Analysis of the topography associated with large vertical strains measured in the upper crust in the Basin and Range and elsewhere in the US Cordillera shows that it varies systematically with upper crustal strain such that it decreases where tectonism has resulted in relative thinning. The magnitude of topographic deflection suggests that the amount of thickening or thinning of the upper crust cannot also be reflected in vertical motions of the Moho discontinuity, nor can the vertical strain be isostatically accommodated by inflow or outflow of asthenosphere, mantle lithosphere or mafic lower crust. Simple isostatic calculations show that the compensating medium had a density probably within 100-200 kg/m of average upper continental crust, thus indicating that the compensating medium lies within the crust and is probably in large part quartzose. This conclusion is in accord with laboratory experiments on the strengths of rocks, and with reflection seismograms in deformed regions which suggest that the Moho is generally flat beneath regions of extreme gradients in upper crustal vertical strain. The upper crust floats on a quartzose layer in the mid-crust which, under orogenic conditions, is apparently so weak that it behaves as a relatively inviscid fluid at geologic timescales (> 10,000 a) and subcontinental lengthscales (100-1000 km).

THE manufacture of Portland cement on a commercial basis dates back to the year 1824, when Joseph Aspidin, of Leeds, patented his process. It was, however, only within the past 25 years that the cement of to-day commenced its history, and during that period manufacturers have constantly tried to improve the grade of cement.The introduction of the rotary kiln at the opening of this century was the starting point of rapid development in the process of manufacture, and in the quality of the cement produced.Following on the rotary innovation came the wet process. This at first was used only where the raw materials were of a soft nature; but to-day nearly all classes of materials can be treated by this method. Oompared with the dry process, it allows for greater refinement of raw materials, more intimate mixing, better chemical combination, and economy in fuel. Taking advantage of this, the manufacturers in England and America are in a number of cases substituting the wet for the dry process.Subsidiary machinery throughout the factories, such as crushing and grinding mills, have also been vastly improved. The chemists, too, have done their share in the work. Long and careful research has proved the necessity for accurate proportioning of raw materials, thorough mixing, and very careful burning. All these factors combined have given us the product of to-day, which is consistent within very narrow limits, and far superior to that of the beginning of this cement era.

Consulting Engineers have been used in the mining and metallurgical industries for many years. The traditional role of the consultant overseas has been one of assisting with conceptual design right through to con- struction and commissioning as well as on occasion acting solely in specialist fields. This role developed because mining companies wished to concentrate on building up the permanent organisation they require to operate their mines and treatment plants without the traumas of increasing staff for the design and construction period and reducing it on completion. In Australia where there have been few individual minerals projects of magnitude (until recently) companies have looked after their own detailed engineering and construct- ion management employing consultants mainly in specialised fields.

In a recently completed AMIRA project, 20 samples were searched for gold mineralisation using the automated location facility (ALF) for rare phases on a scanning electron microscope in the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, Melbourne. The samples were submitted by mining companies in Australia, and Papua New Guinea, and included crushed ore samples, cyclone overflow and underflow products, a flotation concentrate, and 12 tailing samples. Their gold contents ranged from 600 to 0.2 g/t An. Native gold and gold minerals including a gold telluride, gold-silver tellurides, and a gold bismuth mineral, were located in the samples as free grains and associated with other minerals such as pyrite, magnetite, hematite, ankerite, copper sulphides, silicate minerals, and quartz. In the highest grade samples, both micron sized and 200 ¦m grains of gold were found with ALF. It would be difficult to locate such d wide size range of gold in a manual search. Gold mineralisation was located in the tailing samples assaying 0.4 g/t An and higher. In several tailing samples coarse grains of native gold over 40 p.m in size were located. One grain was estimated to have contributed 40 per cent of the gold in the sample. As well as locating gold mineralisation, the ALF examination resulted in the identification of uranium, mercury, and bismuth minerals in the samples. Knowledge of the distribution of these minerals in processing streams could be important in the operation of a concentrator.

Present roof bolting practices in the collieries of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. are outlined. Roof support has been improved since introducing roof bolts and it is hoped to increase the reliability of the bolts still further.Expansion-shell, and split and wedge roof bolts five to eight feet long are placed by "Atlas Falcon" and "Fletcher" roof bolters. Both anchorage and tightening have presented some problems.Good panel supervision is required if systematic roof bolting is to be properly co-ordinated with coal production without unnecessary delay to either. Successful roof bolting can only be the product of conscientious men and supervisors who are all convinced of its value. A rigid operational code should be established early and maintained.INTRODUCTIONRoof bolting is a method of support which is permanent and reduces or eliminates the need for other support; The method was pioneered in America and was first experimentally investigated in Australian collieries at Elrington in 1949 (McKensey, 1953). Pneumatic installation methods were employed. Subsequently, a method of using standard hand-held electric coal drills was developed at John Darling Colliery (Horseman, 1954). Pneumatic roof bolting equipment was first operated in the collieries of Australian Ironand Steel Pty. Ltd (A.I. &. S.) in 1951. Since then various hydraulically operated mobile machines have been installed in Australian collieries and these, together with improved pneumatic equipment, form the two present basic methods of placing ,roof bolts. Roof bolt anchorage is achieved by either split and wedge or expansion-shell bolts.The two broad types of roof bolting are 1. consolidation of strata, and 2. suspension support.

At Reefton, mesothermal gold deposits occur in the Ordovician Greenland Group basement and bituminous coal deposits occur in overlying Eocene Brunner Coal Measures. These different resource types occur in close proximity to one another in the same topography, vegetation and climate. Both types of resources have been mined for many years and as a result historic mining areas discharge water with chemistry reflecting the mineralogy of the deposits. Coal measures release natural acid rock drainage throughout the region due to oxidation of pyrite in coal and associated sediments. Levels of acidity are increased in mining areas, and pH near three is common. Gold mines contain pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite. Discharge waters from these sites have pH near seven because of the high acid neutralising capacity of the basement rocks. Both coal and gold mining sites have iron oxyhydroxide precipitates in drainage waters. These precipitates are more abundant at gold mining sites, and one deposit is up to 5 m thick. Iron oxyhydroxide at coal mine sites contain Zn (up to 89 ppm), Ni (up to 10 ppm), As (up to 163 ppm), Cr (up to 23 ppm), Pb (up to 16), and Cu (up to 11 ppm). Jarosite group minerals have been identified in the coalmine iron oxyhydroxide, although most of the material is amorphous. Gold mine iron oxyhydroxide contains Zn (up to 353 ppm), Ni (up to 592 ppm), Cr (up to 17 ppm), Cu (up to 72 ppm), Pb (up to 29 ppm), Sb (up to 230 ppm), and this material is particularly high in As (up to 20 wt per cent). Most of the material is amorphous but distinctive zones (mm scale) are As rich (up to 30 wt per cent As oxide). Pharmacosiderite, K2Fe4(As04)3 (OH)5.6.3H20, is a secondary mineral in one deposit. These iron oxyhydroxide deposits are useful indicators for the metals mobilised into the environment by oxidation in the historic workings.

This paper gives an overall view of the CSIRO-SGTE computer system for thermodynamic calculations. The basis of the system is the coupling of a large self-consistent numeric data bank of thermodynamic information to a modular set of application programs. These seven programs cover management of data files, calculation of thermodynamic properties for species and reactions, plotting of predomin- ance area diagrams, equilibrium and enthalpy balances for complex processes, analysis of thermodynamic efficiency and the estimation of unknown properties. The data bank contains a wide coverage of species and data types so that the system may be applied to many areas of chemistry and metallurgy.

Mining education in Ballarat has a long and proud history dating back to the 1870s. Today the School of Engineering continues this tradition at the University of Ballarat. The recent review of Tertiary Minerals Education by the Minerals Council of Australia has questioned the current situation regarding Minerals tertiary education in Australia and recommendations have been made regarding the future of minerals tertiary education. This paper initially examines the original recommendations made by the Minerals Council of Australia and assesses subsequent changes made to these recommendations. Secondly the paper outlines the future shape of mining education in the light of these recommendations given that they are implemented. Finally the future delivery of mining education is discussed, particularly with respect to the impact of modern technologies.

The effect of various types of solid carbonaceOlls reductants on the rate of fuming of zinc from lead blast furnace slag was investigated at I250°C.The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the rate of removal of zinc from slag depended primarily on the volatile matter contents of the reduclants. The effects of fixed carbon, moisture and ash contents were less significant.

The aim of this work is to assess the performance of different constructive solutions against explosions on the strength of masonry walls. The solutions tested, namely an external metal mesh, a glass fibre film on the external face of the wall and a basalt fibre film located on the inner face of the wall, have low to medium cost and are originally designed for other purposes, like seismic protection. Four cubic boxes 3 × 3 × 3 m were built using each of the solutions and typical masonry blocks. In the tests, a spherical plastic explosive initiated in the centre was placed at scaled distance of 2.9 m/kg1/3, so that moderate damage would be caused on the wall. In order to assess the performance of the explosive, pressure gauges were placed at the wall and at different distances from the explosion. Additionally, vibrations were monitored with seismographs in the far field and a high-speed camera was used to estimate the shock wave velocity during the tests. The resulting damage has been evaluated on 13 points of the external wall of each box using a rebound hammer. Damage maps have been drawn for each wall based on these measurements and damage has been assessed inside the box considering the fragments mass launched during the test. The use of external metal mess leads to a decrease of 34 per cent on damage of the external wall and 38 per cent reduction of spalling. The wear mechanisms of impregnated diamond drill bit matrices are complex and believed to be the key point in solving drill bit self-sharpening problems. A method has been developed to find the change in c,, the wear rate of matrices having different fracture toughness K_ at the increment of drill pressure P. The worn surfaces of specimens were placed under a scanning electron microscope to examine the wear patterns and wear mechanisms at different pressures, and were compared with the worn surface of a practical drill bit. A model is proposed that within a wide range of pressures there exist two different wear mechanisms and three wear regions for cemented car- bide matrix materials. In region one (linear region), at low pressure, the major wear mechanism is plastic deformation in which the preferential wear of the binder phase of the matrix results in the loss of WC, tung- sten carbide particles. Wear rate is controlled by hardness, H as Archard's formula predicts. Wear enters region two and three (non-linear region) simultaneously as pressure is being increased. Consequently, wear transfers to fracture mechanism in which micro-fracture occurs at the root of wear grooves and the material is removed mainly in piece and mass. It has been shown fracture toughness K,, plays a more important role than hard- ness H. It is concluded that for a specific drilling condition, the pressure on the matrix should be carefully controlled and a balance between hard- ness and toughness of the material is essential for a steady drilling Condition.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

The usefulness of laboratory studies - petrology and mineragraphy in the search for, and investigation of, mineral deposits should not be exaggerated, but it should not be overlooked, because such studies will always contribute to an understanding of the geology of the deposits, and can on occasions provide invaluable information not otherwise available. A few examples furnished by the investigations of the Mineragraphic Section of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation will show this.Petrology.In the early stages of the investigation of the King Island scheelite deposit, during the war, when the nature of, the deposit was not understood, a series of samples embodying the exposed rock types was submitted to the Mineragrap;hic Section for petrologicalexamination by the Mineral Resources Survey. It was at once apparent to the petrologist that the King Island scheelite ore was a contact metamorphic deposit, in which a series of argillaceous shales, calcareous shales, impure limestones and limestones had beenintensely metamorphosed. The shales had been converted to finegrained biotite and actinolite hornfels, according to their lime content, and the impure limestones to fine-grained diopside hornfels, garnetdiopside hornfels and garnet hornfels (calc-flint), the garnet being the lime variety grossularite. The limestones, however, after being first converted to marbles, had suffered intense pyrometasomatism, involving substitution of immense quantities ,of silica and' iron for lime and carbonate, and had been converted largely to a coarsegrained garnet rock, in which the garnet was the lime-iron variety, andradite. The silica and iron were derived from the mineralising solutions of the adja,cent ,granite. intrusion, responsible for the contact metamorphism, and were accompanied by tungsten and some molybdenum. The tungsten in the presence of so much mobile lime, was precipitated as schecelite, much of it finegrained and enclosed in or intergrown, with the andradite garnet or the quartz interstitial to the garnet.It was apparent that the King Island scheelite deposit, was a perfect example of selective pyrometallomatic replacement in a bedded contact metamorphic deposit. The bedded nature of the original rocks was preserved, and the scheelite was practically limited to the original limestone beds, 'Which had been so much more susceptible to replacement after recrystallization, than the other sediments. The further geological study of the deposit then resolved itself into the task of mapping the folding and faulting of the deposit, with bore cores to provide the stratigraphic sequence, and establish the number of scheelite-bearing beds.A second example is provided by a petrological investigation of the mineral composition and genesis of the talc deposits of the Gumeracha district of South Austral.ia, which was undertaken at the request of the South Australian ,Mines Department, in conjunctionwith mapping of these deposits. An amount of explosives, whether it be cylindrical, spherical, etc in configuration, with a hollow cavity in one face or end is known as a hollow or shaped charge. When this charge is initiated, a focussing of explosive energy will occur within this cavity. This focussing, or concentration of detonation products creates an intense localised force greater than just the simple detonation of a conventional explosive, (without a hollow cavity). If this hollow cavity explosive is directed against a target material this concentrated force is capable of creating a deeper penetration than the same amount of explosive without the hollow cavity. If a metallic liner material is used in the hollow cavity, upon detonation of the explosive this liner will form into a high velocity penetrating jet. Depending on the explosive type and the liner material's configuration the jet tip can travel up to 10 km/s. Linear shaped charges were developed using the abovementioned shaped charge concept but instead of being formed about an axis, they are elongated and constructed along the principal axis. Therefore instead of creating a narrow circular penetration jet, it forms a thicker planar cutting jet ideal for linear cutting purposes. Using Linear Shaped Charges (LSC) for pre-splitting is expected to result in more accurate directional fracture propagation, while minimising lateral micro fractures in the surrounding rock mass which is required to remain undamaged.

The function of a thickener is to optimise and accelerate the process of gravity sedimentation. The desired end product (be that maximised concentrated solids or clarified liquid) determines how the thickener is designed and operated.Significant internal research, together with extensive on-site piloting, by Outotec has resulted in the determination that the application of the appropriate amount and type of shear to hindered settling aggregates can result in a substantial change to the sedimentation process. A new patented technology, called shear enhanced thickening (SET), has been developed. SET results in considerable design implications for full-scale thickeners, including a substantial reduction in required footprint and/or significant increases in underflow density.The development of SET, combined with laboratory and pilot scale verification, will be discussed along with the introduction of this technology to a number of full-scale thickeners. Attention to the design of facilities for drainage, of both surface water and seepage, made it possible to attain, for a qam impounding residues from a concentrating mill, a more stable sand wall which can eventually be carried to a greater height.EXPERIENCE WITH No. 1 DAMResidue from the lead zinc concentrating mill, which treats the ore from the Rosebery and Hercules Mines, was pumped 3,600 ft. through a 5-in. diameter woodstave pipeline to the site of the dam. It was formerly delivered through a 4-in. steel pipeline.State laws prevent the residue being discharged to waste into the Stitt River. Furthermore, as a pyritic residue it is a potential source of sulphur.Between 1936 and 1956 more than 1,000,000 tons. of residue was paddocked. The run-of-mill product was roughly classified at the dam in a 6-ft. diameter cone classifier and the sand fraction was pumped by a 3-in. pump to the front wall of the dam across a shallow valley. The surface waters in regions with acid sulfate soils (ASS) can contain high concentrations of acidity and dissolved metals. These soils cause problems for agriculture, construction and development. The water can be neutralised through many techniques, however a technique that is low in maintenance and low in cost is most desirable. Due to the vast spread of ASS along AustraliaÆs coastline an expensive and high maintenance solution would not be cost-effective. In this study, a passive treatment system that has been used to neutralise acid rock drainage has been applied to treat ASS water. This system is commonly referred to as an oxic limestone drain (OLD) or an anoxic limestone drain (ALD) depending on the waters dissolved oxygen concentration. The system that has been developed for ASS has a similar closed system to the OLD or ALD, that traps the carbon dioxide which forms when limestone reacts with acidic water. It has been called a closed tank reactor (CTR) and is constructed by placing limestone into an airtight tank. A common problem that will occur when acidic water with a high concentration of dissolved metals reacts with limestone is the formation of metal oxy-hydroxide precipitates. These precipitates can coat or armour the limestone and reduce its reactivity. To minimise the accumulation of precipitates in the CTR, perforated subdrains have been installed. It is anticipated that high water pressure and flow through the subdrains will remove some precipitates. A sump has also been installed at the base of the tank to collect precipitates that settle under gravity. The CTR has been tested for 70 days at a sugar cane farm located at McLeods Creek, NSW. Within this time the sump and subdrains have been used to flush the system. An orange solution was produced during flushing and it is believed to contain iron and aluminium precipitates. The initial performance of the CTR raised pH by at least one unit. Almost all dissolved aluminium was removed and more than half the dissolved iron. The total titratable acidity ranged from 17 - 92 mg/L CaCO3 in the initial month of monitoring. After passing through the CTR the acidity was reduced to zero. The performance of the CTR during the last few days of monitoring decreased. This is believed to be due to a pulse of water with higher acidity and dissolved metal content that lasted a week. In this pulse, the acidity reached 307 mg/L CaCO3 and the total dissolved aluminium reached a maximum of 24 mg/L. Higher concentrations of dissolved metals may have been the cause for lower performance due to increased precipitation and coating on the limestone.

The aim of these analyses was to utilise the latest available production information for the Wandoo operation to determine the optimal blasting parameters, costing information and predicted results (fragmentation, muckpile shape and vibration). Much of the data used as input was made available from the information gathered during the excavation of the test pits during 1995. As with any æplanning stageÆ analyses, many assumptions were required to fill gaps in the available data. The calibration of computer blasting models was conducted using data from the last of the test pit blasts (this blast was carried out in material that closely resembled rock expected to constitute the bulk of the base case design pit). This calibration was refined using observation and experience based judgements to extend the accuracy of the predictions as far as possible. All the simulations were performed assuming that the blastholes will be wet (as instructed by BGM). This has consequently determined that the appropriate explosive for the simulations and the actual blasting will be a pumped emulsion/ANFO blend. The following blast design parameters were derived by determining a likely range of powder factor (from other similar scale gold mines) with a median value of 0.62 kg/m 3 being the powder factor arrived at through the field optimisation process conducted during the test pit excavation. The total swell/displacement percentage (volume after blast/volume before blast) largely determines the diggability of a well fragmented muckpile. Consequently where fragmentation is good any reduction of total swell will probably reduce diggabilty. Any reduction of diggability can and should be traded off against increased gold recovery. In most gold mines, diggabilty will be substantially compromised at the balance which produces the most profit. When these considerations are combined with the cost to drill and blast material, processing costs and the achievement of æacceptableÆ diggibility, the analysis becomes extremely complex and qualitative. Many trends are evident including:the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and maximum forward displacement (throw), see Figure 1; and the relationship between powder factor (for each blast design) and drill and blast cost per BCM, see Figure 2. The following blast designs are matched to each of three ore-tonnage alternatives (as supplied by BGM) (Table 1). They are all based on powder factor of 0.62 kg/BCM and are considered optimum from a mining æpoint of viewÆ. The costing of each design includes drilling, explosives and labour cost to load, stem and tie-in holes. Using the available rock data and relying heavily on the wall exposures in the test pit(s), it is the opinion of the author that between 20 per cent to 40 per cent of the final walls excavated in the Wandoo pit would be likely to have the angle between the dominant foliation and the wall plane that is well suited to presplitting and be cost-effectively served by presplit technique. The drilling cost for 125 mm blasthole is about $11.40 per drilled metre and the cost of 40 mm presplit explosive is about $140 per 25 kg (17 metre) case. This implies that the cost to drill and blast presplit on the above parameters would be about $10.90 per square metre of presplit face. The remaining wall area would be most cost-effectively delineated using modified production blasting techniques. This requires the use of modified parameters such as smaller hole diameters, smaller spacing/ burden, higher powder factor, free face firing, less rows per blast and longer delays. These altered blast parameters would usually be applied uniformly across the entire blast fired adjacent to the wall and this ætrimÆ blast would relieve burden away from the wall, into the pit. In simplest terms, this method relies upon maximised burden relief to minimise blast energy applied to the wall. It is only applicable where the material to be blasted is waste since the throw achieved is inconsistent with ore dilution control. The largest charge weight per hole for these analyses is 360 kg and the nearest domestic structure to the proposed Wandoo pit is about 6100 metres distant. From these parameters and assuming a worst case example of rock controlled site factor, the predicted ground vibration is 0.5 mm/sec that is about five per cent of the lower limit set down in AS 2187 part two (1993). This suggests that for the current location of neighbours, ground vibration will not be an issue for the Wandoo operation.
