Experimental results are presented for the anode overvoltage as a function of current density for different alumina concentrations in an alumina reduction cell. Voltage changes due to the electrolyte resistance and also the decomposition voltage, have been evaluated as a function of alumina concentration and anode current density. From these values of voltage, changes in the total cell voltage have been derived for changes in alumina concentration for different anode current densities. The results show that for each operating current density there exists a discrete alumina concentration that defines a minimum reduction cell voltage. Discussion is made about potential savings in power consumption when the alumina concentration is controlled.INTRODUCTIONThe standard procedure in the aluminium industry when analysing the cell-voltage required for the Hall-Heroult process for reduction of alumina, is to subdivide the total voltage into the following components (e.g. Pearson, 1955; Maritell, 1960).1. ohmic drop through busbars and joints2. ohmic drop through cathode lining3. ohmic drop through anode4. ohmic drop through electrolyte5. overvoltage at anode6. electrolytic decomposition voltage.(Overvoltages ,at the cathode are of negligible magnitude at all practical current densities.)It is understandable that the voltages assigned for each factor invariably differ for different workers...

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. Taiwan is situated between Ryukyu and the Philippines with 35,960 sq. km of area, being slightly larger than Belgium It has roughly a spindle-shaped outline with a longitudinal axis extending in a roughly north-south direction. Geologically, Taiwan is extremely complex in terms of its tectonic setting in the convergence zone between the Asian continent and the Philippine Sea Plate. To the east of Taiwan, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Ryukyu island arc, and to the south of Taiwan the Philippine Sea Plate overrides the Asian plate along the Manila Trench. Taiwan, therefore, occupies an unstable region between these two well-defined subduction systems of opposite polarity (see the following block diagram).

Sphalerite flotation without Cu activation in the presence of iron ions has been reported and studied as a function of pH, dissolved oxygen content and pulp potential with both single mineral and ore samples (Leroux, Rao and Finch, 1987; Xu et al, 1992; Zhang, Rao and Finch, 1992). The flotation was attributed to ferric hydroxy xanthate. As a prelude to surface analysis to try to identify the species responsible, bulk precipitates formed from iron salt and xanthate solutions under different conditions were obtained and analysed. Analysis techniques included ultraviolet spectroscopy,infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Mossbauer spectroscopy. It is tentatively concluded that the bulk precipitates contain three ferric components, two hydroxy xanthates (Fe(OH)2X and Fe(OH)X2) and iron oxide (FeO.).

In the upper coal surface in the Latrobe Valley, craters known locally as fireholes have developed due to prehistoric coal fires. They can be several hundred metres across and up to fifty metres deep, and are now filled with overburden materials varying from hard baked clays to very soft lacustrine clays. In addition to reducing coal reserves, continuous mining operations are seriously affected by fireholes. Large undulations in the upper coal surface result in a mixture of coal and overburden on the upper mining levels. The very soft lacustrine clays are unstable in the mine batters and the overburden dump, are difficult to handle on the bucket wheel excavator/conveyer system, and have insufficient bearing capacity for the large bucket wheel excavators. Early identification is essen- tial and both drilling and dynamic core penetrometer have been exten- sively used. However, this has not proved adequate in locating and defining the extent of all fireholes, due largely to their irregular shape. To overcome this a range of geophysical techniques has been trialled with very promising results. A trial area has been covered on a twenty metre grid using gravity and Geonics EM34 conductivity measurements and the same area has been covered at a closer spacing with high resolution magnetics. Image processing of contoured magnetic, EM34 conductivity and residual gravity data has resulted in very good correlation with drilling data.

The productivity and economic success of a German hard coal mine is attributed to the high productivity of a small number of operation points; however high rates of production are associated with increased gas emission at the working sites. Therefore modem high technology is required in order to reach the planned production rate, since high methane concentrations often cause unplanned breakdowns in operation. The optimised simulation of gas emission is a fundamental planning tool for mine design as well as for determining the potential of a coal deposit and has increased in significance over the last years. Methane-INFO enables the three-dimensional, graphical simulation of a working site taking account of different aspects such as the mine design, ventilation, production rate, geology, seam quality, gas exhaustion, etc. The following paper gives a short overview over the benefits of the discussed system.

The relative infrequency of fatalities and other serious events can give them an appearance of being random, of being beyond any reasonable degree of anticipation and prevention. In fact, the vast majority of these events result from exposures that are identifiable, measurable, and manageable. The lessons of prominent incidents, such as the Space Shuttle Columbia, OxyÆs Piper Alpha, Esso Longford, BP Texas City, Massey Mine, as well as lessons from single fatality events, is that alongside the proximate causes of each incident, there also coexisted an underlying fabric of systems, mechanisms, and culture that allowed risk in the workplace to persist and often to become normalised. All of these ingredients of the organisationÆs safety fabric lend themselves to the influence and intervention of senior leaders. The difficulty is that traditional injury prevention paradigms are not sufficient for addressing the precursors that lead up to catastrophic and fatal events. A recent study of such events, led by Dr Thomas Krause concluded that the descriptive aspect of HeinrichÆs safety triangle is useful, but that the predictive aspect is not. The study surfaced reasons why a reduction in less serious injuries does not necessarily correspond to a proportionate reduction in catastrophic and fatal risks. This presentation expands on the findings to include the concept of exposure to the event potential linked to precursor events and the framework for leading an organisation to be both cognisant and effective in eliminating such events.CITATION:Russell, R, 2012. This paper describes the ENVIB software system, which has been developed in a menu-driven form to aid in the monitoring and assess- ment of vibration caused by routine blasting operations and for research and development projects. The paper gives an outline of the capabilities of the system by means of screen-dumps and a general descriptive commentary. Technical notes have been added where appropriate to further describe the system. The ENVIB system covers: I . Analysis of blast vibration results, and preparation of graphs and tables for control and estimation purposes. 2. Effects of atmospheric conditions and air vibration propagation. 3. Real-time acquisition and analysis of analogue blast vibration sig- nals directly from transducer equipment or from FM tapes. 4. Analysis of digital files on floppy disc or transferred via the serial port from blast monitoring equipment. 5. Transfer function calculation for structure response studies.

Although generation of environmentally harmful hydrogen sulfide is considered to be related to sour gas fields, sweet gas reservoirs and waste fluids, travertine springs and geothermal fields may also produce acid gas (H2S and CO2) under certain conditions. The potential parameters influencing such a possibility need to be fully investigated to evaluate the extent of the consequences and predict hydrogen sulfide generation accordingly. Reports on hydrogen sulfide production at different regions and fields were gathered worldwide for the cases when some of them did not have such a problem previously. In order to inspect different aspects of these case studies, some other regions with no hydrogen sulfide content were selected as control. In all cases water samples were taken carefully for chemical analysis in the laboratory. Besides, mineral compositions were characterised in some cases for better evaluation. In order to give a thorough prospect of hydrogen sulfide production, a geochemical model was prepared. In situ engineering geological conditions, especially pressure and temperature, were assigned in the model to investigate the possibility of H2S generation using PHREEQC software. The results of modelling revealed that although many similarities existed between mineral compositions of the cases, certain formations were particularly prone to hydrogen sulfide generation. For better evaluation, important exchangeable cation ratios such as potassium/sodium, calcium/magnesium and ion proportions like sulfate and chloride were calculated as trends of the formations. As expected, the model could successfully monitor a higher ratio of SO42- and Cl- in potential H2S generator formations. Wide variation in percentage of HCO3- was considered as a secondary observatory parameter for better estimation. In addition, it was noticed that higher anion content created an environment ready to absorb any cations and this makes H2S generation easier. Finally, using correlations between predictors and estimators for low depth and deep samples defined the degree of effectiveness for every sample.

Both innovation and excellence are desirable attributes of education, as they are also markers in the progression of the human race, but how attainable are they? The interaction of minerals and humanity provides a special insight into the development of both criteria, from the discovery that chert cuts, through the Bronze Age and the first use of metal alloys for implements, to using coal, oil and uranium as sources of fuel. However, there have been many hiccups along the way, where excellence in one respect has meant disaster in another. Examples are in the exploitation of asbestos, and in traditionally poor work practices in mining, both contributing to the widespread public belief that minerals and mining are ecologically undesirable. Yet is this perception based on the unrealistic expectation of innovation and excellence being simultaneous qualities of any given process? Common sense born of experience indicates that the journey from one, to the other, is usually a long and often tedious process, with much trial and error before excellence is attained. In our time, the partnership between academia and industry is the usual pathway to achieve it. Even so, we should take care that innovation does not become overwhelmed by the pursuit of excellence: as history clearly demonstrates, humanity depends upon both.

Calculations of the temperatures of metal, coke, and gas at any level in the cupola furn~ce can be carried out by means of heat balances, using data obtained from experiments with an 18 in. experimental cupola. The results can, to a certain extent, be verified by means of heat transfer calculations.The curves thus obtained, showing the variation of temperature with height in the cupola, provide a valuable picture of the heat transfer processes in a shaft 'furnace.INTRODUCTIONThe Brown Coal Research Laboratory, of the University of Melbourne, has been engaged in recent years on a programme of iron-melting tests in an experimental cupola furnace.Although the ultimate aim of this work is to develop brown coal char as a cupola fuel, most of the experimental work so far has been with conventional coke. The testing programme was designed to provide information on the effect of variables such as blast rate, metal-coke ratio, and coke size on the overall melting process, e.g. melting rate, temperature of metal tapped, and stack gas composition.However, in many cases data were obtained on conditions inside the furnace by measuring temperatures and gas compositions. The aim of the work described in this paper was to qevelop a method for using this data to obtain information on the processes taking place in the cupola.Very little research has been done on the combustion of fuels in shaft furnaces. Early work on this subject, as well as the initial stages of the Brown Coal Research Laboratory's programme, has been discussed by Evans (1959). The use of probes for obtaining information on conditions in the interior of a shaft furnace was pioneered by Belden (1913)...

The valuation of exploration properties which contain no identified resources or reserves is the most subjective of all valuation tasks likely to be carried out by a geologist. The geoscience rating method proposed by Kilburn (1990) recognises this inherent subjectivity but also attempts to apply some discipline to the valuation process. Some other methods used for valuations of this type clearly lack discipline and are open to misuse and abuse. The Kilburn method essentially requires the practitioner to justify all aspects of the valuation process. The valuer must specify and, more importantly, quantify aspects which enhance or downgrade the intrinsic value of each property. The intrinsic value is called the ""base acquisition cost"" (BAC) and it represents the average cost to identify, apply for and retain a base unit of area of title. The BAC and base unit of area both vary with different types of exploration and mining title but remain constant for similar types of titles in the same mineral tenure regime. In the Kilburn Method the enhancement/ downgrading factors are determined by the geotechnical prospectivity (Kilburn Method) within the title. A modified version of the Kilburn Method presented here (""Modified Kilburn Method"") also focuses attention on other real variables besides the geotechnical attributes which influence valuations of this type, viz., competition for tenure and activity in the markets in which the exploration properties are being traded. The most active such market at present is the stock market. By utilising uniform BACs and base units of area (for similar titles) for all exploration properties (in practice in Australia this is only possible within a particular State or Territory), the method exposes the valuer's opinions of each of these variables to the scrutiny of the investor. The investor (or his professional adviser) is afforded the opportunity to directly compare valuations on different properties by different practitioners and can assess how the final valuation is weighted in respect of geotechnical prospectivity, competition for tenure, and stock/financial market sentiment. No other method currently employed in Australia to value mineral exploration properties affords the investor this `luxury', which some may argue is their right.

Nickel-iron sulphide mineralization at Nepean, Western Australia occurs within a small Archaean greenstone outlier in granite south of the main Coolgardie greenstone belt. Individual sulphide ore bodies are situated near the foot- wall contact of simply-differentiated en echelon ultramafic sills that have intruded a sequence of sulphide-bearing metasediments and amphibo- lites. The paper describes a detailed section through the No. 2 ultramafic sill and its associated sulphide ore zone, which gave Metals Exploration N.L. the first significant nickel discovery in the Nepean area in 1968. The sill is variable in thickness up to 30 m along a strike length of 600 m, and is truncated to the north by pegmatite intrusion and pinches out to the south. The body has border zones of pyroxenetic composition, now represented by felted aggregates of chlorite and amphibole, and a central peridotitic core in which olivine and orthopyroxene are concentrated towards the base. Textures within the peridotite are dominated by large lath-shaped olivine grains and their serpentine pseudomorphs, which delineate triangular areas composed of talc, chlorite, and amphibole. Orthopyroxene occurs in large ovoid patches and is often replaced by Talc.

During 2001 the Ridgeway Gold Mine, driven by company initiatives and recent NSW legislation (General Rule 2000), developed and implemented Major Hazard Management Plans to control significant hazards identified at the underground mine. The paper presents the objectives, issues, outcomes and process involved in the development and implementation of the plans at Ridgeway. The sharing of the experience gained and an overview of the intended way forward will offer a valuable insight for other mines considering embarking on a similar journey.

The market has become highly competitive for engineering and equipment vendors, who are challenged to reduce costs while improving efficiency and productivity of mine operations through plant improvements and expansions. Although conveyor transfer systems account for a small percentage of the infrastructure cost of a mine, they form an integral part of the process supply chain. Malfunctions or suboptimal performance can result in substantial financial cost from delayed start-up, unscheduled downtime, reduced throughput and increased maintenance costs.Discrete element modelling (DEM) is a powerful simulation method used to virtually prototype and test the performance of transfer equipment throughout a design cycle. When developed and applied correctly, DEM can provide insight into performance that exceeds the traditional analytical methods, especially when dealing with complex ore properties, behaviour and/or situations.Using case studies sourced from the authors’ recent research and industrial project work, this paper will address the industry goal to increase efficiency and productivity as well as the methods available to the engineers responsible for delivering designs that meet the aims of this strategic approach.The main focus of the paper will be the new calibration technology, which has been developed by the authors to generate DEM material models that are linked to real-world properties and flow behaviours via unique dynamic testing and innovative parameter calibration methods. These calibrated DEM material models can be deployed by engineers into their existing workflows, whether it be for feasibility studies, concept or final design, plant troubleshooting or optimisation.This new technology allows engineers to gain greater insight than that provided by traditional approaches to the design of transfer chutes and other process equipment and also allows informed design decisions to be made that meet industry efficiency and productivity requirements.CITATION:Grima, A P, Curry, D and Wypych, P W, 2015. The report by Baker (1958, p. 27) of krennerite in contact with gold in a specimen from the 2500 ft level, Phantom South lode, Great Boulder mine, Kalgoorlie, led the writer to look into this further, since Cabri (1965) reported that the assemblage krennerite-gold was unstable between 238° and 356° C, and possibly down to room temperature.Dr. G. Baker very generously provided the writer with two chips from the same rock specimen (No. 14 as labelled from the mine) in which the krennerite gold assemblage was reported to occur. These were examined by polished section and x-ray diffraction techniques and returned to the classified collection of the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of CSIRO.One specimen, showing visible gold, was examined optically with a binocular microscope and telluride material was twice removed from contact with the gold for x-ray diffraction. This material proved to be petzite and so amends a statement by Baker (1958, p. 39) that no petzite was found in the Phantom lodes.The second chip was polished, and microscopic...
