The commercial evaluation of coking coal from bore core data will begin with a technical evaluation of the coal properties affecting coke quality. Methods currently used for prediction of coke.properties from coal analysis are illustrated but in each case accuracy of measurement and prediction should be clearly understood. It is suggested that coal be initially valued from coking properties (base value) and adjusted for chemical properties (merit value). Final evaluation of coal can only take place as coke in the blast furnace where the coke is assessed under high temperature operating conditions. The commercial value of a particular coking coal will depend on many additional factors other than the technical properties.

World urban expansion puts constraints on the available land surface area of our major cities both for accommodating people as well as providing infrastructure and services whilst at the same time attempting to preserve the remaining natural environment. Whilst consideration is often given to underground planning for private and public transport infrastructure, the author is of the opinion that the current lack of underground planning of our cities that are suitable for underground development will have major long implications when finally the need for underground space planning is critical and ultimately recognised. This paper identifies the need for our city planners to integrate surface planning and underground planning as a ‘total planning solution’ where the city plan incorporates the elements of underground space planning as identified in this paper. Investigations by the author reveal that there are very few cities in the world that actually incorporate underground space planning in their city plans. The author uses the City of Brisbane as a case study for the potential introduction of underground space planning as part of the city plan. Despite efforts by the author to include the planning concept of underground commercial development in the latest Brisbane City Plan 2014 as well as four underground space workshops in Brisbane over the past 20 year through the Australasian Tunnelling Society (ATS), underground space planning for the City of Brisbane, apart from infrastructure projects, is not considered of significance to the City of Brisbane.CITATION:Robertson, A C, 2014. Comminution Kinetics equations are developed to take into account difference of grindability of mineral components. The equations describing both batch and closed circuit grinding or crushing processes are given. These equations are applied to industrial data to derive comminution kinetic and classification characteristics of the component minerals in a multi-mineral ore. Control strategy based on these concepts is presented.

Experimental data on the production of fines as a function of specific grinding energy consumption show that in general the energy utilisation in a choke fed high-pressure roll mill is higher than in a ball mill, but lower than in the single-particle mode of comminution under slow compressive loading. There is some evidence to suggest that the presence of water in feeds improves the energy efficiency of pressurised roll milling somewhat. Within a wide range of energy input, the size distributions of the ground product are self-similar, the logarithmic median size decreases linearly with the amount of fines produced and the inverse of the median size increases linearly with the energy spent. The production of fines as a function of energy expended follows essentially the same pattern as the one frequently encountered in media mills. The kinetics of grinding in the high-pressure roll mill can be simulated satisfactorily by modifying the standard particle population balance equation in order to account for energy dissipation in the tightly compressed bed. Common characteristics and important differences in grinding by the media mill and the high-pressure roll mill are highlighted.

Some fundamental aspects of recent single-particle fracture studies are reviewed. Findings from this research shed new light on the utilisation of energy during comminution operations and provide useful pointers to new research directions that could lead to significantly better comminution machines. Two methods for quantitatively predicting mineral liberation during comminution are reviewed. These methods have been developed into useful practical procedures, but they are almost unknown in the mineral processing community. Their use should promote the consideration of mineral liberation as an important variable to be considered during the design and operating control of comminution circuits.

Comminution of solids is surely one of the oldest technologies which even in this day and age of DNAs, chips and space exploration continues to challenge our scientific acumen and engineering ingenuity. In essence, this challenge is two-fold. One, as much as three to four per cent of all electric power generated world-wide is consumed in crushing and grinding primarily because the utilisation of energy is woefully poor. Studies have shown that the efficiency of mechanical size reduction processes is of the order of 1.5 to 12 per cent only (Schoenert 1986). Two, with the grinding technologies available to us, we have, at best, inadequate and, at worst, almost negligible control over the shape of the comminuted particles, size dispersion of the ground mass, and the sharpness of mineral liberation. Low energy efficiency and lack of control in the sense mentioned above have far-reaching implications for resource conservation, performance of down stream unit operations, and damage to the environment. Our problem is in fact central to the mineral-energy resources triangle shown in Figure 1 which depicts the close interrelationships among mineral resources which are becoming poorer in content and more complex in mineralogy each day, energy resources which are depleting rapidly without any viable alternate on the horizon, and environmental concerns which can no longer be ignored. It is evident that any improvement in the efficiency of the comminution process impacts directly on the control of environmental damage, conservation of energy and the economics of the operation. These concerns have special relevance for the processing of non-ferrous ores.

Commissioning time and cost can severely affect project economics, especially through unrealistic estimating, and requires a separate management team to ensure full control is. maintained. Targets to be achieved in commissioning are identified, together with the necessary policies to achieve them. Factors which have to be taken into account in applying these policies are Discussed.

The Curragh coal mining operation was designed and constructed to produce two coals initially at a rate of 4.3Mtpa. These are a high thermal energy steam coal primarily for domestic electricity generation and a low ash high quality coking product for the export market. Treatment of coals from four seams to achieve this requires a large and complex preparation plant and blending facilities incorporating state of the art technology. This facility was constructed during 1982/83. It has been designed for expansion to 6.8Mtpa capacity. The preparation and handling facilities were built at a cost of approximately A$80 million. Equipment includes 500 plus electric drives with a total capacity of 20 000kw. Commissioning was carried out in three phases : Staging - of the control system Coal Handling Facilities - conveyors, stackers and reclaimers for raw and product coals The Coal Preparation Plant - heavy media cyclones and froth flotation. A period of three months was devoted to the commissioning of the plant before requiring product coal to contract specification. This paper will describe the planning, implementation and results achieved.

In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. While more work is required to stretch the mill operating envelope coupled with other circuit additions to improve liberation of fine diamonds at minimum capital expenditure, the mill has, to date, performed to its billing.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, Ndlovu, G N and Sikwa, N A, 2013. In the past year, two very innovative gold ore processing plants have been designed, built and commissioned by Gekko Systems Pty Ltd. The first plant in Vietnam utilises conventional crushing and ball milling followed by gravity concentration (Inline Pressure Jig (IPJ) and Falcon concentrator), flotation, intensive leaching (GFIL), the first industrial scale use of AuRIX«100å ion exchange resin and a cyanide destruction circuit. The second plant, in Australia, uses a three-stage crushing circuit to crush the gold ore to minus 1 mm, followed by gravity concentration utilising a rougher, scavenger, cleaner circuit of IPJs and a Falcon concentrator. A direct smeltable gold concentrate is produced as well as a lower grade concentrate for future intensive leaching or sale. Both plants were designed and built within very tight time frames and budgetary constraints. The experience gained during the plantsÆ design, commissioning and operation are discussed.

The heavy medium cyclone plant for the preconcentration of silver-lead-zinc ore prior to grinding and flotation was commissioned in August 1982. This paper details the measures taken to get the plant up to design performance which involved modifications to the medium densifying and slimes clarifying sections. Operating experiences to date are described with emphasis on the low medium consumption recorded and severe wear on process equipment.

Porgera is located in the Central Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera Joint Venture treats a high grade epithennal gold deposit. Most of the gold occurs as submicroscopic particles in a sulphide matrix although there is some quite coarse free gold. Anticipated gold production is 900 000 oz per year for the first six years of operation.Stage I of the treatment plant consisted of a concentrator and leach/CIP Circuit. It was commissioned in August 1990. Design throughput was 1500 tpd with an anticipated gold recovery of 60 per cent. Throughput achieved was actually 1850 tpd with an average gold recovery of 69 per cent. CIP tails were accumulated in a pond awaiting retreatment by pressure oxidation.

Phu Bia Mining Ltd, a subsidiary of Pan Australian Resources Ltd owns and operates the Phu Kham copper concentrator located in the Xaysomboun District, Lao PeopleÆs Democratic Republic. Construction and commissioning of the 12 Mt/a copper concentrator and associated facilities was undertaken by Ausenco Ltd and handed over to Phu Bia Mining Ltd in April, 2008. The first copper concentrate was produced in April 2008 and the ship carrying the first shipment of copper concentrate set sail 27 July 2008. Nameplate mill throughput was reached in August, 2008 when 1 020 000 dmt of ore was treated in the milling and flotation circuit. The Cu-Au mineralisation is contained in skarn and stockwork mineralisation and is interpreted as a distal expression of a conventional porphyry copper-gold system. Copper mineralisation is principally in the form of chalcopyrite with lesser bornite. Gold occurs as small grains, typically associated with copper minerals. In the upper portions of the orebody, oxidation and water table movements have resulted in near surface leaching of the copper and below the leached zone, supergene enrichment resulted in chalcocite mineralisation. The circuit operates with a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) û ball mill circuit, feeding a bank of OK200 rougher cells. Rougher concentrate is reground in an IsaMill prior to entering a cleaner circuit consisting of three stages of cleaning and one stage of cleaner scavenging. The concentrate typically assaying 24 per cent Cu and 6 - 7 g/t Au is hauled for over 1000 km across the border to the Port of Sriracha in Thailand, and stocked in sheds at the wharf from which it is shipped to various Asian smelters. This paper discusses the successful commissioning and ramp up to design tonnage and metallurgical performance. In addition, a program to optimise both the comminution and flotation circuit is detailed with reference to grinding efficiency, flotation residence time and size by size mineral recovery.

Pasminco Century MineÆs slurry pipeline was commissioned in November 1999. It currently transports zinc and lead concentrate slurries in batch form to the Port facility, 304 km away in the Gulf of Carpentaria. The Pipeline and the Port have gone through several stages of continuous improvement to match the successful ramp-up of the concentrator. Improvements in the Pipeline and Port Operations have included: commissioning of the first slurry pipeline that delivers two products in the same pipeline in batch mode; management of batches throughout the pipeline and port system to minimise cross contamination of both concentrates; operation of the slurry pipeline to achieve high availability of the system; operation of the pump station interfaced with preventive maintenance to minimise unplanned shutdowns; continuous monitoring of pressures throughout the single-station, 304 km slurry pipeline; redesign of the Rotary screw feeder; redesign of the Dryer Control System; installation of a larger Induced Draft Fan; optimisation of the dryer internals to achieve a product of narrow size distribution and pellet integrity; redesign of the stockpile ventilation system; and the development of a surface sealant. This paper describes the early commissioning of both the Port and the Pipeline and the continuous learning and Quality Improvement Project initiated at the Port to focus on concentrate quality given the propensity of the fine concentrate to self-heat during storage.

The GPM Gold Project is located in Armenia, and consists of an open cut mine at Zod, near the Azerbaijan border, and a CIL processing plant at Ararat near the Turkish border. Mining at Zod commenced in 1976, and focused on near surface oxide ores, which overlay deeper refractory sulphides. Historical mining has now almost depleted the oxide ores, and the sulphide content of ore delivered to the processing plant at Ararat is increasing. Gold and silver recoveries through the Ararat plant were declining steadily.GeoProMining, the owners of the project, have expanded the Ararat facility to deal with the increasing sulphide content in the ore. In 2014, GeoProMining refurbished an existing concentrator on site to recover a sulphide concentrate from the ore, and have constructed an Albion ProcessTM plant to oxidize the refractory concentrate. Glencore Technology (GT) provided the Albion ProcessTM plant as a technology package.In July 2014, the progress of the GPM Gold Project Albion ProcessTM Plant was reported (Hourn, Voigt and Turner, 2014). At the time of writing, the construction of the plant was nearly complete. This paper presents an update of project progress, covering commissioning and ramp up of the GPM Gold Project.The commissioning phase occurred over June to August 2014, which included an M3,000 IsaMillTM fine grinding plant, a 6 tph limestone milling plant, a 60 tpd vacuum pressure swing adsorption oxygen plant, a 10 m residue thickener and a 12 tph Albion ProcessTM oxidative leach plant. Over the past 5 years, Bougainville Copper Limited has undertaken a number of major plant expansions to the copper concen- trate production plant at Bougainville in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. These projects have scheduled three additional ball mills, three new banks of Outokumpu flotation cells, four additional tertiary screens, two additional tertiary crushers, and more recently four high capacity 24.5m dia. tailing thickeners. The value of the five separate projects totalled more than A$100 million. A requirement of commissioning and bringing on line of each of these projects has been to minimise both operational losses and copper concentrate production. The commissioning has been successfully implemented by detailed planning of the commissioning work in conjunction with the plant operation. Planning has been detailed for each man involved on an hourly basis, highlighting the work required on each commissioning task that is to be undertaken and the time expected to achieve activity Completion.

The concept of precise, accurate timing with Electronic Delay Detonators (EDDs) was first seriously addressed in the mid-1980s and much was made of the cheapness and profusion of digital watches in terms of the likelihood of EDDs also being cheap and easy to produce. Ten years later, with every major explosives company and many electronics groups having instituted projects to capitalise on the promise of these devices, production devices are still to come into general use. In South Africa, Expert Explosives units have been used in most applications during proving trials and more recently for production blasting in underground ring stoping and open cast coal. The outcome has been valuable learning both as to the benefits and technical requirements for electronic delay blasting, and especially, safety aspects. Examples are shown of production blasts which utilised the power of EDDs. It is evident that it is not delay accuracy alone which determines the value of these systems, but the whole robustness, flexibility and ease of delay allocation when harnessing blast engineering knowledge. Muckpile movement and shape, fragmentation and vibration frequencies have shown to be greatly influenced by designs which can be implemented no other way. The flexibility of a system and the power of the software controlling it are crucial in capitalising on blasting potential, which lies in integrating control of blast timing with other developing electronic Technologies.

The Barrytown ilmenite pilot plant was commissioned in two stages using Westport Titanium Project heavy mineral concentrate. The wet concentrator was commissioned on the 17 December 1989 and produced magnetic concentrate from this date.   The Drymill was commissioned on the 27 January 1990 and produced product grade ilmenite successfully from the onset.   The commissioning period was exceptionally short by normal standards and few problems were encountered. This paper concludes with general observations of operations of the pilot plant.

In early-1995, the Bindura Nickel Corporation commissioned a pressure leach plant at its Smelter and Refinery complex located in Bindura, Zimbabwe. The novel pressure leach process was developed by Sherritt to treat the nickel-copper sulphide residue produced from the original atmospheric leach circuit. The process extracts essentially all the nickel from the nickel-copper sulphide residue under non-oxidising acid pressure leach conditions, thereby producing an upgraded copper sulphide residue suitable for smelting and refining to electrolytic copper. The commissioning of the pressure leach plant was relatively smooth and design conditions were achieved within six weeks of operation. This paper presents a brief description of the process development and the plant design, followed by highlights of the plant start-up activities and summary of the plant performance.
