United States federal and state regulatory authorities require underground mine operators to adopt adequate measures to minimize material damage to the surface caused by nine subsidence. This paper presents an approach to define and determine the extent of material damage due to subsidence from underground coal mining. The basic steps involved in the development of adequate criteria have been enumerated together with the approaches and methodologies used.

The possible closure and subsequent flooding of South Deep Gold Mine?s neighbouring Randfontein Estates Limited No. 4 Shaft (REL 4) necessitated the construction of five concrete plugs in the connecting tunnels to prevent the ingress of groundwater into REL4 from flooding South Deep mine. Several technical investigations had been carried out before and during construction of the plugs in order to reduce the probability of groundwater flow through the boundary pillar between the two mines or through the rock mass immediately around the plugs. This paper describes the geological, hydrogeological and stability investigations carried out to evaluate the structural competence of the boundary pillar.

This paper will discuss the issues associated with blasting in an urban mining environment that have been addressed by Winstone Aggregates at the Mt Wellington Quarry. These issues include - control of vibration and air overpressure, repeatability of shot performance, fragmentation on an extremely low maximum instantaneous charge, compliance with Territorial Authority regulations and perception. Over the last two years, in order to address these issues, Winstone Aggregates have undertaken a programme of continuous improvement, which has included; ò implementation of new technology; ò revising site procedures; ò conducting an investigation into the structural response of local buildings; ò investigating safe extrapolation; ò extensive public consultation; ò establishing credibility during the consent process; ò identification of perception issues; and ò building relationships and trust with neighbours. The issues addressed at the Mt Wellington Quarry have increasing significance for traditionally rural mining operations, as the input of the local community being urban or rural, increases. New and existing operations have the potential to adopt best practice now, building trust with the community and raising the profile of the industry.

Mine fires have occurred since the mining of coal was begun, and they are still occurring. The resulting economic waste may become considerable (219),3 especially if a fire is allowed to assume major proportions or to get beyond control temporarily. It is important, therefore, to act promptly whenever a fire is suspected and to have every action count. To do this effectively, it is necessary to know at the earliest possible moment and thereafter what is happening in a remote or inaccessible area. It is equally important to know before¬hand what may be expected as a result of any proposed combative measure. The logical method of combatting a fire demands the cooperation of both mining engineer and chemist. They should decide the course of action to be taken, drawing upon the mining engineer's intimate knowledge of the physical structure of the fire area, the cost and time required for proposed operations, and the probable efficiency with which they could be carried out, and upon the chemist's knowledge of the results to be expected therefrom.

"Gold and silver cyanide complexes are presently desorbed from activated carbon by means of hot caustic elutions. These solutions may or may not contain additional sodium cyanide. There are several parameters which affect the rate of stripping. Some of these include pH, ionic strength, and temperature. (1) Stripping is conducted in recirculating (ZADRA) or once through (AARL) circuits.This paper describes the development of a new chemical eluant which significantly increases the rate of stripping of both gold and silver cyanide complexes from activated carbon. Two case history applications are also described.INTRODUCTIONAdditional cyanide is used in strip circuits in order to prevent its depletion which could lead to precipitation of base metals or lead to a change in the nature of the gold cyanide complex to one which does not strip as easily. (2)The strip circuits that are able to function efficiently without the use of cyanide are mostly those where the carbon is acid-cleaned after stripping.Once the minimum cyanide requirement to maintain the complexes in their proper state are fullfilled, any futher incremental increase in the level of cyanide will have no bearing on the rate of stripping. (3)DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEW ELUANTGeneral DiscussionVarious carboxylated materials were investigated including octanoic acid, polycarboxylic acid (various molecular weights), salicylic acid, polymaleic acid, acetic acid. benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, 4, bi-phenyl carboxylic acid, phosphoric acid and stearic acid.The initial work was done on medium activiiy, non acid-cleaned carbon. The silver to gold ratio on the carbon varied greatly.Two different blanks were used. The first was an elution using a 2% caustic and 0.4% cyanide solution while the second was a 2% caustic elution."

This paper presents the results of s study involving characterization of ground subsidence of abandoned lead-zinc mines in northeastern Oklahoma. Two coordinated efforts were undertaken: (1) collection and analysis of available data such as driller's logs, geologic cross-sections, structure contour naps and stratigraphic sections, and (2) development of a numerical (finite element) technique for prediction of collapse and mine subsidence. An in-depth analysis of a major collapse in the region was conducted. The factors which contributed to this collapse were identified.

The flow-stress recovery of high-purity aluminurn following a 10 pct tensile prestrain was studied in terms of a fractional flow-stress recovery parameter fr. The flow-stress recovery behavior was related to the dislocation arrangements using transmissiort electron rnicvoscopy. During recovery at 120° and 160°C, nearly stable strength levels were attained, the strength level for 120°C recovery being greater than that for 160°C. This stabilization of flow stress was related to the formation of meta-stable dislocation networks bounding nearly perfect cells. Both network formation and the annealing of dislocation loops were found to be recovery mechanisms, and the stronger metastable strength level joy 120°C recovery was related to a smaller average cell size. Analysis of the networks was consistent with the reaction of sets of dislocations with a/2 (110) Burgers vector to give product Burgers DURING isothermal annealing of cold-worked metals, a degree of softening occurs without re-crystallization, and the processes responsible for this change are termed recovery processes. During recovery annealing, the dislocations generated during cold work become rearranged into low-energy configurations, and as much as 50 pct of the stored energy is released."' The relationship between this rearrangement of dislocations and mechanical behavior is of considerable importance, since the dislocation substructures formed during recovery provide a significant degree of low-temperature strength3j4 and can favorably alter the course of primary creep at high temperatures.4 The purpose of the present study was to relate the flow-stress recovery behavior of high-purity aluminum to the substructural modifications that occur. Electron transmission microscopy was therefore employed for direct observation of dislocation substructures at various stages of recovery following 10 pct prestrain. Several investigators5-' have proposed that dislocations can become rearranged or lost during the preparation of thin foils. It was found early in the present study that the dislocation structures in the thicker regions of the foils changed in a systematic way during the course of recovery. Therefore, it is unlikely that substantial losses or rearrangements occurred during thinning. This point will be discussed in more detail later. The results of various investigators indicate that recovery processes in fcc metals can result in release of 50 pct or more of the total energy stored in the as-prestrained metal, this percentage decreasing with increasing prestrain.' Alloying elements or impurities tend to increase this percentage. The release of stored energy of fcc metals during recovery appears to occur by 1) annealing of point defects if the deformation occurred at sufficiently low temperaturesg and 2) rearrangement of dislocations into low-energy Configurations.1,2In bcc metals, the annealing of dislocation loops has also been observed during recovery after prestrain,10-12 and it has been proposed that this is a recovery mechanism for unidirectionally strained fcc metals.' The density of dislocations in bcc metals has not been observed to decrease appreciably during recovery,10 although the formation of regular dislocation networks has been observed. has shown that the formation of such networks can result in elimination of long-range stresses and can lead to significant release of stored energy without dislocation annihilation. It might thus be expected that network formation is a significant recovery mechanism in fcc metals, although extensive network formation has apparently not been reported in controlled recovery experiments. The formation of sub-boundaries in aluminum has been observed by various investigators13'17 during recovery studies of aluminum, but the structure of these boundaries was not resolved. In this regard, it is significant to note that Bailey and Hirsch,' using transmission electron microscopy, detected no network or sub-boundary formation during recovery of 99.99 pct Ag. Furthermore, Clarebrough et al.2 found no such rearrangements during recovery of copper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The high-purity aluminum used in this investigation was obtained in the form of 0.125-in.-thick sheet. Spectrographic analysis revealed that the sheet was 99.995 pct A1 with the following weight-percent impurities: 0.001 Cu, 0.002 Fe, 0.001 Si, and 0.0004 Mg. The as-received sheet was in the heavily cold-rolled condition. The as-received sheet was cold-rolled at room temperature to 0.040-in.-thick sheet in the longitudinal direction, which was the original rolling

Cross-belt samplers are designed to sample particulate material in processing plants, usually when there is no space to install a conventional linear falling stream sampler. Most of the available cross-belt samplers are mounted on the top of conveyor belts, and remove each increment from a loaded moving conveyor with a 360° rotation of an open faced cutter, in a plane perpendicular to the material flow. Despite the practicality of this equipment and the fact that it occupies very little space in the plant, cross-belt samplers are well known for collecting biased samples, especially due to the increment extraction error. Sampling consultants around the world tend to condemn this sampling equipment, claiming that it is incapable of collecting the fine material from the bottom part of the load, and, since the sampling probability is not uniform for all fragments and depends on its position in the stream, this kind of sampler generates biased samples and its use should be avoided. Furthermore, the greater the segregation effect between particles, the larger the bias. However, some plants, whose initial design did not plan for the installation of a falling stream sampler, must rely on cross-belt samples for process control and reconciliation. For the past years, sampling equipment manufacturers have been putting effort in modifying the cross-belt sampler design in order to comply with the principles of correct sampling. Changes to the cutter material, shape, position, speed and movement in relation to the material flow have been made, and are continually being tested for different types of ore with various chemical and physical characteristics. This paper presents the improvements made to a cross-belt sampler at a gold plant feed in Brazil and describes the tests performed until it was possible to validate the new sampling equipment for reconciliation purposes.CITATION:Chieregati, A C, Amaral Jr, E A and Souza, J C O, 2017. For optimal design of rock socketed shafts used to support axial loading, it is important to predict the end bearing capacity. The existing empirical methods for determining the end bearing capacity of rock socketed shafts use the empirical relations between the end bearing capacity, qmax, and the unconfined compressive strength of intact rock, sc. Since rock socketed shafts are supported by the rock mass (both intact rock blocks and discontinuities separating them) not just the intact rock, one should consider not only the intact rock properties but also the influence of discontinuities when determining the end bearing capacity. Although the effect of discontinuities may have been implicitly (partially) included in the empirical relations derived from the results of load tests, it is not clear how big the effect is and how much of it has been included. In this paper, a database consisting of 50 test shafts, 25 of which contain the RQD (rock quality designation) value, is developed. Using the database, the applicability of the existing empirical relations is evaluated and two new empirical relations between the end bearing capacity, qmax, and the unconfined compressive strength of rock mass, scm, are derived. The new empirical relations explicitly consider the effect of discontinuities by using scm which is directly related to RQD. Finally, an example is presented to demonstrate the application of the newly derived relations.

Hong Kong’s Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme (SSDS) Stage I involves the provision of a system of deep tunnels for transporting to a central treatment works wastewater collected from a number of catchments around Victoria Harbour. For the SSDS Stage I works, about 24 km of tunnels have been excavated in hard rock at depths ranging from about 80 to 150 m below Victoria Harbour and the surrounding heavily developed areas of Kowloon and Hong Kong. Five tunnel boring machines(TBMs) with diameters ranging from 3.2 m to 4.3 m were used to excavate the tunnels. Tunnel excavation has been completed and tunnel linings are in progress. Major tunnelling issues such as ground stabilisation and water control encountered in the project are summarised. An overview of one of the possible future tunnel systems that might be adopted in subsequent stages of SSDS is also presented.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

"After many years of safety activity in the United States in one form or another it becomes increasingly evident to those in contact with safety work that to achieve continuous good results in accident prevention there must be an aggressive organization behind the safety movement at each mine with fairly definite plan and policy. A study of the methods used by various companies and the results they have attained will be of value to the common cause of safety promotion.A study has been made of the safety records of the Menominee iron range in the Lake Superior district, and of data from the county mine inspector's report. Several companies on this iron range that have attained a certain measure of success in their work of accident prevention have given data, and a summary of their safety methods is presented.The Menominee iron range of Michigan lies in the southern portion of the upper peninsula of Michigan, bordering on Wisconsin. It consists of two main. divisions--the West Menominee Range, situated in Iron County in the vicinity of Iron River and Crystal Palls, and the East Menominee range situated in Dickinson County in the neighborhood or iron Mountain, Mich. The mines about Iron River and Crystal Falls are peculiarly subject to fires in a carbonaceous, sulphur-bearing black slate which appears in the footwall. This gives considerable trouble because fires in this material start from spontaneous heating. The methods of mining are top slicing and open stoping, working on benches along the sides of the stopes. The character of the ground varies from medium Soft ore to relatively hard ore which permits open stoping. Approximately one-third of the operating mines are equipped with a fan for main mechanical ventilation. The remainder are ventilated by natural draft. The East Menominee range is the older, top slicing having been used there for a number of years, and the timber mats have boon well developed. In common with all districts, some companies pay more attention to safety than others, although, those which do riot have the best records do pay some attention to safety.During the past three years the annual production per man employed has remained about constant, but in many mines a general decrease is shown in the accident record. The variation in the results attained can be ascribed mainly to the earnestness with which accident-prevention work is pursued, essentially regardless of the method of mining used. This is shown to be generally true, because the record indicates a steady decrease in one mine with an active safety department, while in adjoining mines with the same kind of ground and method of mining but where not such intensive attention has been paid to safety work, the accident record is high."

Rock is a heterogeneous medium, a fact often ignored during blast design. In reality, the rock mass characteristics have a controlling influence on the outcome of a blast. If the optimum blasting results are to be achieved over a range of rock mass conditions, it is prudent to understand the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing overbreak around the periphery of an excavation. The field work was performed in a drift located in a geologically dominant rock mass and also included observations and assessment of blast damage at several operating mines. The blast damage was estimated on the basis of the half cast factor. The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation, orientation , frequency and aperture of joints, number and thickness of layers and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage has been described.

Approach Improved rear view mirrors, light-bending plastic lenses, and a closed circuit TV, are combined in a rugged system that allows the driver to see almost all areas around a large raining truck. How It Works Improved mirrors, used in place of ordinary left and right rear view mirrors, give wider angle viewing. Fresnel lenses, two mounted on the front edge of the hood and another one mounted above the right front fender, show objects close to the front and right side of the truck. A rugged closed circuit TV camera mounted above the rear axle reveals objects behind the truck. See diagrams showing reduction of blind area around a 150-ton mining truck. The improved mirrors for rear viewing are approximately rectangular. The left rear view mirror has a flat reflecting surface 10 inches wide by 20 inches high. The paper highlights the experimental investigations to characterize texture and plastic strain ratio r-Bar in auto grade steel sheets by ultrasonic measurements, whereas attempts were made to characterize interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties in prestressed concrete wires by eddy current measurements. Good correlations were obtained between the testing parameters (such as ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in case of steel sheets as well as eddy current out put voltage and phase angle in case of steel wires) and the materials properties (such as texture, plastic strain ratio r-Bar, interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties). 15 MHz normal direct contact and 20 MHz delay line normal shear wave probes were used for ultrasonic measurements. Eddy current measurements were done using an absolute coil probe with variable frequency selection. The experimental results show the possibility of nondestructive on line measurement of the above microstructures and properties.

The gas-combustion retort developed by the Federal Bureau of Mines at the Rifle Oil Shale Project near Rifle, Colo., is a continuous, gravity-feed retort. The heat required to convert the kerogen in the oil shale to liquid oil is generated by the combustion of product gas and carbonaceous residue remaining on the retorted shale after the kerogen has been converted to oil, gas, and residue. A study of the effects of the process variables on retort operation, product yields, and product properties is important to the successful solution of the problems encountered in the development of a satisfactory process. Statistical methods were used to design the experiments and analyze the effects of the rate of shale throughput, the composition of dilution gas, the height of the shale bed above the air entry, air-gas distributor design, shale size range, and the ratios of the flow rates of the various gas streams entering the retort to the rate of shale throughput.

Micropiles are routinely used in the United States for foundation support and underpinning applications. The high capacities achievable with the use of micropiles, combined with specialty rigs for easy installation in low headroom and difficult access areas makes them a good choice for situations often encountered on existing commercial projects. The bond zone of the pile is typically drilled into a competent stratum such as sands, gravels or bedrock. In this paper, the authors will discuss a project where the lack of a shallow ?competent stratum? led the geotechnical contractor to create their own bond zone for the micropiles using jet grouting. Due to problematic clay (CH) soils, the original foundation of a six story office building in west Houston had experienced up to five inches of differential movement in-between the shallow under-reamed shafts. The owner desired a permanent solution to the problem without disturbing the majority of the tenants. The structure was underpinned with a hybrid system of jet grouted micropiles as well as jet grouting alone and the structure was re-leveled using hydraulic equipment to within a 0.25? tolerance. Design, construction and sequencing of the project are discussed in the paper. QA/QC methods are also discussed, including coring for verification of jet grout column diameter as well as a full-scale micropile compressive load test. The structure was successfully re-leveled and the entire project was completed without disturbing any tenants on the floors two through six.
