With the continued drop in export coal prices (as measured in US$) delivered to the Pacific Rim market, and a fixed annual 12 per cent increase in overburden, Usibelli Coal Mine Inc was faced with the need to reduce mining costs substantially or else forfeit its foreign coal contractual commitment which amounted to about half of annual mine output. Management made a difficult and fortuitous decision to proceed with an engineered plan to switch from a two seam, extended bench dragline operation to a two seam, cast blast and spoil side operation. While down-sizing and cut-backs became the rule in all departments of the mine, the drilling and blasting budget was more than doubled. Most will agree that this is contrary to what usually happens when a mine is faced with down sizing. The more common scenario would have management target the drilling and blasting budget for decrease as a first priority to cutting cost, and then later witness a decrease in equipment performance leading to an increase in the production cost per tonne. Although Usibelli Coal Mine more than doubled its annual drilling an blasting budget three years ago, the overall stripping cost has be, reduced by more then 37 per cent.

RACE Quartz-calcite veins containing Au, As, W, Cu, Pb, Zn and Fe cross-cut Alpine Fault- related structures in the Alpine Schist of South Island, New Zealand. These veins, and some other related veins have been deposited by metamorphic fluids at 250¦C to >320¦C at pressures of a few hundred bars. The fluids were very variable in composition, with 0 to 50 mole % CO2 and 2 to 18 wt. % NaCl equivalent. Penetration of hot metamorphic fluids to shallow levels in the crust was facilitated by rapid uplift of hot rocks at a compressive plate margin. Fluid immiscibility at shallow levels caused concentration of salts and metals into the aqueous phase. Gold precipitation was caused by reduction by pelitic country rock and/nr dluILion by other aqueous fluids.

Since its enactment in 1991, the Resource Management Act (RMA) has generated both praise and criticism. The major criticism is in relation to the costs the Act poses to industry and the time it takes to work through the process. In response to such criticisms the Minister for the Environment has initiated a review of the implementation of the RMA. The Minister's proposals for reform have not yet been released and the discussion that follows is based upon the report by the Minister's Review Group which was released in September.

The basic rule for correct design of a sample plant is that all parts of the material being sampled must have an equal probability of being collected and becoming part of the final sample for analysis. However, this rule is often ignored in the design of sample plants to save capital costs. This is false economy, because the samples taken are likely to be seriously biased and the precision may be compromised. The introduction of bias is particularly serious, because no amount of replicate sampling and analysis will reduce bias once it is present and it is often quite difficult and expensive to subsequently rectify the problem due to space limitations around the primary sampling location. This is also true of secondary and tertiary sampling stages, particularly in terms of the relationship between particle size and retained sample mass. The best strategy is to seek expert sampling advice and design the sample plant correctly at the outset.

The small scale alluvial gold mining industry in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is c.irrently the only form of small scale mining carried out in this country. It already contributes significantly to the economy with current production estimated at 2 000-2 500kg per year. Until recently, small scale alluvial gold mining has been confined to simple panning and sluicing of high grade alluvial and colluvial deposits. Traditionally the small scale miner in PNG has only worked gravels with gold grades in excess of 500mg/m3. Grades of this order are required to justify the hard physical labour involved ~n hand operated small scale mining methods. .he introduction of higher throughput technologies such as trommels fed by hydraulic excavators has the effect of altering what constitutes an economically viable deposit. Mechanised techniques allow for the consideration of grades of almost half that level. The potential and opportunities for utilising this type of small scale mechanised mining in PNG are enormous with large areas of ground with gold grades running in excess of 250mg/m3 and often up to 2000mg/m3 throughout the country. An assessment of the current operating economics of this technology in the PNG context is the principal objective of this paper. Small to medium scale mechanised mining can potentially contribute significantly to the PNG economy particularly as it lies within the react-, of many PNG businessmen. Its potential is currently somewhat limited by a general lack of infrastructure and is also constrained by socio-political factors.

Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. In the technical sense, as well as in the professional sense, the word 'model' can have many meanings. More than 23 000 references were uncovered by a simple literature search on keywords ' MO D EL#. and. (META LLURG#. or. M I NERAL#)' . For the purpose of this paper, 'models' will be considered to be mathematical formulations which attempt to represent or approximate a process. The model may be purely, or a combination of: ò fundamental models, based on the laws of physics, chemistry and thermodynamics; ò semi-empirical or phenomenological models, where an intuitive concept of the process is formulated and found by testwork to fit observed behaviour; and ò empirical or 'black-box' models (including neural networks), where a mathematically convenient form is proposed and fitted. Even under this more restricted definition, which eliminates heuristic and statistical 'models', it is clear that the efforts expended in devising and using models have exploded during the years since the first APCOM Conference in 1961, benefiting from the dramatic decrease in the cost of computer power. This paper reviews the areas of usage of computer modelling in the metallurgical and mineral processing industries, from plant design, through off-line support, to on-line modelling and automatic control. In each area, frontiers of new development of the technology are mentioned. It is noted that, while modelling is now standard practice in design, it is not yet the norm in operating and controlling plants. The reasons for this partial acceptance are, it is argued, less related to the limitations of the technology than to the human and organisational factors involved in transferring technology to implementation.

Coal exploration and mine planning now use all the modem techniques to indicate geological hazards to a new or developing coal mine. Drilling, seismic and other sophisticated geophysical methods aim to increase the reliability of prediction of features which will inhibit mine development. But do they?. During the past 40 years, geological investigations for coal mines in New South Wales have ranged from the general observations of Eric Rudd, in the Southern Coalfield in the late 1940s to the very detailed examinations of roof strata by John Shepherd and others in the 1980s. Then, the large scale regional relationships between sedimentary and structural features often were ignored as the minute examination of seam roof strata became fashionable.

The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. Since the end of World War n, many important developments have taken place in the investigation of the phenomenon of brittle fracture in mild steel. Fractures in certain classes of welded ships, in welded bridges, penstocks, etc., focussed a great deal of attention on the interrelationships of design factors, service conditions, and steel quality on the generation of catastrophic failures.Much publicity has been given these major failures, and there is perhaps a tendency to forget that mild steel, under certain conditions, as well known to behave in a brittle fashion in a wide range of everyday engineering applications.For instance, many who are connected with the haulage and lifting of heavy loads will be familiar with the bright "crystalline" fractures of crane hooks and chains which sometimes follow sudden jarring; those concerned with the heavy pressing and shaping of steel plate will not be unaware that at times sudden brittle splits or tears will develop for no obvious reason in, say, rolled pipes or in dishings.In fact it will be evident upon reflection that in many cases the conditions which mild steel has to withstand during processing into an engineering part or structure are more severe than those it wili be called upon to endure during service. Such investigations involve four elements: developer, consultant, approving authority and the public. It is essential that the consultant provide technical competence, speed and efficiency, impartiality and credibi- lity. Systematic ICPES (Inductively coupled plasma emmission spectrometry) analysis of magnetic concentrates from drainage samples has been used to discriminate concentrates dominated by magnetite from those dominated by pisolites, presumably maghemite-rich. In addition, a set of spurious zinc enhancements was recognised and explained with the help of mineralogical data, and systematically isolated using chromium as a Discriminator.

Herbert Stream, a tributary of the Waimangaroa River on the Stockton Plateau, has elevated metal concentrations and low pH characteristic of acid mine drainage (AMD). Dissolved aluminium concentrations average 8.3 ppm, iron 1.4 ppm, manganese 0.69 ppm, and zinc 0.12 ppm and pH ranges from 2.8 to 3.2. Flow rates range from 2.3 to 26.6 L/s with an average of 5.3 L/s. To determine the effectiveness of different treatment strategies, a small amount of the AMD was diverted through three small-scale passive AMD remediation systems over an eight month period. These included a reducing and alkalinity producing system (RAPS), a limestone leaching bed (LLB), and an open limestone channel (OLC). Both the RAPS and the LLB performed well, effectively removing metals and restoring pH. The RAPS lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 97%, manganese 95%, and zinc 80% and the LLB lowered aluminium concentrations by up to 99%, iron 99%, manganese 92%, and zinc 91%. The pH was restored to between 6.4 and 7.4 by the RAPS and to between 7.3 and 7.9 by the LLB. The OLC performed well as long as the residence time was similar to that of the other treatment systems. OLC removal rates for aluminium was up to 99%, iron 94%, and manganese 21%, and the pH was restored up to 5.6. Due to its simplicity and effectiveness, it is proposed the LLB be constructed to fullscale size to treat the entire Herbert Stream.

Renison Mine was developed as the first all diesel mine in Australia. The foresight of the early planners in committing the Mine to Decline access has paid dividends in the past two decades with Renison Mine establishing itself as one of the most productive underground mines in the world. The excellent productivity has also resulted from the development of mining equipment technology, both on the part of the equipment suppliers and through the coordination of the Mining, Automotive and Technical Design Sections at Renison Mine. Constant improvements in truck and loader design, the design of specific equipment to carry out specialized tasks such as installation of services, scaling and ground support and the conversion to electrically powered equipment have been ongoing at Renison. Currently, larger scale trucks are being investigated for ore and waste haulage due to increased haulage distances and production requirements. It appears as though an articulated low profile truck of around 50 tonnes capacity may provide the short term solution based on the performance data available.

The Buttle Lake camp is in central Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada. The camp hosts world-class polymetallic volcanogenic deposits of Devonian, Frasnian age (370Ma). This paper describes an on-going sulphur and lead isotope study of the major orebodies.Sulphur isotopes were determined for sulphides (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite and galena) and sulphate (barite). Sulphide analyses are markedly different from sulfate. The differences are explained below in a unique model.Sulphide isotopic compositions cluster tightly (del34S -6.7 to 4.6), and demonstrate isotope reversals. Calculated temperatures of correctly ordered mineral pairs are unrealistically high. We conclude that the sulphides are in isotopic disequilibrium, presumably because of rapid precipitation from a quenched plume in an anoxic environment, and because of subsequent sulphide replacement.

Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. INTRODUCTION Firedamp drainage applications are incr- easing world wide as mining engineers strive for improved safety and security, and further concentration of coal output. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. A Devonian metallogenic province is extended northwards from central Queen- -sland to the Burdekin Basin in the Charters Towers Gold and Mineral Field. Devonian sediments of the Burdekin Basin are intruded by mineralised quartz felspar porphyry which occurs as pebbles in Upper Devonian conglomerate. A mineralised volcanic complex lies on the crest of an anticline in Devonian sediments.Red siltstone is slurried and reduced to pyritic hornfels over folded limestone.A thick wedge of volcanogenic conglomerate overlain by marine shale lies on the mineralised rim of an ocean which suffered cataclysmic changes during Late Devonian times.

The operators of the iron ore railroads in the Pilbara faced problems of excessive wear between rail and wheels as the tonnage hauled increased in the early 1970's. Joint research projects were begun between Hamersley Iron, Mt Newman Mining and the BHP Melbourne Research Laboratories to study these problems and recommend solutions. The particular problems of wheel rail interaction were solved by asymmetrical profile grinding of the rail and modifications to the machining of the wheels. Rail materials were improved through increasing yield strengths by alloying and by heat treatment. Wheel materials were improved by alloying. The economic benefits of these improvements have been demonstrated by much reduced re-rail requirements and other reduced maintenance costs.
