Determination of stress-strain behaviour of rocks plays a crucial role in understanding the response of rocks during loading. However, it is a tedious, expensive and a time-consuming process to obtain such characteristics both in the laboratory and in situ. On the other hand, non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic velocities can produce a reliable and fast solution to indentify state of strain and stress in rocks. The present paper aims to provide insight into the relations amongst ultrasonic wave velocities, amplitudes and deformability properties of porous siltstone under compressive loading. For this purpose, pulse (vP) and shear wave velocities (vS) along with amplitudes (AP - AS), and applied loads with resultant strain were measured simultaneously so that response of siltstone to compression can be evaluated. In addition, initial vP and vS were recorded at the beginning of each test to calculate dynamic elastic properties of the specimens. This provided a comparison between static and dynamic elasticity properties of siltstone. Crack damage associated with the onset of dilation was also investigated. The results showed that there is a non-linear logarithmic relation between velocities and stress-strain level for siltstones.

When the Paulsens operation was poised to be placed on care and maintenance, Bill Beament and the rest of the Northern Star Resources (NSR) team capitalised on the opportunity to send the Ashburton region’s only operating gold mine into the record books.A three-stage strategy was devised by NSR to pay off the acquisition and maximise the return from the operation. The first stage was to mine the 55 000 oz mine plan and pay off the cost of the acquisition, then maintain profitable production beyond the seven months and re-establish a mine life. The second stage involved an early commitment to a 220 m long diamond drill drive being placed in the hanging wall of the orebody from which the extensions of the orebody could be further explored, allowing the second stage of the plan to come into effect and extend the mine life by converting Inferred Resources into the mine plan. The third stage of the initial plan was to utilise this drill drive and continue to drill deeper holes beyond the current limit of drilling in the ore zones to extend the orebody and increase the mine’s life.With an ever growing desire to further expand, the young company took on the bold move of establishing its own mining services division. A critical element to the success of this was ensuring that the right people were recruited with the appropriate specialised skill sets.Aligning common goals amongst all NSR team members, from the board and senior management to the work force on site, was critical to integrate the new and driven direction that Paulsens had adopted. It was essential to change the focus and a shift in all employees’ attitudes and values from a mine that was all but down and out, to a site that wanted to be kicking some serious goals.Teaming together a passionate and driven leader with a strong allied workforce was always going to put NSR in the best position possible to make Paulsens the success story that it now is. Its two years since we have presented at this conference and since that time we have made significant progress with our coal developments in New Zealand. In 2005 we held the Whareatea West exploration permit and had just completed the purchase of the Cascade mine. Today, in addition to Cascade and Whareatea we now have the Takitimu Mine, Eastern Coal Supplies, our coal blending and distribution facility in Timaru, prospecting permits at Ohai and Orepuki and an established customer base underpinned by the contract to supply FonterraÆs Clandeboye plant commencing in September 08. For this presentation I would like to take you through our purchase and development of the Takitimu mine.

Some recent and current research and development projects relating to strip type open cut coal mining are reviewed. The projects include a dragline-hopper-truck mining system, an overburden slusher system, improvement of dragline operations, continuous excavation and conveying of overburden materials, and a steep angle coal conveying system. Most of these projects offer prospects for reducing costs in deep strip mining operations, but only the overburden slusher project has the potential for large cost reductions. A project on highwall mining of coal has demonstrated that this coal mining system is viable and capable of achieving high productivity rates. Production highwall mining operations are now starting to become established in Australia.

The paper discusses assay methods generally used when prospecting for gold, and also the applicability of various chemical methods, it describes a new paper chromatographic technique.for making fairly rapid semi-quantitative assays for very fine gold. Testing of the method in field work shows that this simple method could have applications in geologic work, in prospecting and in certain routine mine sampling work. It is not yet a method that can be used to detect anomalies in traces of gold dispersed around an orebody, as is general practice in geochemical prospecting.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the English economist Harrod (1958), "the acute shortage of gold in the world-because currency value has not been adjusted in line with the fall in the goods value of the various currencies-has been a familiar fact for some time now". Harrod calculates that a rise in the price of gold to double its present value is necessary to rectify this condition, and that, if this rise were to take place, increase in production and reduction in private hoarding might well bring annual accretion to world stocks from the presentaverage of about $464 million to a figure close to the $2,000 million that would probably eiiminate these shortages.Any increase in the price of gold is bound to lead to a great increase in prospecting at working mines, in abandoned areas and possibly in untouched country. Prospecting, techniques for base metal orebodies have improved greatly in the last thirty years; but methods available to detect gold occurring without accessory metals have not received the same attention. For the past 40 years, underground trucking using diesel powered or electric wheel driven vehicles, either conversions of surface trucks, or purpose built, has been the preferred means of ore and waste transport in underground mining. The relatively low capital cost, flexibility and requirement for minimal infrastructure means that trucking systems are selected in the early stages of a mining operation. An increase in the carrying capacity of trucking systems with dimensions to operate within existing development excavations is the solution to long term ore and waste underground haulage systems using trucks. The next generation of underground trucks will be low profile articulated trucks with carrying capacities up to 60 t.

It was once considered sufficient to revegetate old mine sites using grass or trees. At the commencement of the Stawell JV (SJV) operation in 1981, management determined that pre-existing vegetation would be replaced. This policy was somewhat 'ahead of its time'. The cost of rehabilitation at SJV averages $8000 per hectare. Rehabilitation of this calibre requires a practical understanding of local ecosystems.

Municipal solid waste of incineration (MSWI) bottom ashes are recycled as aggregates in civil engineering. These heterogeneous materials are composed of crystalline and glassy solid phases which contain trace metals, presenting a potential risk to the environment. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) can provide quantitative chemical information, in particular the localisation of metals at trace level. Unstable glassy phases formed during incineration are present in relatively high proportions. Their analyses suggest a continuum between melilite-bearing glasses and dark glasses enriched in iron with abundant spinel aggregates. These primary glasses are enriched in zinc (~4500 ppm) but depleted in lead (~800 ppm) by comparison with the bulk chemical composition and reference materials. Heterogeneous cementing and encrusting admixtures on coarse grains are studied in a second step. SIMS imaging suggests a superposition of band zones including an intermediate layer enriched in iron oxyhydroxides and a superficial layer with calcium accumulation. A strong spatial association between lead and iron is systematically observed. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) supports these observations by demonstrating that lead co-precipitation within iron oxyhydroxides, or sorption on their surfaces, may be a main containment process in the cementing and encrusting admixtures, whereas lead speciation is globally more complex in MSWI bottom ash.

The rights of nations to explore and exploit minerals in the continental shelf were recognized by the 1958 Convention on the Continental Shelf. The Commonwealth Government has expressed the view that, as a party to the Convention, it has, by virtue of its foreign affairs power, full rights to legislate with respect to offshore minerals. States have taken the view that the rights recognized as extending into the continental shelf are land mineral rights, which belong to the States, and the Commonwealth legislative power in this field is strictly limited. Without prejudice to each other's rights, Commonwealth and States agreed to "mirror" legislation in relation to offshore petroleum. Commonwealth and State legislation, of which the operative parts are in identical terms, are both administered, in relation to areas adjacent to each State, by State Ministers of Mines. The legislation has functioned well in practice, though difficulties are encountered by the Commonwealth Government due to lack of direct accountability to Commonwealth Parliament. An alternative scheme designed to overcome this problem is outlined.

Telfer is a gold/copper operation, currently operating one open pit mine and one underground mine. The ore processing plant consists of two parallel trains involving semi-autogenous mill, ball mill and crusher (SABC) grinding, flotation and leaching. Due to receiving relatively high grade underground ore for over half of its total feed, Train 1 frequently experienced cleaning circuit overloading during high production periods. This resulted in losses in recovery and ineffective concentrate upgrade. As a quick and simple solution, the Train 1 copper flotation circuit was reconfigured to send concentrate from the first two rougher cells directly to the final concentrate and return the cleaner scavenger tailings to the third rougher cell. These modifications have resulted in a 1.4 per cent increase in plant copper recovery with no change in final concentrate grade. Preliminary results also indicate gold recovery has increased by more than 1 per cent since the circuit reconfiguration. Other benefits include less spillage, more friendly circuit to operate and a more consistent metallurgical performance. Focus for the next phase of optimisation is on concentrate upgrade. A number of opportunities have been identified and are currently being investigated, including staged reagent addition, single stage cleaning of the first two copper rougher concentrates, regrinding of the remaining copper rougher concentrate prior to cleaning and process control based on a machine vision system.

The role of the mine geologist in a business perspective is self-evident to some, but to others it may be a new concept. All mine geologists need to know exactly how they add value to the business if they are to be successful. Alternatively, if they do not add value, then they will become redundant. This paper seeks to understand some of the contributing problems that hinder the mine geologist from operating in a business perspective. In doing so, a new context (for some) is proposed to aid the mine geologist and the operation gain greater value from geology. The proposal suggests how to ensure that the activities of our geologists are intrinsically linked to the business process that we are involved in. The mine geologist can and must play a pivotal role in the success of an operation. To do this, they must understand some principles of business such as:process, customer/supplier relationships, and organisational structure. Our geologists must know the business objectives, understand the product that the customer needs and use their geological skills to deliver the product safely, on time and to specification. As geologists, we can be instrumental in ensuring that the operational environment is structured in such a way that maximum value is realised, not only from the mine geologists but the entire site team. In doing so, mine geologists will realise their full potential in delivering the outcomes the business demand, and therefore be recognised as strong contributors to business success.

Ground conditions at the Kencana mine, Indonesia, are generally poor and an underhand cut and fill mining method is used for extraction. Due to these poor ground conditions, all vertical development has been conducted using blind, top-down, sink and line excavation methods. Due to time constraints, raiseboring was considered the only viable excavation method for the installation of a return ventilation system for the K2 (Kencana extension) project. In order to achieve successful raiseboring in the poor ground conditions a number of strategies were used including: a detailed geotechnical study for optimal position of the shaft/s, splitting shaft excavation vertically, raiseboring of multiple smaller diameter shafts, extensive pregrouting, installation of drainage holes, and rapid installation of support following excavation.

Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. This analysis reveals that the relative power inefficiency of large ball mills is due to inefficient grinding of coarse (plus 4 mm) particles in these mills. A qualitative physical hypothesis is proposed to explain this behaviour. The results of the analysis can be used to scale up ball mill behaviour, using the mathematical models and techniques developed. A simpler ball mill scale-up procedure is also proposed, and its limitations stated. Laboratory experiments are being conducted to determine the average size distributions of single particles of different ores after breaKage. These experiments can distinguish between the different ores, and it is hoped to use their results to model and predict the grinding of different ores in ball Mills.

Arising out of the increasing demands for efficiency in modern ore-dressing operations has grown a requirement for fuller knowledge of the characteristics of the ore treated. In part, this is being met by improved methods of study of the mode of occurrence of the constituent minerals, and of the intricacies of their physical relationships.A typical instance of the need for such a study is the presence of some undesired mineral in a flotation concentrate or tailing, which may be due either to mechanical association through insufficient grinding, or to incomplete separation in the flotation operation.Again, with modern practice in fine grinding, which often requires that from 70% upwards of the ground ore shall pass a 200-mesh screen, it is obviously impossible to obtain data on comparative grinding efficiencies, for instance, unless there is adequate knowledge of the size-composition of the material passing the finest available screen.Studies like these can be made satisfactorily only after size-separation (which may be carried out conveniently by elutriation) and by actual visual examination with the aid of a microscope, and the minute size of the mineral grains to be examined has necessitated the development of a new technique of sizing and microscopic examination.

The Old Man Range, south of Alexandra, in central Otago consists of a package of highly folded greenschist facies schist of the Wanaka lithologic association. The range is crosscut by several east to ENE-striking high angle gold-bearing quartz veins, (eg Whites Reef and Grays Reef), which were extensively worked in the late 1800s. The range is bounded on its east side by the Old Man Fault, which separates these rocks from generally flat lying and planar Caples Terrane schist. To the west of the Old Man Fault, about halfway up the range, a large subparallel, 100 m wide fault zone strikes NNW and appears to cut off the historic veins. The fault zone consists of highly sheared and folded rocks and numerous high angle cataclasites and centimetre-scale clay gouge zones. Hydrothermal alteration is not apparent and the individual faults and shears are clay altered, possibly due to weathering, without visible quartz veins. Gold, limonite pseudomorphs after pyrite and rutile are concentrated in some of the narrow cataclasites and gouge zones. These mineralised structures are texturally similar to the gold-bearing reefs and may be structurally related. It is postulated that the NNW-striking shear zone and ENE-striking veins may be a conjugate array formed during a period of Cretaceous normal faulting.

The properties of iron ore sinter – commonly defined by measures of tumble strength, reduction degradation and reducibility – have a major impact on blast furnace performance. These properties are largely influenced by raw material properties, in particular the bulk ore composition. Despite this importance, there is a lack of quantitative data on the impact of ore chemical composition on iron ore sintering. This is surprising since the levels of Fe, SiO2, Al2O3, P, MgO and other elements, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore, play a major role in determining the abundance and type of high-temperature bonding phases that form during sintering. It is the abundance and nature of the high-temperature bonding phase(s) that directly influences sinter quality. This study combines in situ diffraction experiments in model sinter systems with laboratory-based compact sinter tests using natural ores to examine the links between iron ore composition and sintering temperature and their effects on standard metallurgical sinter quality test methods. Results help to establish the critical compositional and thermal parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry, which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter matrix. This information should enable operators to predict optimum sinter operating conditions based on the initial chemistry and mineralogy of the iron ore fines and recognise the chemical modifications to the original iron ore fines required to produce high-quality iron ore sinter.CITATION:Pownceby, M I, Webster, N A S, Manuel, J and Ware, N, 2015.
