors must be expeditious but the nature of the coke, sinter, ores and fluxes and the large tonnages involved requires substantial mechanical sampling plant. The equipment, its operations, and its problems, associated with the 5000 t.p.d. No.5 blast furnace at Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd., Port Kembla, are described and the efficacy of chemical blending achieved in the ore blending yards and sintering operation, is reported.

The R70 test is a good indicator of coal reactivity to oxygen and is commonly used to provide a rating of propensity for self-heating. Tests performed by The University of Queensland Spontaneous Combustion Testing Laboratory have resulted in the development of a large database that shows the impact of coal quality on this parameter. From these results it is possible to infer an R70 value, which can be used to gain an appreciation of the intrinsic coal reactivity before it is even tested. However, any interpretation of R70 values must consider the influences of coal rank, mineral matter and moisture content to provide a better understanding of the spontaneous combustion risk of a particular coal.

This session comprises six papers: One paper is specifically on advances in drilling techniques, a paper presents a classification for water inrush rich with corresponding guidelines for protection, two papers are concerned with mining impacts in integrated catchment management - one from the quality viewpoint and the other from the quality viewpoint, and the final two papers are case studies of mine dewatering - one for an underground mine threatened by a karst limestone aquifer and the other of an open-cut mine threatened by interbedded sand aquifers. The paper entitled, Practical mine dewatering by means of surface drilled wells by Sides is innovative in presenting the case for wells as cost effective and appropriate for a number of purposes including exploration, re-opening old mines, dewatering, grout emplacement and monitoring.
