The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

Record quantities of slag were produced in 1974. Slag usage in this year amounted to 8.5 mega tonnes for granulated blast furnace slag and 7.7 mega tonnes for crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags. Granulated blast furnace slag is mainly used as a hydraulic bonding material in the manufacture of cement and in road construction. These applications give a fuel saving and reduce processing costs. Crushed blast furnace and L.D. slags find application as a substitute for natural aggregates in road construction and in the production of concrete. There is no doubt of ttie interest to utilise to the maximum all the slag produced by the steelmaking industry, thus preventing the build up of slag heaps detrimental to the environment and favouring the disposal of the heaps formed in the past. World wide efforts are being made to achieve this objective.

During operations, mining and metallurgical processes may generate effluents such as tailings water, acid mine drainage (AMD) and seepage and process acid streams. Depending on the type of ore and the metallurgical process, these effluents may contain one or more toxic compounds (eg acidity or alkalinity, cyanide, ammonia and/or nitrate, heavy metals, total suspended solids (TSS), sulfate) in elevated concentrations requiring treatment before their discharge to the environment or recycle/reuse in the process. Natural oxidation of sulfide minerals present in mining wastes (eg tailings and waste rock) at mining sites may generate AMD, which is characterised as a low pH, high acidity effluent containing heavy metals and sulfate. If generation of AMD cannot be controlled and/or prevented, AMD needs to be collected and treated for neutralisation of acidity and reduction of metals and TSS to meet regulated water quality standards. It is important to note that some of these compounds may persist in run-off from mine sites, even after the mine and processing facilities are decommissioned. Treatment of mining and metallurgical process effluents can be accomplished by means of various physical, chemical and/or biological methods. The mode of process application may vary from the use of either specifically designed, controlled and automated facilities or passive systems. Lime neutralisation and precipitation is the most common method used in the mining industry to treat AMD. To reduce the problems associated with disposal and long-term storage of the resulting sludge, the use of a high-density sludge process (HDS) has become a preferred option. The use of other chemical reagents, waste or by-products from other industries, and biological sulfate reduction methods can also be considered as viable options for site-specific situations. Recently, several passive treatment systems have been designed and successfully operated, even in the cold North American climate. This paper will discuss available options and provide insights for selecting a suitable method for a given situation using case studies from projects conducted by Golder Associates around the world over the last decade.

The Liddell longwall equipment consists of 118 four leg supports, a shearer and armoured face conveyor of 170mm length. The equipment was supplied to Coal & Allied Operations Pty Limited (Coal and Allied) by Westfalia Australia Pty Limited (Westfalia). The project commenced as a feasibility study in 1983, a proposal was put to the board of directors in March 1984 and a specification distributed. Nine companies tendered for the supply of a longwall face and the supplier was selected from a short list of four companies. At the same time Coal & Allied examined the facilities at Liddell Colliery and decided to upgrade the conveyor belt system to cater for the high production from a longwall face. The surface facilities, transport system, water and electrical supplies to the colliery were also to be upgraded. During the twelve months to December 1985, the colliery was upgraded while the longwall equipment was being manufactured. The manufacturing process involved roof support testing, compatibility testing and finally a build up of 40m of longwall face

"Mining is an inherently risky business: from the technical, environmental, social and economic uncertainties associated with advancing an exploration concept to a viable project; to the risks associated with the operating, market, and safety risks and uncertainties attached to a developed mine; and the final mine closure process.Investors and other stakeholders assessing the risk, opportunity and relative value associated with a resource project need to appreciate the project in its correct context. Errors, omissions, biased reporting or conflicting information in reporting may result in a misinterpretation of technical and financial results, leading to biased estimates or assumptions on project value (Noppé, 2016).Simplistically, a project can be assessed on three key areas for positioning the project in its correct relative context, namely: the project development stage the confidence in the estimated quantities and qualities of the resource, reserve and/or product the level of accuracy, precision and confidence in the technical and economic studies supporting the project.In the latter case, the ‘technical and economic’ information includes assessing the necessary social, environmental and commercial/legal/governmental approvals for the project.Responsible management of a resource project through its full life cycle relies on competent and dependable control and direction being effectively provided by the technical, business and board leadership of the organisation. Design and construction techniques used to develop two highway tunnels in inaccessible mountainous terrain are described. Measures used to adapt the design to the unusual geology and topography are discussed, as well as measures to adapt the construction methods to available equipment, materials, and skills. Sharp local variations in geoloqic conditions resulted in field modifications to both design and construction techniques. The geology is a volcanic ash and breccia-agglomerate at one site, a jointed andesite at the other, which is also the site of a major landslide. Both rock reinforcement in the form of pretensioned and grouted rock bolts with a shotcrete lining,and rock support by struc- tural steel sets with a reinforced concrete lining were used. A canyonside location and high lateral in-situ stresses required modification of design procedures. Pilot tunnels at both sites resulted in adapting the designs to site conditions with large savings in lining costs, disclosing problem areas in advance of the main excavation, and cushioning of blasting pressure to minimize stability problems.

In recent years, significant improvements have been made in the design and operation of carbon-in-pulp plants. Some of the major developments in plant operation and technology are reviewed together with an outline of the research being undertaken in Western Australia. The main problems facing operators include the understanding and control of carbon fouling and regeneration, and the recovery of gold from the carbon. It is shown that carbon fouling by a variety of agents, particularly cyanide, calcium carbonate and silica, cause a significant loss of kinetic activity which in turn leads to poor plant performance. The importance of acid washing and adequate thermal reactivation is discussed. Although the Anglo elution procedure is commonly used in South Africa its use in Australia in preference to the conventional Zadra elution procedure is likely to be re- stricted because of its demand for high quality water. Solvent elution by the recently developed Micron procedure using refluxing methanol, ethanol or acetonitrile vapours is an attractive alternative. This elutes gold in 4-6 hours and provides concentrated gold solutions suitable for simplified gold recovery steps.

The estimate of an ore reserve is a vital statement made about a mineral occurrence by an evaluator. It is important that such a statement communicate reality to all groups involved in a mining project, be they technical, financial, company directors, Stock Exchanges or the public. Ore reserve statements should state both resources and recoverable ore reserves. Resources may be important in very long term considerations, (because mining, metallurgical technology and economics change with time) but recoverable reserves are todays reality. The important factors contributing to recoverable reserves (in a general sense) are geology, mining method (and its impact on dilution and ore loss), metallurgical recovery, costs and commodity prices. These all need to be reflected in the ore reserve statement. In this paper recoverable ore reserve concepts across a wide range of orebodies are considered and discussed with respect to geology, mining method and ore reserve calculation procedures.

Underground development drill and blast practices have generally remained unchanged for decades. Historically, development optimisation has focused mainly on the application of perimeter control products in order to reduce overbreak, and efficiencies in development cycle times to increase advance rates. In today’s environment of ever increasing operating costs and lower ore grades, it has become even more critical to focus on the optimisation of drill and blast in development mining. It is a crucial component in ensuring mining schedules are maintained, but more importantly achieving the objective of getting to the orebody in the shortest possible time.This paper will focus on the development optimisation process used in a trial at Xstrata’s George Fisher Mine in North Queensland. Not only did the trial include the typical optimisation areas of charge loading practices, perimeter control methods, drill design standardisation and quality control processes, it also investigated the significance of delay accuracy with regards to perimeter control and drill design optimisation.One of the key measures of the trial was a comparative analysis between baseline development and development with the staged introduction of optimisation elements using 3D photogrammetry as a validation tool. A detailed cost analysis between the various stages was also a key measurable of the trial.The results of the work undertaken at George Fisher have shown that the accuracy of electronic detonators can produce significant benefits in development blasting. When combined with standard optimisation philosophies a substantial reduction in overbreak, ground support requirements and development cycle times can be achieved, whilst still being able to reduce the overall development operating costs.CITATION:Kovacs, J, 2014. Gold placers in the Nokomai and Nevis valleys are dominantly Quaternary in age. They occur mainly in western tributaries of the upper Nevis, eastern tributaries of the middle and upper Nokomai, and in the trunk valleys themselves. Placer gold in both valleys is dominantly a-phase Au-Ag-Hg alloy. Au-Ag alloy is absent or rare in most of the deposits, except in the lower Nokomai. Alpha-Au-Ag-Hg alloy is typically coarse-grained (up to 2 cm), angular, and rarely flattened or folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and psuedo-hexagonal crystal-pluck cavities are common. Fluvial transport distance predicted from the maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag-Hg alloy particles is typically less than 10-20 km. Coarse (up to 2 cm) cinnabar is commonly associated with the Au-Ag-Hg alloy, and both were probably derived from hydrothermal sources in western tributaries ofthe upper Nevis and eastern tributaries of the upper Nokomai. Minor secondary Au-Ag-Hg alloy occurs locally in the lower Nokomai, where it coats or cements detrital a-phase Au-Ag-Hg and Au-Ag alloy particles. Au-Ag alloy dominates over Au-Ag-Hg alloy in the lower half of the lower Nokomai alluvial plain and gravel of a raised channel incised into semischist basement adjacent to the plain. The Au-Ag alloy is rounded and commonly flattened and folded. Crystalline texture, quartz intergrowths, and pluck cavities are rare, and a fluvial transport distance of 25-40 km is estimated from maximum Flatness Index ofAu-Ag alloy particles. The Au-Ag alloy, three types of gamet, magnetite, clinozoisite and well foliated schist boulders in the abandoned channel are not found in the pumpellyite-actinolite facies bedrock in the Nokomai. These components were derived from greenschist facies schist and sedimentary sources in Otago, many tens of kilometers north of the Nokomai catchment. They were transported to the Nokomai either in Wakatipu Glacier till or fluvio-glacial outwash that entered the valley via Nokomai Saddle, the confluence with the Mataura, or both.

In Munich's peculiar hydrogeological conditions (water bearing sand strata between layers of impermeable clay, silt or marl) are proper functioning groundwater lowering methods of decisive importance for underground construc- tion. Shield tunnelling with compressed air has al- ready proved to be successful. In view of growing application of shotcrete tunnelling it was obvious to consider the use of compressed air even here. After a preliminary research-project the first subway section "shotcrete under compressed air" was 1979 awarded in Munich and since that time five sections have been awarded, respectively completed. On the basis of the experiences meanwhile obtained reports will be given stating the frame conditions in which this new construction method can be applied. The tunnels consist of two shells. The outer ist driven by shotcrete under compressed air. In order to keep the air overpressure low, the groundwater often is previously detensioned or partially lowered. The inner shell of watertight concrete is built under atmosperic pressure.

The mechanism of clay slime flocculation in coal washing circuits is considered and it is concluded that polymer flocculants are most suitable. It was found that the addition of sea water with a polymer flocculant improved flocculation and settling, and it was also found that dilution of a flocculated pulp increased floc size and hence settling rate.In predicting plant consumption of reagent it was found that cylinder tests, or even pilot plant tests, could give erroneous results, particularly on flocculated pulps. Different flocculants may, however, be compared in cylinder tests.For filtration, flocculation with Separan plus sea water was much more beneficial than flocculation with Separan alone.INTRODUCTIONDuring the mining of coal, and its subsequent beneficiation by washing, large quantities of minus 10 mesh material are produced. This fine material, which consists of broken down shales and fine coal, causes difficulties in water clarification circuits, in refuse disposal, and in filtration of fine coal.These difficulties can be largely overcome by flocculation, and this paper discusses the mechanism of flocculation, the methods by which a selection of flocculant may be made from the large number available, and the limitation of the prediction of plant performance from laboratory tests. This work applies particularly to the washeries of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. (B.H.P.) and Australian Iron and Steel Ltd. (A.I. & S.) .

The authors are looking at the behaviour of the mineral processing circuits by means of the simulators operating under random disturbance. The present paper deals with the fuzzy control systems in comparison with PID controllers. A series of tests are conducted on simplified prototype processes with (1) dead time plus first-order lag model and (2) diffusive model. In the next series of tests the self-sustained process model was introduced to improve control against dead time. In both cases fuzzy and PID controllers are optimised by EVOP method. Particular attention is paid to the effect of observation noise to analyse for the problems which can be fatal to practical applications in mineral processing. Finally the methods developed are applied to a closed-circuit wet grinding system simulator operating under random disturbance.

A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

This paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Ltd.The North Mine orebodies occur in knots of minor folds on a simple limb structure which is itself highly folded, giving rise to two distinct orebodies pitching N. at av. 42° down to 2,920-ft. level, where the pitch steepens to near vertical as a result of complementary shear movement on the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.The lack of adequate marker beds and top and bottom relations makes the resolving of the complex structural environment of the orebodies most difficult.To test the deeper ground of each side of the De Bavay Fault on the 2,600-ft. level the footwall drive was extended 3,556 feet and over 20,000 ft. of drilling completed from three transverse fans, only one of which intersected the orebodies due to steepening of pitch.The problem of locating the North Mine orebodies N. of the DeBavay Fault remains speculative because the exact position of them S. of the fault is still unknown. Exploration beyond the fault in the search for ore had two lines of mineralization to consider, an eastern one through Cosgroves-Round Hill, long regarded as the continuation of the main lode, and a western one passing through Silver Hill Silver Peak.From surface 45,000 ft. of drilling was completed in five sections, establishing that the structure was dominantly synclinal with a flatdipping E. limb, the W. limb and adjoining structures being involved in the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone. Mineralization, though weak, was remarkably persistent but the economic mineralization exposed at surface has not persisted with any continuity.Deep exploratory drilling below the bottom level (3,370 ft.) has established high-grade ore to a depth of 4,095 ft. and also has proved its existence within the Globe-Vauxhall Crush Zone.INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes the progress of geological exploration at North Broken Hill Limited from the inception of the Geological Department in 1941 until the end of 1955. The writer has drawn freely on departmental records for the period prior to 1947.

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The impact of construction activity, unbalanced temporary stockpiles and adjacent deep excavation for a mole removal will be discussed.CITATION:Zhang, H and Lawrence, A, 2014. The approaches to simulation and the techniques to carry it out are discussed in detail covering drying and firing for the straight grate process. The CSIRO simulator design is described and some errors in simulation are discussed.

It is my role at this juncture to report to you on behalf of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions itself. In essence, the Council is an orbital body - a little like Halley's Comet - it returns to earth, in spectacular style, once in every four years. We must acknowledge, however, that the spectacle is provided by the constituent member body organising the particular event and, on this occasion, it is The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. On behalf of the Council and its other constituent bodies may I thank the Australasian Institute most sincerely. Our thanks go to Sir James Foots, the President of the 13th Congress, and to all the members of the organising committee and to the five sub- committees. Over 40 people are involved as full members and I am certain there will have been many more involved in very meaningful ways. None of this great- team would ask me to mention them individually, I'm sure, but to fail to acknowledge the role of John Funnell, the Honorary Secretary, would be an unforgivable omission. We must also thank the kindred institutions in Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia who all helped with the tours themselves or with the initial preparations. Qantas, Jetabout Australia, and Jetabout Singapore have all also made very important contributions and, in our different ways, we each owe our thanks to them. At the two most recent meetings of the Congress - in Hong Kong and Johannesburg - Professor Marston Fleming made this report on behalf of the Council and was supported on both occasions by Robert MacWilliam as vice- chairman. Marston died in 1983 and Robert died in 1984; both men contributed a great deal to CMMI and we will miss their counsel for a long time. As you know, Sir Alistair Frame succeeded Marston Fleming as chairman in 1984 and I succeeded Robert MacWilliam as Vice-chairman.

The mining of high-grade narrow vein deposits is a predominant field of activity in the precious metal sector. These types of deposits are located throughout the globe and have a significant presence in mining operations. The principle factor that has undermined the profitability and effectiveness of mining such ore zones is the substantial dilution that occurs when blasting with explosives during extraction. In order to minimise ore dilution, the thermal fragmentation mining method enables the operator to extract a narrow mineralised corridor, 30 cm to 1 m wide (according to the true width of the ore vein). By inserting a strong burner powered by diesel fuel and air into a pilot hole previously drilled directly into the vein, a thermal reaction occurs spalling the rock and enlarging the hole to 30 - 100 cm in diameter. This patented method produces highly concentrated ore, resulting in 400 - 500 per cent less dilution when compared to conventional mining methods. The mining method was conceived with the aim of mining ounces, not tonnes. This method of extraction, reduces the environmental impact of mining operations since much smaller quantities of rock are displaced, stockpiled, and treated using chemical agents. The fully mechanised equipment operated by a two-person team, maximises the effectiveness of skilled personnel, increases productivity, and reduces risks of injuries. Important economic benefits are generated for large- and small-scale mining operations alike. For large-scale operations, the mining method increases mining reserves, lowers the cost per ounce, and increases the total profitability of existing mine operations. The method also significantly lowers costs and risks of developing and mining small-scale deposits, requiring less investment capital, shortening the payback period, thus reducing the lending risk.  Combined with a small modular processing unit able to process between 100 - 300 tons per day, the method substantially lowers the financial break-even point for small-scale mining operations in a narrow vein environment. The company has been working with the technology at its Rocmec 1 mining site; results achieved and future developments are discussed.
