Gold mining in Vatukoula had been a low tonnage/high grade operation for much of its 55-year life. During 1991 it became clear that a change in direction was needed if the mine was going to continue to prosper. The challenges of ore reserves of only three years, the prevailing gold price and high infrastructure and fixed costs combined to force changes in mining strategy.A more productive mining method was required to lower the unit mining cost, lower the pay limit and make more effective use of the resource.The flat dipping mineralised faults or flatmakes had been mined by updip, handheld room and pillar methods with a more recent trackless development adaptation. Furthermore, up to 40 per cent of the resource was left in pillars and broken rock.

Recovery of tin and copper from concen trates containing cassiterite, stannite and chalcopyrite was studied in laboratory-scale tests designed to simulate continuous operation of the matte fuming process in which tin is recovered as SnS fume while copper accumulates in the matte. Charges made up of 300g of mixtures of the concentrate and siliceous flux were added at a uniform rate in pelletized form to crucibles containing 300g of matte and 50g of slag (both of which were recovered from previous tests), while blowing through the matte with air or oxygen-nitrogen mixtures at a rate of 3 to 5 1/min. Accurate material balances enabled the effects of process operating conditions on tin recovery and sulfur utilization to be deter- mined. When operated correctly, the matte fuming process gave tin recoveries exceeding 90 percent in spite of wide variations in the copper content of the matte and in the operat- ing conditions. Deterioration of tin recovery was associated with undersaturation of the slag with respect to silica, and with high partial pressure of sulfur dioxide (greater than approx- imately 0.2) brought about by oxygen enrichment of the blowing air. The utilization of sulfur varied widely in low grade mattes. Copper in excess of approx- imately 10% promoted formation of SO2 by the commonly accepted reaction: FeS + 1-120 2= FeO + S02 while in copper-free and lower grade mattes a substantial fraction of the oxygen was consumed in the alternative reaction FeS + i 02 = FeO + z S2.

Technologies are receiving a lot of 'press' - and rightly so; as they are seen as the means for achieving quantum leaps in productivity and cost reductions. A point of concern for Caterpillar is that we do not believe there is enough understanding of the infrastructure needed to support some of the future technologies, as well there is not enough utilisation of the current systems.

Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

Barcelona Metro Line 9 (Line 9) is an essential infrastructure, improving the transversal transport in Barcelona by connecting the greater part of the currently existing radial lines. The purpose of Line 9 is to create a peripheral line surrounding the city of 1.6 million people (metropolitan area exceeds five million), and includes 52 stations, of which a total of 32 are deep shafts and 19 transfer stations in a densely populated area with several geographical constraints.The tunnel has an inner diameter of 10.90 m, bored with an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) in soil sections with precast concrete lining type universal ring and segments 40 cm thick.A single tunnel solution was adopted, driven by functionality and costs savings. The internal tunnel section is divided into two levels to allow for one way rail transit including the platforms in each station on each level in order to optimise the space created by the TBM excavation and comply with the operational needs. The division in two areas of the tunnel was carried out through the construction of a horizontal slab resting on the tunnel segments with a constant thickness of 40 cm at the central part of the slab and supporting side walls.CITATION:Justa Cámara, R and Pinillos Lorenzana, L M, 2014. Vatukoula is a gold mining township situated at the south-west periphery of a Tertiary caldera which measures 3 miles by 4 miles. Erosion of the caldera resulted in the formation of a topographic depression, called the Tavua basin, covering about 30 square miles. This area, also known as the Tavua Goldfield, has been the site for spasmodic prospecting since the initial discovery of gold in 1932.The mineralization at Vatukoula is typically epithermal with the gold occurring as tellurides, auriferous sulphides, and to a much less extent as native gold. The lodes are confined to three major structures i.e. north-west shears, flatly dipping structures (flat makes), and local shatter orebodies.Within these structures, at least five types of controls are recognized to account for the localization of the oreshoots. The dominant control is structure.The lode structures are related to the overall structural pattern of the Tavua basin. This pattern, which is controlled by the collapse planes of the caldera and a north-west shear system, produced a "shatter block" atVatukoula and elsewhere around the caldera.Structural analysis indicates there are certain areas in the Tavua basin where exploration could be rewarded by the discovery of orebodies with similar controls to those of the productive Vatukoula block.

The Osborne copper-gold deposit (within the Trough Tank project area) is located in the Cloncurry Shire about 195 kilometres south-east of Mount Isa. It is hosted by Proterozoic metasediments of the Eastern succession of the Mount Isa Inlier. The deposit is overlain by 25-40 metres of Mesozoic cover, so it represents a true "blind target". Placer Exploration has 100% outright ownership of the property, having purchased the remaining 10% interest in the property from Shell in early 1993.Intensive exploration, both surface and via drilling at Osborne, has taken place since 1985, when CSR Limited Mineral Exploration and Development Group (acquired by Placer in 1988) entered into a joint venture with Billiton Minerals. Exploration effort from 1985 to June 1988 outlined a 20 kilometre strike length of magnetic horizons, in what was termed the North-East, Central and Southern anomalies, which were drilled with weak indications of copper-gold mineralization in the North-East anomaly. During the later half of 1989, four core holes were drilled into the shallower northern partofthe North-East anomalywhere previous drilling had outlined economic intersections of mineralization. These holes encountered high-grade copper-gold mineralization confirming the potential for an economic deposit to be hosted within the ironstone sequence. Further drilling involving over 400 holes (100 kilometres of drilling) has brought the deposit up to its present resource status.The current resource inventory is 36 million tonnes grading 2.0% copper and 1.0 grams pertonne gold and includes a high-grade zone of 13 million tonnes grading 3.6% copper and 1.5 grams per tonne gold. The discovery of this potential economic mineralization resulted from a persistent exploration effort based on indications that a large mineralizing system existed within a sequence of ironstones.

Mineral processing is at the hub of the exploration-mining-metals production system. Because of the large volumes of material processed, incremental technology investments can pay off better than for other parts of the system. However, much of mineral processing remains a 'black art', because we are behind in investing in modem technologies. Consequently, we have one of the best opportunities to improve efficiency and competitiveness through the application and transfer of technologies that have already been developed for other industries. The reluctance of minerals companies to place priority in our area is not because we lack new ideas; our senior management has not been convinced, based on our previous results, that such investments will pay off as well as other investment opportunities competing for the same resources. The key is the proper establishment of technology strategy and more effective transfer of technology. The presentation will identify the failure mechanisms of technology transfer and will present a model for improving the success rate, a prerequisite for raising the priority of mineral processing investment. Topics emphasised include strategy formulation, human resources planning, and total quality management principles applied to improving technology transfer.

Dense medium separation (DMS) is one of several preconcentration methods used for early waste rejection from run-of-mine ores at relatively coarse particle sizes prior to additional milling and beneficiation. DMS has been used extensively in the coal, diamonds, mineral sands, base metals and iron ore industries to produce either a final product or as a preconcentration step. Laboratory scale and pilot test work at the Met-Solve laboratory in Canada has demonstrated successful separation and upgrading of other minerals such as lead, zinc, copper and lithium based ores using DMS.This paper reviews historical dense media systems, results from the pilot-scale multi-stage DMS Separator “Condor” system, as well as production plants and associated laboratory heavy liquid separation (HLS) test work on various minerals. The mineral systems tested included a lithium bearing ore and a fluorspar ore. Other minerals were tested but are not reported in this paper.Pilot plant test work on a fluorspar ore showed that 41.6% of the mass could be rejected to the tailings stream while 95.3% of the CaF2 was recoverable to the product stream. On a spodumene sample that was tested, it was possible to reject 55% of the mass to tailings while recovering over 90% of the lithium.In recent market conditions and with the decreasing grades in existing ores, preconcentration should be a consideration to maximise the value of certain operations.CITATION:Lundt, M and Grewal, I, 2017. HISTORY OF PROCESS DEVELOPMENT The manufacture of coke from coal commenced at the beginning of the 17th century by heaping coal into circular mounds in the open, covering with earth, clay or ash and slowly burning the coal in the mounds to produce a heap of coke. Naturally the process was slow in production rate with low coke recovery due to the loss of that part of the coal which was completely burnt to ash. As a natural consequence of this initial carbonisation method, a coke oven design was developed so that the coking chamber, which was constructed of brick, was circular in plan, cylindrical in section with a dome shaped roof - similar in shape to the original coal mounds. As the shape of the chamber was similar to the old dome shaped beehive, the ovens were called beehive ovens. The ovens were built in long single or double rows with retaining walls between each oven and as such were known as a battery of beehive coke ovens. In these early beehive ovens, coal was charged from hand wheeled tubs into a hole into the top of each oven, hand- levelled with a rake and the oven side opening sealed with bricks and clay except for some small holes in the opening to admit limited quantity of air for combustion. Coking commenced by the heat retained in the brickwork from the previous charge. The gases evolved from the coal, together with the admitted air, were partially burnt inside the oven to supply the heat for carbonisation and the surplus gases were burnt to waste at the top charging hole. The heat from this gaseous combustion inside the oven together with the reflected heat from the brickwork of the arched roof of the oven allowed carbonisation of the coal charge to proceed from its surface slowly downwards to the floor of the oven. At the end of the coking cycle (usually 4 or 5 days) when there was no more evolution of gases, as indicated by diminishing gas flame and a drop in oven temperature, the brickwork of the oven opening was removed. The coke was then quenched by inserting a pipe with spray holes to spray water over the coke charge in the oven after which the coke was raked from the oven. The work of charging and levelling the coal, bricking and removal of oven opening, quenching and raking out the coke all required manual labour. As these ovens only carbonised a 5 to 7 ton charge of coal per cycle of 4 to 5 days, to produce 3 to 41/2 ton of marketable coke, the labour required per ton of coke was high.

Owing the greater fluidity of the filling now in use, it is sometimes necessary to resort to square-sets, both at the ground floor and above, the roofs and walls are generally enough to permit stoping without timber, except for ground and occasional stacks on the rills.Sufficient area of ground floor has been beaten out to start overhead stoping, the dome back is partly formed, with its apex a rise which connects with the mullock-pass reticulation.(Sce 1 showing this reticulation in diagrammatic form.)

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of eu, Ni, and other metals of economic interest are commonin orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released andbecome available for incorporation into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S-rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavengesCu and Ni, from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5·10 per cent SOg is given.Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Mg(Be, FeII)Os) with 5·50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen.Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.Zones of retrograde metamorphism are commonly found cutting or engirdling granulite terranes. As the "volatiles" for the new hydrous minerals of many of these zones are of deep-seated origin and may be juvenile, sulphide mineralization in them may also be of mantle origin. However, it is likely that much of the metal content could be scavenged from the granulites as they are down-graded by juvenile volatiles. Major Bouguer gravity anomalies delineate some granulite terranes (e.g. Fraser Block, Western Australia), and are related to deep-seated geosutures and mantle disturbances.Many granulite terranes are linear belts and appear to be welded to older cratonic blocks.

The process of design, measurement and review is essential if blasting is to continuously improve to meet the increasing productivity goals of most mining operations. To achieve continual improvements, many operators are turning to contractors to provide the necessary technology. Under this arrangement, the contractor becomes the supplier of a service rather than products and assumes some of the risks associated with blasting by guaranteeing the end result. If contractors are to obtain significant productivity improvements they must continuously improve every aspect of their business.

Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited has been carried out by dissecting operations into small elemental components, and accurately timing these elements. Over a wide range of observations, this has enabled standard time values to be calculated for all underground work.The application of the standard values is in calculating performances as a measure of work output and Performance Controls are kept on approximately two-thirds of underground employees. Through the Controls it has been possible to stimulate supervisory action to improve low performance, and to reduce delays and lost time.The values are used to calculate contract" prices, and anomalies in previous prices have been adjusted on work values and not on arbitrary standards. In out-of-the-ordinary circumstances, the request for a timestudy investigation has been made by both operatives and foremen, and the contract set following the timestudy analysis has been to the satisfaction of both parties.The range of values enables contracts to be applied to work which was previously performed on a day basis, resulting in improved performance.A natural corollary of timestudy is the analysis of methods, and in some cases method improvements have been introduced.It is anticipated that further investigations will be made on methods.INTRODUCTIONIn 1953, a Timestudy analysis of mining operations at North Broken Hill Limited was commenced under the guidance of management consultants. Its aim was, to determine standard time values for specific operations, which would provide management with a measure of productivity beyond the existing measures of tons or feet of advance, and also to determine whether increased output was available under existing operating conditions.

A high nugget effect and the presence of coarse gold characterises many vein-gold deposits. The effective sampling of these deposits is often difficult because of the relatively low concentrations involved and erratic nature of the gold. Geological complexity often compounds this effect. Underground development, in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining are often required to delineate Ore Reserves. Winzing is an historical technique that was used to gather geological and sampling data during underground exploration. It permits access to the mineralised structure below the current datum to help determine viability. Winzing has always been considered an arduous and dangerous task. Modern technology has led to the development of the Mobile Supersucker, essentially a giant vacuum cleaner. This system permits safe and efficient winzing activities, and allows the collection of bulk samples for grade estimation. Bulk samples from horizontal development have long been collected to help define mineable grade. However, when defining blocks below current development, there has been over-reliance on ineffective æsmall sampleÆ drill data. The Mobile Supersucker permits safe and cost-effective development of winzes and off-winze sublevels.

A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of a gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties. Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real-time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades. MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at a nickel concentrator plant. The project initially focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade without directly accounting for nickel recovery. The site later procured additional Blue Cube MQi analysers, resulting in the expansion of the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to incorporate recovery component in the performance. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The mining industry maintains a ælove-hateÆ relationship with water. Dewatering, aquifer, water disposal, irrigation, process water, tailings water, run-off water, seepage, leachate and sumps are all terms that are used on a daily basis in the mining industry, highlighting the numerous water usages on site and their associated quality. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2001), each year the mining industry consumes over 530 000 ML of water. The increasing recognition of water as a limited and valuable commodity, and the associated environmental concerns with the management of water disposal to the environment has led the industry into improving on-site water management. Progressively, water balance models and water reuse strategies are being developed, incorporating more sophisticated water treatment processes. By way of example, membrane technologies, once restricted to industries such as the pharmaceutical industry or the drinking water industry, are now entering the mining world with the aim of producing clean water of suitable quality for ore processing or for advanced treatment prior to release to the environment. This paper will provide a review of the threats and opportunities linked to water use and recovery/reuse in the mining industry in Australia. It will open with an overview of current water usage and associated quality for various mineral industries and continue with identifying the threats and limitations associated with the quality of available water. It will then present how newly developed water treatment technologies and assessment tools can be incorporated into the system to enhance the recovery and reuse of water on site, reduce the risks associated with securing long-term water supply and further improve production, environment and safety (health risk control).

The oxidation of nickel sulphide and copper sulphide concentrates, and coal, has been studied under non-ignition and ignition conditions using Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Thermogravimetry (TG). The non-ignition reaction was favoured by slow heating rates < 10°C min-1), low masses < 10 mg) and an air atmosphere. Under these conditions, the typical stepwise oxidations of the various sulphide minerals present in the concentrate were observed as resolved exothermic peaks in the DTA curves and weight losses in the TG curves. Above a heating rate of 10°C min-1 , sample masses in excess of 10 mg and an oxygen atmosphere, an ignition reaction was induced, as indicated by a major high energy exotherm in the DTA curve and a major rapid weight loss in the TG curve. The ignition temperatures of the minerals under ignition conditions, found for 15 mg samples heated at 20°C min-1, were 434°C for the nickel sulphide concentrate, 372°C for the copper sulphide concentrate, and 230°C for the coal. By plotting a curve for mass against ignition temperature at constant heating rate and extrapolationto zero mass, a value of 470°C was obtained for the mass independent ignition temperature of the nickel sulphide concentrate. Ignition temperatures and extents of reaction at various temperatures were obtained using the TG technique in a novel manner which produced heating rates of 4500°C min-1. Under ignition conditions, the oxidations approximate to flash smelting conditions.
