Within the context of acid mine drainage (AMD) associated with mining activities worldwide there has been a tremendous research effort to determine the extent of AMD and assess the influencing factors controlling this process. However, the majority of the current approaches focus on local and regional scale case studies and do not provide a global scale picture of AMD potentials. This study attempts to develop a method aiming at a global environmental impact assessment related to AMD. To confine the complex topic this study concentrates on acidic emissions from heaps in consequence of copper mining processes. In order to pursue this approach two factors are of significant advantage: a comprehensive environmental data base of more then 600 copper sites worldwide and a method which has been developed and proven to be successful in assessing environmental impacts related to land use. Current and future research efforts focus on using this background knowledge to enable both a comparison between sites and a categorisation of sites according to emission estimates.

It is quite well known, although not so well documented, that radio noise is generated during rock fracture. Radio noise has also been observed during severe earthquakes. The source has been thought to be the fracturing of the rock, although the mechanism has never been unequivocably proven. A study of these radio emissions may provide insight into rock dynamics prior to seismic events, and after blasting. A programme of electric-field recordings has been undertaken at Brisbane quarries during multi-hole blasting. Preliminary analysis has shown that three types of signal may be distinguished. They are hole detonation, rock fall and post blast relaxation signals. It is thought that information about the blast, and the fracture of the rock, may be ascertained from these Signals.

The objective of this paper is to provide a broad qualitative perspective of the needs and costs of infrastructure associated with typical mining projects. Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. As depicted in Figure 1, infrastructure acts as the link between the technological heart of a project and the outside world.

The depth of underground mines has been increasing due to several factors, such as material demand growth and improving technology. It is a challenge to understand severe failure mechanisms such as spalling, which is caused by induced high stress. To investigate this failure mechanism under high stress conditions, intact rock blocks with small size tunnel were tested at the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). The range of rocks, such as sandstone and granite, were drilled (200 mm hole) and tested using a servo-controlled 450 t capacity INSTRON machine. The acoustic emission sensors were attached to the block mass during the experiment to investigate the seismic response prior to spalling failure. The effect of the ground support system towards the failure was also examined by comparing the seismic response of the various ground support schemes.CITATION:Kusui, A and Villaescusa, E, 2016. From March to May of 1963, the Bureau of Mineral Resources carried out an experimental aeromagnetic survey at Cobar, New South Wales, to field test a proton-precession magnetometer installation in the Cessna aircraft VH-GEO. The Cobar area was chosen as considerable information was already held on the Earth's magnetic field there, which was known to provide a range of anomalous areas that are not excessively disturbed.A procedure for survey flying and methods for processing data were developed during the survey. Contour maps of the aeromagnetic results were produced in the field. The experimental survey was successful in outlining magnetic anomalies in detail.INTRODUCTIONSince 1951 the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (B.M.R.) has carried out an airborne magnetometer exploration programme with DC.3 aircraft carrying fluxgate magnetometer equipment. Recently a proton-precession magnetometer was developed by the Design and Development Group of the B.M.R. for observatory use. One unit modified for airborne use was installed in the Cessna light aircraft, VH-GEO. The Cessna was modified structurally to take the magnetometer, associated bird, and winch gear.The proton-precession magnetometer has many good features.1. The outbreak of open fires underground cause disturbances to the conditions of the mine ventilation process. Thermal and chemical effects due to fire create unsteady, transient states in airflow and the spread of combustion products in the mine ventilation network. Changes in airflow have an influence on the fire, constituting a sort of feed-back between the fire and the ventilation process. This paper deals with a numerical simulation method, which enables the determination of transients caused by fires. The mathematical model, of the simulation method considered, has been based upon a: simple model of combustion of fuel in the airway, unsteady exchange of heat between the fire, airflow and surrounding rocks, airflow in mine ventilation networks and the theory of heatflow in the rocks. Initial and boundary conditions allow the determination of a set of parameters describing the airflow, the propagation of combustion products, the tempera- ture of the fire and flow etc. due to the fire. The simulation method, facilitates a graphical presentation of the spread of combustion products throughout the network. The simulation method has been prepared for an IBM PC/AT Computer.

The Central West of New South Wales is emerging as a significant metallogenic province. The development of Northparkes Mines (North Limited) and the Cadia Hill deposit (Newcrest) are establishing NSW as a highly prospective porphyry copper-gold province. Exploration in the area has been further buoyed by the Ridgeway discovery by Newcrest near Cadia. The fact that the Ridgeway prospect was discovered 300 m below surface under Tertiary basalt cover indicates that surface prospecting can no longer be considered alone as an adequate method to find significant new deposits.

Studies of the morphology of seamounts within the Hawaiian, Line Islands, Gilbert and Phoenix Seamount groups indicate that the morphology and size distribution of seamounts vary significantly from one seamount group to another. The Line Islands group appears to be the most complicated of all the groups studied thus far. This group is complicated by reactivation of volcanism, which has superimposed volcanics on sedimentary rocks. These seamounts display abundant volcanic features on their summits. Seamounts within the Hawaiian seamount chain display a marked absence of volcanic features due to the . presence of thick carbonate caps. Reef platforms and sealevel benches are very common on these seamounts but are absent from seamounts in most other seamount chains in the central Pacific. Slope angles vary regionally between seamount groups. The minimum slopes are found on Necker Ridge in the central Pacific basin. The maximum slopes are found on ridge-crest seamounts. Roughness increases proportionally with mean slope angle.

Many of the large refrigeration plants used in, the cooling systems on deep South African gold mines are situated on surface where they are exposed to seasonally and diurnally varying climatic conditions, and to a diurnally varying demand for cooling made by the mine. It has been traditional to accommodate the seasonal variation in climate by manual control applied to the plants at appropriate times of the year, and the plants have normally been specified to conform passively to the diurnal variations. This paper introduces new strategies for the active automatic control of the plants on a diurnal cycle, and shows that attractive benefits in energy and chilled water resource management can be accrued through the use of these strategies. The results have been derived through the modelling and simulation of a representative refrigeration plant.

This paper investigates dry drilling as a feasible alternative to meet current requirements for improvements in mining productivity in an increasingly competitive world.A field test program was conducted in the surface facilities of a hard rock mine in Sudbury, Canada, to investigate the potential use of dry drilling in underground bulk mining as a conceivably faster and more economical method than wet drilling. The test work consisted of the monitoring of advance rates and bit life while a series of 165 mm diameter holes, wet and dry, were drilled with compressed air at both mine (0.69 MPa) and high (1.72 MPa) pressure levels. The results indicate that penetration rates can be increased by approximately 24 per cent by drilling dry with high air pressure and by approximately 27 per cent by drilling dry with mine air as compared with wet drilling under the same conditions. Dry drilling also has the effect of increasing bit life by up to 69 per cent. An economic analysis for typical hard rock mines indicated that drilling productivity and cost savings can be increased by approximately 23 per cent when dry drilling is utilised.The testing program indicates that dry drilling has the potential to become a feasible technique with regard to performance, productivity and costs.

A selection of Australian washed coal samples was examined to determine the effect of sample hydrophobicity (rank) and particle size on froth stability in the flotation process. The results indicate distinct rank-based variations in froth volume and stability for flotation tests conducted without the use of collector, over a series of particle size distributions.High-rank coals showed a greater tendency to generate stable, high-volume froths than coals of lower rank. Implications for circuit design and operation are outlined.

There are numerous detrital diamond deposits worldwide with uncertain or disputed links to known primary kimberlite/lamproite sources. In this study, we utilise 40Ar/39Ar dating of clinopyroxene inclusions in diamonds as a provenance tool applied to the mega-placer deposits along the West Coast of southern Africa. These data demonstrate that most West Coast diamonds originated known Cretaceous kimberlites on the Kaapvaal craton with negligible input from proximal Permian glacial deposits. The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the Queensland Mines Department are engaged in integrated regional- and deposit-scale studies in the Burdekin Falls-"Conway" area, about 100km southeast of Charters Towers (Fig. 1). The regional work augments recent mapping in the Mount Coolon area farther south (Hutton et al., in prep.). These studies are aimed at improving understanding of gold mineralisation and its geological setting in the Drurunond Basin and associated rocks. Knowledge of the regional stratigraphic- structural framework and setting of mineralisation has until now been based on investigations dating from the early to mid 1960's (mainly Bowen 1:250 000 Sheet; e.g. Paine et al., 1974; Wyatt et al., 1971), and on regional syntheses (Olgers, 1972; Levingston, 1981). Some recently explored epithermal gold occurrences in the region have been interpreted on the basis of this early work as being hosted by the Late Carboniferous Bulgonunna Volcanics. The objective of our field research was to refine the regional geology, paying particular attention to the Bulgonunna Volcanics. The results summarised here indicate that unnamed Devonian-Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the northern Drummond Basin and mid to late Palaeozoic granitoids are much more extensive, and the Bulgonunna Volcanics much less so, than was previously recognised.

Although the bromo-cyanide or Diehl process for the extraction of gold from its ores is used on several of the Kalgoorlie mines, very little information has been published on the original process, and no details are available from the various mines now using it. The following description of the process as carried on at the Hannan's Star plant, where several modifications were introduced by the author, will therefore be of interest to mining men, and it is hoped that some discussion on this paper will provide further useful information to the mining community.The process was first installed on the Hannan's Star mine, where a full working plant was erected by the London-Hamburg Co. In their contract they guaranteed a 91 per cent. extraction on a sulphide ore of 15 dwt value. This was considered a very high extraction at the time, and the plant successfully carried out its work.The new features in the process were the finer grinding of the ore, for which purpose the tube mill was introduced, and the addition of a solution of bromo-cyanide to the vats under ordinary cyanide treatment, whereby a higher extraction was obtained in a shorter time. The main difficulty in the process was the easy manufacture of the bromo-cyanide solution, but this was eventually overcome. The mixed salts now supplied by the LondonHamburg Co. are in every way satisfactory, and are supplied at such a price that the process compares favourably with any other from a cost point of view.

Australia contains some of the most productive mining areas and is characterised by ancient landscapes and highly variable hydrology. Historical mining of iron ore, coal and other minerals has targeted ore deposits located above water tables, and elevated above creek lines where possible to reduce cost. The downturn in mining caused by falling ore prices over recent years has triggered a drive to reduce cost, maximise yield and delay capital expenditure associated with opening new mines. So as the ore deposits with more favorable mining conditions become depleted there is an increased focus on mining ore associated with valley floors and creek lines. This is demonstrated by a regional assessment of the extent of Channel Iron Deposits (CID) and Iron Ore (Fe) Mines and Deposits in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia (Figure 1). A large proportion of these mines are, or plan to, target high grade CID ore associated with existing creek systems. Figure 2 shows outcropping and inferred sub-cropping CID extents, which suggests there are vast quantities of CID ore deposits throughout the Pilbara Region, intersected by major creeks which could be mined at some point in the future using creek diversions (Atkinson et al., 2017). A similar picture could also be produced for coal mining in Queensland, particularly in areas such as the Bowen Basin.While creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of these orebodies and extend the life of mine, creek diversions can involve substantial financial, social, environmental and regulatory risks that need to be carefully managed (Markham et al., 2017, Atkinson et al., 2017). This paper discusses the key issues and opportunities associated with diversion decision making. It highlights the importance of using a well-structured assessment methodology that allows key stakeholders to be part of the assessment process and is complementary to material presented in Atkinson et al., (2017). Design considerations for operational and closure designs are presented, as well as mine planning considerations, risks, cost saving opportunities and the benefits of an integrated approach to design. Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. Photoelastic and equivalent material model ling techniques for studying stresses and defor- mations and modes of failure in geological and engineering structures are described. The appli- cation of these techniques to the solution of tunnelling design problems is outlined. Models may contain heterogeneous components to simulate geological and man-made structures and may be two- or three-dimensional. Prototype construc- tion procedures and time dependent behaviour may be modelled. Examples of recent model studies carried out for the design of underground railway tunnels are given. Development of photoelastic and equi- valent material modelling techniques and facili- ties at the CSIRO, Division of Applied Geomech- anics are described, including a biaxial and triaxial frame for testing large scale two and three dimensional equivalent material models and components of full scale prototype structures.

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of the chrome-bearing ore chromite with sodium carbonate. In order to ascertain the influence on the extent of reaction of the replacement of Mg(II) for Fe(II) in the chromite spinel structure and the presence of acidic oxides in the gangue material, a series of roasting experiments was conducted using chromite materials from a number of different locations. The roast feeds and products were chemically analysed and the major compounds identified using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques.Mg(II) replacement for Fe(II) in the chromite structure does not appear to restrict the amount of "available" chromium for reaction.Under the test conditions, namely an atmosphere of pure oxygen, finely ground chrome-bearing material, a roast temperature of 950°C and the stoichiometric amount of sodium carbonate to react with the chromite, the yield of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be expressed as %yield = 104.5 -1.58 × %AI2O3 - 2.23 × %SiO2 for chromite samples containing alumina in the range 7.8 to 27.8 per cent and silica in the range 2.9 to 7.4 per cent.

From its mining lease at the northern end of Cohens Reef at Walhalla in the North Gipps- land mountains, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mining Company produced 13,695kg of gold, which at 1982 prices represents a value of about $140 million. In the period 1885 to 1908 the mine was one of Australia's principal reef gold producers, being top Victorian producer in six of these twenty-four years. Prior and subse- quent occupants of the lease produced an addit- ional 160kg of gold. The Extended and the other mines on Cohens Reef whilst contributing importantly to the financial resource of Victoria, were the sole important support for the substantial town of Walhalla that had grown up around them. When the mines closed, Walhalla gradually reduced from a bustling developed town to the present attractive mountain village so favoured by tourists.
